It

often seems that everything is against us. The universe is

vast, and society is complex. No one seems to care what

we want. Part of that feeling is because we are creatures,

and therefore limited. But part of this is the result of

original sin, which causes us to want to make ourselves

the center of the world, and we view every desire as a

genuine need.

St. Paul, however, wrote to the Philippians that he had

learned to be content whether he had abundance or was

hungry. In fact, he could even write, “My God will fully

supply whatever you need, in accord with his glorious

riches in Christ Jesus.” His trust in the Lord was not some

sort of lofty sentiment expressed in comfort. No, he wrote

this while a prisoner in a miserable Roman jail.

When we have learned to view the world as St. Paul did,

from the perspective of trust in God, it changes the way

we view the gifts of time, talent, and treasure we have

received, and we want to use them for God’s glory and

the service of others. Then we’ll experience the Messianic

banquet of which the Eucharist is the foretaste and accept

Jesus’ invitation, the only invitation that really matters.

An Anonymous Reflection………………

August 23, 2011, the feast of St. Rose of Lima, marked the First Anniversary of the Matthew 25:35

Food Pantry. The pantry, the soup kitchen and the thrift store are the three components of the St. Martin

de Porres Outreach Ministry.

During the first year, the faithful and faith-filled volunteers at the pantry have seen the gospel in action

thanks to the parish family of St. Martin de Porres Church. We have said from the beginning that this is not our program; it is the Lord’s program. If it is His

will, He will provide. And provide He did --and continues to do so. We have seen a version of the

“Multiplication of the Loaves and the Fishes”, when the shelves are almost bare and someone brings in

EXACTLY what is needed to meet the needs of our brothers and sisters. “Give us this day our daily Bread”.

We have seen the face of the Lord in the humility of those who must now ask for food, many of them for the first time. We receive their thanks and blessings, but

the food is not from us - it is from the parish community and ultimately from our Lord, Who is giver

of all good things.

We have seen a version of the “Widow’s Mite”, when we accept donations from those who have so little for

themselves.

Yes, we as a community, we are doing our best to see the Lord in what we do:

“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and

you welcomed me…” Matthew 25:35

R.C.I.A. - Conversion

Conversion: What is it and what does it mean?

Conversion means change, moving from where we are to where God would have us.

Conversion affects every part of our being, giving us a new way of understanding ourselves

and the world around us.

Conversion is an on-going, lifelong process initiated by God.

We do not control conversion – we accept it as coming from God, drawing us closer to Him and His unconditional love,

which we then willingly share with others. .

Join us! No RSVP necessary.

RCIA Welcome Committee

Are you a friendly Catholic? Would you be willing to sit with the RCIA

candidates during the 10:45 Mass? Sit in on our weekly sessions? No preparation

necessary, just friendly faces! We need as many people possible to help welcome in our new

RCIA candidates...in whatever capacity you're able to offer. Let's give them a real welcome showing our candidates the real faces of the

Catholic Church!

Collection Procedure Change

Starting at the Vigil Mass next weekend, we will begin taking up both collections in the same basket during the Offertory. Please place your envelopes for

both the first and second collections in the basket at this time. There will not be a collection taken up after the reception of

Holy Communion.

Thanks for your support!

Prayer for Leaders

Dear Lord, We pray that You will create among us

Catholic leaders, individuals made in Your image who will apply Your teachings in their lives and positively impact our

families, our workplace our communities and our Church.

Help us to inspire those with whom we come in contact to share their God-given

talents, to do Your will and to find a place in Your Kingdom where their deepest joys and the world’s deepest hungers meet and cry for their special qualities and abilities. Make us leaders, Lord, leaders with strength and courage to follow You.

Leaders who make Your love visible to the world in all of our words and

actions.

Amen.

Last year's event was so successful. We had fun learning about the Saints.

Do you have a favorite Saint? Are you curious about a particular Saint? Who is the Patron Saint of Education?

The children should start planning! Look for more details in the Religious Education Building.

Mass Participation- Our 4th/5th graders are participating at 9:00 am Mass on October

9th. They will be lectors, gift bearers and ushers. Please look for them and tell them

"Great Job"!

If you have any questions regarding our Religious Education Program, please contact Julie Breen at

[email protected] or 334-4214 ext. 25.
