Congratulations to all students who participated in the last of our Interschool Carnivals for the year. Special mention of thanks to Miss McCarley, who again led Braeside to wins for the Overall Shield and Most Improved Shield. Students had a fantastic 2 days, braving the heat and doing their best in each and every event. Throughout the two days students displayed exemplary behaviour, modelling the school motto, “Honour, Pride and Achievement.”

    Championship winners were:

Jovania Ngabire, Kaydance Boyd, Lilly Quartermaine, Shekinah Mourish, Isaka Ndabumviye, Jaye Campbell, Chayce McKenzie, Zoe Keley, Shyhiem Mohammad-Diack, Sean Tester, Lara Smith, Ruby-Lee Katie, Ery’Anne Eri Amsari, Nathan Smith and Athirah Azni.

Special mention also to our very industrious and capable Choir students, who participated on Friday in Kulin, singing at the Margaret Cotton Festival. They sang Trepanging with tapping stick accompaniment.

Mrs Cottons comments about their performance were:

“Very professional entrance to the stage. You are well organized which shows dedication to your teacher - all paying attention. This song is about the Sea Cucumber trading, about showing respect for other cultures and with the food they eat.

You are delivering this message beautifully - very sensitive and with feeling. It is wonderful to hear you all playing your sticks in time - watching your conductor closely - lovely singing.

What a beautiful performance - you certainly captured the audiences attention”.

Our choir students also sang the Cherokee Morning song and Mrs Margaret Cotton’s comments for this song was as follows:

“Lovely smiles as you are singing. Keeping beat all in time. This is a beautiful traditional North American song to greet the Rising Sun. Lovely singing in parts - you are very clever and using your listening skills. The message of the lyrics in this song is for all of us to be thankful to our creator for the morning; family and cultures. Lovely disciplined group”.

Thanks to Mrs Newman and parents who transported the students for the day. Braeside will be hosting next years Festival and Mrs Newman has plans for an overnight Kobeelya camp for schools the night before. As a school we look forward to hosting this event and having many other schools visit Katanning.

As we talk of events, please make sure you have saved the date for the End of Year Concert. The date is Tuesday 4th December 2018 and we have scheduled a 6pm start time.

On Monday the 19th of November, Braeside will be holding a Road Awareness Celebration Day. All students

from K-6 will be participating in activities to raise awareness of Road Safety. To kick things off for the

afternoon, we will be having a sausage sizzle and a brief assembly and then will divide up into year groups.

During 2018, Braeside has been using the SDERA model to guide our health and well-being teaching.

SDERA uses a whole-school approach to educate students in drug safety, resilience and road safety. On

the 19th of November, we ask that children come to school in Hi Vis or bright coloured clothes to show the

importance of being safe when out bike riding or walking in our community. The students are also asked to

bring in a gold coin donation that will be donated to the Katanning Road Wise group. Parents are welcome

to join their children for the sausage sizzle. We look forward to a fun and educative afternoon.

    Planning for 2019

As a school we have been busy developing Learning Area plans for 2019 and undertaking the budgeting that goes around this. Specialist teaching areas for 2019 will be The Arts, Physical Education and Science. Stem extension classes from Year 2-6 will be offered, as will Art extension. The Strategic Plan for 2019-2021 is currently in development and being reviewed by School Council and staff. Interested parents who would like a copy to read and then provide feedback to the school, can get a copy from the Front Office. We value the feedback and input of all but are also aware that this is a busy time of year.

    School Based Assessments

Students are currently engaging in a wide range of assessments across the school. These assessments provide valuable information and allow the tracking of students and the analysis of their growth areas. The Pre-Primary to Year 2 students are currently undertaking On Entry assessment, parent reports will be sent home from this. Year 1-6 students have done PAT testing in Reading and Maths, Ballard Westwood mental maths recall testing and Words Their Way tracking testing. This data allows teachers commencing with a new group of students in 2019 information prior to starting and the ability to teach from day 1.

From 2019, we will be implementing individual evidence files. This is a consistent way to store assessment data across the school. Maths and Spelling tests will be collected in the files, as well as Benchmarking Reading records, Lexile results and all school based assessments. When parents meet for interviews or teachers are developing Individual Education Plans, this data is readily available.

    PBS Focus

The PBS focus for weeks four and five is Respecting Adults. We have been discussing how to be respectful when communicating with adults. Some of things that we have discussed are not pushing past adults when we are walking on the footpath, following adult instructions and greeting adults politely. We will be picking a Goldie winner from this focus at the next assembly.

Our previous focus was respecting the environment by picking up rubbish. The lucky Goldie winner was Raynell Aye.

Recipients of the pins for receiving 25 Goldies were Ross Pickett, Eric Eades and Beau McCarthy.

    BOOK CLUB

    INTERSCHOOL CARNIVAL

Last term we had a fabulous envelope handed in with money for a

Scholastic Book Club order. We have been unable to locate the

owner of the envelope and have been unable to pass on the

    books that have arrived.

Please contact the office if this envelope belongs to you.

    Machine and Makers Workshop

The Year 6’s visited the Katanning Art Gallery on Friday 26th

October to participate in the Machines and Makers workshop.

Students were able to view artwork curated for this exhibition

and created a memento using 100 year old hand cranked

    sewing machines.

CHAPLAIN’S CHAT: It has been a busy few weeks for everyone with a wonderful Show happening on Saturday 27th October, 2018.

The Braeside School Gardens are struggling to cope with the heat but we managed to find some good-looking silver beet in the Art Room Garden.

The judges were so impressed that they awarded us the Best Silver Beet of the Show, with a $5 Cash Prize! The money will be put to use to purchase more plants for the garden.

Well done to the students for their efforts!
