This is your show and is a platform for your club to promote its events

and raise its profile. If your club produces post-match interviews please either email us a copy of the audio or give permission for us to play them on air straight from your website or social media sites, as we will aim to play them on the show. AFC STONEHAM- GROUND MOVE

AFC Stoneham will be moving to the new Stoneham Lane complex this season and the League has received the following communication from the club regarding entry to the complex: Hampshire FA confirm they have been appointed as operators of the £9 million Stoneham Lane Football Complex facility, due to open in Autumn 2019. They are part of the Parklife Project which is an FA initiative to ensure the income generated at the football clubs is put back into funding grassroots football within the local area, and in order to enter the facility, ALL users will need to register beforehand." By 'ALL users' they mean anyone who wishes to enter the ground, manager, coach, players, parent, spectator. Everyone who attends your away game at the facility will have to register first. By sharing this now, rather than dropping it in the form of a match day notification 7 days before a game, clubs are advised that it is quick and easy and can be completed at any time. http://www.hampshirefa.com/news/2019/jun/18/register-to-use-stoneham-lane-football-complex

PROGRAMME COMPETITION

Clubs are reminded that it is a league requirement, that they MUST produce a programme for each home First Team game in the FA Cup, FA Vase, County Senior Cup, League and League Cup- and with that in mind a timely reminder again that we are running the Programme competition again this season. To enter simply send one League or League Cup programme produced for a game in August to the Newsletter Editor at the following address please. Mike Robins 7 Wesley Road POOLE BH12 3BE Further copies will be requested as the season progresses around December/January and March/April.

LEAGUE NEWS

Once again, another reminder that clubs must advise attendances when they send in their result. The attention of clubs is also drawn to the fact that several amongst you continue to disregard requests for information from the League’s Social Media - @SydWessex - and then wonder why there is little coverage (of yourselves) in the press. Please be aware that this is monitored and action can and will be taken where necessary. On a happier note, figures suggest that the stats for people who have listened to the last two months of our show on Sundays are 641 in July and for the first two weeks of August- 388. Good sign of progress in that regard and we also hear that a number of clubs have been in touch to go into the Studio. Finally, we understand that a number of clubs ordered a new Sydenhams flag. Rest assured that the wait for these is not too long now. However should (your club) wish to get a new or replacement ground advertising board then make sure your application is with the League Secretary before Bank Holiday Monday.

Good

luck!

There appears to be a glitch within WGS, linked to the F.A. Cup played last Saturday, which has caused duplicate players to be created with new FAN numbers. This has been reported to The F.A. Thanks to those who advised us in picking this up. Replays for the Emirate FA Cup games that end level on the weekend of 24th August may be pushed back to the week afterwards and not played in the immediate midweek, so as not to take priority over already scheduled Bank Holiday Monday league fixtures.

CLUB NEWS

There’s been a new appointment at New Milton Town where Paul Nineham has been appointed as Assistant Manager. We heard of a couple of nasty injuries incurred last weekend, we extend our best wishes for speedy recoveries to Andover New Street goalkeeper George Baxter with a dislocated shoulder, at Brockenhurst where defender Tommy Barnes dislocated a knee and at Baffins Milton Rovers where Shane Cornish has a broken leg. Ringwood Town are still looking for a club Secretary, please do get in touch with Chairman Phil King- Email [email protected] for details.

There’s an event worth attending at Verwood Town on Sunday 25 August, namely the Paul Arnold Memorial Match. Kick off at Potterne Park is 13:00. See the poster above for all the details you need to know! Funds raised will be going equally between Papyrus UK – Charity for Prevention of young suicide and the club. A host of ex-players and friends of the club will be participating. Do get along and support the event if you’re able. Following the article on Darren Powell on his time with our League, we understand that he is now assisting another former Newport IOW player Tom McInnes in the running of Island League side Binstead and County Old Boys. We wish him well on his career there. There’s a new arrival at Moon Park where Bemerton Heath Harlequins have added Graham Williams on dual registration forms with Winchester City. The game at Baffins on Saturday against Brockenhurst was postponed as contractors apparently cut through power lines on Friday and were unable to make repairs in time- as the replacement cable could only be sourced at Reading. Following the departure of Shaun Dallimore to Alresford – Brett Denham has been appointed club captain at Tadley Calleva

