STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.” —1 JOHN 4:15

How strong is your faith? When you have an opportunity to defend your faith or clarify a question about your faith, do you do it? Or, do you remain silent so that others don’t think you are weird? Pray for the courage to be strong in your faith and share your witness with others.

BREAD AND WINE INTENTIONS The bread and wine for the

Week of May 17, 2015 is offered in loving memory of

SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER ~ MAY 17, 2015

CATECHISTS NEEDED “A catechist , then, is a Christian who is mindful of God, who is guided by the memory of God in his or her entire life and who is able to awaken that memory in the hearts of others.”

—POPE FRANCIS

Is that you? Please consider becoming one of the special volunteers who make it possible for Saint Joseph Parish to pass on the faith to our next generation. If you’d like to volunteer or just want more information, please contact Deacon George Montalvo at 201-261-1144 or at [email protected]

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK The learned cultural critic and writer Henry Adams, a descendant of the famous family that

gave our nation two of its earliest presidents, was a man of ironic and skeptical inclinations who deeply distrusted the gross materialism he saw so strongly present in American life at the close of the 19th Century. Contrasting its mighty industrial machinery with power of the spiritual order, Adams concluded that

All the steam in the world could not, like the Virgin, build Chartres.

Mary is our foremost example of how the grace of her son can so captivatingly transform life. While she is the pinnacle of Christian sainthood, she also belongs to all of humanity. Rhonda Chervin, a professor of philosophy and one of America’s most talented Catholic authors, became a Consecrated Widow of the Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity after the death of her husband. Marveling at the influence Mary has had even beyond our religion, she has written that

Even non-Catholics are stunned by you. The famous psychologist Carl Jung responded to the proclamation of the dogma of your assumption by insisting that this was the most important event of the 20th Century! In terms of his own symbolic categories, he thought that you were the archetype of the truly feminine: motherly, valiant, and soaring above the evils of our benighted era of masculine power gone berserk. You bring, instead, beauty, comfort, hope.

Ever since the awesome moment when Jesus, from the cross of his saving death, commended Mary to the care of St. John and proclaimed her as John’s mother, and, implicitly, ours as well, Catholics have confidently approached her through prayer and have humbly sought to imitate her goodness. In Rhonda Chervin’s words:

In personal rather than in cosmic terms we chant your mysteries on the rosary in humble supplication that our own lives might be redeemed: the knots of our being untangled; our loved ones brought to the feet of their savior; our dead hidden in the heart of your Son.

During this Sunday’s 9:00 am Mass, the parish’s new first communicants will crown our statue of the Mother of God. This past Saturday, members of the Legion of Mary did so in Mary’s Chapel. And on Monday at 2:00 pm students of Saint Joseph School will lead a third crowning devotion in the main church. It may be many years since there has been a triple crown in the world of horse racing, but we have a far more important one here every May in the form of our grateful rejoicing in the benefits that come our way because of Our Lady.

PILGRIMAGE TO SPAIN & PORTUGAL —OCTOBER 12-21

Join Fr. Roy Regaspi on a 10-day pilgrimage to Portugal and Spain to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the birth of St. Teresa of Avila. In addition to visiting the medieval city of Avila, the

church where St. Teresa had frequent visions and the convent that contains her relics, pilgrims will also spend time at Fatima and the Shrine of Our Lady where three local shepherd children saw the Virgin Mary. As Fr. Roy tells us: “Our pilgrimage through Portugal and Spain offers an invitation to look at Faith in Christ through the eyes of mystics and great saints. St. Teresa’s intimate encounters with God offer a challenge to everyone—to see with the eyes of faith and then act courageously. The experience at Fatima and beyond will offer moments of healing in mind, body and spirit.” Departing from Newark, the pilgrimage will travel from Lisbon to Santarem and Fatima (and the Shrine of Fatima), to Alba de Tormes (the burial place of St. Teresa), to Salamanca (“the Golden City”) and Avila, then to Madrid (and the famous Prado Museum), El Escorial (built as King Philip I’s residence, which now serves as a monastery, royal palace, museum and school), and ending at Toledo (the ancient capital that so inspired the famous artist El Greco). For more information, see flyers in the church literature racks or contact Tour Director Buddy S. Deauna at 201-501-8388 or by email at [email protected]
