Club Bulletin - Issue 22 Monday 3 February 2014 Hi all What a week to be away from Kalgoorlie-Boulder! Record rain! I can only imagine the sights with all the deluge of water. I saw quite a few photos on Facebook and in the paper. Hopefully, the humidity isn't causing too much grief for all. I always seem to be out of Kalgoorlie when 'exciting' events occur. Thank you to all members who assisted in any way with arranging our requirements for the Great Aussie Breakfast . To this, members who assisted on the day Ross, Lloyd, Sue, Anne, Danny, Cherie and Lin a huge thank you. By all reports it was very busy with well over 1,000 breakfasts served. The count of the donations saw $1,871.35 being collected. So with the $1500 from Council it will see over $3,371 go into the joint clubs’ account. On Monday night we will have a debrief for feedback from those who assisted prior to the debrief at Council. Monday night we will be inducting Danny Vincent into the club. What a great way to start of 2014 for a new member. Our next event is on Saturday 22 February. Explore the Goldfields Community will be a wonderful opportunity to promote Rotary International, to new residents to our community, with the Boulder and Hannans Clubs, as a joint effort. Cherie is coordinating this event so please let her know if you are able to assist on the day. On 24 February, we have invited the Boulder and Hannans clubs to join us for Rotary's 'The Worlds Greatest Meal to Help End Polio'. This will be being held at Rydges around the pool. Cost will be $40 head. Drinks will be available from the pool bar. Partners and families are most welcome. Please encourage friends to come along as well so we can raise some funds to assist to eliminate Polio. Following on, Saturday 22 March 'Miles for Smiles' riders will be in Kalgoorlie for the night. This again will be an opportunity for the three clubs to get together to raise some funds to support Interplast . Anne will be coordinating this event with the three clubs and motorcycle clubs. It is hoped to be able to get some together to ride into Kalgoorlie with them. The Kalgoorlie Miner has been alerted and will be contacting Anne closer to the date to do a story. There is so much more, but this is enough for today. Enjoy the rest of your week while you Engage Rotary, Change Lives. FROM PRESIDENT ESTHER ... Club Bulletin - Issue 22 Monday 3 February 2014

Hi all

What a week to be away from Kalgoorlie-Boulder!

Record rain! I can only imagine the sights with all the deluge of water. I saw quite a few photos on Facebook and in the paper. Hopefully, the humidity isn't causing too much grief for all. I always seem to be out of Kalgoorlie when 'exciting' events occur.

Thank you to all members who assisted in any way with arranging our requirements for the Great Aussie Breakfast.

Explore the Goldfields Community will be a wonderful opportunity to promote Rotary International, to new residents to our

community, with the Boulder and Hannans Clubs, as a joint effort.

This again will be an opportunity for the three clubs to get together to raise some funds to support Interplast.

Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie

The month of February is very special in the Rotary calendar since it is designated World Understanding Month.

The month also includes the anniversary of the first meeting of Rotary held on February 23, 1905, now designated World Understanding and Peace Day.

World Understanding Month is a chance for every club to pause, plan and promote the Fourth Avenue of Service - Rotary’s continued quest for goodwill, peace and understanding among people of the world.

Many Rotary clubs and their representatives are already participating in activities that promote world understanding through humanitarian service in support of a variety of international projects.

Consider what our club can do to promote more World Understanding in our Rotary World. Here are some examples:

Support the hosting of a Group Study Exchange participant.

Participate in the Youth Exchange Program.

Seek out and support international projects through our district’s matching grant program?

Have you accessed the bank of inspiration video programs available to you through links on our district web site?

“Doing Good in the World” is a great video to watch. Donations to The Rotary Foundation make it possible for Rotary clubs to tackle some of the world’s most pressing needs. See how your gift to the Foundation provided clean water to a village in Peru, promoted peace to displaced young people in Australia, brought prenatal care to a remote area of Haiti, helped exploited workers in India, rebuilt a flood-ravaged school in the United States, and nurtured a family of orphans in Uganda.

This is the month to expand the club’s “World Understanding” as a way to embrace the broad mission of Rotary with “Peace Through Service.”

Great Aussie Breakfast This week’s Bulletin is being prepared in a motel in Perth, unfortunately the photographs from the Great Aussie Breakfast are on a camera in Kalgoorlie!

