BY CHARLIE DIMPFL, CCM - Here we are again in the dog days of summer. It seems like it was just Memorial Day, but now we are getting ready for another school year. It goes by in a flash! This summer has been a busy one on many fronts: junior programming has its highest participation totals in the last ten years; golf rounds are up by over 1,000; and the pool has been busy daily with activity. Also, many of the enhancements that have been talked about for several months now are close to completion including: Painting – you may have seen the lift out in front of the building to know that painters have been refreshing the exterior; the results have been outstanding and it is a very noticeable change. Informal Dining Room – the long-awaited conversion of this space is almost complete; at the time of publication, we are only a few short days away from the final staging and opening of the room. Be on the lookout for more details and announcements! In regards to the new Informal Dining Room, there are going to be some exciting changes to the hours of operation for this space as well as additional hours for food service. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday nights the Informal Dining Room will follow our normal hours of operation closing at 9pm (assuming that the clubhouse is empty). However, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, this new space will stay open until 11pm, even if the rest of the club is empty. Also, we will offer a lighter, appetizer style menu from 9pm-11pm for those late night snackers (regular a la carte menu will not be available at this time). We will test these new hours of operation for this room for the next few months, but we anticipate this will be a popular venue. With all of the activity of the season, our staff has been in overdrive to address your needs and exceed your expectations. It is therefore time to talk about how to acknowledge their efforts. On Tuesday, September 6, the Club will host the annual Employee Appreciation Day. For those of you who are new to the Club, the membership graciously allows the staff and their families the use of the CCP facilities for the day. Many employees take advantage of a round of golf and swimming at the pool before it closes down for the season. From the membership prospective, we continue to grow our community at a rate that has not been seen for some time. This year we have 64 new families! With that, I would like to announce that we have only five (5) Lifetime Memberships available

for sale. As a reminder, the Lifetime Membership costs $80,000 and any current member is eligible. Lifetime benefits include exemption from future dues and assessments as long as you remain a member of the Club. When this new membership category was approved in October 2014, we limited the number of memberships at this level and only a handful remain. If anyone is interested, please contact me at [email protected] or 309-686-2582 and I can provide more details.

As we near the end of the season, I want to remind everyone that all membership categories have a $1,500 annual food and beverage minimum. On the bottom of your monthly statement it shows how

much you have spent and how much more you need to spend to meet the minimum requirement (see below). All food and beverage spending at the club counts towards this total except for the Grandview Invitational. If you have any questions about the requirements or are unclear of how it is communicated on your statement, please let me know.

This summer has been a great one in many ways, but as always, I welcome suggestions or recommendations for improvement. The staff tries to put out the best product on a daily basis and we are continually looking to improve!

Very Low Carb (AKA Ketogenic Diet) Ketogenic diets restrict carbohydrates anywhere from less than 30g to 130g per day, or less than 10% total calorie intake. These diets include moderate amounts of protein with the remainder of total calories in fat placing the body in a state of ketosis – or directly burning fat. The premise of the ketogenic diet is to train the body to tap into stored fat and run on ketones instead of glucose for any activity, from daily living to intense endurance exercise. There is much more potential energy from stored fat than stored glycogen. Researchers have noted improvements in bodyweight, body composition, energy, and endurance after adaptation.

• Effective in weight loss for significantly overweight individuals and improvement of metabolism.

• Improvement in body composition and weight which positively impacts athletic performance.

• Adaptation can take as little as two weeks.

• The body synthesizes adenosine triphosphate (ATP) from glycogen at a faster rate than from ketone bodies.

• High-fat diets can impair cardiac and cognitive function. • Adaptation can take as long as a few months and

performance may suffer.

Low Carb (AKA Paleo Diet) The Paleo Diet™ is notorious for cutting out grains, dairy, and legumes while emphasizing animal-based protein. The diet touts improved physical performance and body composition with increased energy levels. Although no research had been conducted specifically on athletes, there have been positive changes for subjects who are afflicted with metabolic syndrome.

• Cuts out processed foods, refined sugars, and grains; it also encourages fruits and vegetables.

• Recognizes carbohydrates as a source of energy during training and events.