MIDWEEK MATCH REPORTS

Gary Day writes NEW MILTON TOWN 0-1 UNITED SERVICES PORTSMOUTH A single Preliminary Round game is necessary to even up the numbers in the Hampshire Senior Cup and it was Wessex Division 1 teams New Milton Town and United Services Portsmouth who were pulled out of the hat to contest it. Most of the first half play was within the New Milton half of the pitch but overall the Services side created a few opportunities but finished only once and it was that 13th minute goal that proved the deciding factor. Ripiner and White both had efforts off the mark before the goal which saw Seiden get to the goal line on the right of the box and his chipped ball into the middle got past the keeper and it appeared that STONE applied the finish and, although Ripiner attempted to make certain, the consensus was the ball was already in (official confirmation is awaited!). Ripiner headed over for the visitors and Hazell’s cross from the left was headed off the bar from a central position by Seiden. The Linnets were battling hard and rarely featured as an attacking unit in the half although, from a throw on the right, the ball was knocked to Petty who dragged his effort across goal and wide. HT 0-1 Seiden had a chance early in the second half but home keeper Dennison pushed the ball up and his teammate Lines completed the clearance. New Milton thought they’d equalised on 67 minutes when Whiteside drove a pass forward, Duffy applied the ‘finish’ but he’d strayed offside. Milton were awarded a free-kick in the 77th minute about 25-yards from goal. Petty took it and it was nicely played, height to get it over the wall, dip and placement but USP keeper Hunt, who hadn’t been called upon to make a meaningful save up to that point, got across to dive and prevent it from going into the bottom corner. United Services countered as, a minute later, a low Quirke shot was held by Dennison. An unfortunate incident occurred on 81 minutes when Duffy made a most unfriendly comment to the referee. Unfortunately, the New Milton captain had no alternative but to follow his own advice and leave the field having been shown a straight red card. A rousing finish happened with the ten-man home side making a concerted effort to take it to penalties, but Hunt produced a further impressive save after Drodge swept past two Services players and struck firmly from 20-yards. FT 0-1 Overall, the result was a justifiable one. So, a premature end of the county cup road for New Milton, whilst this win enables United Services Portsmouth to join in with all the other entrants!

Mike Robins writes LAVERSTOCK & FORD 4-1 PEWSEY VALE

The hosts got off to a quick start, kicking sown the slope at The Dell and an early chance fell to Adam BOURNER, but his low drive from a Russell Jones through ball was parried. However the Bulldogs captain had a chance to remedy the situation on seven minutes converting a penalty for the opener. Sam Tuttle in the Vale goal almost kept it out mind. The first opportunity for the visitors came around the quarter

hour when a free kick from skipper Craig Lewis went through for a goal kick- just ahead of any approaching attackers. Seb Dawes can count himself unlucky not to have opened his account shortly after when his well-timed header was well claimed by Tuttle and Tommy Campbell-Smith perhaps should’ve done better on a one on one with the aforementioned keeper. The hosts’ second goal came on 26 minutes. All the hard work came on the flank from Jones, and in the ensuing goalmouth melee DAWES was able to squeeze it home from around six yards. It was soon three, when again DAWES found the target- with a glancing header from a cross from the right side. HT 3-0 The second half resumed much in the same way as the first finished, with the hosts enjoying most of the play. JONES then found himself on the score sheet, initially crowded out on a run, Tuttle unfortunately dropped the ball and it was 4-0 with the best part of 40 minutes left to play. It could’ve got worse for Pewsey but a penalty on 72 was saved by Tuttle this time to deny Bourner his second. From thereon in, it was the visitors who searched for a goal- and that duly arrived with the arrival of the final quarter of an hour, when Eden BUNCE fired home. Into the final ten minutes Laverstock’s Roberts sprung high to keep out a great effort that rounded off proceedings. FT 4-1 John Gorman writes ANDOVER NEW STREET 3-2 BEMERTON HEATH HARLEQUINS The two sides shared six goals in the first encounter on Saturday in a game apparently as enjoyable as the score suggests and this was very much more of the same though with a definite and, on the night, deserved outcome. The home Club had problems before the start with goalkeeper George Baxter injured and no available deputy meaning that midfielder Callum Sweeney donned the yellow jersey for the evening. The game got off to an explosive start with New Street scoring as early as the third minute with a quality goal. Mark Keogh won the ball in midfield, Jazz Beavis found Ilyas WARSHOW in the area, the defence unaccountably backed off and the striker fired high into the roof of the net. Street continued to hold the upper hand, though a dangerous free kick from Jake Rawkins caused some problems in their area and scored again on the twenty minute mark. A corner from the left curled in by Jason Silver was headed powerfully against the bar by Matt SCOTT, again the defence appeared static and the big defender lashed the loose ball into the net.

