YOUR MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

At the end of last season, the League were disappointed at the small number of Programmes submitted in respect of the Programme Awards and the League Chairman referred to the subject at the recent AGM. All Clubs have to produce a matchday Programme and human nature being what it is, some are better than others. Overall it is probably fair to suggest that the standard of the programme is down to the Programme Editor. Some Clubs have people who love doing the job and the results are there for all to see. To other Clubs it seems a chore with the inevitable outcome. So, what constitutes a good Programme? Perhaps three things: - But before looking at these it should be decided as to how many pages will constitute the Programme, the number of advertisements and the pages on which they will be shown. This will give you a Template each week and you simply fill in the gaps. Back to the “three things”. A striking cover, readable and informative content and a fair balance between said content and advertising. The COVER is the “face” of the Programme and also in a sense the “face” of the Club. It should therefore be striking, stressing the Club’s identity and including the date of the game to which the Programme relates, the Competition in which the game is being played and the name of the opposition. Leaving aside content for a moment and a look at ADVERTISING. This can be a source of income and there are statutory Adverts that have to be included but they should never occupy the bulk of the Programme. I came across one Programme last season – NOT a Sydenhams League one – that contained 40 pages and was sold for £3.00 31 pages were adverts – and I am afraid that is a rip off. Another Programme, this one in the Sydenhams League, that was described by one respected spectator as “a Brochure extolling the Club Chairman’s Company”. So, there has to be a happy balance with content outweighing advertising. CONTENT – the most important part. There HAS to be something to read but before that the basics. Team and Match Officials lay out should ideally limit the players to sixteen per side. Nothing is worse than seeing a blank page saying “no information received from the opposition”. This happens – report it to the League and simply look on Full Time and use the sixteen shown for the previous game. To repeat a list of EVERY signed player is lazy and insulting to the spectators. There should be a page – or article at the most – extending a welcome to the opposition, officials and spectators alike. There are club histories on the League website so there is NO excuse for saying nothing has been provided. There should be an up to date League Table – always accessible from Full Time or the League Newsletter. I get regular phone calls from an acquaintance who does not own a computer but supports his local Sydenhams side week by week, asking where they stand in the Table. Such information has long since disappeared from local papers and the Club in question, for reasons unexplained, never put a Table in their Programme. Other points of interest – recent results, forthcoming fixtures, Match Reports – these are invaluable – player profiles, League Round up (pinch it from the Newsletter). Copy ideas from other Programmes - plagiarism is the best method of improving a Programme! One or two Clubs have programme Sponsors – admittedly easier said than done - and there are Clubs that cover the costs and more of the Programme week by week – because of the excellence of same. There are spectators for whom a Programme is part of the Matchday. They may be pests, and sometimes unreasonable in pursuit of same, but they pay their admission, buy a Programme and spend money at the tea bar and in the Clubhouse – the sort of people you want to come back. A good Programme can work wonders in that direction and enhance the standing of the Club. This has been put together with the help of two of the best and most experienced Programme Editors and we hope it will be of help. The League will also still try and assist with Articles through the course of the season.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS

PROMOTION AND RELEGATION Changes to note that will apply at the end of the coming season. Step 4 and Step 5 (our Premier Division sits at Step 5) The Clubs finishing in last place in each of the seven divisions at Step 4 at the end of the Regular Season will take part in Step 4/5 Play Off matches against a Step 5 Club. A total of 24 Clubs will be automatically promoted to Step 4. These Clubs will be:

League Position Combined Counties League Champion Club Eastern Counties League Champion Club Essex Senior League Champion Club Hellenic League Champion Club Midland League Champion Club North West Counties League Champion Club, 2nd and 3rd placed Clubs Northern League Champion Club, 2nd and 3rd placed Clubs Northern Counties East Champion Club, 2nd and 3rd placed Clubs Southern Counties East Champion Club Spartan South Midlands Champion Club Southern Combination Champion Club United Counties League Champion Club Wessex League Champion Club Western League Champion Club

