CLUB NEWS

August Club of the Month Awards have been announced, the Premier Division accolade went to Alresford Town meanwhile the equivalent for Division One went to Hythe & Dibden – well done to both teams. The MJM Sports Kappa Respect awards for August Have Also been announced. In the Premier Division the award goes to Cowes Sports and in Division One Ringwood Town collected the award- well done to both. Coby Wilson has returned to Hamble Club and was available for their Buildbase FA Vase tie yesterday. Striker Nasim Meddah has moved from Shaftesbury to Ringwood Town Following the match against AFC Portchester last weekend Brockenhurst confirm that Brad Magookin has made 100 appearances for the Badgers. A figure of £60,000 is required by Portland United to secure ownership of the Blues’ arena at Grove Corner from the Crown, with a board erected inside the ground illustrating the funds raised so far. We are pleased to hear that around half the funds required have been reached to purchase the

Weyline Stadium, but the appeal continues, good luck to those involved at our western outpost. Hamworthy United home fixtures are now suspended until the Specsavers County Ground is signed off by Health & Safety with the Dorset County Football Association. There is an issue with one of the floodlights that could potentially put players at risk, if a floodlight is hit during the action. Steps are under way to remedy the situation, fixture changes will appear here, the League website or on Social Media. Tadley Calleva have added to their squad with the signatures of McAulie Stubbs and Alex Fragatta.

Some seventeen clubs responded to the request for a Sydenhams flag, and we understand that these will be dispatched soon, some may already have received them by the time you read this. Three further clubs enquired about pitch side boards and this will similarly be dealt with in the coming weeks. Twelve clubs are scheduled for Floodlight tests in September and October. Club Secretaries have been advised at those concerned- but worth mentioning to be prepared. We hear that the Wessex League podcast had 673 downloads in August, and there’s been over 60 so far in September. This Newsletter (in addition to being available on the website) should be available on the Voice FM website sometime soon as well.

MIDWEEK MATCH REPORTS

Mike Robins writes LYMINGTON TOWN 4-2 BOURNEMOUTH SPORTS EARLY stages suggested that this would be a relatively easy contest for the hosts, and as if to emphasise this the opening goal came inside the first five minutes when a delivery from Aziz Aldhayan found Sam HOUSE forced Manor’s keeper, Jack Robertson into making a good save. However the striker made up for that shortly afterwards curling a shot beyond the custodian to open the scoring. Manor’s skipper Brad Aspin had a shot 20 minutes in which was charged down by the hosts’ captain Tim Stephenson and almost straight away Tyrone CARKEET found himself with time to fire a ,ow drive through a crowded area beyond Henry Newman to level matters. Up until then it had been pretty much one way traffic, but perhaps Lymington took it easy and after the goal they were pretty much on the back foot. A mistake from the normally unflappable Adam Costello left Newman stranded and he gave away a penalty that was converted by CARKEET to give the Bournemouth Premier League side a 2-1 lead. The game swung from end to end and the turning point came a couple of minutes before the break when Tom MAN pounced to nudge the ball home when a cross was dropped by Robertson. HT 2-2 So, all to play for in the second period. Dom FALCO had a shot charged down three minutes after the restart, but then had both time and space to find the bottom corner to put the hosts 3-2 ahead with 53 minutes gone. Now it was the turn for Bournemouth Manor to hold on as Lymington threatened to take over the game and had three goals chalked off for offside before Rian DFRAKE added a fourth with around seven minutes remaining. The visitors had lost their discipline to a certain extent by then and had Ryan Ashford dismissed with a second caution, which perhaps could’ve been administered earlier after a futile delay of game by kicking the ball away, and then Sam Davis saw red seemingly for his appalling verbal outburst. Aside from this it was a keenly contested battle but Lymington perhaps not surprisingly progress to the Quarter Final of the Bournemouth Senior Cup. FT 4-2