Most of Bemerton’s threat came from Rawkins on the left flank and Sweeney was forced to go down at his feet before play switched to the other end with keeper Dan Kempson beating away another effort from Warshow. The visitors were making their way into the game and reduced the deficit on the half hour mark when a fiercely struck free kick from Rawkins came back off a combination of Sweeney’s hands and the crossbar and Justin BENNETT forced the ball over the line in the ensuing scramble. New Street should have

made it three when Beavis sent Silver clear and Warshow struck the keeper’s legs from the cross before Bemerton came close at the other end as Bennett outjumped Sweeney and saw his header cleared off the line by Keogh. Five minutes from the break Bemerton’s Aaron Blaxall collected the first caution of the evening for a rather cynical trip on Luke Hooper some five yards from the “D” and then suffered further punishment as Ollie YATES’s free kick went through or round the defensive wall and under the diving Kempson. Sweeney and Kempson then both dealt competently with dangerous crosses before the break came with the home side in front. HT 3-1 Perhaps reminded of their position at half time the visitors started the second half strongly with Sweeney saving from Bennett at the foot of the post before Kempson saved a Shane Lock effort at the other end in a similar manner. Beavis was cautioned after one challenge too many with Sweeney forced to fist away the

resulting free kick before the home side suffered a blow as the half reached its midway point when Scott, a tower of strength in defence, was forced to hobble off after a collision. Bemerton rather wasted a chance when the experienced Eddie Perrett hit Sweeney’s legs in a one on one situation and New Street were now at times forced on to the defensive. Sweeney excelled himself in dealing with crosses in a crowded area while Lock’s selfless running and control often provided the home side with an outlet. With time running out Bemerton got rather upset when the game was stopped for an injury with two cautions for dissent – sadly the Sin Bin ruling does not apply in the FA Cup otherwise it could have been interesting – but to their credit they kept coming forward with BENNETT scoring in another goalmouth scramble deep in to stoppage time. But it was too little too late and New Street had booked a trip to Thatcham in the next Round. FT 3-2 A very enjoyable game on a nice evening on a perfect playing surface and it is perhaps wrong to single out one player but Sweeney was superb as makeshift goalkeeper. His willingness to come out and punch crosses put many of his more experienced counterparts, who remain rooted to their line at all times, to shame. And a word of praise for the referee, who had a fine evening though many are probably still wondering as to where he found such an inordinate amount of stoppage time. But it happens in every game! Roger Allen writes HYTHE & DIBEN 3-2 AFC PORTCHESTER This was a thoroughly deserved victory for the Division One side which would have been more convincing but for some suicidal defending in the final couple of minutes. Hythe started the better and very early on Sammy Woodward had the first of several battles with Brad Snelling in Portchester’s goal when one on one with the keeper. On this occasion the keeper won blocking the shot at the expense of a corner. At the other end Michael Turvey half volleyed over the cross bar. Despite having most of the play the home side conceded the first goal on 13 minutes after Turvey was fouled five yards outside the penalty area. Ellis MARTIN took the free kick with his left foot – the top corner beckoned. Martin turned creator for the next chance but James Thomson’s header was saved by Josh Cotton in the home goal. Then on 21 minutes Hythe equalised as Liam Goulding advanced into the penalty area only to be brought down by Josh Warren. The penalty was coolly taken by Filippos TERZIDIS low to the keeper’s right. Moments later it was Terzidis again with a free kick that went through the wall to be parried by Snelling but Terzidis missed the rebound. After an exciting beginning the game settled. Although both teams had chances it took until the stroke of half time for the deadlock to be broken. Sam Floyd failed to get a clean header to a Terzidis corner but the ball fell to Cain PRENTICE who prodded the ball home. HT 2-1 After half time Hythe continued to dominate and Woodward was again thwarted by Snelling when through one on one. The next chance fell to Portchester as Owen Fee was inches wide. However WOODWARD was not to be denied a third time by Snelling as he ran onto a through ball and slotted it past the keeper. Julian Stahler came on as substitute for Prentice at the start of the 2nd half and he had a series of chances. The first one he shot over then he was denied by Snelling’s legs as he ran clear then he crashed the ball against the underside of the bar but the ball stayed out. Portchester were struggling to stay in the game but they did pull a goal back in the final moments. Anybody that has seen Hythe will know that they like playing it out from their own penalty area in order to draw sides out so they can hit them on the counter. However occasionally they get caught out by this dangerous game and Portchester’s substitute Efu KAZADI was not hanging around as he gained possession and rifled the ball into the net. FT 3-2 But it was too little too late for the Premier side and Hythe now go on to entertain Horndean in the next round on the 24th.

