BY CHARLIE DIMPFL, CCM It’s hard to believe, but we have almost made it through another winter and can all see that Spring is right around the corner. The club is being put back together from the deep cleaning and overall refreshing we do annually and will be ready for another year of activity for all of our members and families to enjoy.
The year is already off to a fantastic start as a result of our Holiday Membership Drive that elicited an astonishing 42 new families to the club. As we all know, a thriving membership is essential for any club, and, the more active participants we have in our community, the more successful the club is as a whole. Membership involvement and commitment to this promotion was overwhelming and we look forward to carrying this momentum into 2016. Thank you to all who proudly showed off your club, encouraged others to join and helped us to build an even stronger membership.
In addition to deep cleaning, the February closure is an opportunity to minimize any intrusion on your use of the facilities and to execute some of the more elaborate projects that are difficult to undergo when the club is open. Many of these projects require the use of scaffolding which is why they are done during our
closed month. One such project is the rehabilitation of the ceiling in the main bar where tiles have become loose and fallen posing an injury risk to members and a liability to the club. As of March 1st, this project is still ongoing due to amount of work involved. Therefore the main bar will be closed at least the first week of March. We have made adjustments to our service to ensure that we have plenty of room to accommodate all of our member’s dining needs until this space is re-opened.
The other more extensive project that was launched this month is the long-anticipated conversion of the Informal Dining Room. I am pleased to announce that this is moving forward and is now in the concept stage where designs are being proposed to us and furnishings selected. We still hope to have the room completed by late Spring to take advantage of the sweeping views that become more impressive as the weather warms. Additional updates on these projects will be sent out via email to share progress and provide anticipated completion dates.

CLUB ANNOUNCEMENTS
continued from page 1GENERAL MANAGER
In our time of closure Chef and the Food and Beverage staff spent a considerable amount of time planning out a full calendar of club-sponsored events for the year. We have added several new events, while also enhancing many of our successful and popular favorites. This year, one of the first changes you will notice is the addition of our first Junior Carpet Classic to be held in conjunction with our Junior Sports & Activities Sign-Up. These events will take place on Saturday, March 19th from 10am-1pm. This will give all the juniors an opportunity to partake in one of their parent’s favorite events while also meeting the coaches and staff from golf, swimming, tennis and Kids Kamp. Another new twist to the calendar will be our Father’s Day Prime Rib Buffet on Sunday, June 19th. Be sure to make your reservations early as this event will surely fill up early. Finally, in an effort to add some late-night options, we will
offer nighttime music and dancing on the terrace on Saturday, July 16th and Saturday, August 27th beginning at 9pm. Please be sure to check the calendar as we have many other new offerings as well!
An additional aspect to the February closure is the amount of continuing education that our staff undergoes as a way to fulfill industry and association requirements, but more importantly, to stay informed on best practices in private club management and golf course excellence. The PGA Show in Orlando is attended by our Head Golf Pro Scott Brownfield on an annual basis. This year the focus of his education was the development of family activities on the golf course. This was a timely training for us as we continue to grow our membership and emphasize the family-friendly programming at CCP. Superintendent Andy Morris attended the GCSAA Industry show in San Diego that provided him with the latest information and trends relative to turf
and course maintenance. A week after Andy was in San Diego, I attended the CMAA World Conference, also in San Diego. Much of the focus of my week dealt with club governing regulations, healthcare, and the changing dynamics of the club industry. All told, during the month of February, we attended over 75 hours of continuing education that we can utilize to bring back ideas and strategies to strengthen our club.
I look forward to welcoming in another Spring season and thank you all for being loyal members. I also am very pleased to welcome all our new members to CCP and anticipate a renewed energy with this infusion of individuals, couples and families. We are excited to execute on our planning and preparation for the year and hope to exceed your expectations. I hope to see you all soon!
Charlie Dimpfl, CCM General Manager & COO
BON APPÉTIT FROM CHEF JAMES
BY CHEF JAMES KREMER CEC, AAC, ACE Welcome back! I am excited to start this season off with a new lunch and dinner menu, with something for everyone and every taste. I know that the switch to Meats by Linz Heritage Beef has been a big hit with all of you. We are always looking for ways to improve your dining experience and it is a big help to get your feedback. Please feel free to email me or call me anytime here at the club, as I would love to hear from you ([email protected]).
I am also very excited about all of the great events that we have planned for you this year. We filled the entire 2016 calendar with some fun, new events as well as traditional favorites. This month we are having a Fish Fry every Friday up until Easter with fried cod, flounder, and walleye available. The St. Patrick’s Day Buffet on March 17th will feature fresh corned beef and festive sides. The Carpet Classic, CCP’s indoor golf tournament, is on March 18th. And we have added a Junior Carpet Classic with brunch on the following day (March 19th) to be held in tandem with the Junior Sports Sign-Up. So while you register the kids for all the summer activities at CCP, they can enjoy a round of mini-indoor golf on the unique course we set-up throughout the clubhouse.
Easter comes early this year with an amazing buffet featuring seafood displays, sushi, chef-made omelets, carving stations and sumptuous desserts. We are also starting a series of “Themed Buffets” starting with New York Deli as our first on Match 30th. This night will highlight NY deli favorites such as made-to-order sandwiches, salads and traditional desserts. We will then roll right into the month of April with a Kids Cooking Class and an Italian Buffet featuring a made-to-order pasta station. April will also have two amazing wine dinners: first will be the Masters Wine Dinner on April 8th and then the Duckhorn Wine Dinner on April 23rd featuring wines that we have not previously offered at the club. We finish the month with Administrative Professionals Day Buffet lunch on the 27th and an American Family Buffet dinner, also on the 27th, that will spotlight home-cooked classics. We hope to see you soon for one of these many tasty events!
Bon appétit!
Chef James Kremer, CEC, AAC, ACE