John Gorman writes ROMSEY TOWN 0-2 HAMWORTHY UNITED This League Cup tie bought Hamworthy up the A31 therefore missing out on the severe traffic problems the other side of Southampton, problems which caused the Match Referee to arrive later than he would have wished, but to his credit the kick off was only five minutes late. The game then started very much on the front foot with the visitors opening the scoring after just three minutes in what was the first real attack of the game. The ball was worked down the left flank and a challenge bought a free kick some six yards from the goal line and a similar distance from the edge of the penalty area, an ideal position for a cross. But Ash POPE thought differently and drove the kick hard and low at the near post and though home keeper Charlie Philpott got his hands to the ball it finished inside the post and in the net. Romsey’s Keiran Hancock collected an early caution for a challenge and from the resulting free kick Philpott smothered Declan Randell’s header at the foot of the post. Hamworthy were probably enjoying more of the play but neither side were posing any severe threat on goal and when the Hammers’ Cameron Beard did force the ball past Philpott, Craig Bryant was well positioned on the line to clear. The Romsey keeper’s kit is only minimally different from that of his team-mates and his large white gloves are a boom as regards recognition in a crowded area, Randell, frequently in the opposing area, scuffed his shot after showing neat control before a Harry Cooper run was stopped by weight of numbers. Romsey bounced back with a shot from Liam Magee deflected to safety before the same player was stopped in full flight by a collision or a body check. The referee decided on the former and the half time whistle sent the sides to the dressing rooms with the visitors still one goal to the good. HT 0-1

Page 8: SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS #11 Ne… · Sunday, 15 September 2019 19/20 Edition #11 Page 3 of 18 SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS ARE YOU LISTENING? The Sydenhams Wessex Football

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS

The first half may have been short of goalmouth incident but the opening quarter of an hour after the break was an entirely different matter. Magee met a low cross from Geoff Dunn and saw the ball rebound to safety off the keeper’s legs with Bryant’s header from the resulting corner inches too high. Magee saw another effort cleared off the line before play switched to the other end and a fierce drive from James Clifton was saved at full stretch before Romsey enjoyed a touch of good fortune. They gave the ball away rather carelessly on the edge of their area only for Cooper to bury the ball in the keeper’s midriff when faced with a one on one situation. Philpott saved well from Pope before there was a repeat of the first half incident with this time Hamworthy’s player stopped by a collision or a body check. The Official can only give what he sees and he again opted for the collision but in both instances he could have been closer to the play. Substitutes arrived in force for both sides and inevitably the pace of the game slowed before Hamworthy scored a second goal as the game moved in to the final ten minutes. A prodigious throw in on the right cleared the entire penalty area, the ball was swiftly returned from the other flank and with the defence a little dis-orientated, COOPER headed in unmarked at the far post. Hamworthy did get the ball in the net again but the offside flag was long raised and with no further threat at either end the game came to a close. Hamworthy progress in the Competition but Romsey were in no way disgraced in an enjoyable game. On the night, it was an experienced Premier Division side against a side who could well be at that level next season, and the result perhaps reflected that. FT 0-2

MIDWEEK ROUNDUP

Just a handful of matches scheduled and one of those not played as Christchurch’s Hants Senior Cup tie with the Royal Navy was postponed as most of the Navy personnel had been deployed to the stricken Bahamas. So just four games on Tuesday with US Portsmouth moving to the top of Division One after defeating Follands five nil at Burnaby Road with five different names on the scoresheet. This was their fourth win in a row and they remain unbeaten in the League. Two matches in the League Cup where Hamworthy United won 2-0 at Romsey in a very enjoyable game and East Cowes Vics, whose Cup performances so far this season have far exceeded those in the League, defeated New Milton 3-0 with Jimmi Burton as usual among the goal scorers. Hamworthy will entertain Alresford in the next round while Vics travel to Brockenhurst. The last game was in the Bournemouth Senior Cup with Lymington beating Bournemouth Manor 4-2 with the visitors acquitting themselves well until they lost their discipline rather badly towards the end. Four different goal scorers for Lymington as well. One Premier Division game on Wednesday and Baffins Milton Rovers jumped from ninth to fourth in the table after beating Cowes Sports 3-1 though, as has happened before, their goal scorers were not reported at the time. The other game was in the Southampton Senior Cup. A Competition with a large entry from across the local footballing spectrum, the absence of any form of seeding does throw up the occasional mis-match and such was the case at Clayfields where Hythe and Dibden defeated BTC Southampton from the Southampton League by eleven goals to one. Mig Dark, Liam Goulding and Christos Papakonstantinou each scored twice with five other names joining them on the scoresheet, their reward being a trip to Sholing in the next round.