Wayne Dickson writes ALTON 2-1 PETERSFIELD TOWN With a flea in their ear from Saturday Alton started on the front foot and took the game to Petersfield, Perkins shot wide and then the keeper collected his cross, before Sanderson had a shot that was deflected for corner. Alton were nearly caught out as they allowed Essai to move forward from midfield and his shot cannoned back off the post. Petersfield's Judd shot wide, before Bowerman had a cross cleared. Alton forced Gardiner in the Petersfield goal to save, following Matt Graham's free kick, Hooker got on the end of it but Gardiner saved. Hooker was soon in action at the defensive end as he cleared a cross, this was picked up by TREMLETT who let fly from twenty five yards and it flew past Courtnage into the top corner to give Petersfield the lead. Bowerman had a shot saved, before on the stroke of half time Graham's free kick went just wide. HT 0-1 The second half started with Fowler running at the Petersfield defence, his pass found Dos Santos, whose cross was blocked for a corner. After Alton changed their shirts due to the sky blue of Petersfield making distinguishing players difficult, it was Alton who took advantage as the ball fell to Scott SANDERSON thirty yards out and he gave Gardiner no chance for the equaliser. Alton now had their tails up, although Courtnage had to save from a header. Following good work by Oli Graham and Bowerman, Perkins had a shot saved. Petersfield were trying to stop the onslaught, they conceded free kick after free kick, first Moore's free kick was headed back into the danger zone by Oli Graham but Sanderson headed wide, then Perkins free kick just evaded Bowerman in front of goal. Alton scored the winning goal when Sanderson picked up the ball found Bowerman with an exquisite pass, who laid off to HITCH who took a couple of touches before his shot from the edge of the area nestled in the bottom corner of Gardiners goal. Although Petersfield tried to get back into the game, it was Alton who were in the ascendancy, a Matt Graham corner found Oli Graham, but his header was cleared off the line. Hitch almost scored again but his header from Perkins cross looped over Gardiner but bounced off the bar. Petersfield's Neal shot over the bar, before Tremlett saw red for a foul on Phillips which earnt him a second yellow. FT 2-1

MIDWEEK ROUNDUP

Not as many games as last week but enough perhaps to make this worthwhile with three FA Cup replays leading the way on Tuesday. Andover New Street, who by all accounts were unlucky not to win the first game, made no mistake second time round with a three two win over Bemerton Heath, made all the more praiseworthy by Street fielding midfielder Callum Sweeney in goal for the entire ninety minutes. The home side were three one up at half time with Bemerton’s second goal and the second for Justin Bennett coming deep into second half stoppage time. There was a similar scoreline at Hythe & Dibden with the home side continuing their impressive start to the season by defeating Premier Division AFC Portchester. The potent trio of Filippos Terzidis, Cain Prentice and Sam Woodward scored the home goals and, as at New Street, the opposition’s second goal came in stoppage time. Street now travel to Thatcham Town whilst Hythe will entertain Horndean. On Saturday Fleet had to come from behind to salvage a draw with Farnham Town and in the replay at the latter’s Memorial Ground they again conceded the first goal before scoring twice to take the tie. One other Cup fixture, in the Preliminary Round of the Hampshire Senior Cup, saw US Portsmouth score the only goal of the game at New Milton and earn themselves a First Round tie at Fareham, a slightly shorter journey. Four games in Division One but only three completed as a power failure caused the Romsey Whitchurch encounter to be abandoned at half time with the game scoreless. Alton beat Petersfield in the North East Hampshire derby by the odd goal in three in front of an attendance approaching two hundred and there were one hundred and fifty at Laverstock where the home side defeated Pewsey Vale four one with two goals from Seb Dawes – the visitors still adjusting to Sydenhams League football. In the final game Totton & Eling’s poor start to the season continued with a 4-0 loss at home to Verwood with Lee Vint opening his account for the visitors with two goals. The last of the four FA Cup replays on Wednesday with Baffins Milton Rovers defeating Alresford by the odd goal in three and earning themselves a trip to fellow Sydenhams League side Fleet Town in the next round.

