MASS: An all-school Mass will be held Friday, September 27, at 8:50

AM in the multipurpose building to celebrate the Feast Day of St. Michael

the Archangel. Students must wear their dress uniform. Parents and

grandparents are welcome. All visitors are asked to check in at the front

office.

LETTERS TO SHUT-INS: The freshmen will be earning “A” hours by writing letters to shut-ins in the St. Michael community and in the greater Baton Rouge area. If you know an elderly friend or relative who would appreciate receiving a monthly letter from a St. Michael student, please email Robin Haile at rhaile@smhsbr.org with his or her infor-mation.

MARCH FOR LIFE 2020: Last year we filled nine charter buses with students who joined our pilgrimage to the March for Life in Wash-ington, D.C. The students returned with a deeper sense of faith and a stronger commitment to building a culture of life here at St. Michael and in the greater Baton Rouge community. The total cost of the trip is $500 for this six day trip to Washington, D.C., departing the morning of Mon-day, January 20, and returning on the evening of Saturday, January 25. Students may reserve their space on the trip by turning in a non-refundable $100 deposit and a completed form to the Campus Ministry office by Friday, October 4. You may also reserve your space with a

specific request for financial aid if the registration fee is a significant barrier. Space is limited so don’t delay! We need March for Life Parents who are willing to come on the trip and work as a team to coordinate logis-tics, luggage, and meals for the trip. THE PRO VITA DINNER: Announcing the 11th Annual Pro Vita

Dinner and Silent Auction benefiting hundreds of young people and seminar-

ians from around our diocese who will be traveling to Washington, D.C. this

January for the March for Life. This year’s Pro Vita Dinner will take place

on Thursday, October 17, at 6:30 PM in the SMHS gym. Come ready to be

inspired by our guest speakers. Hear the impact of the March for Life Pil-

grimage, and raise money to send Religious Sisters, Seminarians, Priests,

and Youth to the D.C. March for Life in January. If you would like to pur-

PEER MINISTRY RETREAT: Students are invited to attend an over-night fellowship and enrichment retreat beginning Saturday, September 21, at 3:30 PM and ending Sunday at 2:00 PM. Students will lock-in at school to plan, pray, and have a ton of fun – learning how to bring Christ across cam-pus and beyond. A vigil mass for retreatants will take place in the school chapel. The next morning, students will travel by bus to hike Tunica Hills. The due date to sign up is Friday, September 6. WARRIORS FOR LIFE WEEK: Warriors for Life Week will be

September 16—20. During Warriors for Life Week we focus on spreading

awareness about a different life or human dignity issue every day. In the

past, we have covered abortion, assisted suicide, racism, bullying, poverty,

human trafficking, and more. We will have a pro-life speaker and a candlelit

rosary for life with the entire student body, lunchtime activities every day in

the cafeteria, and sign-ups for upcoming pro-life events such as the Born to

Run 5K, which raises money for our local pregnancy crisis center.

LIVING ROSARY: We invite you to pray for a greater respect for hu-

man life on Wednesday, September 18, in the SMHS gym. Students will lead

prayer and meditation, followed by a pro-life speaker. All are welcome to

pray for and celebrate life. The Living Rosary will begin at 8:40 AM.

PARENT FAITH OPPORTUNITIES

PARENT TALK – PARENTING IN THE DIGITAL AGE: Thursday, September 19, parents of 6th-12th graders are invited to hear Jason

Angelette speak on this important and challenging topic. Children today are being brought up in a much different digital environment than the one

in which we were raised. There are many great blessings that are coming out of these advancements in technology. However, parents and grand-

parents need to be aware of new challenges and even dangers for our children. You are invited to hear a presentation where you will learn more

about the various difficulties that our youth, teens and young adults are facing through this new digital age, what we can do to better protect them,

as well as steps that you can show them to become smarter users of this new technology. The talk will take place from 6:45-8:00 PM in the multi-

purpose building. RSVP appreciated.

SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION: Students will have the

opportunity to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation during religion

classes on Monday & Tuesday, September 23 & 24. We appreciate our

priests who make it possible for our students to experience the grace of this

Sacrament.

INTELLECTUAL

END OF FIRST NINE WEEKS: The end of the first 9 weeks grad-ing period is on Wednesday, October 9. It is important that each stu-dent puts forth maximum effort in his or her studies. There is no excuse for not working. Be sure to keep up with your student’s grades using Plus-Portals. If you need help accessing the site, please call the front office and ask for the registrar. If you have questions or concerns about your student or his/her grades, please contact the appropriate teacher.

