Tune in to Hiki Nō TonightHiki Nō is a PBS Hawai‘i student news network that features student-produced news segments. This is the third appearance on Hiki Nō by our high school Video Production class. This one, mostly filmed and narrated by senior, Gabe Figueroa, is about an Island School alumnus, Luke Evslin, ‘03, who owns Kamanu Composites. It is an interesting story about Luke’s foray into the world of paddling and his recent near-death experience. The show will air tonight at 7:30 on PBS. Hopefully, you can all tune in. If not, we will publish the link to the site once it is online.

Third Grade Pancake Breakfast on Family WorkdayTickets will be on sale tomorrow, in front of the school, for this 3rd grade fund raising event, scheduled for Saturday, February 16, from 7 - 10 a.m. Proceeds benefit the class’s annual trip to O‘ahu. Tickets are $7, and automatically enter you into a drawing for special prizes. Menu includes: fresh fruit medley, pancakes, rice, scrambled eggs, breakfast meat, coffee, tea and juice. Plan on attending the Family Work Day, immediately afterward.

Midterm Progress Reports Emailed TomorrowStudents in grades 6-12 receive grades at the mid-point of each

trimester. Comments are always included if the grade falls below a “C” or if the citizenship grade is a “U.” High School student scheduling for trimester 3 will begin next week.

Orders are now being taken and you may sign up for these at the school Office where a sample will be on display.

Make Money With Your Art… or show it at a prime spot in Kukui Grove. Students are invited to submit pieces for a show being organized by senior, Griffin Lord. All kinds of art – paintings, photography, sculptures – can be for submitted for consideration. Space is very limited, so submit photographs of your pieces to Griffin ASAP at glord13@ischool.org. The show is part of Griffin’s senior project.

KINDERGARTEN – Students enjoyed a trip to the Grove Farm steam locomotive. They got to take a short ride and learned about this “ancient” form of transportation.

KIF SWIMMING – Island School hosted the championships last weekend at the YMCA pool. Our Voyagers competed in 14 of the 22 events, placing in the top 3 in five of them. In the Boys 200 Yard Medley Relay, Kyle Riddle, ‘15, James Papa, ‘15, Quinn Hannah-White, ‘14, and Kai Anderson, ‘16, placed 3rd. In the Boys 200 Yard Freestyle, Quinn Hannah-White placed first. In the Girls 200 Yard Individual medley, Kalena Wong placed 3rd. In the Boys 50 Yard Freestyle, James Papa placed first. In the Boys 500 Yard Freestyle, Quinn Hannah-White placed first. SECOND GRADE – The entire class flew to Kenya

last week, went on a Safari and visited a Masai village. Below are journal entries by two

students.From Mackenna Tamanaha:I saw monkeys destroy a car, a gazelle run into a tree, lions sing, a skeleton dance, hyenas laugh, an elephant walk up to the car, wildebeest cross the muddy river. But the best part of the safari was when the monkeys destroyed the car. It was funny because the suitcases were on top of the car. So the monkeys took some things out of the suitcases.From Julia Barzilai:On January 25, my class went on a safari trip. We saw many animals such as: baboons, hippos, lions, monkeys, elephants, warthogs, impala, buffalo, laughing hyenas, wildebeest and zebras. My favorite were laughing hyenas. It’s gross because they were eating a hippo. There was a male lion in the bushes staring at them. They sounded like screeching, six month old babies. To see the animals we got in raised roof Jeeps.

SPANISH – Students are having a Middle School dance on Friday, February 15, in the Frear, from 6:30-9:00 p.m. The theme celebrates the season of Carnival. Students are encouraged to dress up in Carnival

costumes (dress code rules apply). Permission forms will be available starting next week.

COLLEGE UPDATE – Ava Zebzda has been accepted at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. Kimberly McDonough has been accepted at Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon, where she was awarded a Trustee Scholarship, and to DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. Kim was also accepted at Pacific University of Oregon in Forest Grove, Oregon where she was awarded an Honors Scholarship.

BIRTHDAY ASSEMBLY – The entire student body rehearsed today for tomorrow’s assembly, which begins at 8:20 a.m. in the Wilcox Gymnasium. Performances by our halau, Na Pua O Kamaile, our Keiki Chorus and ‘Opio Chorus, as well as taiko drumming by Joyful Noise, will be featured. Families are invited for this 1-hour event. Students will begin their ho‘okupu projects immediately following the assembly.

After tomorrow’s birthday assembly, our students will spend the day on service projects benefitting their school and their community. Here’s what is planned:

ElementarySeveral classes will spend some time working on their auction projects for the Pirate Ball on March 16th.

PK/5 - Buddies will team up for a clean-up on the Island School/KCC/Kilohana bypass road.

K/3 - Buddies will join to visit with and read to elderly residents at Regency at Pua Kea.

1st - Students will make plaques to label the endangered Rosewood trees, recently planted on campus.

2nd - Students will do a campus clean-up.

4th: Students will meet with an administrator from Kaua‘i Economic Opportunity (KEO) and learn about the services they offer. They will make Valentines to go with care packages bound for the homeless on Kaua‘i.

Middle6th: Students will volunteer their services at the Humane Society, cleaning cages and playing with the animals.

7th: The class will remove debris from the beach and park areas at Lydgate Beach Park.

8th: Students will assist Malama Na ‘Apapa with a beach clean-up at Nukoli‘i Beach on the east side.

High9th: Freshmen will plant orchids and perform grounds maintenance at Lawai International Center.

10th: Sophomores will build and refurbish picnic tables on campus, and assist elementary students with their various on-campus projects.

11th: Juniors will travel to Hanchett Ranch in Moloa‘a to mend fences, plant native trees and shrubs, and care for horses.

12th: Seniors will spend the day at Maha‘ulepu, where they will remove invasive species and plant native trees and shrubs at Makauwahi Caves.

We hope you can join us for the assembly, beginning at 8:20 a.m. in the Wilcox Gymnasium.