HAMPSHIRE SENIOR CUP

Following one Preliminary Round tie last week the First Round Proper of the Hampshire Senior Cup provides the midweek football for this coming week. With Sydenhams League sides dominating the entries numerically there are bound to be a number of ties in which Clubs face familiar opposition – unlike the FA Competitions it is unavoidable - and for the purposes of this exercise the seventeen ties have been split in to four sections. ALL PREMIER TIES Just two with Baffins Milton Rovers and Alresford who met in an FA Cup replay last week involved again though facing different opponents rather than each other. Baffins

entertain Tadley who make the long journey from the north of the County and who recently held Sholing for 75 minutes in the FA Cup. Alresford meanwhile are on the road with a trip to the Forest to meet Lymington and may face another difficult evening.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS

ALL DIVISION ONE TIES Again just two ties which involve the two Andover based Clubs though they have not been drawn to meet each other. Andover New Street travel to Totton & Eling, who have, as this is written, yet to gain a point in the league whilst their visitors have enjoyed two tussles with Bemerton, the second successful. Andover Town are on the other side of Southampton as they visit Follands who have made some shrewd close season signings and have started the season well. PREMIER DIVISION v DIVISION ONE. Some fifty per cent of the ties – nine to be precise – fall into this category starting with AFC Portchester against Alton. The home side have probably not started the season as they would have wished but Alton always seem stronger on their own soil so home advantage could prevail. Two sides who have started the season well, Ringwood Town and AFC Stoneham, meet at the MACRA Community Stadium, Long Lane where the latter’s brief experience at the top level should see them through. In the north of the County Whitchurch make a rare visit to Fleet Town and will fancy their chance of an upset whilst further south there is something of a derby at Cams Alders where Fareham entertain US Portsmouth with the odds slightly in favour of the home side. US Portsmouth, incidentally, defeated New Milton in the Preliminary Round tie referred to above. Romsey Town have had an up and down season to date and may find Bashley a difficult proposition at the Bypass while Bournemouth cross to meet Newport at their temporary Whippingham base. The Island side has made a slow start to their League campaign and the visitors’ strength up front may be the key. Brockenhurst, unbeaten in their first two League matches, should be too strong for Petersfield at the Meadens Skoda Arena, Grigg Lane, while Fawley AFC, hard to beat on the Waterside, may quietly fancy their chances against Cowes Sports. The other Cowes side, East Cowes Vics are also on the mainland and face a tough task at Hamble Club. OUTSIDE OPPOSITION Always enjoyable to meet “different” opposition, something that cup ties should be all about, and four of our sides have that pleasure in this round. Fleet Spurs, former members of the Sydenhams League, now ply their trade in the Combined Counties Division One and have won both their opening matches and will welcome Solent University who, conversely have not won a game to date. Christchurch will enjoy meeting the Royal Navy side at Hurn Bridge, a good footballing side who will not be easy to overcome, while the remaining two ties involve further Combined Counties opposition. In what should be the “home banker” of the Round Hythe & Dibden entertain Eversley & California, from near Yateley who have lost both their opening fixtures. Similarly, Horndean should be too strong when they travel to Farnborough to meet Cove who were relegated to the Hampshire Premier League at the end of last season and then re-instated when a vacancy occurred in the Combined Counties League.

