Board Meeting 7.00pm

Dear Parents, Welcome to Week 3 and there is so much going on I have written this newsletter under headings to try and fit it all in. Capital Works 1. The refurbishment to the third Reception room has been

completed and as our enrolments are now in the high 60’s for 2019 we will have three Reception classes.

2. The creation of a Schoolies room for the Long Transition

Program is almost complete. This room is located where the music suite was and the children and teachers will now have access to the garden from this room.

3. The refurbishment of the Music Room will be completed in

the next three weeks and lessons will return to this space from using the church.

4. Building the new classroom complex for Year 6 will

commence in June. Much work has been done by Gary, Ben and myself to bring the costs in under our budget. I am hopeful that I can present a detailed picture of our development in the next few weeks.

5. The Uniform Shop is now co-located with the music suite.

Leanne has done a great job in locating extra stock to our storage area. Volunteer help with uniform shop management would greatly assist us into the future.

Community 1. The winter sport program commenced last Saturday.

We have 203 students (out of 300) involved in a school activity. This is to be commended.

2. There will be limited sporting activity on weekends at

St Martin’s because of the building program. 3. Mr Buchannan is preparing the athletics team for the

Catholic School’s Carnival on Friday 15th June at Santos

Stadium. 4. The community is being asked to provide feedback on my work as part of my two year review. I encourage as many people as possible to participate in the survey monkey. The review process is part of my tenure. A successful review will mean an extension to my contract for 5 years. A random selection of Staff, Parents and School Board members will be interviewed by my Principal Consultant, Mr Mark Corrigan. A report will be presented to the community by the end of Term 2.

5. A lovely Mother’s Day Morning Tea was held last Friday. Thanks to Denise Allen and her

team for their great work.

6. The School Board Chair, Anthony Patterson, represented the school at a gathering of all

school board chairs of the Adelaide Archdiocese. The Director of Catholic Education, Mr Neil

McGorran, presented the CESA Strategy and there were two key questions that were

discussed :

1. How can you support the Principal in their leadership of the school in ensuring an excellent

Catholic education for all children and families ?

2. What are the implications of the Director’s presentation for the school’s strategic

directions ? Does the school’s strategy fit with the CESA strategy ?

Anthony will discuss these questions with the Board at our meeting next week.

7. On Wednesday May 16th Ben and myself are hosted an afternoon tea with our local

Preschools and Child Care Centres. It is really important to have good community connections

with these centres as we go about our work in supporting children and families in their role as

the first educators of their children.

8. QUIZ NIGHT QUIZ NIGHT QUIZ NIGHT – Saturday 18th

August.

A team to help organise this great fun night is now being formed. No experience

necessary BUT we urgently need help. Contact Gabby in the front office.

Learning

1. The staff continue their learning with the Corwin Institute and the Visible Learning approach to

classroom teaching. Our focus for this term is on student feedback. 2. We have commenced a new intervention program called Quicksmart. Leanne Gallagher and

Jack Mittiga (ESOs) have done their training with the University of New England and will work

with targeted students on improving their number work and recall. 3. Anne Smith and the Enviro Leaders have begun a project where food scraps are turned into

mulch for the garden. Special collection bins have been located in classrooms and the leaders

are responsible for making it all work. 4. This term, time in each staff meeting will be spent acknowledging individual children in

our school. Children will be introduced by their teachers and their character strengths

highlighted. The purpose of this is for everyone to know all the children more deeply

with a positive mindset.

I finish with a quote from Bernard Salt, a social demographer. He refers to the dispositions needed

by our children for a healthy future in Australia :

“ It will take persistence, hard work, training, resilience and the ability to identify and adapt to new

circumstances and opportunities.”

These are all good dispositions to think about in your conversations with the children.

God Bless,

Craig

OSHC NEWS:

BABY NEWS:

Due to Government changes to the Childcare System on July 2nd, it is important that you register with Centrelink as soon as possible. https://www.education.gov.au/ChildCarePackage We are currently working on our July School Holiday Program, which will be available from week 7. If your children are involved in sport/chess but still come to OSHC please fill in a sports/activity permission form and remind them to sign in at OSHC first. I would like to remind families that OSHC opens at 7.00am each morning and children should not arrive at the service before this time, as we are not licenced to accept them. Breakfast is only available until 8.00am. Please inform OSHC if your children are to be collected by someone other than yourself. Due to government regulations, it is mandatory that we meet the child and staff ratios so it is very important that parents notify OSHC if they are making extra bookings, have collected their children from school early or they are not attending on that day. We would like to remind families that OSHC and Vacation Care are NUT and Fish free environments. This is to support the health needs of children that are at risk of severe Allergic reactions. OSHC/ Vacation Care bookings and cancellations can be done via phone: 83218308 or Email: [email protected] . Regards Pam Adams