• Cuts out entire food groups (grains, and dairy) so without supplementation, diet can be low in fiber and calcium which are needed for muscle and nerve contraction as well as bone health.

• Encourages animal protein, which can be high in saturated fat and may lead to elevated cholesterol levels.

• Can be expensive to maintain because it consists of grass fed meats, fish or seafood, organic coconut oil, and grass-fed butter.

PROS AND CONS OF LOW CARB DIETS Here we are in the height of the summer season - or as some call it, bikini season! During this time many people diet or eliminate foods in an effort to lose weight and look their best in their swimsuits. As a result, I wanted to share some pros and cons of eliminating or reducing carbohydrate intake – a common method employed to drop pounds in the summer.

Here is an analysis of two well-known diets:

Conclusion Both of these low-carb diets have positives and negatives associated with them. Because everyone has different needs and metabolism, eating plans should be adjusted to fit your specific goals. Important items to consider are your fitness or activity level and your weight loss goals. If you have any questions about what is suitable for your lifestyle, please don’t hesitate to ask!

AUGUST 2016 GRANDVIEWS4

BY SCOTT BROWNFIELD - Juniors, juniors, juniors!! July was a great month for several of our CCP juniors beginning with Tommy Kuhl (University of Illinois) who qualified for the 2016 U.S. Junior Amateur! Tommy shot four under par for the 36-hole qualifier to advance to the United States Junior Amateur Tournament in Tennessee where 150 of the best junior golfers in the country will compete for this year’s Championship.

Erica Kerr (Southern Illinois) made some noise in the Central Illinois Women’s Championship. Erica carded a two round total of 149 which was good enough to win her 2nd place in the Central Illinois Championship.

The Kuhl Boys were both in contention for the Illinois Junior Championship. Pete Kuhl (University of Wisconsin) finished with a plus 7 (220) to finish in 3rd place. Tommy Kuhl finished with a plus 9 (222) to finish in a tie for 5th place. This finish for Tommy gives him full exemption status in the AMERICAN JUNIOR GOLF ASSOCIATION. The AJGA is the highest level of junior golf in the country. This tour prepares juniors to play at the college level.

Trey Tussey (Illinois State University) also competed in the Illinois Junior Championship finishing at a respectful 18th Place. Trey also finished in a tie for 3rd at the U.S. Amateur qualifier in Bloomington. This was good enough for the 1st Alternate position, and he may have the chance to compete in the 2016 U.S. Amateur at Oakland Hills Country Club. Just a reminder, if you win the U.S. Amateur, you get an invite to the 2017 Masters and the 2017 U.S. Open!

While our “touring” juniors were making noise at the local, state, and national levels, Allison Kinsinger (Washington

High) won four (4) Prep Tour Events this year. The Prep Tour is a tour throughout Central Illinois that gives juniors an excellent opportunity to compete and gain valuable tournament experience.

Finally, Andrew Vanbuskirk (Richwoods High School) had his first hole-in-one on Thursday, June 23rd on Hole #13. Andrew hit a pitching wedge from 115 yards.

Congratulations to all of our JUNIORS!! Thank you to the Country Club of Peoria Membership for allowing our juniors to have great access to the course; today’s juniors are tomorrow’s members!!

BY ANDY MORRIS - It is hard to believe August has arrived. Where did the summer go? By mid-month the days really start to shorten and temperatures usually begin to moderate. These are sure signs that fall is on the way, and the kids are heading back to school! July offered up some typical steamy summer weather but also showed some breaks in the temperatures at times.

August brings us “back to school” time and we see our seasonal students return to campus. We are so fortunate to have some college student seasonal employees, but it is bittersweet seeing them go back to school. Universities represented this year were Illinois State, Illinois Central College, Northwestern University and Michigan State University. We wish them all the best of luck with their studies and look forward to having them return next year if the

opportunity arises. They all did a great job for us this year and we thank them for their efforts.

Riley Mullins will stay on as an Intern from Illinois Central College and be with us through the fall. Trevor May was our intern from Michigan State and he returns to school in August. It was great to have these two young men on our team for the season. Both worked very hard and gave a great effort to the Club and golf course. Thanks Trevor and Riley for your time and commitment!