It is asking a lot for one of our teams to win the Trophy, though Alresford did a few years ago [2013], but the next Round sees the involvement of the “big boys” from the higher Leagues and a chance for “giant killing” and the opportunity to play at bigger Stadiums. Good luck to all, and here are the carrots that are on offer for our teams…

WEEKEND MATCH REPORTS Roger Allen writes BOURNEMOUTH 1-0 AMESBURY TOWN This was a game of relatively few chances and contrasting styles. Whilst Bournemouth played a short passing style Amesbury were more direct and carried the greater threat in the first half when they had the benefit of a breeze blowing down the pitch. However they continually over-hit balls which fell into the grateful hands of the Poppies keeper, Shane Cooper. Jordan Matthews carried the greatest threat for Amesbury and he had the game’s first chance but Cooper produced a good save at the expense of a corner. Amesbury continued to have the bulk of possession and territorial dominance and, when Luke Greenway was brought down on the edge of the penalty area, the resulting free kick by Jordon Matthews was straight at the keeper. It took Poppies until the half hour mark to fashion their first chance when Louis Coulson shot wide. Then

against the run of play on 37 minutes, Poppies took the lead courtesy of Karol ROG [pictured left, photo courtesy of the club], who curled a shot into the far corner from the edge of the penalty area to give them a half time lead. HT 1-0 Amesbury again started the better in the second period but, as the half wore on, Poppies came more into the game. The first real chance of the half fell to Rafael Santos who forced keeper Jordan Tewkesbury into a fingertip save. The chance was provided by Rog who was now having a big impact in Bournemouth’s play. Poppies continued to have the bulk of the chances and Edgar Zanin was denied by a good block from Tewkesbury.

Shortly after Amesbury had a good shout for a penalty when Jordon Matthews appeared to be brought down just inside the penalty area but their claims were denied by the referee. Poppies were able to see out the game comfortably and came closest to scoring but Zanin was denied FT 1-0 Mike Robins writes RINGWOOD TOWN 3-5 NEWPORT IOW Despite the hosts taking an early lead, a crazy couple of minutes in the last ten minutes of the first half probably decided the destination of the three points in an exciting encounter at Long Lane this afternoon. Ringwood almost scored inside the first 30 seconds when a mistake by Ryan Hughes allowed Ben Harris free space and time to create an opening but the chance came to nothing whilst a similar mistake at the Allotments End almost allowed Newport’s Jake Wright to open the scoring. However it was the hosts who got the ball rolling on eight minutes with a pinpoint cross from Harris being headed home by Ryan HAMM. Chances at both ends suggested that things were far from over with Lewis Wright unlucky not to draw the game level on 14 and Ringwood’s Jack Barton had an effort hacked to safety off the goal line moments later. It was perhaps not a surprise when Neo LAMB grabbed an equaliser, although the strike was rather special from out wide the defender’s first time strike flew into the net giving Nick Harvey no chance at all. Veteran Newport keeper Gary Streeter was called into action a number of times making some decent saves to keep out the hosts, who also had a couple of chances narrowly wide of the mark. Against the run of play the visitors went 2-1 up when Streeter quickly released a ball upfield and from around 20 yards Connor KELLY struck the target. Within 60 seconds it was three. The ball came to Liam TRIGGS who fired low back towards the Ringwood goal. He was not far from the edge of the centre circle, and bizarrely the ball found the net, when perhaps someone should at least have got in the way or cleared it! HT 1-3

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS

Five minutes after the restart, Jack Darnton tested Streeter from distance, and almost immediately the Island side countered. TRIGGS found himself unmarked six yards out at the back post with the ball being threaded through a crowd of players, and moments later, had he had a few seconds more, would

