St. Ann Parish Mission Statement We are called by a loving God

to make St. Ann of Lansing a Catholic community of faith. We are a family of diverse people with various ministries: healing the body and spirit, teaching of God and His love,

united in sacraments and prayer, reaching out to the extended community. With God’s revelation of Himself in Scripture as our guide,

we strive to grow in His Spirit and to fulfill the promise of Christ’s Kingdom.

May Baptisms

Today is the Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, and the Responsorial Psalm is, “Lord, you are good and forgiv-ing.” (Psalm 86:5-6,9-10,15-16) Matthew's Gospel today is about the mustard seed, which is the smallest of seeds, and it also talks about the good seed and the enemies scattering weeds.

THE TRAIN OF LIFE

Life is like a journey on a train... with its stations... with changes in routes… and with accidents. At birth, we boarded the train and met our parents, and we believed that they would always travel with us at their sides.

However, at some station our parents will step down from the train, leaving us on this journey alone.

As time goes by, other people will board the train; and they will be significant, i.e., our siblings, friends, children and even the loves of our lives.

Many will step down and leave a permanent vacuum. Others will go so unnoticed that we don't realize that they vacated their seats! This train ride will be full of joy, sorrow, fantasy, expectations, hellos, goodbyes, and fare-wells.

Success consists of having a good relationship with all the passengers...requiring that we give the best of our-selves. The mystery to everyone is: We do not know at which station we ourselves will step down. So, we must live in the best way―love, forgive and offer the best of who and what we are. It is important to do this because when the time comes for us to step down and leave our seat empty, we should leave behind beautiful memories for those who will continue to travel on the train of life.

I wish you a joy-filled journey for the coming year ahead on your train of life. Reap success, and give lots of love, and most importantly, thank God for the journey. Lastly, I thank you for being one of the passengers on my train! Keep smiling and praying. The best is yet to be...

St. Ann 2014 penny drive pennies for plowing

Winter may be over, but we’re still buried, and every penny counts as we strive to “drive” away our 32k 2014 snow plow debt. So over the course of the sum-mer, we invite you to help us “make cents” of the situation. Break open your piggy banks, dig into the couch cushions, dump out your change purses, look under the car floor mats, and empty your pockets of pennies. If you’d like to unburden yourself of other larger coins (or bills, checks, etc.), we would be happy to have those as well! It might not seem like much, but one annoying little penny at a time can quickly add up to many helpful dol-lars if enough of us bring them in.

pennies for perks We have challenged regular attendees of each weekend Mass to bring in at least 200,000 pennies over the summer, which would total $2,000 per Mass. The Mass that brings in the most money in total will win a special hospitality at the conclusion of the Drive. The final results and the winning Mass will be announced at Frankfest on September 12.

keep saving those pennies! In only three weeks, we’re more than 1/3 of the way to our $6,000 goal! You guys have been amazing, and the competition is getting stiffer! This week, 8:30 and 10:30 were nearly even until a $100 check from

a generous donor tipped the scales in 8:30’s direc-tion! The collection bottles are in the Narthex to the right of the church doors before and after every weekend Mass. If you’d rather drop your contribu-tion at the Parish Office during the week, please be sure to indicate which Mass you would like to have credited.

GOOD NEWS FOR CONFIRMANDI! Are you a 2014-2015 Confirmation student who would like to get started on your volunteer hours this sum-mer? If you answered “yes,” then join us Sunday, July 27 to help set-up prior to and clean-up after the Annual Parish Picnic! You can also help with the children's/family games and concessions. Set-up will be from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., and clean-up will be from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Games and concession times will be from 11:30 to 2:30, and you can sign up for hour shifts. If you are interested, please fill out a Confirmandi form and return it to the Parish Office by June 30—these can be found at the office or in the Narthex by the Ministry Fly-ers. If you have any questions, please call Debbie Bo-na at 895-6700.

YOU’RE INVITED . . . . . . to the St. Ann Parish Picnic on Sunday, July 27 after the 10:30 Mass. This year’s theme is Old Fashioned Family Fun! Food for purchase will in-clude hot dogs, hamburgers, pork chops and corn on the cob from Big Guy BBQ Chicago, pret-zels, snow cones, popcorn, cotton candy, nachos and sweets from our dessert table. Join in the fun with children’s games like Bozo buckets and fami-ly games including a water balloon toss, three-legged race, and hula hoop hoopla! We will also have a bean bag tournament and an obstacle course for kids of all ages . . . Mom and Dad, that means you too! There will even be a Bears vs. Packers Pinata Smash! Tables and chairs will be there, but you can bring your own, too.

WE NEED A LI’L HELP . . . Join the St. Ann Parish Picnic team! Our commit-tee leaders want to make sure everyone enjoys themselves at the picnic, so we need some adult assistance with the concessions, food ticket sales, children’s and adults’ games, and setup and clean up. We are also looking for donations of chil-dren’s prizes like bubbles, sidewalk chalk, Fris-bees, and individually wrapped candy. Please drop your contri-butions at the Parish Office, or if you are interest-ed in helping, call Debbie Bona at 895-6700.

EARLY BIRD DRAWING AT THE AUGUST 2 CRUISE NIGHT!

Dear Friends,

Do you have a few daytime hours a month that you would like to fill? The St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Ann’s is in need of caring volunteers.

Our ministry is devoted to assisting the needy of Lansing. We call on them at their homes to see which areas they need help the most. We make our house calls two at a time―no one ever goes alone, not just for safety, but because two people can better assess the situation. We offer help with rent, utilities, gas for car to seek employment or go to the doctor, help with prescription costs. We give St. Vincent thrift store clothing vouchers to people looking for clothes to get back in the work force or to a family in need of clothes (this is no cost to us). We listen to their financial situa-tion; give them advice as to other sources that can give them aid.

Our volunteers must give aid without prejudice to race or religion and treat all with respect. At the same time, we have to decide who is truly in need and who is not. We take very seriously the fact that our parishioners have donated their hard-earned money to our ministry, and we do our best to ensure it goes to people who are in a financial slump and not just looking for someone else to pay their bills.

Being part of this ministry is a blessing. Knowing that you are able to help relieve a deserving person or family’s burden is quite satisfying.

IT IS MOST IMPORTANT that whatever you do as an individual or the ministry as a whole is never discussed with anyone. Our work is an offering to God, and He is the only one we ever dis-cuss it with. I feel there are parishioners who are desperately in need of our help but who hesitate to contact us because they be-lieve other parishioners will know their circumstances; this never happens because we treat everyone with respect and confidential-ly.

You may be a very caring person who would like to give of your time to help others but you feel you do not have the knowledge necessary for this ministry. Do not let that stand in the way of your decision to join us. Everyone receives training as to how we can help others; you never make decisions alone.

If you feel St. Vincent de Paul of St. Ann is for you, or if you need more information about our ministry, please fill out the slip below and return it to the Parish Office.

Peace, Darlene Thompson --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NAME:
