As the only Anglo-American professional organization
founded to promote and advance original work in film, television

as a link between the Hollywood and British production and entertainment business communities. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________
A California non-profit public benefit corporation, BAFTA Los Angeles is a local
organization with a global reach. As the L.A. branch of the British Academy of Film
and Television Arts, headquartered in London, we represent not only our 1,200 members,
but the full 6,500 Academy members based in the United Kingdom, New York and Los Angeles.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________
Membership in the Academy is both highly sought after and highly
exclusive – applicants must be proposed and seconded by existing Academy
members and thus represent the very top professionals in their various fields; from award
winning writers, actors and directors, to key managers, network and studio executives and agents.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________
We host stellar parties and awards ceremonies, honoring achievement in
film and television, and produce educational events and seminars for our membership.
But we also seek to form a bridge between our industry and the wider community, offering
scholarships, student film awards, high school Shakespeare workshops, inner-city screening programs
and parties, putting our membership’s incredible expertise to astounding effect in the Los Angeles community.

to a director whose work is
distinguished by ingenuity. Past
recipients have included: ANTHONY MINGHELLA, CHRISTOPHER NOLAN, DANNY BOYLE, JIM SHERIDAN and PETER WEIR.

the Red Carpet special and the
awards show on the weekend
following the ceremony.
Highlights of the ceremony and

tvguide.com. The live event and the
television airings garner widespread
media coverage.
THE EVENT
The Britannia Awards are held at the
Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills and
are attended by 1,000 invited guests.
The black tie evening begins with a
star-studded Red Carpet lined with
key worldwide media outlets.
While guests enjoy a reception and Silent Auction outside the Ballroom,
Honorees, Presenters and select guests
mingle during Cocktail Hour at a
hosted VIP Reception.
Guests and VIPs then proceed to the
ballroom for dinner followed by the
live Awards Show. A hosted After Party
ends the evening.
THE 21st BRITANNIA AWARDS November, 2012
The Britannia Awards began as a
much smaller gala dinner, with just one
honoree, and remained thusly until 1999. Early recipients included: DUSTIN HOFFMAN, ANTHONY HOPKINS , MICHAEL CAINE, PETER USTINOV, JOHN TRAVOLTA and MARTIN SCORSESE.
While they have evolved into a multi-
award ceremony and Hollywood
party, the unique appeal of the
Britannia Awards remains its intimacy,
conviviality, spontaneity and its classically British sense of proportion.

