~ from the desk of the Pastor ~
On Sunday, January 29, kick-off weekend for this year’s Diocesan Services Appeal, our Parish held the video portion of the presentation following the Prayer After Communion since I deemed it more liturgically appropriate and fitting, especially in light of the recent changes to the Roman Missal and our efforts to regain a more solemn reverence for the Holy Mass. As I asked the Congregation to please be seated and introduced Bishop Barbarito after the 10:45 am Mass, nearly one-third or perhaps more of the people got up and walked out. Even as the
video progressed from its melodic Prelude to Bishop’s introductory remarks, people were still leaving the Sacred Space and even then … not all discreetly. Several people were clearly seen ambling up along the side aisles to exit the Church from the northeast and southeast doors. I was both shocked and dismayed. At the conclusion of the video, I asked the remaining faithful to simply look around and see how empty the Church had become … to which could easily be heard the gasp of disbelief. Once again, I thank those of you who chose to remain … for it was the right and respectful thing to do! Since our Shepherd is unable to visit each and every parish, the video allows us to both see and hear from our Bishop in a very personal and intimate way. The very least we can do is accord this holy man of God and chief Pastor of souls in our Diocese the dignity and respect he deserves. In my estimation, to have such a blatant disregard for Bishop or for any priest-servant of Jesus Christ is inexcusable!
For those who had to leave due to work or perhaps attend to a loved one or for some other valid and unavoidable reason, please know you acted justly. But for those who chose to do so indiscriminately without having any other imminent concerns … well then … I hope this letter gets your attention. Whether you are year-round residents or here on vacation or only part-time winter residents, neither reality truly excuses the action. If Bishop Barbarito had been physically present and chose to speak at the end of Communion, I am quite certain a different response would have been elicited from everyone. If not, then “Father, forgive them, for they … surely must not know
… what they are doing!”
As I pondered later in the day, I couldn’t help but wonder if this very sad and unfortunate unfolding was at all attributable to a misunderstanding on the part of some Catholics. I say this simply due to the fact that throughout our efforts to distribute Offertory envelopes this year, as well as in years past, we repeatedly hear time and time again, “We’re snowbirds!” or “We don’t belong to this Parish!” or still yet, “Our parish is back home!” In any case, what is explicitly clear is the fact that many of our people remain not only unregistered but also I believe,
misguided in what they may deem as their rightful duty as faithful stewards of “time, talent and treasure.” Perhaps this is part and parcel of a problem that exists not only in our Parish but in parishes throughout Florida and anywhere that a part-time domicile is established. Now what I must make perfectly clear is that I’m not
suggesting that all or even most of the people who walked out at the end of Mass were only visitors or “snowbirds.” We all know sadly enough, there are those who leave each week right after receiving Our Lord in the august Sacrament of Holy Communion … permanent residents and visitors alike. And notwithstanding the annual Bishop’s appeal, regardless of which Diocese or Archdiocese one elects to contribute, this far-reaching
problem is constitutive of the “cafeteria” Catholicism that continues to mitigate commitment and contributes to an improperly formed moral conscience endemic to our Church, our faith … in fact, our very lives and living.
As faithful stewards, we are each called to give back to God our first-fruits … to freely and willingly offer to God
from the total sum of our earnings a just portion of what was given to us by God … usually a tenth. And no doubt many of you do. However, what seems to be apparent and a gross misunderstanding is that many Catholics feel that since they are only here for a short while … perhaps two to three months a year … then they do not need to contribute to the local Church in which they worship and simply continue to give to their “home” parish. Or what’s worse … and I know this for certain first-hand … that they are reminded before leaving for the winter that
their money belongs “there” and hence not to forget sending in your envelopes. Now I ask you to consider another viewpoint. Just as you depend upon services that you pay for and that are included in your rent or home association fees, as well as, having to pay utilities and perhaps property taxes, so too is it only fitting and morally
just that you financially support the parish that provides you the benefit of the absolute best service of all … spiritual nourishment and Sacramental Grace for your soul … whether you’re here for a week, a month or six
months! We too depend upon your contributions to help maintain this beautiful Church (that was built with you in mind) and these Holy Grounds that continue to build-up the Kingdom of God here in this little corner of
Florida’s Treasure Coast. (Cont. next page)
Furthermore, we continually ask that you register at the Parish even if you are here for a short while and make use of envelopes or electronic payment. It is vitally necessary that we have updated personal information so as to provide you with the very best of care beyond weekly Mass attendance. Many times there have been occasions when someone falls ill or suddenly passes away and we have no means of contacting family or friends or to know if there is a “Living Will” in case of trauma or the inability to communicate. And to be perfectly frank, the use of
envelopes or other viable means to record contributions and regular attendance is the best means for us to determine one’s consistent “active participation” when the need arises to attest if “so and so” are Catholics in good standing, such as on Sponsor Forms for Confirmation or Baptism. Additionally, actively registered and
contributing parishioners also enjoy preferential treatment serving in Liturgical Ministry and other benefits, such as reduced or waived fees for use of our renovated Parish Hall for Repasts or other occasions. As a registered and actively participating and contributing member of our Faith Community, you are recognized in large part as a Catholic in good standing “here below” and please God, in the fullness of time when the Lord comes in His
Glory, in the Book of Life in Heaven above! God bless you!
In Jesus and Mary always! Fr. James
January 26, 2012 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
I write to you concerning an alarming matter that negatively impacts the Church in the United States and strikes at the fundamental right to religious liberty for all citizens of any faith. The federal government, which is meant to be “of, by,
and for the people,” has just enacted a grave injustice to almost a quarter of those people—the Catholic population—and to the millions more who are served by the Catholic faithful.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recently announced that almost all employers, including Catholic
employers, will be forced to offer their employees’ health coverage that includes sterilization, abortion-inducing drugs, and contraception. Almost all health insurers will be forced to include such so called “services” in the health policies they write. And almost all individuals will be forced to buy that coverage as a part of their policies. That means we will have no choice but to cover the cost for health insurance in order to provide practices that we, as Catholics, consider immoral and cannot choose in good conscience.
In so ruling, the Administration has violated the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, denying to Catholics our Nation’s first and most fundamental freedom, that of religious liberty. And as a result, unless the rule is overturned, we Catholics will be denied the right to follow our moral consciences, as well as the ability to offer health coverage for our employees. The Administration has given our institutions one year to comply.
We cannot simply do nothing in the face of this unjust law. People of faith should not be made second class citizens. We are already joined by our brothers and sisters of all faiths and many others of good will in an imperative effort to regain our religious freedom. Our parents and grandparents did not come to these shores to help build America’s cities and towns, its infrastructure and institutions, its enterprise and culture, only to have their posterity stripped of their God given rights. In generations past, the Church has always been able to count on the faithful to stand up and protect her sacred rights and duties. I know she can count on this generation of Catholics to do the same. Our children and grandchildren deserve nothing less.
Therefore, I would ask of you two things. First, as a community of faith we must commit ourselves to prayer and action so that justice may prevail and religious liberty be restored. Without God, we can do nothing; with God, nothing is impossible. Second, please visit www.usccb.org/conscience, to learn more about this severe assault on religious liberty, and how to contact Congress in support of legislation that would reverse the Administration’s decision.
With gratitude for your attention to this most serious matter and with every prayerful wish, I am
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Gerald M. Barbarito Bishop of Palm Beach