Photos from this brilliant event will be included in the next Bulletin.

Quickly though, it was a great event with members from all clubs working very well together to feed the hungry masses!

The very long queue didn’t seem to have an end for a very long time, but everyone was willing to wait their turn and make their donation.

MEETING ROSTER 3 February Ed Brennan 10 February Stephen Harper

17 February James Mercer-King 24 February LinMacQueen-Henderson

Please be at the Tower by 5.50pm at the latest to set up the meeting

to be ready for members and guests arriving at 6pm.

There is a guide on the cupboard door to assist you with set up.

If you can’t attend on your rostered evening, please make arrangements to swap with

another member.

Hello Kalgoorlie Rotarians. My name is Danny Vincent. I've met some of you already at Monday's meetings.

I'm the Officer in Charge of Kalgoorlie Police and in late 2013 I was approached by Esther and asked if I would like to attend a Kalgoorlie Rotary Meeting. I knew nothing about Rotary although in the thirteen years I've worked in regional W.A; I had seen the Rotary signs in the country towns I've worked in and visited. I had just never taken the time to find out what Rotary was about. It took someone like Esther to grab me by the ear and drag me along to a meeting (only joking Esther - sort of!).

Community engagement is an important part of my work and it was very obvious from my first Rotary meeting that community involvement and support is a very important part of Rotary.

I look forward to meeting more Kalgoorlie Rotarians and being a part of your worthy group.

Dear Members

The Hills bush fires and the loss of so many homes has left many people in need of help.

Rotary is best placed to help those in need over the medium term and not as a first responder, a task undertaken by government with their cash handouts.

Those effected by the bushfires will take 1-2 years minimum to recover and Rotary in conjunction with the local authorities can be there to assist those in particular need .

Rotary D9455, in which the fires occurred, has set up a Rotary Australia Benevolent Society Project which offers tax deductibility for all donations over $2.00.

Please consider donating to this fund to help families in the area effected by the fires.

Donations can be made by your club, Rotarians or members of the public.

PDG Ron Geary current Chair of RAWCS Wester Region has organised a fund through RABS (Rotary Australia Benevolent Society) the project number is 39-2013-14 and is available on the RAWCS website.

Donations can be made to the fund at:

https://donations.rawcs.com.au/Default.aspx?ProjectID=742&ReturnTo=3

The fund will be managed by the Rotary Club of Mundaring with the help of both Rotary Districts.

Rotarians will know where their money goes to as the fund is administered by Rotary.

Regards Erwin Biemel

District Governor D9465 2013-14

Welcome to the 4th Update on progress with the District 9465 Conference to be held in

Mandurah - March 21 to 23

As begun in Update No. 2, this Update contains more information on the development of the conference program and its themes and objects of making it an informative, stimulating and enjoyable experience for you and your partners.

In this issue, consistent with our RI theme for the 2013-14 year of “Engage Rotary, Change lives” and the Conference objectives, short articles are included on the activities and background of four of our key presenters and how their contributions are relevant and inspirational for Rotary in and beyond District 9465 now and into the future. These include features on:

• A pommie photographer who has become the lynchpin of ShelterBox Australia

• A local kid of Indian parents who became a plastic surgeon and an active participant in Rotary’s Interplast Progam; and

• A young lady with some approaches to improve public’s awareness and appreciation of Rotary’s contributions to local, national and international communities.

Extra Fun at the Conference

A Fun Challenge for Clubs to Support Rotary Foundation.

As part of the fun at Conference, DG Erwin invites Clubs to enter the “Fish for Foundation Challenge”.

He is a very keen, if somewhat under-achieving Trout fisherman!!

Clubs are invited to create and decorate fish for display in the Conference Showcase. The entrance fee is $50 and all proceeds will be donated to Foundation. Donations in lieu of fish entries will also be kindly accepted.

Winners will be selected by asking all delegates to vote for the “Peoples’ Choice Award” and there will also be a District Governor’s Award, selected, of course by DG Erwin.

Examples for the fish sculptures could be: School of Fish (for Literacy); Fish out of Water (for Water and Sanitation), or Fish Market (for Economic and Community Development).
