Chan Hsu ‘14 and Sam Goldberg ‘16 from Mr. Evslin’s Digital Media class created a segment profiling Mary Castelanelli’s balancing act with teaching at Island School and training for the 2013 Kona Ironman Triathalon. The show will air tonight at 7:30 p.m. on PBS. Hopefully, you can all tune in. If not, we will publish the link to the site once it is online. Save the Date! The International Hospitality Center has frequently assisted Island School with applications of diverse students from overseas who are looking for a quality experience with an American educational institution. We currently have a female student from Germany, a potential 10th or 11th grader, who would like to spend half a year at an American school. Clean Tech Competition: Early Registration Starts Feb. 7 This competition is a global research and design challenge that promotes educational trends toward student-led, project-based learning, for students ages 15-18. This year’s theme,“A Solution to Pollution” challenges teams of student innovators to design a clean technology solution to this real-world problem. Finalist teams will then be given a stipend and paired with an expert mentor to transform their idea into a prototype. For more information, visit www. cleantechcompetition.org. Heads Up Parents! Do you know what your children are uploading onto the Internet? There have been recent reports of inappropriate photo sharing by students as young as elementary school. Help your children understand that anything they share digitally can be viewed and used by countless others. This can result in embarrassment and serious privacy concerns. The best rule to follow is “Think before you Click.” Jog-a-Thon – Feb. 21 Elementary students are raising money for our playgrounds and sports programs. They are collecting donations from sponsors before participating in a fun run at Po‘ipu Beach Park on Feb. 21. Each class is also looking for volunteers to help on the day of the event. According to Hawai‘i Revised Statutes § 136: possession of laser pointing devices by minors is illegal and no person shall point a laser upon another person or animal “in such a manner as would reasonably be expected to annoy, harass, or alarm the person or animal.” In other words, students are not allowed to bring lasers to school. TRACK & FIELD – Students interested in joining our track team met at Vidinha Stadium Tuesday and will start regular track practices after school with Coach Eric Wortmann. The first qualifiying meet will be on Feb. 27, 4:30 p.m. at Vidinha Stadium. For more information, contact Coach Wortmann at [email protected].

MOCK TRIAL – Island School’s Mock Trial Team was victorious over Kaua‘i High Tuesday afternoon — by two points! Autumn Warnock ‘15 was was best lawyer and Emily Threlkeld ‘16, the best witness. Congratulations to Ms. Lauren Calhoun, these two young women and the entire team.

HS SCIENCE FAIR – The Kaua‘i District Regional Science and Engineering Fair is taking place this week, from Wednesday to Friday. Island School is represented by the top-3 projects in the 9th grade project-based science class: Michael Chung, Mabel Kha, and Andy Anderton. Michael studied bees and the ability to train them using a negative feedback loop to keep them away from pesticides. Mabel studied the antibacterial properties of agave compared to aloe and honey. Andy built a model to see if he could generate electricity from underwater currents using the Venturi effect.

SENIOR UPDATE – Kaimana Carney was accepted to Chaminade University in Honolulu, HI.

HS VALENTINE’S DAY SPIRIT WEEK – HS Student Government has coordinated a spirit week from Monday, Feb. 10 to Valentine’s Day Friday, Feb. 14. See page 6 for more information. Students must follow dress code and, if not participating, must wear Island School logo wear.

MS DRAMA – Chris Sweitzer gave middle school drama students an overview of stage lighting in their class today. Students learned to identify several types of lighting instruments and how they are used to achieve different effects. Concepts in focusing

the lights from various angles and using colors were demonstrated. Students got a chance to try out the light board and create “theatre magic” on stage. Students who find this of particular interest will be invited to learn more and assist with the lighting design for the high school play.

ART – The Kaua‘i Museum’s 35th Annual Art Festival for K-5th grade opened Saturday, Feb. 1, and will be on display, free and open to the public, through Saturday, Feb. 22, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Paintings, ceramics and handmade prints by 25 Island School elementary students are featured, along with the artwork of Kekaha Elementary, Kawaikini Public Charter School, Circles of Light and St. Catherine’s School. Congratulations to all our artists!

HS POETRY – 23 Poetry students competed in Island School’s first annual Poetry Out Loud Recitation Contest in Weinberg Gym yesterday. Quinn Hannah-White ‘14 came out the winner and will be in O‘ahu for the state competition in March 2. Bel Hinojosa-Mielcke ‘16 was the runner-up.