ACT PREP CLASS: An ACT Prep Class will be offered in September and October in preparation for the October ACT. Information about the class is being sent to all parents and students via email. Please see flyer at end of this newsletter.

BATON ROUGE NATIONAL COLLEGE FAIR: The NACAC National College Fair will be held at the Raising Cane’s River Center on Wednesday, October 2, 6:00-8:00 PM. This free event allows students and parents to meet with admissions representatives from across the nation in order to learn more about the merits and opportunities each college/university has to offer. In addition, workshops will be offered to address college entrance testing, the college application process, and TOPS/ Finan-cial Aid. COLLEGES VISITING SMHS: Throughout the fall, admissions representatives from a number of colleges and universities will be visiting our school in order to share information with prospective students. Emails and/or announcements will be made alerting students of these opportuni-ties. Seniors may want to monitor their email, Moodle, and the SMHS Online Calendar for dates/times of upcoming events held at St. Michael.

COLLEGE VISITATION DAY: On Wednesday, October 16, seniors will not have school so that they may visit a college or university of their choice. Although each college and university establishes its own rules in regards to arranging an official visit, students may begin by contacting the Office of Admissions or Office of Enrollment Services for assistance in planning their campus tour. Check college or university websites for con-tact information and news on upcoming events. We encourage each senior to take a campus tour to gain valuable information to support his/her col-lege decisions!

PERMISSION FOR COLLEGE VISITS: When a student is plan-ning a college visit or tour day, his/her parent(s)/guardian(s) must forward a written request to Mr. Sanchez, Dean of Students, prior to the actual date of the visit. The student should return to school the day following his/her absence with a letter of verification of attendance which will be provided by the college or university upon request. Mr. Sanchez will review the requested information prior to and following the event when considering the validity of granting an educational excused absence for the time missed away from school. Please refer to the St. Michael High School Student/Parent Handbook for further details regarding educational absences.

LSU APPLICATION REMINDER: APPLY EARLY! Applica-tions are now being accepted for the next fall semester at LSU. Although the priority date for full consideration for all LSU scholarship programs open to entering freshmen is December 15, seniors who are on target for meeting LSU admissions requirements should APPLY EARLY! The LSU Application for Undergraduate Admission and Scholarships also serves as the automatic application for all entering freshmen scholarships. To apply, go to the LSU Undergraduate Admissions website: www.lsu.edu/admissions. Students’ official high school transcripts, official ACT or SAT scores, and all other required information must be received by LSU prior to the December 15 deadline.

LSU HONORS COLLEGE APPLICATION: Freshmen entering LSU are eligible to apply to the Ogden Honors College. Students interest-ed in seeking admission to LSU’s Ogden Honors College should begin by completing the LSU Application for Undergraduate Admission and Schol-arships. Students may indicate their interest in the Ogden Honors College by simply checking the Honors College box on their LSU application. Incoming freshman applicants must first be admitted to LSU prior to their admission to the Honors College. Students will be notified of their Honors College admission status beginning in November and on a rolling basis thereafter. The deadline to apply and be considered for LSU’s Ogden Honors College is December 15.

MEETING FOR SENIORS AND THEIR PARENTS: All sen-iors and their parents are encouraged to attend the Senior Parent Meeting, An Evening with LSU & LOSFA. This event will be held on Wednesday, September 4, beginning promptly at 6:00 PM in the SMHS cafeteria. An LSU admissions counselor will be addressing LSU Undergraduate Admissions and steps to the application process. Fol-lowing the LSU presentation, a representative of the Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance (LOSFA) will be presenting critical infor-mation on TOPS and the importance of successfully completing the FAF-SA, which serves as the pr imary application for TOPS. Senior parents, please attend this event to learn very valuable information regarding ad-missions to LSU and receiving the TOPS scholarship.

PSAT INFORMATION FOR SOPHOMORES & JUNIORS: During the month of September, Mrs. Dutreix will distribute practice mate-rials for the PSAT to teachers. The materials will be used in both the Math and English classes for PSAT Prep. On October 16 from 7:15 AM—12:00 noon, all 11th grade students will sit for the PSAT, the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test and the preparatory version of the SAT. Also, St. Michael will be allowing 10th grade students to sit for the PSAT. The cost for Sophomores is $17. If your 10th grade student is interested in taking the PSAT, he or she must return the permission form to Mrs. Dutreix, the junior class counselor, at ldutreix@smhsbr.org no later than Friday, September 6. This form was given to sophomores during class and also through email. We must abide by the September 6 deadline to ensure that we have an accurate amount of testing materials. During the spring semester, Mrs. Dutreix will meet with students to interpret test scores and to discuss further resources for college and career readiness.