have grabbed a second but could only scuff a shot wide when well placed. The hosts made a couple of changes once the fourth had gone in and the tide began to turn. A Hamm strike from the edge of the penalty area saw Streeter equal to the challenge, but the big keeper was powerless to keep out a HARRIS free kick that curled over and round a defensive wall from a free kick 22 yards out to make it 2-4. Pulses quickened amongst the home support when Ringwood pulled another goal back whilst the visitors were down to ten men- after Mark Taylor, who was not content with just a caution for a silly foul and wanting to argue the point was directed to the “sin bin”. Substitute Flynn WEARDEN had a bit of luck when his strike went in off the upright. Ringwood’s Croucher also came close to getting on a congested scoresheet, but with time running out it was another mistake in the home midfield that allowed KELLY to grab his second with just three minutes left with Harvey left exposed. Both sides had further chances to get a goal, but to no avail. An exciting contest for the neutral. FT 3-5 Carl Horton writes FAREHAM TOWN 4-2 FLEET TOWN Coming off the back of two good wins and unbeaten so far this season, Fareham knew that their good start would be sternly tested with the visit of Fleet Town. A strong wind blowing diagonally across the pitch towards the Mill Road area was also bound to be a factor. The game saw an even start with Fareham just shading the possession with some nice passing moves and Fleet using the wind to hit long balls over the top to their lively left wing Taylor Watts. He was certainly keeping Ash Tattersall busy but he was dealing well with everything that was thrown his way. A crisp passing move saw the first chance of the game falling to Tom Settle who placed his shot just over the bar. But on 15 minutes, from nowhere to be honest, the Fleet striker Enow OJONG nicked the ball off the Fareham defence, miskicked his shot but the ball fell back at his feet and he made no mistake with the second effort placing it inside Ross Casey's post. 1-0 to Fleet Town. Fleet were now starting to find their feet with Fareham giving away the ball too easily. The effective Fleet midfielder Jack Howard constantly hitting that left wing ball over the top. But Fareham were still producing good moves and one of these resulted in Tom Froggatt being fouled on the edge of the box, the resultant freekick just over the bar from Tom Settle. Two minutes later Simon Woods got clear, his squared ball managed to miss all the incoming Fareham players. The game was in danger of becoming congested in an area 20 yards either side of the half-way line with both teams pushing up their defences. Fleet Town’s Brad Wilson then took a clear dive inside the box, the referee waving away his appeal but the player managed to talk his way off the pitch and into the sin-bin. With the man advantage, Fareham pushed forward, Simon Woods receiving the ball in the area, he turned sharply to shoot but was tripped in the process, Penalty to Fareham - up stepped Curt ROBBINS, no mistake in the bottom left hand corner on 42 minutes.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS

There was still time for Tattersall to drive through the middle of the Fleet defence only for the keeper to smother the ball at his feet just as he was about to shoot. Then Woods played Stockford through whose shot went just wide in dying seconds of the half. HT 1-1 With the swirling wind now in Fareham's favour the Creeksiders made early progress with another Settle free-kick just clearing the bar. On 49 minutes a proverbial goalmouth scramble saw the Fareham team queuing up to shoot, firstly a Will Harris shot was blocked, the rebound falling to Woods, his shot was saved, the rebound finally falling to Lewis STOCKFORD [pictured below, photo by Paul Proctor] who comfortably swept the ball home to put Fareham 2-1 up It was Fareham's turn to hit the ball over the top to the left wing with Simon Woods proving a handful to the Fleet defence and Fleet now getting the ball down and passing well but a breakdown in midfield on 79 minutes saw Woods pick up the ball, drive through the centre of the entire Fleet Town defence and with his heels being clipped the referee played the advantage and WOODS hit a stunner inside the far post, Great goal - that was one to savour - Fareham 3-1 up. Just one minute later a gorgeous Scott Hamilton cross was planted on the head on the unmarked Curt

Robbins his header was straight at the keeper. Fleet were still making their own chances with a deep cross clearing the entire Fareham defence to find an unmarked Fleet player, his free header going wide. Another classy Fareham passing move saw Robbins playing Hamilton through, his squared ball finding the newly arrived Connor Messingbird in acres of space deep in the box, his delayed shot just blocked on the line. Immediately down the other end and the wind worked in Fleet's favour this time as a long ball held up in air deceiving the Fareham defence only for Brad WILSON to nip in and lob Ross Casey - Fareham 3-2 Fleet

Fleet now with a glimmer of hope started piling forward, so the inevitable was bound to happen, but no - on 82 Messingbird picked up a loose ball in midfield, played through WOODS who cut inside the Fleet defender and planted the ball in the bottom left hand corner, making it 4-2 Fareham The Fleet defence had started to lose their cool by now and after Scott Hamilton had nicked the ball off the toes of the Fleet number 5, the big defender reacted leaving the referee with no choice but to show him a second yellow and Fleet were now down to ten men. Still time for Tattersall to go on one of his runs, cutting into the box on 91 minutes only for his shot to go straight at the grateful keeper. After an agonising six minutes of added time the Referee brought the game to a close. A special mention to the Officials today, really effective, showing good common sense and controlling the game well. FT 4-2

