A reminder to members that there is no Rotary this Monday night. We will be Joining the Rotary Club of Boulder and the Rotary Club of Hannans on Tuesday night for a joint meeting with District Governor Brian Eddy and his wife Pam. Pam has selected ROMAC as the DG's Partner’s project and is conducting a raffle to support her choice. She will introduce the raffle during the meeting and it would be wonderful if members could support the cause and purchase a ticket.

A reminder to Board members of the Business meeting with DG Brian at Rydges, 7am Wednesday morning.

It was very pleasing that the Club was able to present a cheque to the President of the Goldfields Brass Band on Monday night to enable them to purchase a new printer and computer so they can carry out their wonderful work in our Community. There is

rarely a Community event that does not have the Goldfields Brass Band playing. Three of their members have been with the Band since it was first formed over 50 years ago.

We were light on numbers Monday night, a legacy of the dreaded flu bug that is invading the City at the moment. It's not very pleasant. You think you are over it and it comes back with a vengeance. So look after yourselves everyone.

Our Guest Speaker calendar is filling fast with a number of interesting speakers for us all to enjoy.

August is membership month in our Rotary world

There are many ways to join in the celebration, but here are a few activities to get you started:

Say it loud, say it proud! Let everyone in

your social network know that you are a proud member by changing your Twitter and Facebook profile to the I’m a Proud Member graphic. Copy and save the graphic as your profile picture for August.

Watch and share. Download RI President Gary C.K. Huang’s video on membership from Rotary’s Vimeo page. Watch it when you have a few minutes to spare to highlight the vital role membership plays in maintaining a strong and active club.

Exchange ideas. Do you have successful membership strategies that have worked well in your community?

We Are Rotary. Using the hashtag #WeAreRotary, post photos to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or Vine of your club members at work in your community or abroad to show how Rotary makes a positive impact in the world.

It’s Now or Never. Join us on August 13 at 10:00 Chicago time (UTC-5) for our Membership: It’s Now or Never webinar. It will feature international membership expert Nikki Walker discussing innovative ways of thinking about membership.

Making a difference. Rotary clubs are known for the high-impact service projects they undertake locally and globally. Share stories about your service projects and how they improve lives on Rotary Showcase. Be sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram

to see what Rotary members around the world are doing to celebrate Membership Month.

What does Rotary mean to you? Rotary members have pushed polio to the brink of eradication, delivered clean water to those in need, improved their local communities, provided scholarships to the next generation of peacemakers, and continued to do good in the world.

Some of these activities have already taken place, but if you go to the Rotary International Website you will find some great information relating to membership.

Please enjoy your week as we Light up Rotary.

From President Esther ...

As President Esther has already mentioned, the member numbers were down at our last meeting due to illness.

President Esther spoke briefly about Climb for a Smile and passed around some raffle books for members to support the cause. If you’re interested in buying tickets, please ask President Esther, tickets are $10 each and the major prize is a 12 day cruise on the Sea Princess valued at $8000!

President Esther advised that Gavin is doing well.

There will be no meeting on 25 August as we will be joining Boulder and Hannans to meet DG Brian on 26 August.

Sue Morley drew the lucky ticket for Joker Jackpot, but unfortunately chose the King of Diamonds.

Our best wishes and thoughts to:

All members who have been under the weather

Our guest and guest speaker on Monday night was Mike Lee from the Goldfields Brass Band.

Mike came along to accept financial support from the Club to purchase a new printer and computer and took the opportunity to tell us all about the Band.

The Band started as the Boulder Primary School Band 51 years ago and had a number of names before becoming the Goldfields Brass Band in 1985. There are three members who have been with the Band for this entire time!

The Band took out the National D Grade Championships in 2013 and 2014 with members coming from all walks of life at from a variety of ages and abilities.

At full strength, the Band has 30 members and rehearses for two hours every Tuesday night, ramping up rehearsals before big events.

The Band enjoys a full set of instruments so that members don’t need to buy their own. Mike also mentioned that the success of the Band is due to the high level of commitment from Band members. The training band rehearses on Saturday mornings.

The Band plays at the Boulder Market Day every month and recently, on Sunday 17 August, played at both the Goldfields Troops March and the Long Tan ceremony.

The Band is fortunate to take advantage of a visiting conductor from Victoria, Wayne Bowden, who is the conductor of the Hawthorn Brass Band, the current National A Grade Champions. Wayne helps to motivate members in a positive and encouraging way.

The Band is housed in the Boulder Court House in Burt Street, Boulder and welcomes both playing and non-playing members.