ROADWORKS IN THE NEW FOREST

A long stretch of the A31 through the New Forest is to close overnight for almost two months, between 9pm and 6am from 7 October- for around seven weeks. So please be warned- and if midweek games take you to or from the Bournemouth and or Poole area please do allow for extra journey time. The westbound carriageway of the A31 between the M27 junction 2 (for Salisbury and Fawley) and Picket Post and the eastbound carriageway of the A31 between the Ashley Heath roundabout and the M27 junction 1 (for Cadnam) plus slip roads at junctions in those sections will be closed. We hear that there will be a 50 mph speed limit westbound on the A31 between the entry slip road at M27 junction 1 and Picket Post, and eastbound between the entry slip road at Picket Post and the slip road at M27 junction 1.

As an aside it is understood that the above will not to coincide with closures of Blackwater Junction, and of particular import to those visiting Christchurch’s Hurn Bridge ground, which is closed between 8pm and 6am a number of weeknights to allow engineers to begin their preparations for the installation of new traffic lights and kerbs, as well as road widening and surfacing works.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH PART ONE

There was a friendly organised on Thursday at Cams Alders between Fareham Town and the Hampshire League Representative side as part of their build up to the FA Inter-League Cup. Kick off was 7:45pm and saw the Creeksiders go down 3-2. Luke Slade and Tom Froggatt with their goals, whilst Wayne Boud added a double (one from the penalty spot) and Matt Andrews a single for the HPL side- good luck to them going forwards, ironically both have played for Fareham in prior seasons.

WEEKEND MATCH REPORTS

John Gorman writes ALTON 1-2 WESTBURY UNITED ALTON bowed out of the FA Vase to a stoppage time goal in a game they could have, and perhaps should have won. Overall they enjoyed more of the possession and the visitors played for the best part of an hour with ten men, but the home side could not turn the possession in to goals. Despite Westbury’s normal kit being green, which would not in any way clashed with Alton’s colours, the Wiltshire side opted to wear a pale grey ensemble with white numbers which was far from helpful to an ever-struggling reporter, or indeed to anyone else. An early free kick for Alton led to a Scott Sanderson shot being blocked and home keeper Justin Courtnage clung on to a corner at the second attempt as play went from end to end without any real threat on either goal. Alton’s Ritchie Hunter was inches wide from distance before the visitors took the lead with some twenty minutes played. A free kick on the left touchline midway between the halfway line and the goal line was swung into the area by Ryan Bale and Dan KOVACS’s header appeared to go through Courtnage’s hands. Alton were forced into an early change with Hunter going off injured and the home side were perhaps fortunate when Courtnage sent an opponent flying without making any contact with the ball with no action from the referee. Alton were repeatedly swinging crosses into the Westbury area with no end result but their chances looked to have greatly improved on the half hour mark when Kovacs went from hero to villain with a challenge that was both dangerous and late and accepted the red card without any argument. The visitors sent a free kick in to the defensive wall before Alton finished the half stronger but without finding an equaliser. Sanderson had a shot saved and another cleared off the line, with the follow up blocked, before providing an inviting cross that Oli Graham headed over the bar – perhaps their best chance of the half. HT 0-1 The visitors were the quicker to make their mark on the re-start with Sam Jordan blocked in the act of shooting before they wasted a free kick twenty yards from goal, the shot clearing the bar by some fifteen feet. Alton were still enjoying a larger share of the possession, though Westbury looked threatening on the break, before the home side fashioned an equaliser almost out of nothing after twenty five minutes. A right wing attack broke down, the ball was rather scuffed inside and swept, left footed, high into the net from some twenty five yards by Jack FOWLER. The home side should have made it two almost immediately as Jamie Phillips found George Bowerman unmarked in the area but the shot was too high. The visiting defence was beginning to show occasional signs of panic and in quick succession Fowler was just wide and Jack Bicknell had a shot well saved and saw a header shave the outside of the post. Bur the visitors came back with time fast running out and with most of the home defence in the wrong half of the field Courtnage saved his side at the expense of a corner – which sadly was to prove their undoing. The kick was only partially cleared and substitute Joe FITZPATRICK’s shot from the edge of the area found the corner of the net past a possibly unsighted Courtnage. With the game already in stoppage time the remaining few seconds was not enough to make any difference and it was Westbury who had ensured it would be their name in Monday’s draw Overall Alton had the possession to win the game but lacked the finish in the area – the succession of high crosses were very much to the benefit of the taller defenders and credit is due to the visitors – it was easy to forget that they only had ten men for such a large part of the game. FT 1-2 Mike Robins writes DOWNTON 2-1 WINCANTON TOWN KEENLY contested between two evenly matched teams in the warm September sun which perhaps could’ve seen a more emphatic win for the Robins who failed to convert several second half chances that could so nearly have seen a different winner.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS

