Thank you to members Ross, Cherie, Ken and Charmaine who joined me at the Rotary Foundation Grants Qualifying Seminar on Sunday. This has now qualified the club to be able to apply for Foundation Grants for 2015-16 Rotary Year. Ken will be giving members an overview of Foundation Grants at our meeting next week.

The Club has been asked to assist an elderly gentleman who is not in good health to clean up his yard. His family have made the home so he is able to remain at home and not in residential care. Amongst other things they have installed a ramp to his outside ablution facility.

We have been asked if we can assist to clean up his yard to ensure it is safe for him and there would be no danger of him falling over bits and pieces lying around the yard. Bill and his late wife have made a considerable contribution to our Community over many

years; so our assistance is a small way of saying thank you. Bill's daughter and son-in-law are his primary care givers and provide his meals daily. They live over the road from Bill. The clean up will involve 2-3 hours this Sunday (23 November) morning. So hoping to see a number of members on hand to assist.

What a Vocational visit we had this week! I don't think I've ever heard so many questions being asked of any guest speaker in my 21 years as a Rotarian. There were certainly some misconceptions put to rest and questions we have all had were answered by the well informed staff of the Kalgoorlie Cemetery.

In fact, we were all questioned out and when it came time to ask questions over dinner there were none left to ask. Gaye, Helen, Gerald and Felix were wonderful hosts.

Wednesday next week is the lighting of the Christmas

From President Esther ...

Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie meets at the Tower Hotel on Mondays at 6.00pm for 6.30pm. Visitors welcome!

tree. We participated by holding a chocolate wheel last year. It was a great fun filled night that also saw our fundraising coffers topped up.

Don't forget to bring in your Foundation Money Boxes for counting for Foundation Month. There are more boxes in the club cupboard if you need more.

We are also seeking contributions from members, in lieu of Secret Santa gifts to make a donation to St Jude's school in Tanzania to assist fund a teacher and student

for a year. As we have mentioned the Club will top up the member donations to make $1000.

Enjoy the rest of your week as you Light up Rotary.

From President Esther ...

This week’s Vocational Visit to the Kalgoorlie Cemetery was fascinating! We were joined by members of the Hannans Rotary Club and initially met in the Chapel to hear Gaye, Helen, Gerald and Felix speak about the Cemetery and Crematorium. We were then shown around the Crematorium and Gerald gave a very detailed description of how it all works. This was followed by the viewing of a freshly dug grave (for our benefit, not for immediate use) and a stroll through the Cemetery and a look at the, yet to be finished, Children’s Area. Although this was empty it was still quite moving.

Above left: Listening to Gaye in the Chapel.

Above right: Some of the artwork on the Chapel walls.

Right: The artwork for the Children’s area.

Note: Photographs were not permitted to be taken in the Crematorium.

World Toilet Day! November 19, 2014

Why celebrate toilets? UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in his Message for the World Toilet Day: "We have a moral imperative to end open defecation and a duty to ensure women and girls are not at risk of assault and rape, simply because they lack a sanitation facility." It is hard to imagine that 2.5 billion people do not have access to proper sanitation. And the impact of that lack of access is severe: disease, pollution, vulnerability to assault, girls missing school time... the list goes on. Sanitation may not be sexy, but it matters! Rain Water Harvesting

Thanks to Wasrag supporter Lloyd Gardner for letting us know the Virgin Islands Water Resources Institute conducts research on rainwater harvesting systems, relevant to Rotary Club and District projects in many countries. The reports are available in digital form here. As defined by Wikipedia, "rainwater harvesting is the accumulation and deposition of rainwater for reuse on-site, rather than allowing it to runoff. Uses include water for garden, water for livestock, water for irrigation, water for domestic use with proper treatment, and indoor heating for houses etc." For additional information see Wasrag Guidelines for Sustainable water projects, page 47. UPGRo: Design Roads for Water Harvesting and Groundwater Recharge

UPGRo is an NGO working to unlock the potential of groundwater for the poor. They recently posted an article on building roads in a way that works with nature rather than against it. Over the last year, their UPGro Catalyst project has been researching how roads can be used for rainwater harvesting on a landscape scale to recharge aquifers and ponds for later use in the dry seasons. Join the Debate: Is Public Financing a Dirty Word?

Following this year's Stockholm Water Conference, IRC's Patrick Moriarty challenges the idea that sustainability can be obtained without public financing support. Arguing that we KNOW roughly 30% of projects fail within a few years, we must seek other approaches. For example, DGIS now requires a sustainability clause in its grants making recipients responsible for 10 years of maintenance. Does this work? Check out this lively debate on the IRC blog. WASH in SCHOOLS theme at WWS7 - Sao Paulo

Promoting improved access to water, sanitation and hygiene education for schools makes so much sense. Teach children good habits and they share them at home and in the community. Build capacity in teachers to continue teaching students for years. Nurture a sense of shared responsibility to maintain systems, and model success. Join Rotarians from around the world at Wasrag's World Water Summit 7, immediately before the international convention in Sao Paulo June 2015! Registration opens soon. What is Wasrag?

The Water & Sanitation Rotarian Action group was formed in 2007 as a group of Rotarians, recognized by Rotary International, focused on water & sanitation work.

Rotarians are uniquely qualified to deliver sustainable solutions. They understand the culture and values of the local communities to which they belong. They are attuned to political considerations and can pinpoint problems before they become hurdles.

The world is discovering that effective programs take 3 to 5 years to be sustainable – local community engagement and appropriate technologies are keys to success. Solutions need to consider complex realities: geography, geology, climate, local culture for example. Ensuring a project is based on best practices isn’t easy, requiring skills often not readily available to Rotary Clubs.

Wasrag was created to provide the know-how, consistency and credibility essential to success over the long term. This has come together in a program called “Start with Water”.

Is it the TRUTH?

Is it FAIR to all concerned?
