Report Cards Going out TomorrowReport cards will be emailed to parents on Friday, March 14, in the afternoon. Students in grades 6-12 will also be emailed report cards. If anyone would like a hard copy, please email a request to [email protected].
Conference Sign-UpsStudent/Parent/Teacher conferences will be held on Thursday, March 27, beginning 12:30 p.m. and Friday, March 22, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday is a half-day of classes. School lunch will not be served on Thursday. There will be no classes on Friday. Elementary parents may schedule their conference by signing up on the sheet outside of their teacher’s classroom. Middle and High school parents should fill out the attached form on page 5 to indicate the teachers with whom they’d like to meet. We strongly encourage parents and students to take advantage of this opportunity to touch bases with their teachers and set goals for the next trimester.

Luck of the Leprechaun March 27 for PK-5 (see page 6)Student Government will be entertaining PK-5th grade children on the first day of conferences directly after school is dismissed until 3 p.m. Lunch and activities are included. Update of On-Campus AutosPlease do not park on or drive across areas where students can walk or play. Motor vehicles should park outside the boundary poles and never park under trees or within 15 feet of any building at any time. Loading and unloading may be permissible under certain conditions but vehicles are not allowed to remain parked on the grass and must be moved to a designated parking area. Family Work Day Next Week Saturday, March 22Family Work Day is on Saturday, March 22, 8:30 a.m. to noon, with lunch and refreshments included. Things that need to be done include Music Room sprucing up, Hawaiian Garden beautification, Community Garden hands-on activities and much more.
Stanford University Programs for MS & HSAt Summer Institutes, students 11-17 will engage in 3-4 week intensive single-subject courses with instructors and
peers who share their talents, passions and interests. Courses range from biotechnology to entrepreneurship and creative writing. Recruiting Kamehameha Scholars: Apply by March 31Current 8th-11th grade Native Hawaiian students may apply for the Kamehameha Scholars program. Less than 48 hours until we boogie down!
DO DROP INN – Though there weren’t any classes, day care for PK-5th grade was provided during this week’s Teacher Work Days, thanks to Mr. Dean. On Tuesday, the kids participated in a K’Nex rock race next to Wilcox Gym. PK student Sydney Manibog was the victor.
KINDERGARTEN – Ms. Shantelle’s class created leprechaun traps in preparation for St. Patrick’s Day. The children have been placing their traps around the classroom this week at the end of the school day, then checking the next morning to see
if they managed to capture any fairy creatures, their coins or pots of gold.
FIFTH GRADE BIG ISLAND EXURSION – The class is embarking on the annual Big Island trip on Monday, March 17, and returning Friday, March 21. Their adventure starts on the Kona side, where they will visit the Three Ring Ranch Exotic Animal Sanctuary and Hawaiian sites, including the City of Refuge. They will then spend two nights at Volcano House where they plan to hike through and around Kilauea Iki Crater and explore Thurston Lava Tube. The trip will conclude in Hilo where they will visit the Imiloa Astronomy Center, tour the Lyman Museum and wander the Hawai‘i Tropical Botanical Gardens. Wish these kids a safe and wonderful excursion!
SOCIAL STUDIES – Ms. Calhoun took her Comparative Religions class to Kaua‘i’s Hindu Monastery in Wailua during Monday’s Teacher Work Day. A guru gave the students a tour of the lush and scenic site, bringing what they learned in the classroom to life.
SENIOR UPDATE – Ryan Feather was accepted to Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX. Christy Jo Williams was notified by University of Denver that her acceptance included a Dean’s Scholarship.

High School to Perform “The Mouse That Roared”

Island School’s talented high school thespians present the ‘60s comedy, “The Mouse That Roared,” adapted by Christopher Sergel from the book by Leonard Wibberley, in the Island School Main Hall on Friday/Saturday, March 21 & 22 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, March 23, at 4 p.m. In the story, a young lady of 22 happens to be the present Duchess Gloriana, sovereign of a microscopic country in the Alps founded centuries ago by a roving band of English bowmen. Gloriana, played by Deanna Sloger ‘15, comes up with a unique solution to the near bankruptcy of her tiny domain – declare war on the U.S.! There’s some method to her madness for her study of recent history suggests that the surest way to wealth today is to lose a war with the United States and benefit from that country’s odd reaction to pour aid, relief and rehabilitation on the vanquished. When her declaration is considered a prank, Gloriana decides to escalate! Tully Bascomb, normally a mild mannered forest ranger played by A.J. Ort ‘16, is commissioned to launch an attack on New York City so they can surrender and reap the rewards. Serious-minded Tully, however, upsets all calculations when he and his bowmen do the last thing expected - they win! In the comedy crescendo that follows, including some sharp words against the proliferation of war, this Cold War era comedy uses the magic of the theatre to invite the audience to consider “the impossible.”
The cast of amusing characters is played by 24 talented Island School high school and middle school students. Christy Jo Williams ‘14, plays the skeptical and opinionated Count Mountjoy; Ivana Wu ‘14, plays Beston, a man of the people of Grand Fenwick; Quinn Hannah-White ‘14, is the paranoid U.S. General Snippet, along with his two WAC daughters played by Bella Voorhies ‘14, and Hailey Lord ‘14. Kaimana Carney ‘14, plays the brilliant
Columbia University scientist Kokintz, complete with a comical Eastern European accent. Khayman Hamilton ‘15, plays the President of the United States and Zeb Wichert ‘16, plays Mr. Chet Beston, the Secretary of State. Two Island School teachers are also featured actors: English Teacher David
Reynolds, debuts as an NYC radio announcer and a U.S. soldier; Physics teacher Jeff Kozak shares a role with Kalena Wong ‘14. Also featured are Kari Whitworth ‘14, Layne Taylor ‘17, Kristina Scheppers ‘14, Amanda Nguyen ‘16, Julia Randolph-Flagg ‘17, Sydney Agudong ‘18, Manule‘a Trujillo ‘19, China Huffman ‘18, Julia Massaro ‘18, Erika Corcoran-Lewis 19, Corah Callahan ‘20, Maddie Conery ‘20, and Sienna Martin-Oldfield ‘20.
Directed by drama teacher Peggy Ellenburg, “The Mouse That Roared” promises to astound audiences with the high caliber of performance given by these young actors. Supporting the students in this grand endeavor is a small team of adult volunteers. Period costumes from the early 1960s have been carefully constructed by parent, Dora Sloger. Art teacher Penny Nichols, along with her students, designed and painted the colorful backdrop for the show. Assisting the director is English teacher Nicole Street. Sound will be run by local actor and KKCR DJ, Richard (Cousin Rich) Porto and Kyle Riddle ‘15. Lighting is being run by 6th graders, Maddie
Conery and Sienna Martin-Oldfield, supervised by Chris Sweitzer, of Wildwood Studio.
The wit and charm of “The Mouse that Roared” will tickle you to pieces throughout the entire performance, which runs approximately 80 minutes. Proceeds support the Island School Drama Department.

Award-winning lei maker Happy Tamanaha (assisted by her husband Kats and other Kaua`i lei makers)
will be presenting hands-on workshops on SATURDAY, March 15 and April 05, 2014 for keiki ages 5 – 18.
The workshop is intended to teach children how to make TWO of six different leis: (types) KUI (to string on a needle), KĪPU’U (knotted),
WILI (twisted), HUMU PAPA (sewn on a backing), HILI (plaited) or HAKU (braided).
There is a $5 fee per family. Space is limited to 10 participants per lei type.
Participants must provide their own lei materials. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
This workshop is intended to prepare participants for the Kauai Museum’s May Day Lei Contest on May 03, 2014.
