One-Half Day Bus Schedule for May Day CelebrationThe bus will depart Island School at noon. No lunch will be served. However, the lu‘au begins at 11 a.m. imediately following the May Day program. Important: Please make arrangements with the Business Office (246-0233) to meet the bus at the designated drop off points for your child(ren).

Lei for Sale on Campus before May Day ProgramThe Booster Club Lei Stand, located next to the Teacher Workroom, will start selling lei at about 7:15 a.m. tomorrow and usually sell out before the May Day program begins. Prices range from $5 and up.

Graduation Package One of the Items up for Bid at May Day AuctionBe sure to visit the May Day auction tomorrow on the administration lanai immediately following the May Day assembly to place your bid! All bidding closes at 12:30 p.m. For more information, email daryl@ischool.org. The Graduation Package includes two reserved parking spaces, reserved VIP seating for eight people, a specialty lei, $50 off a banner from Sign Art and professional photography services for the

graduate and family at Island School’s ceremony on June 14. Only one package is offered per year.

Post-May Day Do Drop InnThere will be Do Drop Inn after the May Day program on Friday until 5:15 p.m. Have your child(ren) meet Mr. Dean at the usual spot: on the bench near the keiki bathroom with home lunch or luau ticket on hand. The group will then go the lu‘au line and find a place for all to eat.

Tomorrow is the Last Day to Buy Prom TicketsTickets for the May 17 prom are $85 and will be on sale until Friday, May 9. If you need a Prom Agreement Form or you have any questions, please contact Liz Hubbard (liz@ischool.org).

Senior Cap and Gown Photo Op Next Thursday: Attendance is RequiredWe will be taking photos of the senior class in caps and gowns next Thursday, May 15, during the Grad Prep class at 11:45 a.m. Please meet in the Music Room to get ready; photos will be taken in the gym. Photos will be used for a variety of reasons, including the graduation program — so we need 100% attendance. Seniors can bring their own cameras.

MS Play ‘Agatha Rex’ Premieres Next Week FridayTickets are on sale now for the Middle School play, “Agatha Rex.” Set in a modern high

school, the story is told in the style of a Greek tragedy. Although this play is not a tragedy, it is loosely based on Sophocles’ “Antigone.” The Rex children all attend Thebes High School, which has a rigid dress code and a thick book of rules. Agatha seeks justice for her brother who has been unfairly punished for the exact same school infraction as her other brother.Twenty-two students in grades 6-8 bring the play to life on May 16 & 17 at 7 p.m. in the Island School “theatre.” Tickets are $5 each, or $12 for a Family Pass and are available in the Office or from cast members.

FACULTY ACHIEVEMENT – Social Studies Teacher Lauren Calhoun participated in the 51st Annual Merrie Monarch Festival at Hilo. A member of Halau Ka Lei Mokihana O Leina‘ala, Ms. Calhoun and the rest of the all-wahine group performed in the April 25 kahiko and the April 26 ‘auana, and won the 4th Place Wahine ‘Auana Award. Congratulations on a job well done!

CHEMISTRY — In Chemistry Lab, students are learning about the chemistry of soap. They are breaking fat molecules (vegetable oil) down to fatty acid chains and glyceride units. They then add

a sodium hydroxide solution, which

makes the sodium ion bind to the available fatty acid chains. The product results in a soap molecule.

SENIOR PROJECT–Senior Project Presentations begin Saturday morning (see page 4 for complete

schedule). Students will demonstrate their ability to conduct an independent study and arrive at a defensible conclusion on a topic of their choosing. Their results are presented in writing and orally. All are invited and guests are encouraged to move from room to room, choosing which presentations they’d like to see. One of the first students to present will be Kawena Kawaihalau ‘14, with her topic “How Art Affects Our Emotions” (see top left photo).

TRACK & FIELD STATES — On May 9 and 10, the following students are competing in the Track & Field State Championships at Kamehameha Schools Kapalama Campus: Allison Culliney ‘15, Moeko Fukada ‘15, Chan Hsu ‘14, Joshua Miller ‘16, Michael Miller ‘15, Madison Moore ‘15, Jade Murphy ‘16, Makenna Olson ‘16, Kyle Riddle ‘15, Kellan Wortmann ‘14, and Emanuel Zafirides ‘14. SENIOR UPDATE – Makali‘i Pratt was accepted to the University of San Diego in California. Congratulations!

SPANISH – The following students received awards after taking the National Spanish Exam: Allison Summerhays ‘17, Silver Award; Jaden Hamid ‘17, Bronze Award; and Alexandra Worley ‘17, Ashley Silvestre ‘16, and Makoa Pratt ‘17, received Honorary Mentions. The National Spanish Exam is given annually across the country, with over 150,000 students taking the exam. ¡Buen hecho, estudiantes!

LEI CONTEST – Island School swept the awards during last Saturday’s 3rd Annual Happy’s Keiki La Lei Contest at Kaua‘i Museum. 6th grader Ka‘ohu Ranis won first place with his wili lei, 5th grader Kahana Heen won 1st place with her haku lei, 2nd grader Kai Spindt won first place with his humu papa lei and kindergartner Mia Javellana and preschooler Nai‘a Spindt (also the recipient of the Youngest Lei Maker Award) won first and second place respectively with their kui lei. Bravo, to our craftspeople!

PHYSICS – In Conceptual Physics, students just finished a unit on sound waves and acoustics. In the photo, Eric Potter ‘16, is attempting to shatter a wine glass with only his voice. To do this, he must sing a note that matches the natural frequency of the wine glass. Although no one in the class was successful, some were able to get a straw in the glass to vibrate, indicating that resonance was achieved and the glass was beginning to warp.

TENNIS STATES – Last weekend, four Voyager athletes went to Maui for the Tennis State Championships. The girls doubles team, consisting of Alex Obert ‘16, and Katy Davidson ‘15, played valiantly but did not advance past the first round. Michaela Fitzgerald ‘16, had a tough draw and lost to the eventual girls singles state champion. Davis Huffman ‘15, won his first match and lost his second to a highly seeded player. You all represented Island School well!