BY ANDY MORRIS With spring just around the corner we are busy preparing for another season of golf. The carts have all been serviced and we are putting the last of our equipment back together. We will start to bring back some seasonal crew in mid-March to get things rolling. Wow, where did the winter go?
One of the first jobs our crew will have outdoors is to clear the course of winter debris. This winter we experienced a few ice storms and wind events, so there is plenty of “picking up” that needs to happen. We need to clear the course of winter debris before we can begin to mow. Once our soil temperatures hit the mid 60’s then the grass will begin to break dormancy and mowing begins. Initially our crew will be small in size and we will keep adding team members until we are fully staffed for Memorial Day. Most of our crew is returning from last season so we will only be adding a few new faces to our staff.
We will be completing our spring agronomic responsibilities in order to prepare the course for the season. Spring is always busy and we will be aerating in early May. There is quite a bit of preparation that goes into getting the course ready to face the stress of summer, so spring is an important time for the Golf Maintenance Department.
We will have 2 interns this season. Trevor May will be joining us from Michigan State University and he will arrive around the first of April. Our second intern is Riley Mullins who is currently studying at Illinois Central College. Riley has been on staff for the last few seasons and became interested in turf management
which led him to start taking classes at ICC.We welcome both of our interns and look forward to working with them this season.
Well, it is just about time to move the golf clubs to the front of the closet and get them dusted off. It is always hard to predict the spring weather, but you can bet it will be golf weather before long. We are looking forward to the 2016 golf season and to seeing you on the course!

Overtraining vs. Overreaching For many people the start of a new year comes with resolutions and a renewed commitment to exercising or training for a new fitness challenge. This month I wanted to address what can happen when this commitment leads to overexertion – specifically two issues: overtraining and overreaching.
These terms both refer to what happens to your body when you increase training or exercise volume - intensity, duration and frequency - too quickly without giving yourself adequate time to recover. Both overtraining and overreaching can cause physical and psychological effects such as fatigue, weakness, decreased performance and a decline in the desire to exercise. The best way to prevent these negative repercussions is to rest between workouts and eat a well-balanced diet.
To explain each more fully, overtraining is defined as continuous, intense training that does not provide enough time for recovery. It is a more chronic condition than overreaching. Classic symptoms of overtraining
can include: reduced
energy,
increased risk of injury or illness, insomnia, and elevated heart rate. These symptoms can negatively affect other areas of your life such as workplace productivity and personal relationships due to irritability
and fatigue. Overtraining can take weeks or months to recover from as a complete break from your training schedule might be required.
On the other hand, overreaching is an acute condition and is defined as a short-term decline in performance that you can recover from in just a few days with time off or reducing workout intensity. The most interesting thing about these two conditions is that overreaching, unlike overtraining, is not necessarily a bad thing. If you have a series of workouts where you overreach and then immediately return to your normal training schedule, you can actually gain strength and endurance.
Whatever your fitness goal may be, it is important to be careful about the way to train in order to avoid obstacles such as overtraining or overreaching. You should be diligent about not only making time for the exercise, but planning your routines thoughtfully. Understanding your limitations can help keep your body from an overload of aerobic exercise or overreaching. And, it is always smart to design a training program that is effective for you, to monitor how your body responds and to gauge your success against your goals.
Good luck on reaching your spring fitness goals!
FROM THE FITNESS DIRECTOR
The goal of any fitness routine can only be obtained
if you are diligent about not only making time for the
exercise, but also making sure you are not overdoing it.
