Description:A single fold duplex brochure meant to capture the attention of both the adventurous and the lover of technology.

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 13Julie Peterson

Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign

Objectives:Organization of elements on a folded duplex brochure.Create original logo.Create original informational copy.Clip and text wrapping of elements.

Process: I started off by developing the business idea and visualizing an audience. Next, I created a logo that I felt appealed to and outdoorsman as well as someone who appreciates technolgy. I then found some high quality background images to use on all sides of the brouchure and pulled together and created my own elements in Illustrator to add interest and humor to the page.

Description:Three logo variations for the same company.

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 13Julie Peterson

Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:Create original logo using Adobe Illustrator.

Process: This was a lot of fun. I used Adobe Illustrator to create some of my own elements such as the helmet, the spaceship symbol, and the ringed planet. Using the pen tool to create these was great because I’m no artist but this helped me output something pretty legitimate. Selecting the right typography for the task was challenging and required some searching on the web, but I found some fonts that really expressed my intentions.

EVENT AD1 / 3 1 / 2 0 1 5

Description:An event ad promoting a community toy drive for local children using a scanned image and Microsoft Word.

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 13Julie Peterson

Program(s)/Tools: Microsoft Word

Objectives:Scan and image and incorproate into an event ad.

Process: First I had to come up with an event idea. Next I had to find an appropriate image to scan that would evoke the correct ideas feelings. After finding the image I scanned it into my computer using my regular home scanner. I cropped the image to get rid of the white border and then added the image as the entire background of my Word document. I used pinks to create repetition and used the sunlight in the photograph to create a focal point. I also used Microsoft Word’s shape options to create a balloon that acts as a container for the title.

BUSINESS CARD3 / 1 / 2 0 1 5

Description:A business card designed using a personally created logo.

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 13Julie Peterson

Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Illustrator, InDesign

Objectives:Create a business card with an original logo using Adobe Illustrator and InDesign.

Process: I created the ogo in Adobe Illustrator using the pen tool and shape tool and used a bird phot as a reference.

In Illustrator I then created the front and then the back of a business card using the same logo elements. The bird on the branch became the main focus of the back of the card, and then the logo and other elements used on the stationary were reused to create the front.

MONTAGE2 / 1 4 / 2 0 1 5

Description:A spiritually themed montage designed using Photoshop layers with masks and typography.

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 13Julie Peterson

Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:Use masking and blending to create an appealing spirtually themed montage.

Process: For this project we were assigned with the task of creating a montage of images from different sources. We learned how to use masking to to blend one layer of images with another. The most time consuming part of this project was developing the message and then finding the relevant imagery. Once I found what I was looking for I opened my background file in Photoshop (the woodland scene) and added a mask to the layer. Next, I opened each additional image in Photoshop, clipped them and dragged them into the scene adding a mask to each layer. Then I began to use the brush tool with varying levels of hardness and opacity to blend each subject into the scene.

PHOTO DESIGN2 / 8 / 2 0 1 5

Description:This was a photo design assignment that required me to learn some basic principles of good photography, color, and Photoshop.

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 13Julie Peterson

Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:Use photographty principles to create an attractive photo design project.

Process: All shots were taken with a Sony point and shoot. The shot I ended up with was this colorful scene that I get to see every day in my kitchen. My wife took old jars and glass containers and painted their insides with bright colors. Her jars almost fit into my color scheme, Big Split Complementary, but I noticed my purple wasn’t the correct shade of purple. I also felt like my colors did not come through as vividly as they do in real life, so I used Photoshop vibrance and color correction settings to make them come alive a little more. I used color correction in Photoshop to deepen the purple towards a bluer hue. I made use of the thirds rule in my design and used the jars for repetition and color.

FLIER1 / 2 5 / 2 0 1 5

Description:Black and white promotional flier for leadership conference.

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 13Julie Peterson

Program(s)/Tools: Adobe InDesign

Objectives:Use proper alignment and use of whitespace to create an appealing flier.

Process: Performed 4 basic sketches of potential layouts. I chose the layout that I felt worked best for this project and used Adobe InDesign to then take that vision and design it. I decided to focus on the word “Leadership” to attract attention. I used an image of 3 young but professional looking college graduates to help draw the audience in further. I based much of my whitespace at the bottom of the flier and used some horizontal lines to create repetition.

WEB PAGE3 / 1 4 / 2 0 1 5

Description:A web page designed to showcase a personally created logo.

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 13Julie Peterson

Program(s)/Tools: HTML, Illustrator

Objectives:Using HTML design a webpage with a previously created logo.

Process: I created this web page using Notepad+. I’ve had some prior experience with both HTML and CSS in the past and so I felt at home with this project.

We were given a preformatted CSS style sheet to use. I applied this style sheet to my html markup. I then used Photoshop to grab the HEX colors from from my logo. Using CSS I applied those colors to various places in the website to give it a unified look and feel. I also changed my fonts to Georgia and Arial and declared some backup fonts just in case.

EVENT TICKETS4 / 4 / 2 0 1 5

Description:This was an extra project I deceide dto do in place of project corrections for my portfolio. These are admission tickets designed for a soccer sporting even.

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 13Julie Peterson

Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:Create a set tickets to a soccer sporting event using Illustrator and Photoshop.

Process: I researched this one quite a bit to see how real tickets are designed, Hint: Ticket design tends to be very boring. As I looked into venues such as rock concerts and provate shows the tickets became less fucntional and more aesthetic. I used Illustrator to accomplish my design. I used the pen tool, gradients, image placements to accomplish this look. I used these to present some virtual tickets that I purchased for my son’s birthday over the weekend. He thought they were real, so they must have looked somewhat authentic.
