About Saint Martin de Porres Academy
Our Mission
Saint Martin de Porres Academy is a faith-based, NativityMiguel model
middle school that provides a tuition-free, extended day education for
underserved girls and boys from low-income families in the New Haven
area. We are an independent Catholic school committed to a belief in
the dignity and worth of every person. We strive to provide each child
with a promising start in life and to equip them to fulfill their academic
potential while achieving spiritual and social maturity. We welcome
children of all faiths, races and cultures.
Our Vision
The vision of Saint Martin de Porres Academy is to break the
generational cycle of poverty through education and opportunity. Our
goal is to provide urban boys and girls the opportunity to choose a
quality education that will allow them to live up to their full potential. At
the Academy, we promote more than academic excellence - we cultivate
personal responsibility, social skills and leadership, balanced with a
strong spiritual foundation, and a recognition of the need to serve others.

Welcome!
On behalf of the entire Saint Martin de Porres Academy family,
we thank you for participating in our 13th Annual Golf-Fore-Kids
Tournament and for helping us raise scholarship dollars
for the children who need it most.
What we do works!
In a community where less than 77% of students graduate from high
school, we celebrate a 97% high school graduation rate and
a 97% college acceptance rate. It takes the dedication of many hands
and hearts, from our staff members and volunteers to supporters and
donors like you to achieve this success!
Thank you for your caring leadership and for sharing all your gifts in
support of the incredible students you’ll meet here this evening.
They are truly what opportunity looks like!
Gratefully,

“College has been, by far, the best and most
important four years of MY life. I attended Fairfield
University where I just graduated this year with a
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science. I am living
proof that each and every one of [SMPA’s students]
CAN do it!”

Benjamin Surowiecki First Tee Scholarship
Our Saint Martin de Porres Academy
family continues to honor the memory
of our good friend and loyal supporter
Ben Surowiecki. Husband of our
founding Academic Principal, Mary
Surowiecki, Ben spent innumerable
hours with us for months before we opened in 2005. His
involvement and commitment continued throughout his life.
In our early years, most of his energy went into behind the
scenes work—the painting, the repairing—work that made
SMPA a welcoming place for our students and staff. He
was also an exceptional golfer. He was instrumental in
launching our student First Tee Golf Program. In his
humble, quiet, and caring way, Ben’s passion for golf has
impacted many of our students.
In his honor, Mary and their three sons established the Ben
Surowiecki First Tee Scholarship Fund to provide high
school tuition assistance to students who have been involved in
First Tee. The scholarships are presented annually at this
tournament. Those interested in contributing to this Fund may
contact SMPA at [email protected] or
(203) 772-2424. Please make donations payable to Saint
Martin de Porres Academy.
Your support honors the memory of one of our dearest friends
and helps provide opportunities for our kids that would
otherwise be unattainable. Ben would be so very pleased!
2019 Benjamin Surowiecki First Tee Scholarship Recipient
Mohamed Elsankary Class of 2025
Saint Martin de Porres Academy graduate Mohamed Elsankary is the recipient of the 2019 Ben Surowiecki Scholarship. While at SMPA, Mohamed played the trombone, participated in Arts & Crafts, Chess Club, Fix-it Club and was on the Basketball and Soccer teams. Mohamed especially enjoyed going on school trips. One of his favorite memories is his 6th grade class field trip to Farms for City Kids where he learned to milk a cow while spending the week on a working dairy farm. Mohamed’s polite, soft-spoken and hard-working nature has earned him the respect of teachers and peers alike. He is kind and supportive, academically gifted and an outstanding example of an enthusiastic, determined student. He attends Hamden Hall Country Day School where he participates in Chess Club, Investment Club, The Biology Olympiad and Varsity Soccer and Basketball. Outside of school he enjoys being a caddy at the New Haven Country Club. He is working towards becoming an Evan's Scholar one day – a full-tuition scholarship program for students who are golf caddies and excel in academics. Mohamed plans to study Dentistry in college and says he “looks forward to the day he can give back to Saint Martin’s.”

“If it wasn’t for someone believing in the mission of
Saint Martin de Porres and, in turn, believing in me,
I would not have had the opportunities that I have
been granted. Because of your support, so many
doors have opened in my favor.”
- Judith, Class of 2021
“Every graduate of Saint Martin de Porres
Academy learns from the day we walk
through the doors that education is our
most powerful weapon, our ticket out of
poverty. Your support of our school
means everything to us and we do not
take it for granted.”
- Mishell, Class of 2019
“Going to Saint Martin’s does not mean that
you are any less than your counterparts who
have more resources than you. Going to
Saint Martin’s means opening doors that you
previously thought were un-openable. It’s not
a matter of where I came from; it’s a matter
of what opportunities I had.”