SENDING ACT SCORES: When registering for the ACT, a student may request that his/her score report be sent to a college or university. If requesting during the registration process, the first four (4) score reports are FREE and automatically sent once scores are processed. Additional score reports may be requested online for a fee at www.actstudent.org through the student’s account. Please make sure you are sending ACT scores to LOSFA using code 1595.

SENDING TRANSCRIPTS: Since St. Michael participates in the Louisiana Student Transcript System (STS), all transcripts will be sent electronically to the Louisiana Department of Education if parents provid-ed their written consent for us to do so. All Louisiana public colleges and universities will obtain applicants’ transcripts electronically through STS. Private colleges or out-of-state schools will need a transcript sent from St. Michael. A Transcript Request Form will need to be signed by the student and his/her parent. If you have any questions regarding this information, please contact Ms. Montgomery, Senior Counselor & College Advisor cmontgomery@smhsbr.org. For Dual Enrollment and AP credit students, the college transcript and/or AP credit will need to be requested from the accrediting institution.

SCHOOL HOLIDAY: There will be NO school on Monday, September 2, in

observance of Labor Day.

SELECTIVE SERVICE SYSTEM: The United States Selective Ser-vice System requires all young men to register with Selective Service within 30 days of their 18th birthday. In order to be in full compliance with the law, a man turning 18 is required to register during the period of time begin-ning 30 days before, until 30 days after, his 18th birthday...a 60-day win-dow. In addition, registration information may now be submitted as early as the age of 17 years and 3 months old. In cases of early registration (prior to the 60-day window), Selective Service will keep the information on file and then process it once the young man is within 30 days of reaching his 18th birthday. A card will then be mailed confirming that his registration has been processed. Failure to register is in violation of federal law. To regis-ter, please go to www.sss.gov.

LIBRARY NEWS: Did you know that free homework help is available online Sunday through Thursday from 2:00 PM—midnight? These free, one-on-one tutoring sessions include real-time chat, interactive white boards, math tools, etc. Simply log into homeworkla.org and enter your public library card number. Students may even upload their research papers or essays to receive live editing assistance! The website also includes free ACT and AP test prep quizzes as well as tutoring in Spanish and Vietnam-ese.

In addition, this year the SMHS National Honor Society members will be offering free tutoring on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays during the last 30 minutes of all lunch periods. Pop in the library to get help with homework, lab reports, and peer editing.

LETTERMAN JACKET ORDERS: On Wednesday, September 4, letterman jacket orders will be taken during all lunch periods for students who received an academic letter during Fall Awards and for students who lettered in Spring Sports this past school year. Packets are available for pick up in the office.

A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL: JOY is STRENGTH! What a wonderful way to star t the new school year! Finding Jesus in our hearts and

sharing his love with everyone we encounter. It is in being Jesus to others where real strength is found. The St.

Michael faculty, staff, and administration are grateful to all of our parents who partner with us to help educate and

form our students as committed disciples of Christ.

We were blessed this school year to begin with the opening of our new Multi-Purpose Building. Bishop Duca,

Dr. Melanie Palmisano, our Chaplain Father Paul Gros, the Edward L. Rispone family, and many of our support-

ers and stakeholders were present in August for the blessing of the building and our first Mass in our new facility.

After Mass, students enjoyed a picnic lunch, while guests were treated to refreshments and a tour of the building.

We continued to celebrate the start of the school year with Popsicle Day, Club Day, and our Back to School

Dance. The academic successes of our students from last year were recognized and celebrated at our Fall Honors

Assembly. At that assembly, National Honor Society members were inducted during a special ceremony. We

look forward to celebrating more of our achievements as the school year unfolds.

This beginning of a new school year reminds each of us how fortunate we are to be an important

part in offering a first-rate, Catholic education to the young men and young women entrusted to

our care. Please pray for our students, our parents, and our teachers as we grow and learn in this

wonderful school community rooted in Catholic tradition and gospel values.