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

The Southern League saw a mixed bag of results for our former clubs. Starting with current Wessex League title holders, Sholing went down on the road at Mangotsfield United 3-0 in front of a gate of 128, with Dan Demkiv netting a pair. Moneyfields lost 1-0 in a delayed match at Bideford whilst Winchester City shared the points and six goals at Bristol Manor Farm- Simba Mlambo with two for the Citizens. In the Premier Division, just 64 were at Gang Warily for the visit of the Met Police. Blackfield & Langley went down by the odd goal in seven, despite taking an 11th minute lead through Hisham Kasimu. Contrasting that there were 632 at Salisbury, where the hosts beat Dorchester Town 4-1, Toby Holmes and George Colson each bagging a brace. Wimborne earned a point in a 1-1 draw at Hendon whilst Poole Town won 3-0 over Yate Town at Tatnam.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS

WEEK THREE ROUND UP

A full League Programme scheduled but two matches not played for different reasons. Friday’s incessant rain put paid to the evening fixture between Follands and Alton (it also washed out the cricket at the Rose Bowl but that is a different story), whilst Saturday’s Premier Division meeting between Baffins and Brockenhurst was postponed because of power problems caused by Contractors at the PMC Stadium. Three Clubs started the day in the Premier Division with one hundred per cent records and two are still intact. Hamworthy United remain at the top of the table on goal difference after an impressive 4-1 win at Hamble Club, Lee Francis scoring twice, and Alresford won by the same margin at home to AFC Portchester with four different names on the score sheet. AFC Stoneham however suffered their first reverse of the season with a Matt Neale goal, the only one of the game, giving Christchurch their first victory. A Karol Rog goal secured Bournemouth the three points against Amesbury and Bashley, accustomed to having the largest attendance of the day, achieved it again but as visitors this time when sharing two goals and the points at Cowes in front of 135 spectators. Fareham made it seven points out of nine in winning their first meeting with Fleet Town for many years, 4-2 at Cams Alders, with Simon Woods claiming two, while Lymington Town also scored four at Shaftesbury with Micky Finch and Mike Gosney among the goals. The home side scored once in reply but have yet to get their season started. Portland and Horndean, two sides who will hope to be there or thereabouts at the season’s end, shared two goals at the Grove with Jamie Symes following up last week’s FA Cup hat trick with another goal for the home side. The final match in the Division and again no joy for Solent University who are still seeking their first win of the season after going down 4-2 to Tadley at Test Park, skipper Brett Denham scoring twice for the north Hampshire side. In Division One there are no fewer than six clubs with seven points at the top of the table with Andover New Street leading the way after a 4-2 win at Petersfield with four different players contributing the goals. Love Lane has never been a happy place for “Street” – they conceded double figures there a few seasons ago - so the win will be doubly pleasing. Hythe & Dibden dropped their first points of the campaign in drawing one each at home to Laverstock & Ford – regular scorers Sam Woodward and Seb Dawes on the mark – and Downton beat the presently stuttering Romsey 2-1 at Wick Lane with Robbie Owen getting a double. Verwood shared the points in a one all draw at Whitchurch during the course of which we understand their goalkeeper, Sam Thompson, suffered an injury and we wish him a speedy recovery. The remaining two Clubs now on seven points, Ringwood and Newport, met at Long Lane with Newport coming out on top by five goals to three in the highest scoring game of the day - Connor Kelly netting two for the visitors. East Cowes Vics claimed their first point of the season coming from behind to draw after Justin Bennett had given visitors Bemerton the lead and it finished all square and goalless between Pewsey Vale and New Milton, the latter’s third draw in four matches and Pewsey’s first point of the campaign. Fawley claimed their first win of the season with a best of five goals victory over Andover Town at the Portway with two goals for Kieran Roche and lastly four goals for US Portsmouth against Totton & Eling – Tom Jeffes two- leaving the Millers still without a point after four games and having conceded thirteen goals, but it is early days. One attendance missing, but all scorers eventually notified although it was quite late in the day. Attention in the coming days is focussed on cup action. First up are the First Round ties in the Hampshire Senior Cup, full details above and then on Saturday the “Road To Wembley” continues for a number of our teams. Good luck to all those involved in both competitions. The final mention this week goes to Ireland and the Premier Division south of the Border. Bohemians were leading bottom of the table UCS 10-0 when the visitors scored in second half stoppage time and promptly tweeted “goal on 91 minutes – probably too late for a comeback”. The acceptable spirit of Football.