In addition to the above, the remaining second placed Clubs will be ranked on points per game (then goal difference, then goals scored if required) with the four highest placed Clubs also receiving automatic promotion. The remaining seven second placed Clubs will take part in the Step 4/5 Play Off matches on a single match basis at the ground of the Step 4 Club they are drawn against. Where possible, the draw for the Play Off matches will be regionalised. The winners of these Step 4/5 Play Off matches will be allocated to Step 4. The Clubs to be promoted from Step 5 will be allocated to the most geographically appropriate division at Step 4. A Club promoted to Step 4 shall comply with the Licencing System provision as set out in Appendix 1 to the Standardised Rules. Step 5 and Step 6 The Clubs in the bottom place in each of the fourteen divisions at Step 5 at the end of the Regular Season will be ranked on a points per match basis (then goal difference, then goals scored if required) - the twelve lowest will be relegated and placed in the most geographically appropriate division of Step 6. These Clubs will be replaced by the Clubs in first and second position of the two divisions operated by the South West Peninsula League and the Clubs placed in first, second, third and fourth positions in the remaining eighteen Leagues at Step 6 at the end of the Regular Season. Step 6 and 7 At the end of the Regular Playing Season the Clubs in the bottom two positions of each of the twenty Step 6 divisions will be liable to relegation. All Step 7 Clubs seeking promotion to Step 6 must make application using the prescribed form direct to The Association, copied to their existing League, by 31st December in the relevant year. In order to be considered for promotion Clubs must finish in 1st position in their Step 7 league. If the Club finishing in 1st position does not wish to be promoted or fails to meet the entry criteria then the club finishing in 2nd position will be eligible for promotion. If the club in 2nd position does not seek promotion or fails to meet the entry criteria then clubs down to 5th position may be considered for promotion provided that they meet the appropriate entry criteria. Clubs finishing below 5th position may not be considered for promotion and, for this season only, more than one club may be considered from each League. Each application must be accompanied by the agreed application fee, as determined by the Committee, which is non-refundable.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS

With the FA Cup and FA Vase draws imminent, this week we’ll look at a few statistics for our clubs down the years, predominantly in the latter as success in the FA Cup is somewhat stale, with no real progress made beyond the 2nd Qualifying Round, having said that the last member club to proceed further was Brockenhurst. In 2015/16 they went out at Grigg Lane in the 3rd Qualifying Round by five goals to one against visitors Wealdstone. The above graph shows the number of games played by our current member clubs in the FA Vase, since the commencement of the Wessex League and whilst that club has also been a member of our League. Overall, Brockenhurst lead the charts with 105 Vase games. Of the current membership, we have no winners unfortunately- hopefully that’ll change this season. The most recent success is only at the Quarter Final stage when Bournemouth went out at home against West Auckland Town. But there have been two Semi-Final appearances; you have to go back to 1987/88 for Bashley’s appearance, in a two-legged affair against Emley, and New Milton Town in their former incarnation of Lymington & New Milton in 1998/99 when they played Taunton Town. This grid shows our current member clubs’ best season as far as I am aware, apologies if I’ve missed any- I’m sure you’ll let me know if I have.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

