Page 2: Solid waste

Solid Waste useless and unwanted products in the solid state

derived from the activities of and discarded by society. It is produced either by - product of production processes or arise from the domestic or commercial sector when objects or materials are discarded after use.

Page 3: Solid waste

Solid waste is are further classified as:Biodegradable are those that can be decayed by bacteria and other organisms, while those that cannot undergo bacterial decay are considered Non Biodegradable.

Page 4: Solid waste

Biodegradable

Biodegradable materials can be decomposed by microorganisms such as bacteria, enzymes and fungi.

Non-Biodegradablean object that cannot be decomposed into organic and environmentally safe waste products. This is unlike biodegradable objects which can easily be decomposed by soil bacteria into organic and safe waste materials.

Three types of Solid Waste

House hold waste or Municipal Solid Waste

Industrial waste or Hazardous wasteHospital waste or Biomedical waste

Page 9: Solid waste

Municipal Solid wasteHouse hold waste that is normally termed as Municipal Solid Waste.-mostly consists of household waste, sanitation waste, waste from streets, demolition debris that arises during the construction and demolition of buildings and other construction activities.

Page 10: Solid waste

Hazardous WasteIndustrial waste which in majority of cases is termed as a Hazardous waste.

-is a waste that is quite dangerous as they consist of toxic substances that are of chemical nature. This type of waste is highly dangerous to human, plants, animals and the overall environment. As improper disposal of the industrial solid waste may lead to death, disease and sometimes an environmental damage that may continue for generations.

Corrosive - capable of chemically wearing substances away (corroding) or destroying them. For example, most acids are corrosive. They can eat through metal, burn human skin on contact, and give off vapors that burn the eyes. Acids found in batteries are corrosive.

Toxic - poisonous to people and other organisms. Toxic substances can cause illness-ranging from severe headaches to cancer-and even death if swallowed, and many also can be absorbed through the skin. Pesticides, weed killers, and many household cleaners are toxics.

Ignitable - capable of bursting into flames. Ignitable substances pose a fire hazard and irritate the skin, eyes, and lungs. They also may give off harmful vapors. Gasoline, paint, and furniture polish are ignitable substances.

Reactive - capable of exploding or releasing poisonous gas when mixed with another substance or chemical. For example, chlorine bleach and ammonia are reactive. When they come into contact with each other they produce a poisonous gas.

Biomedical WasteHospital waste or Biomedical waste that quiet infectious.

-This type of solid waste is most infectious and can spread diseases and other types of viral and bacterial infections among humans and animals if not managed properly in a scientific way. The hospital waste includes solid waste in the form of disposable syringes, bandages, cotton swabs, body fluids, human excreta, anatomical waste, bandages, expired medicines, and other types of chemical and biological waste. Hospital waste is equally hazardous and dangerous as in case of industrial waste if not disposed off or managed properly.

Open Dumps- are sites of garbage disposal, expose garbage to flies, rats and other vermin that then become carries diseases.Ocean Dumping- another wrong disposal has been done for several decades in the bottomless.

Landfills- where the waste is compacted and covered with soil before a new layer is dumped on.Incineration- is an alternative method of waste disposal, which reduce the volume of waste.Recycling- could reduce considerably the amount of garbage by reusing glass, plastics, aluminium, metals, scrap iron, and other materials. -this would reduce air, water and land pollution.