In August we will aerate the greens. This is a little different then past years as we usually aerate in mid-to-late September. This year’s event calendar pushed us well into late October before we could aerify, so the decision was made to go earlier. The course will be closed on Tuesday, August 23rd so that

we may get this accomplished. We appreciate your patience with this process. The greens should heal quickly this time of year.

As we roll into August, it means September is just around the corner. Enjoy those last few summer days and before long we will feel the cool temperatures of fall. Fall is a busy time of year for the department as we prepare the course to meet the challenges of winter. Until the cooler temperatures arrive, we will just enjoy the last warmth of summer!

See You On The Course!

Thank you for a very busy season at the pool! It was great to see it being used more this summer. I am very proud of the job our lifeguards did with keeping everyone safe and helping to keep the pool area clean.

Please take a minute to see if you have any blue pool towels at home. If you do, please return them to the pool so we can inventory them and make sure we have enough – especially for Labor Day weekend!

We hope you all have a wonderful year and look forward to seeing you all back at the pool next year!

POOL INFORMATION & REMINDERS

It was the quickest meet ever against Decatur as they brought very few athletes, but our kids swam well and it was a win for the Club.

The team traveled to Mt. Hawley Country Club where they came away victorious and enjoyed the swim/dance party after the meet. We had several parents who stepped up to time when MHCC couldn't get staff - thank you!

Thanks also to those who travelled to Bloomington. We were very competitive on the boards and in the pool, but came up 40 points short. We are hoping that more families will make the commitment to travel to away meets on Sundays next season so that we can be more competitive with some of the very talented teams in our conference!!

The pool was very busy on July 14, as we hosted the annual Tri-Meet with Ivy and Mt. Hawley. We came away victorious and the dance/swim party after was enjoyed by the athletes and coaches!!

Thanks to those families heading to Danville and supporting CCP in the huge CICCA meet July 23rd - 24th. Look for results from CICCA and the end of the season wrap up in the September issue!!

BY SHANE SMITH - It’s hard to believe that it is already August! Unfortunately this is the month when junior tennis clinics end (on August 5th), but we will close out the tennis program with the Senior Tennis Campout on August 5th (originally scheduled for July 29th). It will begin at 8:00pm and continue into Saturday morning, August 6th at 9:00am. Kids ages 12 – 18 are invited to attend this

fun overnight experience with games and activities under the lights and a delicious donut breakfast. (NOTE: Don’t forget to bring your own tent and sleeping bag!)

It’s been great seeing new faces out on the courts and more people playing this summer. Adult programs will continue through the month of August with Ladies Drills and Ladies Nights

on Mondays and Men’s Nights on Thursdays. All levels of tennis are welcome for these events. If you’ve been thinking about trying to play tennis for the first time or try playing again, don’t hesitate to join us for fun.

Seafood Lovers! Don't miss out on this wonderful week full of seafood delights.

Chef and his culinary staff will prepare the fish in a variety of different ways for your dining pleasure. Features will change daily so don't miss out on all of the wonderful and fresh seafood dishes!

BY CHEF STEPHEN HURD - My first month at CCP has been great! I am pleased to say that in the kitchen and behind the scenes we have been off and running ever since my arrival making positive changes to both the food and beverage operations and to your dining options.

I held my first wine dinner last month and it was fabulous! With just under 50 people attending, we served four courses paired with four great wines. If you missed out, I will be hosting another wine dinner in September and hope you will join us then. You don’t have to be a wine connoisseur or foody to enjoy these events.

I have received a lot of positive feedback about the new dinner menu and am thrilled to hear that you are enjoying the new items we are featuring. If you haven’t had a

chance to try the new options, come in soon to taste and enjoy some of the best dining in Peoria. To keep the momentum going, this month the lunch menu will be changing with fresh salads and sandwiches.

In addition to the lunch menu, I have been focusing on baked goods in the Club. We have been diligently working on new desserts and fresh breads for dinner service along with breakfast pastries and cakes for all occasions. I am a firm believer in going the extra mile to make fresh breads and house made desserts to enhance the overall dining experience. We will be featuring these desserts and breads throughout the month, so enjoy and let me know what you think!