COMMUNITY EDUCATION AND OUTREACH
THE BRITISH ACADEMY OF FILM AND TELEVISION ARTS LOS ANGELES is a non-
profit organization, founded in 1987, that
supports, develops and promotes the art
forms of the moving image by
identifying and rewarding excellence,
inspiring practitioners and benefiting the
public.
As part of London-based BAFTA, our Los
Angeles members and activities often
serve as the bridge between the US and
British entertainment businesses and
communities.
There are 5,300 members of BAFTA
based in the U.K, Scotland, Wales and
New York with a further 1,200 in Los
Angeles. Our members come from all
aspects of the entertainment industry
and are actively engaged in their craft.
The charitable remit of BAFTA Los
Angeles is of great importance to the
Academy as is being a contributing part
of the Los Angeles community.
Our Community Education and Outreach
Programs strive to bring screenings and other
aspects of the film and television industry to
underserved communities and inspire the next
generation of those who want a career in the
entertainment industry or who just love film and
television.
BAFTA Los Angeles has been recognized by the
Los Angeles City Council, People For Parks and
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.
In April 2010, BAFTA Los Angeles was
commended by the County of Los Angeles “in
recognition of dedicated services to the affairs
of the community and for the civic pride
demonstrated”.
COMMUNITY EDUCATION AND OUTREACH
In 2004, four gang related murders
occurred in Helen Keller Park,
located in South Central Los
Angeles.
In 2005 a handful of volunteers
from BAFTA LA began working with
the Los Angeles Parks and
Recreation Department to
transform a small building in Helen
Keller Park, in an area with no
theatre, library or museum in a 35
mile radius. With very limited
resources BAFTA LA members and
community activists were able to
create a somewhat makeshift 50
seat screening theatre to show
films free to the neighborhood.
Five years later, INNER CITY CINEMA
is a thriving program which
regularly provides free screenings
of contemporary and classic films
to over 200 people and brings
filmmakers to speak with the
families such as Antwone Fisher
and Malcolm David Kelley of
“Lost.”
.
Several months after the first
screenings, a gangland truce was
announced which is still in effect.
No gang violence has been
reported in the park since early
2005.
The success of the program has
expanded to Athens and Ted
Watkins Parks. With the support of
Hollywood Outdoor Movies, films
are able to be screened outside
in the parks allowing more kids
and families to attend.
BAFTA Los Angeles is working with
the City of Los Angeles to help
build a new community center
which will house a BAFTA LA
Screening Room. Warner Bros.
Pictures has made the first
donation to the new building and
will be collaborating on a new
sound and projection system.
COMMUNITY EDUCATION AND OUTREACH INNER CITY CINEMA
COMMUNITY EDUCATION AND OUTREACH
The success of the INNER CITY CINEMA program led to the launch
of the SUMMER SCREENING
PROGRAM, with plans to repeat in
2012, geared to bringing even more
neighborhoods together to enjoy
films.
Working with the Department of
Parks and Recreation, the Mayor’s
Office and Gang Reduction
Development, BAFTA Los Angeles
and Warner Bros. Pictures and Home
Video provided free screenings of
entertaining family films to over
3,500 people in 6 county parks and
24 city parks around Los Angeles
over nine weeks.
Ever since the free screenings began
at Helen Keller Park, BAFTA Los
Angeles has been hosting a HOLIDAY CHRISTMAS PARTY for the
neighborhood. What started with
200 people attending has grown into
an annual daylong event bringing
together up to 3,000.
Working with A Better LA and C.U.R.E.
the families are treated to a day filled
with real holiday spirit including
carnival games, rides, a BBQ and
Santa’s Playground.
Every child leaves with several age
appropriate gifts and this last year,
each child also got a new pair of
sneakers.
COMMUNITY EDUCATION AND OUTREACH SUMMER SCREENING PROGRAM & HOLIDAY PARTY
COMMUNITY EDUCATION AND OUTREACH
BAFTA Los Angeles has an
ongoing relationship with
GEORGE WASHINGTON PREPARATORY HIGH SCHOOL (aka Washington Prep) working
with Darryl McCane, Director of
the School’s Multimedia and
Filmmaking Academy and Dr.
Melanie Andrews, head of the
Drama Department.
Our members regularly go to the
school to speak with the
students making them more
aware of the many varied skills
involved in the film and
television industry and the
opportunities that might be
available to them.
The film and video students are
given hands-on experiences
and many of our members have
lent their time and talents to
helping the students work on
specific projects. In 2010,
Washington Prep students
submitted 12 films into the
student short film festival at
Raleigh Studios.
Where possible we also arrange to take
students out of the classroom for a
unique experience. BAFTA Los Angeles
Board Member James Knight has
spoken to the students about motion
capture and arranged for many of
them to view a screening of “Avatar,”
at Lightstorm and get a tour of the
facility.
BAFTA LA provides an annual
scholarship to Inner-City Filmmakers, a
non profit organization which provides
year round education and job
placement for diverse disadvantaged
youth.
COMMUNITY EDUCATION AND OUTREACH INDUSTRY MENTORING & INNER CITY SCHOLARSHIP
COMMUNITY EDUCATION AND OUTREACH
COMMUNITY EDUCATION AND OUTREACH THE SHAKESPEARE IN THE HOOD PROJECT
In 2010, Washington Prep
introduced the drama and film
students to the works of
Shakespeare by showing scenes
from “Romeo & Juliet.” BAFTA LA
actor members also came in and
worked with the students to enact
scenes from the play in what
turned out to be a powerful
experience for all. Washington
Prep is in a tough neighborhood
and for many students, the story
had tremendous emotional and
cultural relevance to their lives -
the street violence, gang warfare,
as well as the powerful love story.
During the Fall term, the teachers
continued working with the
students on Shakespeare. Out of
these classes and workshops,
came a plan for the students to
produce a live performance of
“Romeo & Juliet.”
Preparations for the production
started in January 2011 with the
launch of the SHAKESPEARE IN THE HOOD CLUB, an after school club
that allowed all students to
participate, not just those from
drama and film.
Dr. Andrews oversaw the production
of the play with BAFTA LA members
helping students on everything from
set design, acting, costumes and
more.
The live performance, in May 2011,
featured a modified one hour version
of the play. A Chorus was used to fill
in story line, which allowed more
students to participate in the
production.
The County made a 400 seat open
air theatre in Ladera Heights
available for the performance,
which will be open to the public.
In 2012, BAFTA LA plans to repeat the
Shakespeare program at
Washington Prep, this time producing
A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The
program is in need of funding for
sets, costumes, production
equipment and publicity materials.

COMMUNITY EDUCATION AND OUTREACH
The aim of the BAFTA Los Angeles
Scholarship Program is to help fund
British students who are enrolled in
Film and Television based college
programmes in the U.S.
Since 1992 BAFTA Los Angeles has
been providing three annual
scholarships to UCLA, USC and AFI.
All of our scholarship recipients
have gone on to work in the
entertainment industry. A few have
worked with such notable
producer/directors as Steven
Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis. In
2009 and 2010, BAFTA LA
scholarship recipient Sacha
Gervais won five major Best
Documentary Awards including the
Independent Spirit Awards and the
International Documentary
Association.
Through corporate and private
donations, the Academy has
targeted at least ten new
scholarships for 2011 and plans to
expand into at least two more
schools.
BAFTA LOS ANGELES SCHOLARSHIPS
And our program will expand with the
addition of a scholarship for a UK
student who is specifically interested in
working in television where we’ll bring
a UK student to the US for hands on
work experience.
COMMUNITY
Over the years some of our past
scholars have remained in touch with
each other. The Academy is creating
a social networking site for current
scholars, alumni and their friends in the
industry that allows them to share their
experiences and work.
After their graduation, all scholarship
students will be given a one year free
Associate membership in BAFTA Los
Angeles. They will be able to enjoy the

grow their connections in the industry,
alongside the BAFTA Los Angeles

meaningful legacy that the British
Academy creates and maintains.

every branch of the industry
including Ken Annakin, Michael
Apted, Claire Bloom, Michael
Caine, Anne V. Coates, Guy