The opening stages were very even although the Wasps perhaps have the upper hand. Ernie Osei failed to hold a number of shots or crosses during the game, which must increase the heart rate for the Robins support and looked to be in trouble around the quarter hour mark when injuring his hand in palming away a shot, however he did recover. The visitors strung together a number of corners but failed to break down the home defence and shortly after it was Dan TELFER who swept home a cross from Sam Howe to make it 1-0. A further delay around the half hour mark saw the scorer withdrawn due to an ankle injury that lad to some debate over the substitute who was wearing a lightweight cast, and eventually a different player came on. The second goal came on 34 minutes a snapshot on the turn from Tom Moseley was parried and only partially cleared. The ball came out as far as Harry CRISP who lobbed the ball over the keeper and into the far corner of the net. A spell of pressure at each end failed to produce any more goals in the first half. HT 2-0 Mosely and Dan Savage both created openings but the ball wouldn’t fall nicely and neither could get a shot away, three minutes later the hosts found a way back into the contest when their player was brought down for a penalty which was converted by Dan WISE to make it 2-1. Abdul Razek was brought on for the injured Crisp and with a bit more luck would’ve notched at least two on his debut. One of the chances in a one on one with Sam Stroud would surely have seen a goal if he had released the ball rather than looking to score himself. With time running out Wincanton’s Toby Cole blazed the ball wide with the net gaping in front of him- a big let off for the Robins, who had another let off in the dying moments when the ball was scrambled away when an equaliser looked likely. Just about the right result on the day. FT 2-1

In Hampshire, none of the top three were in League action as the Senior Cup took precedence. In the Dorset Premier Hamworthy Recreation maintained their 100% start but only just, with a win by the odd goal in five at Corfe Castle. Third placed Balti Sports did similarly at home against Shaftesbury Reserves. Westlands ran out as 6-2 winners over Bridport Reserves to make up the results for the top three. Corsham Reserves stay top courtesy of a best of three win over struggling Ludgershall Sports whilst Shrewton bagged the points in a 5-2 home win over Purton. To complete the top three Wroughton won by the odd goal in five over Royal Wootton Bassett’s Development team. In the Southern League, Southern Division- AFC Totton won by the odd goal in five at Bristol Manor Farm, whilst Moneyfields fell by the same score line at Paulton. Sholing collected the points with a 3-1 home win over Cirencester Town whilst Evesham United scored two without reply at home against Winchester City. In the Premier Division, Wimborne Town won 4-0 at basement side Beaconsfield Town to go 15th in the table. Poole Town stay ahead of the pack by a single point after their 3-1 home win over Harrow Borough. Blackfield scored two without reply at Gang Warily against Farnborough.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS

WEEK SEVEN ROUND UP A very good day for the League and its Clubs in the

Buildbase FA Vase with ten sides advancing to the

next round and a midweek replay giving power to

add. There were five all Sydenhams ties and five

victories over Clubs from other Leagues and the

latter are always satisfying and they start this round

up.

Liam Magee scored twice in Romsey’s three one

win at Corsham while Newport recorded a similar

scoreline at Devizes with Joe Craig their two goal

man. Harvey Wright was another to find the net

twice, helping Christchurch to a 4-2 away win over

Dorchester Sports, while Dan Telfer and Harry

Crisp were on target as Downton continued their

fine start to the season with a 2-1 defeat of

Wincanton Town. Lastly a lone Connor Thorne

goal saw Tadley Calleva progress at the expense of

Royal Wootton Bassett Town.

In the “local” ties the largest attendance of the day,

167, saw Lymington pull off a comprehensive 4-1

win at Bashley with Mike Gosney scoring twice –

the two sides now meet again next weekend in the

League - while Cowes Sports were the highest

scorers of the day as they registered a 7-3 win over

Verwood helped by a hat trick from Mike McEnery

and two from Jimmy Wykes. Lee Vint scored two

of the visitors’ goals. A late Mike Turvey goal

added to two from Steve Ramsey gave AFC

Portchester a best of five goals win at Hythe &

Dibden while an own goal set Brockenhurst on the

way to a four goal success at Laverstock & Ford.

East Cowes Vics, who seem to find Cup fixtures

preferable to those in the League, pulled off a fine

3-2 victory over Premier division Fareham Town

and this represents further progress in the

Competition than they have made for many a

season.

The previously mentioned midweek replay will be

at Petersfield after the Rams returned from

Sherborne with a two all draw with the game still

undecided after extra time. Premier Division

leaders Alresford Town suffered a surprise 2-1 loss

at former Wessex League side Warminster Town

while Bradford Town scored the only goal of the

game against Hamble Club. A very late goal saw

Westbury United win at Alton despite playing an

hour with ten men but overall a good day for the

League with so many Clubs still on the Wembley

trail.

The Vase fixtures obviously led to a reduction in

the number of League fixtures with just four in the

Premier Division and five in Division One. Baffins

Milton Rovers moved in to second place in the

Premier table with a two goal win at bottom Club

Solent University and Horndean recorded their best

win to date with a 5-1 victory at Amesbury. Bobby

Scott notched a hat trick and the Wiltshire side have

now conceded seventeen goals in four home

matches. Bournemouth and AFC Stoneham met for

the first time in a League fixture with Eduardo

Jimenez’s goal giving the latter victory at Victoria

Park.

In the final game there was a welcome and hard

earned point for Shaftesbury against Hamworthy

United but overall, despite being involved in the

Vase on the day, Alresford still top the table.

There were no fewer than twenty six goals in the

five Division One fixtures with US Portsmouth

scoring five at Andover Town – five different

scorers – to remain at the top of the table and in a

topsy turvy day for the Andover Clubs, Andover

New Street, a mile up the road from the Portway,

defeated Follands 6-1 with six different names on

the scoresheet. Totton & Eling made it three wins

in a row with a 4-1 win at Ringwood, John

MacAulay scoring twice in what was the home

side’s fourth consecutive defeat, while the lowest

scoring game saw Fawley win 2-0 at Pewsey to

leave the home side still seeking their first win. In

the final game Whitchurch came down from the

heady heights of scoring five last week by

conceding five at home to Bemerton Heath whilst

scoring only two themselves.

There was one fixture in the League Cup to

complete the day’s programme with Fleet Town

having a long ride home after going down 5-0 at

Portland as the home side warmed up for their

Emirates FA Cup fixture with Salisbury next week

– Alex Godfrey leading the way with two goals.

But overall a good day and congratulations to all

the Clubs who will have their names in the hat for

Mondays draw for the next round of the Vase.

We hope to get the details of those ties involving

our 14 teams out on Social Media as soon as they

are known. Follow us on Twitter at @SydWessex
