WELCOME TO OUR NEW YOUTH MUSIC MINISTER—DAN FERRARI Saint Joseph Youth Ministry welcomed our new Youth Music Minister, Dan Ferrari, at the July Teen Mass last Sunday. Dan is an accomplished singer/songwriter and worship leader, as well as a friend of our own Fr. Anthony. We are indeed blessed to have Dan share his musical talent with those who attend our Teen Masses (all ages are invited) and to walk our journey of faith with us. Dan is from Little Falls, NJ. He experienced a profound "re-conversion" in his faith life around 2009 which took his mainstream

music career on a totally different path. He began to play at St. Paul Inside the Walls in Madison, NJ where he is still involved today as co-leader of their young adult ministry. Dan has been expressing his faith and sharing his journey with the Lord through his music and songwriting ever since. (Dan Ferrari is the only musician who has shared the stage with both Pope Francis and Lady Gaga—not at the same time!) Dan has released two faith-based albums in the last three years – available on iTunes and Spotify. He was featured on Sirius XM Radio’s the Catholic Channel in June 2020. Dan travels to various parishes, retreats, youth and young adult ministries singing, speaking and leading worship in an effort to spread the joy of Christianity and the excitement of knowing Jesus.

Dan is married to his beautiful wife of almost 3 years, Caitlin, whom he met through the young adult ministry they’re both involved in. They are excited to welcome their first child in December 2020. Dan is grateful to God for the opportunity to be sharing his faith, music and story here with the teens and parishioners of Saint Joseph.

FROM THE DESK OF FR. JOHN

SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ JULY 19, 2020

Fr. John Z. Radwan, parochial vicar of Saint Joseph Church, is our guest columnist this week.

Monsignor Hubba’s column, “From the Pastor’s Desk,” will return August 16.

On Friday, July 24, we will celebrate the memorial of a powerful saint, Saint Sharbel, who is not well known in our Catholic Latin Rite Church. Saint Sharbel’s memorial was first inserted into the liturgical calendar in the United States in 2004. Prior to that, he was known primarily among the Christians in Lebanon where the dominant form of Catholicism is the Maronite Rite Catholic Church. There are millions of other Catholics in the world—full members of the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church—who worship using an Eastern, or Middle Eastern, liturgy. The Maronite liturgy, rituals, church customs and forms or prayer can trace their origins to ancient times. Saint Sharbel, baptized as Youssef (Arabic for Joseph), was one of five children born into a poor family from a remote village in the hills of Lebanon. They were devout Maronite Catholics whose relatives already included priests and monks. Youssef was only three when his father died. From very early on, young Youssef displayed a tender devotion to the Virgin Mary and a natural disposition toward prayer. In his early twenties, he left the family home to enter a monastery. In due time, he made his religious profession and took the name Sharbel after a second-century martyr from Antioch, a city not far from Lebanon. He then studied, was ordained a priest in 1859, and returned to his monastery to live as a strictly observant monk practicing austere mortifications. In 1875, he was granted the privilege to live as a hermit in a chapel, under his monastery’s supervision and care. And there he stayed—alone, isolated, mortified, poor, reflective and silent—for the next twenty-three years, willingly separating himself from the world so he could more easily attach himself to Christ. He died of a stroke at the age of seventy. Saint Sharbel lived the model life of an Eastern hermit-monk in the ancient tradition of Saint Anthony of the Desert. His reputation for holiness spread among the local people, who sought him to receive a

blessing and to be remembered in his prayers. After his life, more miracles were attributed to his intercession. When his body was exhumed after many decades of death, it was found to be incorrupt. Father Sharbel was never photographed during his lifetime, and only a few monks ever saw him after he entered the monastery. But in May of 1950, some Maronite monks visited Fr. Sharbel’s grave on his birthday and took a photo. When the film

was developed, a mysterious hooded figure with a white beard appeared among them in the photograph. It was Sharbel. All images of the hermit Sharbel are based on this photo. Saint Sharbel was beatified by Pope Paul VI in 1965 at a Mass at the conclusion of the Second Vatican Council. And in 1977, he became the first Eastern Christian saint to be canonized in modern times. Although Fr. Youssef never traveled far from the Lebanese hermitage where he lived, his influence has spread widely in Eastern Christianity and is now spreading in our Latin Western world of Christianity. Saint Sharbel, pray for us. May your serene example of prayer and fasting be an inspiration for all who do battle in their spiritual deserts—for all who struggle with sin and the temptations of the world and the flesh. Help us to follow your unique path of holiness.

Fr. John Radwan

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a man who sowed good seed in his field…He who sows good seed is the Son of Man, the field is the world, the good seed the children of the kingdom.” - Matthew 13:24, 37-38 As children of God, we are all “good seeds”. We are blessed by God with the potential to accomplish much good in the world. We fulfill God’s plan when we spend time in prayer every day, use our skills to help others and share our financial gifts to help build God’s kingdom on earth. Through our example of gratitude and generosity we sow “good seeds” on earth and ultimately help each other get to Heaven!
