IRISH HERITAGE SINGERSSunday, Mar 17 • 2 pm ◊ RUnder the direction of Paul Matijevic, the Irish Heritage Singers will present their St. Patrick’s Concert, "Portraits of Ireland" featuring choral settings of Irish poetry, contemporary Irish pieces, sing-along pub favorites, and more. Registration is recommended, but walk-ins are also welcome.

GLADIUSSunday, Apr 14 • 2 pm ◊ RInspired by the great composers, Spanish guitar maestros, and much more, this “musical mad scientist” is more than a fabulous performer and award-winning composer—fusing the elements into a refreshing formula—evoking the Spanish spirit, yet distinctly unorthodox. Relentlessly touring the United States, Gladius entertains and inspires audiences of all ages. Registration is recommended, but walk-ins are also welcome.

COFFEE WITH THE TRUSTEESSunday, Apr 14 • 3 pmImmediately following the Gladius concert, please join your Library Trustees for a cup of coffee and a chat. They want to hear from you!

THE GUYS WHO GAVEUS ROCKSunday, May 19 • 2 pm ◊ RSkip Griparis, the powerhouse singer, guitarist, comedian, and impressionist takes you on a chronological journey of music from the 1950s and 60s. Registration is recommended, but walk-ins are also welcome.

As the Treasurer and Finance Chair, I have recognized the need to raise some additional revenues to support the library. I have determined that our current funding comes from 97% taxes. Our first step was to develop a better investment strategy. More recently, we created a tiered system for allowing the rental of our meeting rooms for a fee.

Many residents enjoy the Picasso @ the library painting programs; for just $5 per class. To allow fair

participation, look for the lottery registration recommended by the board.

Finally, I have had people ask why other municipalities use our library. Poplar Creek Public Library is a District library with its own boundary lines. We cover about 80% of Streamwood and also a large part of Hanover Park. We also cover small areas of Bartlett, Hoffman Estates, Bloomingdale, Schaumburg and unincorporated Cook County. We co-host programs with the Villages of Hanover Park and Streamwood and with both Hanover Park and Streamwood Park Districts. We receive tax revenue from two counties. All are welcomed and encouraged to use the library, including non-residents via the statewide reciprocal borrowing program.

Once again the Board of Trustees and the Staff of the Poplar Creek Public Library District (PCPLD) are excited to roll out three more months of valuable programs and services. I hope you joined us this past winter as we were all “Yeti to Read!” Many minutes were logged and great prizes awarded. Maybe you checked out an item from our “Library of Extraordinary Things,” or worked on a project in Studio1405.

It’s election season and time to remind you that we have an appointed, advisory student trustee position that opens up every spring. Are you a college bound, civically minded teen? We invite you to apply for a one year term as our PCPLD Board of Trustees, Student Trustee. Applications available on our website and in our teen room. The term will run June 2019 through May 2020.

The Streamwood Woman’s Club and the Poplar Creek Library are partnering to offer a Candidates Forum on Saturday, March 23rd. Watch for details as to the specific time the various area contested race candidates will participate in moderated panel discussions in the library meeting rooms.

After the April music concert, one of three concerts scheduled this spring, plan to stay around for our twice-per-year Coffee with the Trustees. This is an opportunity for you to get to know our trustees. We are bringing back our program series, “Exercise Your Body, Exercise your Mind” and partnering with both the Hanover Park Park District and the Streamwood Park District. Just in time to tone up for the summer!
