A SPECIAL WALKING PILGRIMAGE

Fr. John invites our parishioners to join our parish group and the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal for an annual walking

pilgrimage which begins on Thursday, August 8 and ends on Sunday, Aug 11. Pilgrims start waking from Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Great Meadow, NJ to Doylestown National Shrine of Our Lady, PA. Walking pilgrimages offer us the opportunity to grow in our faith, to be renewed on our spiritual journey with God with love in our minds, hearts and souls. The Franciscan Friars lead the group and provide a rich spiritual program for every day. There will be many opportunities for spiritual talk, counseling, reflection and fellowship with other pilgrims. Children are very welcome if accompanied by a parent or guardian.

SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ JULY 28, 2019

FROM THE DESK OF FATHER ANTHONY

Reflecting back on how as a kid, summers seemed to last

“forever,” I am amazed now as an adult, how summer seems to fade so quickly leaving me asking “Where did the time go?” While we have now passed the halfway point of our summer, I do know where the time has gone here in our parish. Renovations are well underway as our parish teens

have been working hard to prepare for our new Youth Center unveiling and the relaunching of our

Saint Joseph Youth Ministry with an official kickoff

this September. Our teens have been busy clearing out the clutter on the first floor of the Curry House, which is now the home of our new parish Youth Center, and where they have also spent much of their summertime helping with repairs, painting and taking the lead in making the space all their own. (See photos on flyer insert!)

Saint Paul once said, writing to the early Church community in Ephesus, “then we will no longer be immature like children…instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church.” Ephesians 4:14a,15b These words came to mind as I thought about and prayed over all the work that the teens have accomplished this summer on their new Youth Center for the relaunch of the Saint Joseph Youth Ministry. The commitment that our teens have given to this project demonstrates that they truly understand the message that Saint Paul had for his fellow Christian community, namely, that we become more like Jesus Christ, as we strive to grow spiritually in our faith journey. As our teens journey to adulthood, they are also growing spiritually in the ways of Jesus Christ. They recognize that a youth center is not just a physical place to meet and hang out; young people need a place to meet others who can lift them up, encourage them, and challenge them in all the right ways. Our teens have proved that they understand that all the sweat and hard work they have been putting into our new Youth Center is the way they have grown this summer. They are already becoming youth leaders to their peers by preparing a place where all of our youth and teenagers can share the good news of Jesus among themselves and thereby help them grow in faith and discipleship in their lives.

Relaunching our Saint Joseph Youth Ministry reaffirms our commitment as a parish family to providing a

(continued above)

loving and faith-filled environment for all middle school kids and teenagers. We provide a place for our youth to grow in Christ, empower them to ignite their faith, build upon our Christian values, and establish themselves as valued members of our parish.

Through the work and effort of our Youth Minister and our Youth Leaders, Saint Joseph

Youth Ministry will offer opportunities for our ministry youth and teens to gather on specific nights for organized activities, food, and sharing, along with chances for great conversations with entertaining, educational and spiritual guest speakers. Our youth and teens will also work to serve others in the name of God. Prior to all meetings and group meals, members will offer prayers and this ministry will promote faith by encouraging all to attend and experience the Word of God and the Eucharist as a family at our monthly Mass. Our ministry will also provide each member with the chance to participate in retreats in order to explore their faith in a deeper and more meaningful way. With the guidance of our adult team, youth leaders will be empowered to plan and help lead our meetings, social activities, and service projects, demonstrating their love and faith in God while creating and enhancing relationships with God and their peers.

IGNITE is our new teen group. We invite all teens in

grades 9-12 for weekly meetings and monthly events, such as trips and volunteer opportunities within and outside our community. Meetings take place on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Tuesdays of every month at 7:30 pm at the Youth Center (Curry House 1st Floor). Monthly recreational, spiritual and social activities and events will be posted in the bulletin and on our website. Teens are encouraged to come by and hang out, play games, serve, grow in faith, and become Youth Leaders within the group and thereby leaders within the church community.

BE THE LIGHT is our new pre-teen youth group.

We invite all 7th and 8th graders to join us on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:30 pm in the Youth Center. Come gather in fun and friendship, as you grow in our church community.

Our TEEN MASS is typically on the first Sunday of

every month at 6:00 pm. All are welcome to celebrate the Mass ministered by our teens who are invited to share their talents – it is a great opportunity to strengthen their faith and become an active member serving our parish community. (continued on next page)

We will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ.

Our relaunched Saint Joseph Youth Ministry mission statement promises to empower teens to ignite their faith and build upon our Christian values. Our parish is blessed by our teens in all they have accomplished thus far. They are growing in Christ in leading the way for this vital ministry. I am also grateful for our parents who have given their teens a taste of this mission by encouraging them to come out and help in the midst of summertime and in all the busyness of family life. Your commitment and the support by our parish community truly proves that our teens are loved, valued and a vital part of our parish and the Christian community. Peace,

Fr. Anthony If you would like more information, feel free to email the Youth Minister, Ellen Solinas, at [email protected] or our Youth Ministry Spiritual Director, Fr. Anthony, at [email protected]

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “Ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” (Luke 11:9)

Jesus assures us that if we ask, God will take care of what we need. The problem is that our culture often confuses what we really need with what we simply want. Many people need very little. However, we usually want so much more. A good steward only asks God for what he needs.

Dear Friends in Christ, Madonna Cemetery (located at 2070 Hoetley’s Lane, Fort Lee, NJ), has built an addition to our existing mausoleum, the first

community mausoleum constructed in the Archdiocese of Newark and which has served the needs of our local community for over forty years. The new expansion is called the “All Saints” section. There are private and semi-private areas in the mausoleum addition and there are options for both single and double internment.
