THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ OCTOBER 28, 2018

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

More on Recent Books:

Literary Fiction and Related Works Catherine Lacey’s The Answers (Farrar, Straus &

Giroux, 2017) is a satire on love and marriage, including their religious aspects.

Alice McDermott’s The Ninth Hour (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 2017) is about a Brooklyn widow whose husband, an Irish immigrant lost his job and then took his life. Their daughter wishes to enter religious life, but doesn’t. The Christian life of self-sacrifice still prevails.

Mark Helprin’s Paris in the Present Time (Overlook Press, 2017) tells of a Parisian cellist who has recently been hammered by suffering but finds consolation in the music of the Baroque composer Couperin. At one point he invokes an instrument of that period: “The harpsichord is a very strange instrument. It plucks and stops, attacking its sonorousness at each note by refusing to let the note sustain and fade. In that sense, it refuses death—by jumping, as if from one ice floe to another, to a new note and a new life. It can sometimes be stilted, but if done right the chain of sound becomes as beautiful as the sparkling of stars.”

Neel Mukherjee, A State of Freedom (Norton, 2018) is partially set in now-abandoned Fatehpur Sikri, once the capital of the Mughal Empire.

Aaron Thier, The World Is a Narrow Bridge (Bloomsbury, 2018) is a modern take on Old Testament prophecy.

Christian Wiman’s Joy: 100 Poems (Yale, 2017) is an anthology mostly by modern poets.

John Banville’s Time Pieces (Knopf, 2018), a memoir by the Irish novelist, is filled with pleasing humor. He recalls a friend who compared his life to the census (“Broken down by age, sex and religion”); a Dublin pub frequented by writers, “where many a masterpiece was talked into thin air;” and an encounter with a sewer worker who startled him by popping out of a manhole, putting on a wild look and asking him, “Is the war over?” Banville says his epitaph could well read, “Should have lived more, written less.”

Albert Manguel’s Packing My Library (Yale, 2018) offers reflections by a cultivated essayist whose thoughts are always worth considering.

(continued above)

Popular Fiction

Tom Bouman’s Fateful Mornings (Norton, 2017) is a crime novel centering on “Henry Farrell,” the only policeman in rural Wild Thyme, Pennsylvania. Reflecting on his life at one point, he says that “Personally, I don’t know how I escaped bad habits, and by that I mean serious habits…. It is tempting to credit yourself as an iron man when you look around at other people and their troubles. I’d only say there’s more trouble in us than we know.”

William Broderick’s A Whispered Name (Overlook, 2017) is one of his “Father Anselm” mysteries, set in England. Fr. Anselm, a former lawyer, investigates the case of Private Joseph Flanagan, who was sentenced to death by a WW I military judge who later became Father Herbert. Was the sentence carried out, or not?

Bradford Morrow’s The Prague Sonata (Atlantic Monthly Press, 2017) tells of pianist and musicologist Meta Taverner’s search for the missing part of a classical music score that Otylie Bartos ova had divided into three to save it from the Nazis sixty years previously.

Biographies

Erica Wagner’s Chief Engineer (Bloomsbury, 2017) is about Washington Roebling, who succeeded his father, John Augustus Roebling, as chief engineer for building the Brooklyn Bridge.

Stephen Taylor’s Defiance: The Extraordinary Life of Lady Anne Barnard (Norton, 2017) tells of an 18th-19th-century woman who knew Samuel Johnson and married a man who became secretary to the British governor of a territory near the Cape of Good Hope.

John B. Boles’s Jefferson (Basic, 2017) insists that Jefferson, a great favorite of President Kennedy who has come under recent criticism for having slaves (and among them a mistress), should be judged by the standards of his time.

Ron Chernow’s Grant (Penguin Press, 2017) says that the often low-rated president, despite his battles with alcoholism, had more accomplishments than many have thought.

Jonathan Eig’s Ali: A Life (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2017) covers the great champ in exciting detail, including his classic bouts with Joe Frazier, who had developed a great animosity against Ali. Eig explains: “Frazier, the son of a one-armed sharecropper, did the hating because Ali belittled him as ‘ugly’ and ‘stupid,’ a sad-sack Uncle Tom. Ali, who had grown up in relative comfort in Louisville, thought he was

just selling tickets until Frazier said, ‘I’m gonna eat this [guy’s]heart right out of his chest.’”

