EBRSO Reaches Out During Isaac

Sheriff Sid Gautreaux and the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office began preparing for Hurricane Isaac a week before the storm hit by ensuring that all personnel and equipment were ready for de-ployment. Deputies went to 12-hour shifts prior to, during and following the storm in order to keep the parish safe and enforce the enacted curfew. “Safety for the public and our deputies was our number one pri-ority,” Sheriff Sid Gautreaux said. “Fortunately we saw very few incidents of crime. Once we knew we had things under control in our parish. We knew we needed to do what we could to help those in surrounding parishes that suffered much more dam-age.” After assessing and preparing for any needs in EBR parish,

EBRSO deployed additional deputies to assist Sheriffs in other

parishes throughout the state. (Continued Page 2)

(Isaac Contd.) The deputies staged with other Sheriff’s Offices as part of the JTF7 Task Force and the Louisiana Sheriff's Association Task Force. The Task Force sent deputies to Plaquemines, As-cension and St. John the Baptist parishes to assist with criminal patrols and night-time raid surveil-lance. Deputies in the river parishes helped prevent and catch looters that were burglarizing evacu-ated camps on the river. Back home in EBR, deputies with JTF7 located a missing barge on the Mississippi River in 62 feet of water out of the channel. The Coast Guard was then able to safely open the Sunshine Bridge to al-low traffic through. Deputies used the new Underwater Inspection System acquired by the JTF7 grant in order to locate the missing barge. Joint Task Force 7 (JTF7), formed in 2011, is a group made up of the seven Sheriff’s Offices border-ing the Mississippi River and the Greater Baton Rouge Area. The group includes members of the various agencies’ maritime response teams trained and prepared for operations on land and water.

“I want to thank all the deputies that worked so hard in and out of our parish for the storm.

So many of you worked long shifts, often at personal risk, to keep our residents and those in

other parishes safe. Thank you for your service.” -SHERIFF SID GAUTREAUX
