Parts of Sentences –Subject & Verbs
Now that we have learned about the parts of speech, let’s learn how these parts of speech go together to make sentences.
Every sentence must have a subject and a verb.
1. A subject tells who or what the sentence is about. Examples:Judy teaches this class. She teaches another class on Monday and Wednesday. Her students study ESL.
All subjects are nouns or pronouns. Nouns are _________________. ___________________,
_________________, or _____________________. The seven subject pronouns are _________________________________
____________________________________________________________ Nouns can be one word or they can be part of a group of words called a noun
phrase. A noun or a noun phrase can be a subject of a sentence.Examples: Football is a popular sport. (one word noun subject)American football is not a popular sport in my country. (noun phrase subject)Neymar plays soccer. (one word noun subject)Lee’s friends will watch the Super Bowl together on Sunday. (noun phrase subject)
Your textbook talks about noun phrases on page R-3. Your textbook talks about subject pronouns on page 8.
2. A verb may show an action the subject is doing. Also, some verbs are not actions. We learned about verbs as one part of speech, but they are also a part of every sentence.
In sentences, verbs usually come _________________________ the subject.
Examples of Action Verbs Examples of Non-Action Verbs One student works as a
chef. He drives to his job after

restaurant once a month.
He has a job. His coworkers are friendly. They like the soup.
