Missing School: A Message from Administration Taking your child out of school causes students to miss important learning that cannot always be replaced. This can cause students to get seriously behind in their classes and can be overwhelming. When emergencies arise, it can become necessary for your child(ren) to miss school for an extended period of time. While disruptive for families, these situations can’t be avoided. On the other hand, arranging trips and visits when school is in session should be avoided. Scheduled breaks and long weekends occur throughout the year and are positioned to give families regular opportunities for vacations. We encourage parents to take advantage of these, rather than causing their child to miss class. Doing so will maximize your child(ren)’s learning experience at Island School. When an extended absence is unavoidable, there is a procedure in place to help students and teachers deal with this in the best way possible. Should this occur, please fill out the Notice of Extended Absence form (see page 7) and return it to the Office as far in advance as possible so arrangements can be made. Rock-A-Thon Fundraiser Rescheduled: May 23-24 The new date and time for the Rock-A- Thon in the Main Hall is Friday, May 23, 8 p.m. to Saturday, May 24, 8 p.m. The sophomore class is looking for chaperones, rocking chairs and monetary donations. Funds will go toward the sophomore class gift. Their goal is to provide a full scholarship by the time they graduate. Interested donors can contact Sophomore Class President Brianna Griep ([email protected]) and Adviser David Reynolds (david@ ischool.org). Voyager Athletes Make KIF Winter Sports All-Star Team Congratulations to swim team members Quinn Hannah-White ‘14, James Papa ‘15, and Pualei Pratt ‘17; boys soccer team members Kellan Wortmann ‘14, and Emanuel Zafirides ‘14; and girls soccer team members Brianna Griep ‘16, and Madison Moore ‘15, for making the KIF All-Star Team. Madison was also awarded Girls Player of the Year — a first for Island School. Girls soccer head coach Colby Ayonon ‘00, was Coach of the Year. Kaua‘ibots Return with Creativity Award The Kaua‘ibots walked away from this year’s FIRST Robotics Regional Competition in O‘ahu with the Creativity Award and great experiences. The scouting team was influential and gave Kaua‘ibots an advantage for going into each match. Above all else, everyone gained the experience of working under pressure and maintaining a professional attitude about it. SPANISH – 7th grade students are working on video projects where they are discussing and comparing their favorite sports. High school students are taking the National Spanish Examination this week and next week. Students across the nation take this annual exam to test their Spanish skills and compete against each other. Awards and scholarships are given to students with the highest scores.

GIRLS BASKETBALL – The Tigers, a middle school girls basketball team made up entirely of Island School students, have completed its season in the Kaua‘i County Youth Basketball League. The girls had a fun and competitive season. The 8th graders want to continue playing in high school, so the Island School Athletic Department has agreed to sponsor a JV girls basketball team to play in the KIF league with hopes of fielding a varsity team in the coming years. If you will be a 9th or 10th grade girl in the upcoming school year and are interested in playing for your school, please contact Coach Kaipo ([email protected]). If you will be in the 5th through 8th grade and want to play in the Youth Basketball League, please contact Bill Suttell ([email protected]). The girls on the Tigers were Gillian Harrington ‘20, Sienna Martin-Oldfield ‘20, Lexie Warnock ‘19, Elianna Ramirez ‘19, Olivia Gegen ‘19, Loiusa Tanigawa ‘19, Summer Mead ‘18, Emily Sullivan ‘18, Risa Whetsel ‘18, and Damia Cain ‘18. Coaches were teachers Eric Devlin and Nick Lynch and Bill Suttell.

SEVENTH GRADE – The 7th graders are on retreat at Camp Naue in Ha’ena starting this afternoon until Friday. The purpose is social: to enjoy time together as a community outside of the classroom. It will be an opportunity to foster inclusion, communication, and collaboration.

GEOGRAPHY BEE – Congratulations to 8th grader Aliana Ho on her performance at the state level competition of the National Geographic

Geography Bee on O‘ahu on April 5. She advanced to the tie-breaker round, finishing in the top 25%. Thank you for representing Island School!

DRAMA – Students in MS Drama learned how to accomplish a lift this week. This maneuver will be used in their play, “Agatha Rex,” which opens on May 16. The cast is using a

Google Site to keep track of rehearsals and tech work.

HONOR BAND – Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School is hosting the first ever “Kaua‘i All-Island Honor Band” for students in grades 6-12. Island School students are invited to apply. This band will take the very best of Kaua‘i’s young musicians and put them together in one band, conducted by Mr. Thomas Bingham, associate band director at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa. Instrumentalists with at least two years of experience who would like to be considered should contact Mr. Steinbacher at [email protected].

7th grader, Erika Corcoran-Lewis is being brave enough to let 8th graders

Summer Mead and Sydney Agudong try out the lift. Jim Bray stands behind,

offering much-appreciated support.

The cast of “The Mouse That Roared” had their cast party last night at Mariachi’s.