Gloria Moyle gave a vote of thanks on behalf of the members.

HOW DO I FIND NEW MEMBERS?

Rotarians join and stay with their clubs primarily because they seek opportunities for community service, fellowship, and friendship. Many of the non-Rotarians you know are looking for the same things. Invite them to help with your service projects, attend a networking night, or participate in a club get-together and help them see for themselves how Rotary connects leaders to make a positive change.

Here are some potential candidates to consider for membership:

Friends and family members

Business acquaintances

Professional colleagues

Younger community leaders who are already connected to Rotary through Rotaract, RYLA, peace fellowships, Youth Exchange, and other programs

OUR COLLECTIVE IMPACT

Rotary brings together people like you — leaders from all cultures and occupations who want to use their distinct expertise for good. People whose sense of responsibility inspires them to give back to their communities. Who step forward to tackle the toughest challenges — and persevere to create lasting change in communities around the world.

Together, we empower youth, improve health, promote peace, and advance our communities in all corners of the globe. With 1.2 million members worldwide, our global community’s impact has never been greater — and it continues to grow.

When Rotarians come together and commit to a cause, like our PolioPlus initiative, the magnitude of our impact is clear. And with the ongoing support of Rotarians like you, we will continue the fight to End Polio Now.

You joined Rotary because you want to make a difference. Because you believe in our motto: Service Above Self. Because you’re committed to integrity and making change happen, and because the areas that we focus on are important to you.

Rotary’s 1.2 million members combine their resources and connect across the world to move communities forward with clean water, health initiatives, education, and more.

When you get involved, it’s not just your community, club, and projects that benefit — you benefit, too. As an active Rotarian, you’ll develop skills like public speaking, project management, and event planning.

You’ll meet interesting people from your community and from around the world. You’ll tackle local issues that are important to you and your fellow club members. You’ll feel the shared sense of purpose that comes from working together to better your community.

When it comes to being an active Rotarian, the opportunities are endless.

GARY C.K. HUANG RI PRESIDENT 2014-15

ROTARY INTERNATONAL PRESIDENT VISITS MANILA

Rotary International (RI) President Gary C.K. Huang will visit Manila on August 21 to 25. He will be in the Philippines as part of his 30-country itinerary to celebrate National Rotary Day, a high-profile event in a particular community sponsored by Rotary clubs for non-Rotarians, and to promote membership in Rotary.

Rotary Day is a fun-filled activity, such as a picnic, a sporting event or concert, an observation of a public festival or a cultural event, to introduce the organization and showcase its good works to the community.

During Pres. Gary Huang’s visit in Manila, the event will be held at Tuloy sa Don Bosco, an internationally-acclaimed shelter and educational center for street children in Alabang, Muntinlupa City, where he will meet Tuloy’s 800 beneficiaries on August 22. Rotary’s District 3830, led by Gov. Angelito Colona, is among Tuloy’s major, long-time supporters.

The event will also feature Rotary’s partners, the Rotary Community Corps (RCC), which assist clubs in carrying out their service projects in adopted communities. The RCC was institutionalized during the term of RI’s first and only Filipino president so far, MAT Caparas.

He is also scheduled to make a courtesy call to Vice Pres. Jejomar Binay at the Coconut Palace on August 21. After the National Rotary Day at Tuloy sa Don Bosco Alabang the following day, he will immediately proceed to Malacanang Palace for an audience with Pres. Benigno Aquino III.

In support of Pres. Huang’s goal of raising membership worldwide from 1.2 million to 1.3 million by the end of his one-year term in June 2015, six Rotary districts covering the Luzon area will hold a mass induction of new members at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza Hotel on the evening of August 22. Huang will personally induct and welcome the new Rotarians.

Arranged by present RI Director Guiller Tumangan and hosted by his club, the Rotary Club of Makati West, a dinner with Huang and the Governors and spouses of all the 10 Philippine Rotary districts will be held on Aug. 23. This is going to be followed by a breakfast the next morning with senior leaders of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry where Pres. Huang will be the guest of honor.

Pres. Gary Huang will be accompanied by spouse Corina. He is also slated to visit such countries as Argentina, Chile, France, India, Italy, Korea and Malaysia in his campaign to build public awareness of Rotary and to achieve his membership goal.

Four-Way Test of the things we think, say or do

Is it the TRUTH?

Is it FAIR to all concerned?

Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER

FRIENDSHIPS?

Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Quote of the Week

It has been the way of Rotary

to focus thought upon matters

in which members are in

agreement, rather than upon

matters in which they are in

disagreement.