How does one spend an hour before Jesus exposed
in the Blessed Sacrament?
We currently must fill 8 early morning hours over the next few weeks. The early morning hours are incredibly peaceful hours that allow you to offer a personal sacrifice of love for Him Who sacrificed for you. Please pray, and ask God if He is calling you to one special hour. Allow the Holy Spirit to touch your heart and fill it with a burning desire to spend
one hour with the Lord. The Lord welcomes you at any hour, but please consider one of the following hours. Contact Lisa at 772-215-7123 or [email protected] for more
information and to schedule your time.
Matters of Life and Death
Assisted suicide as a medical treatment fails to
respect patients rights and dignity.
As more states allow assisted suicide and
euthanasia, everyone over the age of 18 should have
a well-drafted durable power of attorney for health
care, which designates someone to make medical
decisions on his or her behalf if they become unable
to make those decisions on their own. This is
different from a living will, which is a potentially

Stewardship of God’s Word: Reading the Bible Reflectively
“Your word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
These words from Psalm 119:105 are words that stir the hearts of Christian stewards; for stewards of the Lord long for His word to guide every aspect of their life and journey. February is a transitional month. Many of us begin to hope that spring is around the next corner. The first seed catalogue we find in the mail reminds us this must be true, yet we know it’s not time to turn the soil. We wait in the quiet of late winter. What better time than February to settle in for some reading and praying with sacred scripture? Our liturgical year provides us with a wonderful pathway to the Bible by providing Lectionary readings for each day. Our Sunday Gospel readings this year come to us mainly from Saint Mark. This Gospel, which scholars believe was the first to be written, is ideal for spending time with the Lord in quiet meditation. The Gospel of Saint Mark is perhaps, stylistically, the simplest of the four Gospels, and certainly the shortest. One could read the entirety of Saint Mark in one sitting, and you may choose to do that. But then go back and read the Gospel slowly, more reflectively. Consider just one episode in the Gospel in each sitting. Put yourself into the scene. See what words strike a chord in you. Ask Christ to help you know him through the Gospel reading. One of the best-loved lines of scripture is presented to us on a Sunday early in February. Speaking of Jesus, the Gospel writer affirms that, “In the morning, long before dawn, he got up and left the house and went off to a lonely place to pray …” (Mk. 1:35). The Gospels teach us that Jesus himself prayed to his Father, and employed the Hebrew scriptures of his own tradition. When we see Jesus, long before dawn, going off to be alone with his Father, we know that he brought with him the words of scripture which were planted as seeds within him. One of the hallmarks of Saint Mark’s Gospel is his frequent, insistent use of the phrase, “at once.” He writes with a forceful sense of immediacy. Reading Saint Mark, one senses that the important work of following Christ should not be put off, but must be done “at once.” Christian stewards long for the seeds of scripture to be planted in their own hearts. They know God’s gift of time carries with it a sense of immediacy. The month of February, a time transition, is a perfect time to deepen our knowledge of Christ through scripture.

Gracious God,
You sent us Your Spirit to help us live the Gospel
according to the gifts we have been given.
Show us how to be good stewards of your grace and
passionate followers of Christ, Your Son.
Grant us the wisdom to recognize that
through His gift of the Eucharist there is one bread,
and we are one body.
Give us the strength to proclaim His Good News
in word and deed.
And teach us to live, no longer for ourselves,
but in Jesus Christ who lives and reigns with You
and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever.
AMEN.

In today’s Gospel we hear of a great number of suffering
people seeking the healing touch of Jesus. He could not
respond to them all. But the Gospel also reveals Jesus, after
praying in solitude, sensing an urgency to proclaim the Good
News of his Father’s redemptive love to those who suffer in
the nearby villages and towns. Stewards are called to follow
in Jesus’ footsteps, to respond to those who suffer with
compassion. How are we responding to the suffering in our
world? How are we using our gifts to continue the works of
Christ’s redemptive healing?
