Island School Chorus Spring Concert April 23Families are reminded to “save the date” as Island School’s four choral ensembles, together comprising the Island School Chorus, take center stage at the Kaua‘i Community College Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, April 23, at 6:30 p.m to present their sixth annual Spring Concert. “Keep Calm and Sing Show Tunes” is the chorus’ most ambitious concert yet, showcasing over 120 students in a tribute to the tunes and traditions of Broadway. “Keep Calm and Sing Show Tunes” is directed by Mr. Steinbacher and accompanied by Ms. Alfiler. Tickets will be available at the Island School office beginning April 14 and at the KCC box office on April 23 as space permits.

Mr. Dean’s Spring FunLooking for a fun place for your child(ren) to spend Spring Break? Mr. Dean will once again be having Spring Fun here on campus from March 31 to April 4. The hours are from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Cost is $200 for the full week or $45.00 per day. We must have a minimum of six students sign-up for the program to take place. Please contact the Front Office to enlist your child(ren.)

Rock-A-Thon Fundraiser April 12-13, Seeking Rocking Chairs and ChaperonesThe sophomore class will be participating in a Rock-A-Thon, where they will be in rocking in chairs for 24 hours, from 12:00 noon on Saturday, April 12, to 12:00 noon on Sunday, April 12, in the school’s Main Hall. This effort is to raise funds for the sophomore class gift. Their ambitious goal is to provide a full Island School scholarship by the time they graduate. Students are seeking sponsors to donate for the hours they spend in their chairs. If anyone wants to support the class, contact a sophomore student and feel free to support the students as they rock for 24 hours! They are also looking for rocking chairs to borrow and chaperones to volunteer for the event. Contact Sophomore Class President Brianna Griep (bgriep16@ischool.org).

Many Hands Made Light Work: Family Work Day RecapMahalo to parents, students, faculty, staff and other users of campus facilities for participating in Saturday’s Family Work Day. Much was accomplished; weather was cool and accommodating and volunteer enthusiasm was contagious. The Music Room was spruced up, and the Weinberg Gym walls and 5th grade girls’ restroom were painted. The Hawaiian Garden and Middle School HI-5 Recycling Station were cleaned up. In the Community Garden, vegetables were harvested, seeds planted, weeds cleared, mulch spread and the garden shelter was painted. In addition, ti-leaves were culled at Brown Hall.

SOPHOMORE PROJECT – Sophomores broke up into groups and participated in a Round Table Discussion facilitated by a social studies and an English faculty member on Tuesday, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. This concluded the three-phase Sophomore Project — an expansion of the Senior Project concept, and a first for Island School 10th graders. The objective of the Sophomore Project is for students to see how English and History provide complementary perspectives of the American experience. The Sophomore Project’s three phases are: an American Literature thesis paper in Trimester 1, a U.S. History position paper in Trimester 2 and a Round Table Discussion in Trimester 3. Tuesday’s Round Table Discussion allowed sophomores to comfortably participate in academic group discussions with their peers, using their earlier research and work as the basis for their comments. Judging from the positive feedback of the students, the Sophomore Project promises to be a new Island School tradition. Thanks must be given to Dr. Catherine Barale, Mr. David Reynolds and Mr. Jim Bray for spending months designing the Project and seeing to its implementation.

SENIOR UPDATE – Makali‘i Pratt was accepted to California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, CA. Kristina Scheppers was accepted to Seattle University in Seattle, WA. Bailey Schneider was accepted to University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Angelique Silvestre was accepted to California State University, Long Beach, Fordham University in Bronx, NY, and University of California, Irvine. Bella Voorhies was accepted to Dixie State College in St. George, UT.Christy Jo Williams was accepted to Lewis & Clark College and Reed College — both in Portland, OR.

MOCK TRIAL STATE TOURNAMENT – Island School’s Mock Trial team placed 3rd at the state tournament in the Hawai‘i Supreme Court Building in Honolulu last week Saturday. In the first round, they lost by one point to the reigning champions, Moanalua High. The following round they won against Hilo High. The first trial’s judge, Chief Justice Mark Recktenwald of the Supreme Court, told the teams it was “one of the best trials” he’s judged since 2006 and that “either team would represent the state well in the national competition.”

INTERACT CLUB – Supported by members Genevieve Foster ‘15, Whitney Summerhays ‘15, and Zeb Wichert ‘16, the Interact Club got their hands dirty and cleaned up the Middle School HI-5 Recycling Station during Saturday’s Family Work Day. They sorted through recyclable aluminum cans and plastic and glass bottles that filled 15 garbage cans. Those cans took up two trucks, provided by Business Manager Mike Goto and Interact Club Adviser David Reynolds, and were brought to and redeemed at the Kaua‘i Resource Center. $87 was deposited to the Middle School Green Club.

In honor of Student-Parent-Teacher Conference time, we thought you would enjoy this collection of points from an article in the New York Times blog “The Motherlode” titled “5 Things Teachers Wish Parents Knew: Your Children Can Do More Than You Think.” It has a perspective that you might find helpful. 1. Your kids can do much more than you think they can do. The next time your child tells you they can’t do something, step back and wait.

2. It’s not healthy to give your child constant feedback.Try asking the kids what they feel about their own work.

3. We promise not to believe everything your child says happens at home if you promise not to believe everything your child says happens in our classrooms. This one speaks for itself.

4. Your children learn and act according to what you do, not what you say. Practice what you preach.

5. Teach your children that mistakes aren’t signs of weakness but a vital part of growth and learning.

It’s okay to fail. It’s what happens afterward that matters.