Ingrid Rjust owland and Noah Charney’s The Collector of Lives (Norton, 2017) is about Giorgio Vasari, author of the famous collection of biographies of great artists that is filled with colorful details about them. For example, he described Michelangelo’s devoted dedication to his sculptures, telling how he attached a candle to his hat so he could work late into the night and slept in his clothes so he would not waste his time putting them on again the next day.

Lindsey Fitzharris’s The Butchering Art (Farrar, Strau & Giroux, 2017) is about 19th-century British doctor Joseph Lister, who led the way toward introducing antiseptic practices for hospitals and surgery. A highly regarded surgeon of the era said that, before Lister’s innovations, “there was one sponge to a ward. With this putrid article and a basin of once- clear water all the wounds in the ward were washed in turn twice a day. By this ritual any chance that a patient had of recovery was eliminated.” Lister’s reforms faced a great deal of initial opposition, including in the U.S., the last major nation to accept them.

Jennet Conant’s Man of the Hour (Simon & Schuster, 2017) pays tribute to her grandfather, James B. Connant, who was president of Harvard, director of WW II’s Defense Research Committee (which produced the atomic bomb) , U.S. High Commissioner for Germany, and an effective warrior in the Cold War.

Kenneth Whyte’s Hoover: An Extraordinary Life in Extraordinary Times (Knopf, 2017) covers the career of the president who was done in by the Great Depression. Before his election, he was a highly successful problem solver, rescuing thousands of stranded American tourists in England when WW I broke out, directing the feeding of starving Belgians after the Kaiser’s troops invaded their country, and leading the efforts to help victims of the great Mississippi River flood of 1927 (starting what eventually became FEMA).

Lewis E. Lehrman’s Lincoln and Churchill: Statesmen at War (Stackpole/Globe Pequot/Rowman and Littlefield, 2018) compares the two always-fascinating leaders.

Julian Jackson’s De Gaulle (Harvard, 2018) has been praised as the best English biography of the great French leader, who was also a strongly committed Catholic.

HAPPY 100TH BIRTHDAY, FR. CODA ! A former parochial vicar of Saint Joseph Church, Fr. Joe Coda, will be turning 100 years old on November 3! Fr. Coda came to Saint Joseph in 1962 and stayed with us for

ten years. He returned to Saint Joseph after his retirement and frequently celebrated weekend Masses here. Reverend Joseph F. Coda was born in Lodi, NJ in 1918, the second of seven children. He graduated from St. Peter's Prep in Jersey City and was a parishioner at Ss. Peter and Paul in Hoboken as a child. HE attended Seton Hall University and served three years in the U.S. Army in WWII, earning a Bronze Star. He served as assistant to the Army chaplains, and saw combat firsthand with General Patton's Third Army, 26th Division, in the Battle of the Bulge as well as in Luxembourg, Austria, Germany, France and Czechoslovakia. After the war, Fr. Coda settled back in the states in 1946 and attended the Manhattan School of Music and The Juilliard School. He considered a career in music, but ultimately heard a call to the Priesthood and was ordained in 1963 at the age of 44. He served at St. Joseph Parish in New Milford as Parochial Vicar for 10 years. He shared his gift of singing regularly throughout his time here, and fostered a deep friendship with the late beloved William Ryan, former music director of St. Joseph's Parish. Fr. Coda went on to serve as parochial vicar at St. Theresa in Kenilworth before retiring in 1988. He now lives at St. John Vianney Residence (60 Home Avenue, Apt. 31, Rutherford, NJ 07070) along with 19 other retired priests. He counts among his blessings his many friends and is cherished by his large family, which includes 37 nieces and nephews and a growing number of great-great nieces and nephews. He celebrated numerous weddings and Christenings with his family. This past April he co-celebrated the Baptism of his great-great nephew, Theodore Armstrong, son of great-niece Sara Armstrong, who serves as guest cantor here at Saint Joseph Parish on occasion. (With thanks to Sara Armstrong and The Catholic Advocate)

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “And Jesus said to him, ‘Go your way; your faith has made you well.’ And immediately he received his sight and followed him on the way. (Mark 10:52) Faith is believing in something even though you may not be able to see it. Many people think that miracles don’t happen anymore. But, if you focus on the positive, not the negative, focus on your blessings instead of your hardships. Miracles will seem common and you will see God’s active presence in your daily life.
