WE’RE SO CLOSE! Many thanks to the 275 parishioners who have already pledged $58,773 to the Archdiocesan Annual Appeal. We are only about $5,000 away from our parish goal of $64,000. If we exceed our goal, Saint Joseph Parish will also directly benefit for your generosity. It is not too late to pledge! Please make out your check to “AAA” and drop it at the rectory or in the collection basket. Thank you!

JOIN OUR CHOIR! Do you love to sing? Would you like to use your voice to give praise and glory to God? It’s easy! Become part of our adult choir. You don’t need to be able to read music. Our choir rehearses every Thursday evening (we begin this Thursday, September 4 at 7 pm) and sings at the 10:30 am Sunday Mass in the upper church, in our annual Afternoon of Christmas Joy concert and at community events as well. Stop by after Mass and speak to our Music Director Monroe Quinn or email him at

[email protected] As St. Augustine has said, “How deeply was I moved by the voices of your sweet singing Church! Those voices flowed into my ears and the truth was distilled into my heart … .” Come join us!

TWENTY SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, AUGUST 31, 2014

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

EXAMINATION OF CONSCIENCE FOR WORKERS

Do I see my work as a gift from God? How is this reflected in my attitude at work?

Do I see my work as a vocation? Do I promote a culture of life

through my work? Do I live a divided life, where I separate the Gospel

principles from my work? Do I seek the sacraments regularly and with

attention to how they support and inform my work practices?

Am I sharing my spiritual life/understanding of work with others in my work life?

Am I taking seriously, the dignity of the person in my work, as an employee? Am I being just in my attentiveness to my personal performance? Am I promoting integral human development while ensuring that the company I work for is efficient?

PARISH OFFICE CLOSED FOR LABOR DAY —SEPTEMBER 1

The Parish Office/Rectory will be closed this Monday, September 1. Regular office hours will resume this week. (Please see bottom of bulletin cover for details.)

LABOR DAY BLESSINGS

“Whatever you do, do from the heart, as for the Lord and not for others… .” Colossians 3:23

“No work is insignificant. All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence.” Martin Luther King, Jr.

Not long into his papacy, one of the Church’s longest, St. John Paul II wrote an encyclical that is very appropriate to a Labor Day weekend.

It’s title, Laborem Exercens, refers to doing hard work diligently. After acknowledging that work is often difficult, the Pope pointed out that, nonetheless

work is a good thing for man, … not only in the sense that it is useful or something to enjoy; [but] also … as being something worthy, … that corresponds to man’s dignity, that expresses this dignity and increases it. If one wishes to define more clearly the ethical meaning of work, it is this truth that one must particularly keep in mind. Work is a good thing for man — a good thing for his humanity — because through work man not only transforms nature, adapting it to his own needs, but he also achieves fulfillment as a human being and indeed, in a sense, becomes “more a human being.”

He adds that work is “a foundation for the formation of family life,” since it makes it possible for parents to found a family, by enabling its material support, and to educate their children. And the contribution of work also extends to the wider society beyond the home. Calling attention to Vatican Council II’s document The Church in the Modern World, St. John Paul reminded us that our work is meant to harmonize with God’s will that man, created in God’s image

received a mandate to subject to himself the earth and all that it contains, and to govern the world with justice and holiness; a mandate to relate himself and the totality of things to him who was to be acknowledged as the Lord and Creator of all. Thus, by the subjection of all things to man, the name of God would be “wonderful in all the earth.”

We should see even our most ordinary everyday work as a participation in God’s plans for loving humanity.

For, while providing the substance of life for themselves and their families, men and women are performing their activities in a way which appropriately benefits society. They can justly consider that by their labor they are unfolding the Creator’s work, consulting the advantages of their brothers and sisters, and contributing by their personal industry to the realization in history of the divine plan.

SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ

Sometimes it's hard to give of your time, or your toys, or even to share your friends. Sometimes you want to be selfish and keep everything for yourself. This is not what Jesus did. He kept sharing God's love all the time. Jesus wants us to share like he

did, to give of ourselves even when we want to be selfish.