An Important Message of Concern to Parents: Vaping has been in the news quite a bit lately, and the

news is not good. Vaping (or e-cigarettes) allows for stealth use of sleek devices that can go undetected even in a

classroom. Although the real dangers of vaping are not 100% clear, there has been a link between lung disease

in adolescents and young adults and vaping. The Louisiana Department of Health is investigating cases of severe

lung disease among individuals in Louisiana who report e-cigarette product use or vaping. According to the Cen-

ters for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there is at least one death and several cases of permanent lung

damage that have been linked to vaping. There is a potential for great harm to our students of which students and

parents should be aware.

A research team at Boston Children’s Hospital found that there is a strong association between youths with a his-

tory of vaping to subsequent marijuana use versus those without such histories. Many vaping devices can easily

be modified to allow users to experiment with other substances, including marijuana.

Please be sure to educate yourself as to what vaping devices and vaping pods look like. A few examples are

shown below. The pods can often be confused with small jump drives for the computer. Talk to your child about

the dangers of vaping, as many of the chemicals that go into vaping pods are unregulated and are potentially

harmful with effects on the brain and on the lungs that are yet unknown.

The CDC has an informative website that may help answer some question and help you start the conversation with your child. Log onto www.cdc.gov and search for dangers of vaping or https://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/basic_information/e-cigarettes/Quick-Facts-on-the-Risks-of-E-cigarettes-for-Kids-Teens-and-Young-Adults.html.

PRINCIPAL’S HONORS

These students maintained a 4.0 unweighted GPA for both semesters of the

2018-2019 school year.

St. Michael High Schools Annual Giving Campaign, the Warrior

Fund for Excellence, will be launched this month. The generous

support and dedicated commitment of parents, grandparents, alumni, and

friends allows St. Michael to continue to strengthen its financial future.

Tuition payments and related fees cover approximately 80% of the

school’s annual budget. The remainder of the budget is covered through

our fundraising efforts, the largest of these being the Warrior Fund for

Excellence. The annual budget at St. Michael High School helps sustain

and maintain excellence in our academic and instructional programs, extracurricular and athletic

programs, and the building and plant operations at St. Michael High School.

The Warrior Fund for Excellence is vital to the development and growth of each of these programs

at the school. This year you have the opportunity to give to one of three pre-designated areas includ-

ing academics, scholarships, and athletics. You can also select to give to the greatest area of need at

St. Michael High School.

The financial goal this year is to raise $60,000 from all donors. Make your gift today at

We were honored to serve as the Chair Family for the Warrior Fund for Excellence. St. Michael

High School is a very special place for our family. All three of our children have now attended St.

Michael as students.

We feel blessed that our girls chose St. Michael because we love the fellowship that the school com-

munity has provided for our entire family. St. Michael develops students spiritually, intellectually,

and personally through its advanced academics, creative arts, and athletics. The school is committed

to the development of young men and women as committed disciples of Christ.

As a parent, your financial support is vital to the continued growth and development of St. Michael High School. We encourage you to explore the opportunities and events that we offer to help keep our school com-munity thriving. Warrior Fund for Excellence – This is our annual giving campaign that will be launched in Septem-

ber. The funds from this drive are used to sustain and maintain excellence in our academic and instruc-

tional programs, extracurricular and athletic programs, and day to day building & operations.

Continuing the Warrior Legacy Capital Campaign – The Capital Campaign is the

building fund for St. Michael High School. This year we completed construction on the multipurpose

building. However, our fundraising efforts continue as we pay back the funds that have been borrowed

for the recent construction. You will be personally invited to join us in making a financial pledge of

support to this campaign. Your cooperation and support in this endeavor is vital to our continued suc-

cess as we continue moving forward. The next phase of our campaign is to address the back of the

campus by developing a track facility and football field. If you would like to give now, please visit

Warrior Golf Classic – November 11, 2019, at Greystone Country Club. This event is the primary

fundraiser for our athletic teams, extracurricular clubs, and activities at the school.

SMHS Auction—A Night in Italy – March 21, 2020 at St. Michael High School. The proceeds from

this event provide funding for academic programs and enhancements on our campus.

Corporate Partnership Program – This program offers businesses the opportunity to advertise and

partner with our school through a variety of outlets.

Students will review concepts, practice test questions, and learn

strategies to help them be successful on the ACT test.

registering is Wednesday, September 25th. If the course fills before

the deadline, there will be no more registration.

Deadline for registering for the October 26, 2019 ACT is September
