St. Ann Parish Mission Statement We are called by a loving God

to make St. Ann of Lansing a Catholic community of faith. We are a family of diverse people with various ministries: healing the body and spirit, teaching of God and His love,

united in sacraments and prayer, reaching out to the extended community. With God’s revelation of Himself in Scripture as our guide,

we strive to grow in His Spirit and to fulfill the promise of Christ’s Kingdom.

Today’s Readings First Reading — God brought us into this land flowing with milk and honey (Deuteronomy 26:4-10). Psalm — Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble (Psalm 91). Second Reading — The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart (Romans 10:8-13). Gospel — Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus was led into the desert for forty days (Luke 4:1-13). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from the Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.

Today is the First Sunday of Lent. Starting with Ash Wednesday, we now journey thru Lent for 40 days and 40 nights, as we look forward to Easter. The Responso-rial Psalm is “Be with me, Lord, when I am in trou-ble.” (Psalm 91:1-2,10-11,12-13,14-15) Our verse be-fore the Gospel is, “One does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4b)

For Christmas, a dear friend gave me a book entitled “Count your Blessings” by Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, Amy Newmark, Laura Robinson and Elizabeth Bryan, the authors of “Chicken Soup for the Soul.” There are some excellent quotes that begin each and eve-ry chapter, and I would like to share them with you, so you can reflect on them during Lent.

“Coincidence is God’s way of remaining anonymous.” Albert Einstein

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life.” Melody Beattie

“I am beginning to learn that it is the sweet, simple things of life which are the real ones after all.”

Laura Ingalls Wilder

“My home is not a place, it is people.” Lois McMaster Bujold

“While we try to teach our children all about life, our children teach us what life is all about.”

Angela Schwindt

Each week I’ll add to your list. Some people do things rather than give up things for Lent. What is your thing? Add prayer all around.

Serving Him Together,

Together Let Us Cause God Joy

SUNDAY BIBLE STUDY During Lent we will be reading and reflecting on the three Scripture readings for the following Sunday. We began Sunday, February 10, and will continue all throughout Lent. We will gather in the Chapel after the 10:30 Mass.

Lectors Proclaim the Word of God “Speak O Lord, for your servant is listening. I say, your servant, because at last I am such. I am your servant and I want to be. I want to walk in your way all the days and nights of my life. Fill me with a spirit to understand what your holy plans are for me.” I Samuel 3:1-20

Lectors at St. Ann’s are the “servants” who proclaim the Word of God at Saturday, Sunday and Holy Day Masses. They ask God to fill them with the Holy Spirit as they proclaim the Bible Scrip-tures, with their goal being to enhance the experience of the litur-gy for the parishioners. Lectors strive to help bring the printed word to life, giving a voice to God’s Word.

Lectors are scheduled to read one to four times in a two-month period. The schedules are usually planned for two months at a time, and lectors can indicate dates they cannot read and a preference of Mass times. Holy Days are includ-ed in separate sign-up sheets.

Lectors meet four times a year as a ministry, and new lectors attend a training coordinated with their schedule. Parishioners must be high school-aged or older to join this ministry. If you have any questions about the lector ministry or wish to join us, please call the Parish Office at 708-895-6700.

February 16-17, 2013

Dear Friends,

As I write this letter, I smell like smoke . . . I have just come from the annual Burning of Palm Branches. Father Bill was kind enough to in-vite the school community to watch him burn the holy palms that will be used as ashes on Ash Wednesday. The children were excited to see this ceremony, and perhaps the receiving of Ashes will be even more meaningful this time.

Please pray for our parents, teachers, and students during this holy season of Lent. We will keep you in our pray-ers as well. We will be praying more, giving to the poor through Operation Rice Bowl, collecting food for the Lansing Food Pantry, and studying about the life and works of Jesus. We are very grateful to have a Catholic School so we can celebrate the 40 days that lead up to Easter.

There will be no school tomorrow, February 18, in cele-bration of Presidents' Day. The children have been learning about Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, and the world leaders of today. We pray for our leaders daily.

We were very sad to learn that St. Kieran School in Chi-cago Heights is closing at the end of this school year. Several families have come to visit St. Ann, since they have heard our GOOD NEWS about Education. Please spread the word that we will be opening registration as soon as we get a tuition figure from the Parish Finance Committee. We will try to keep any increase at a mini-mum.

God love and bless you for your support of our Tuition Assistance Fund and our School.

Students in Grades 2-7 will take Terra Nova Tests dur-ing the first week of March . . . time is flying! Be sure to purchase your Pot of Gold Raffle Tickets since this fundraiser helps our Parish help our School!

In December, the Lansing Knights of Columbus Council 3540 held an essay contest with the theme, “The Importance of Reli-gious Freedom.” The competition was open to all Catholic stu-dents—in public, private or parochial schools—in grades 8 through 12 during the current school year.

Pictured here with Matthew Martinez, Recorder for the Lansing Council, are the winners, all students at St. Ann School: First Place, Faith Robertson; Second Place, Sarai del Real; and Third Place, Natalie Kuipers.

The Knights of Columbus is an international, Catholic, family, fraternal service organization with more than 1.8 million mem-bers in over 14,000 local councils. In 2010 alone, the Knights donated 70 million volunteer hours and $154 million to charitable and benevolent causes, sponsoring projects to benefit their church, councils, communities, culture of life, families and young people.

Beginning February 18 and contin-uing for five Mondays, St. Ann’s will present a free video/discussion series: Faith Clips, 50 Theologi-cal and Spiritual Questions about the Catholic Faith by Rev. Robert E. Barron, creator and host of the Catholicism series. The program will be held from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the Church and will explore such questions as:

Why do we believe in God? How do we know we are encountering God? (February 18)

What is the Trinity? Can God be both one and many? (February 25)

Why did Jesus have to die the way he did? How do we know Jesus rose from the dead? Do sin-ners have any way of getting into Heaven? (March 4)

What is required of us to be saved? What is spir-ituality? Why is Mary known as the Seat of Wis-dom? (March 11)

What are the different types of Prayer? Can our prayers change God’s mind? Why doesn’t God answer our prayers? (March 18).