A look at the changes in the League constitutions at Steps Five and Six around the area for the coming season as the FA continue their re-structuring with the main ambition that all Leagues should contain twenty Clubs – and in fairness they seem to have made good progress this time round. Our look embraces the Western, Hellenic and Combined Counties Leagues – our near neighbours so to speak – and it is fair to say that the Sydenhams League at both levels has undergone little change compared with the others. In simple terms the two up/two down relegation and promotion between the Premier Division and Division One has been carried out as per FA Instructions and we have “lost” one Club and gained two meaning that we now have two Divisions of twenty Clubs – to the delight of the Fixtures Secretary. We have “lost” Sholing to promotion, and we wish them well in their new surroundings, while both Fleet Town and Pewsey Vale have returned to the League from the Southern and Hellenic Leagues respectively. Fleet will compete in the Premier Division and Pewsey in Division One and we extend a warm welcome to both and, as with Sholing, wish them well. Moving left in basic terms and the Western League, regular opposition in both FA Vase and Cup each season. They initially retained twenty Clubs in each of their two Divisions but with many more changes than our own League as they have lost and gained five Clubs. Those to have departed are Willand Rovers, Chipping Sodbury Town, Shortwood United, Chard Town and Chippenham Park. Willand were promoted to the Southern League as Champions and both Chipping Sodbury and Shortwood were initially moved to the Hellenic League, the former though were successful in their appeal and this season will continue to contest in the Premier Division- which will run with 21 teams Chippenham Park, in everything but name Chippenham Reserves, have been pulled out by their parent Club and Chard Town have been relegated for Ground Grading reasons despite pleas from many Clubs in the League that they be allowed to remain. They will play in the Somerset County League next season. Coming in to fill the gaps in the Premier Division are Tavistock and Exmouth Town from the South West Peninsula League, Street who have oddly opted out of the Southern League after just one season with staffing issues the main concern and in Division One Almondsbury from the Hellenic League and Lebeq United make the step up from Step seven and the Gloucestershire County League. The Hellenic League has also seen considerable changes in its make-up especially in the two Step Six Divisions (East and West) and continues to have quite a large footprint. The Premier Division has increased from eighteen in number to 19 with two Clubs, Burnham (members of the Southern League not too long ago) and Easington Sports being promoted from the two lower Divisions, and Westfields coming from the Midlands League, who are based in Hereford which is going to mean a long journey for the Berkshire based Clubs. The two Clubs exiting the Division are Wantage Town, returning to have a second attempt at the Southern League, and Abingdon United who have been relegated. Their two Step Six Divisions have only 16 in the West and 18 in the East. Pewsey Vale, because of their geographical location, are always going to have to travel, but had they remained in the Hellenic League they would have this coming season faced two trips to Hereford, one to Malvern and one to Wellington in Somerset. Also in that Division for the coming season are Shortwood United who are sadly on something of a slippery slope. They resigned from the Southern League and dropped in to the Hellenic where they finished bottom of the Premier Division and were relegated to Division One. If they cannot cope with that, they could well be back in local County Football this time next year. Lastly the Combined Counties League which mainly covers Surrey and the fringes of Hampshire and Berkshire. They have seen considerable changes with an overall gain of two Clubs and something of a foul up. They have lost two Clubs from the Premier Division – Chertsey to promotion and Horley who have moved to the Sussex League or Southern Combination to give it it’s correct title – and AC London from Division One. The latter were removed from the Competition in the very early days of the season for breaches of the majority of the Rules. In their place come Egham Town and Molesey, both relegated from Step Four, and Ascot United who have moved from the Hellenic League. All three will play in the Premier Division. Coming into Division One are Westside and Jersey Bulls. The former have been promoted from Surrey Intermediate football and will ground share at Croydon Athletic – the CCL has a fair number of ground shares – and Jersey are following

Guernsey in securing a team in competition on the Mainland. They are claiming that when they play their first home fixture it will be the southernmost game ever played in the National League system. Good luck to them though the other Clubs in the Division will probably be far from happy. Back to the foul-up mentioned earlier. The original Constitution showed Frimley Green remaining in Division One despite finishing in a promotion place and Cove relegated to the Hampshire Premier League. Frimley Green appealed and to the surprise of nobody won the appeal and were promoted with Cove being re-instated. This means the Premier Division will have to operate with 21 Clubs – to the undoubted joy of the Fixtures Secretary. They move in mysterious ways etc. So, given the above, we came out rather well. I have not covered our friends in Sussex as our paths rarely cross. Having said that, Chichester City won the Premier Division title last season and have taken up a slot in the Southern League. At the bottom Arundel and Shoreham took the hit and suffered relegation. They’ll be replaced by Alfold and (once Wessex members) Steyning Town.

CLUB NEWS

Jake Carswell has joined Bournemouth after spending last term with New Milton Town where he scored seven goals from 28 starts in midfield for the Linnets, whilst another new face at Victoria Park is Jack Voisey, a striker, who was with Dorset Premier Parley Sports last season. On the credit side at Fawcetts Field, the Linnets have picked up the signatures of Jon Grace, Joe Petty, Cameron Solly and Ryan Butterworth amongst others. Other players noted as moving on from Bournemouth include Aziz Aldhayan and Harvey Elsom who have moved along the A337 to Lymington Town -linking up once more with former Poppies’ players Mickey Finch, Steve Flynn and Ron Frost, who have already signed again for the Southampton Road side. At Hurn Bridge goalkeeper Max Frampton has re-signed for Christchurch along with Grant Cormack and, after a couple of years away, Jon Blake. Behind the scenes at Barlows Park, Simon Hood has joined Tadley Calleva to look after (amongst other things) sales and marketing. He joins the club after previously being with Basingstoke Town where he was Sales and Marketing Director, where he generated significant income. He has also worked with League clubs Accrington Stanley and AFC Wimbledon so has a wealth of business knowledge to bring to our member club. Another new arrival here sees the appointment of Harrison Gilkes to the Coaching team, bringing with him his experience of time with Basingstoke Town and Slough Town to name but two. Players to commit for another season at Hamworthy United include Dan Cann, Jamie Gleeson and Connor Cocklin. At Longmeadow Ryan Long has re-signed for Whitchurch United. But there’s new faces elsewhere- on the Waterside where Lewis Connor has joined Fawley after spending some time with Totton & Eling last season, and at Bemerton Heath Harlequins there’s another new arrival, Martin Burkhill whilst striker Matt Low has joined Petersfield Town he’s formerly a professional footballer who had to give up following an injury.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS

I DON’T DO FRIENDLIES………. BUT

Over the last three to four seasons the number of pre-season friendlies watched has declined to almost nil and that was the intention again this season. Such matches are important to Clubs, Managers and players but, as a rule, are not really aimed at spectators. Too many substitutions, a general lack of information, too hot (on occasions) and clashes with cricket – but there are, or can be, exceptions to every rule. So, with Hampshire playing cricket everywhere but in Hampshire at present a chance of a break presented itself with the Jersey FA playing host to Exeter City on a Friday evening in late June. Jersey are following in Guernsey’s footsteps this season with a team in the Combined Counties League and this was the first of a handful of friendlies arranged in preparation for the coming campaign. The game was scheduled for 6.30 on the Friday evening at Springfield Stadium, the main ground on the island, so an early afternoon flight from Southampton which was delayed for some forty minutes by gremlins in the system that maintains the Departures information (I decided not to offer any technical assistance!). There in good time though, bright sunshine, and arrival at the ground around 6.00. Delighted to find a Programme on offer and a seat in the stand which, unusually, is preferable to the touchline. The playing surface is artificial and, as with many such pitches, is surrounded by a “cage” which does slightly restrict the viewing if you are less than six feet tall. There were a fair number of Exeter supporters present – it is as easy to get to Jersey from Exeter as it is from Southampton – and their flags adorned the fencing behind one goal. One was the property of the Exeter University supporters but in an “up-market” touch they called themselves the “University Grecians Appreciation Society” rather than the more mundane University Supporters Club! With Jersey playing in all Red the visitors changed their normal red and white kit to black with orange trim which did not really go with the green and white hooped socks or one player’s pink and white boots. Jersey will be playing at Step Six next season so there was a large gap in the standards of the respective teams so the visitors were always going to win and duly opened the scoring after 20 minutes – a through ball and a neat lob over the advancing goalkeeper – and there were two more before the break. The second rather defied geometry with a low cross shot hitting the inside of the base of the post and bouncing up on to the underside of the bar before falling behind the line whilst the third, to those watching from the Stand, looked suspiciously offside. The second half started with the only blot on the performance of the Match Officials – the Referee had travelled over from Sussex whilst the two Assistants were local – and one of the latter took no action when a visiting player was bought down immediately in front of him and probably two to three yards outside the side of the penalty area. The referee immediately blew for a foul and moved over to organise the free kick but before it was taken had his attention drawn to the aforementioned Assistant who had now raised his flag. It appeared he had declared his own version of VAR by now decreeing that it was a penalty. The Referee dismissed this out of hand – would that some of the referees in The Women’s World Cup had taken similar action – and the game continued. Exeter scored a fourth, the best of the game, with a superb free kick round the wall and added a fifth before, in a sense, declaring. Jersey never gave up and battled to the end, even collecting a yellow card for their troubles, and despite the numerous second half substitutions it was an enjoyable game, helped by the fact that all the substitutions and team changes were clearly announced on the Tannoy. With Exeter being in the Football League there was no fear of any Sin Bins – that delight at least postponed for the time being – and the game attracted an attendance of nearly four hundred who basked in the sunshine and a temperature at kick off of twenty-seven degrees. An overnight stay, St Helier in the sunshine on Saturday morning and home mid-afternoon. Highly enjoyable! Is this the final game of last season or the first of next season? – and it conjured thoughts of a trip to see Jersey Bulls in League action on home territory at some stage in the near future. And so, now to our own- please contact us so we can promote your games and advise of clubs from elsewhere looking for similar. Don’t forget the home team also has to obtain sanction from their County FA before playing. Pre-season fixtures and tournaments are listed in good faith, but please note the League have no control over the proposed schedules. Please check with the clubs nearer the time if making a special journey.
