Note from the EditorThis edition of Bowls without Bias (BWB) is the first of a fully funded magazine to be produced by the Men’s and Women’s Bowling Clubs.

Recently our licenced club decided to ultroneously discontinue their involvement by way of their sponsorship in the quarterly report.

BWB commenced in 1963 and was then posted to all members.

It was the chatterbox of the club.

Every club in those days had their own mag and there were so many Publicity Officers (PO) in both the St George and Sutherland/Cronulla areas that special district publicity officer’s pairs and fours championships were inaugurated.

Your current PO has been involved with BWB since 1977.

Members will note various new advertisers in this edition and we thank them for their financial contributions and we ask all members to support their various products wherever possible.

Men’s Bowling Club President’s ReportFirstly a great thanks to Bill for retaining this wonderful informative magazine.

The men’s pennant season has now completed the competition rounds and although our teams entered in grades 1,2,3,5,6, despite some great performances, were

unsuccessful in making the playoffs. All players competed with a great spirit and professionalism when representing our club. Due to many senior players not being available as they transferred to other clubs and with several teams unfortunately being changed at various times we had some lower grade players given the opportunity of competing in more higher grades. No doubt this will be of value to us in coming competitions.

Now to the great news. Congratulations to the No 7 Pennant Team who secured the zone 13 championship. A great effort by all players and the win now sees the team travel to The Entrance for the state finals. A mention must also be made of the big effort from the support crowd who braved the winds at Taren Point for the two days. Well done fellows and we are hoping for the best in the coming finals for this team.

On behalf of the men’s bowls members congratulations to Mary Teasdale who just completed her term in office as President of the Ladies Club. Well done and our members look

forward to working closely with the new president, Barbara Thurtell, to promote bowls within the club.

Well done to Adam Jeffery for his services this year as our coach/co.ordinator. You have been a source of encouragement to all bowlers within the club and we hope this can continue in the future. The selection of several interstate players was excellent and these members fitted in well with all club members.

The club will soon have a five a side tournament and this looks like being a great success especially with the sponsorship from Club Rivers and Carlton Brewery. If not competing come along and have a look there will be some excellent bowls in this tournament.

The men’s club will be running a raffle to be drawn on the Presentation Night. We need the support our members for this, as you are the personnel who will benefit from the monies gained. Tickets will be $2 each with three wonderful prizes and we ask each member take one book of tickets (25) to assist our revenues.

Our ‘turn the joker promotion’ is our other fund raiser and we would welcome more support from our members as again you are the ones who benefit from the funds raised. Hopefully with the warmer weather we may see a few more attend of a Thursday evening. Thanks to Sam and Mr Marsh for their continued assistance on these evenings.

Women’s Bowling Club President’s ReportHow quickly the time has come for me to write my first President’s report. It is a great honour for me to take over this role at a club which I hold so dear to my heart and to lead women who are such wonderful friends.

For those of you who don’t know me, I started

bowling at Panania about 20 years ago, then when it closed I bowled at Cabramatta before finding my true home here at Grandviews. I live at Chipping Norton, way out of the area, but for 14 years have loved coming here to participate, contribute and keep this club strong.

Thank you to Mary Teasdale for a wonderful three years of Presidency. Mary fulfilled the role with strength and vision and I can only hope to continue her legacy. I am thrilled that she remains a part of the leadership team as Club Secretary.

I would also like to congratulate the other members of the Executive who will lead this club in the coming years. To our new Vice Presidents, Janice Shaw and Kris Payne, to Mary and to returning Treasurer Jan Smedley, Chair of Social, Betty Stanford and Maureen Yates our District Delegate and to Judy Hunt our new Match Chair Selector, congratulations and I look forward to working with you all.

My first duty as President was a lovely one, when District President Judy Hunt presented us with our Grade 4 Pennants Flag. Congratulations to Jan Smedley, Dawn McGuiness, Barbara Thurtell, Beth Bray, Robin Newell, Patricia Crane, Lucia Werner, Shirley Morgan and Manager Inez Mullen. On a beautiful sunny morning runners up Picnic Point joined us, as we unfurled and raised our flag. What a thrill to see it flying high over us as we played. And while we have always appreciated winner’s badges in the past, there was something special about receiving our first flag.

I personally welcome the return to the club the Manager Ian Doherty and after meeting with him believe the club can only go forward with his intentions and assistance. On a serious note we wish Sandra and Toni better health in the future but I know with Sam and Peter looking after them these ladies are in good hands.

Keep your eyes on the information board as there are quite a few things being planned for all bowlers in the near future and please assist us with the raffle ticket sales.

I thank the fellow members of the bowls committee for their assistance and I can assure you all are endeavoring to promote the bowling within the area.

C U on the greens soon.

Our Comms Officer, Toni Plunkett has called it a day. Thanks for your work especially behind the lens and in compiling our monthly newsletter. Enjoy your cruise and see you back at Grandviews in the spring.

We have many members, including Toni, who are not in the best of health. Thinking of you all. But it is good to see Neville Shaw back at Grandviews. On a more positive note we have celebrated significant birthdays of Diane Hampel, Fay Nann, Ruku Rao and Maureen Yates as well as May Church’s 100th.

Since the last edition of BWB we have completed two club championships. Congratulations to Kate Chakouch who is now our reigning club Minor and Major Singles champion having won the minor last year and defeated Judy Hunt in the major in April.

Last week Mary Teasdale and Beth Bray won the Pairs in a close contest against Kate Chakouch and Kerrie Boughen, last year’s winners.

We also had success at District level with Mary Teasdale and Helen Broderick defeating Dawn McGuiness and Kerrie Boughen in an all Grandviews final in the Senior Pairs. As well, the Senior Fours was won by Robin Newell, Kris Payne, Helen Broderick and Janice Shaw. Jen Wisby and Glen Hillen defeated Mary Teasdale & Adam Jeffery in the inaugural District Mixed Pairs.

Good luck to all of those playing in the Club Triples, the Minor Singles and the President’s Day Cup. To those who can’t participate, I hope to see you cheering from behind the glass.

One of our next major events on the Women’s calendar is our Charity Day which will take place at the club on September 17. Once again we will be asking ladies for their help and generosity in making the day a success.

We look forward to more wonderful results in the latter half of the year and once again I am thrilled to take up the role of Women’s President for this wonderful club.

Enjoy your bowling

Swamp Report by Gators Coach – Adam Jeffery

General Bowls News April – July• Glen Hillen & Jennifer Wisby defeated Adam Jeffery & Mary Teasdale in the Final of the George’s River Mixed Pairs. Glen & Jennifer

went on to represent the Gators & District at Cabramatta in the Regional playoffs but were unfortunately knocked out in the first round by current Jackaroo’s, Corey Wedlock & Jess Hogan from Cabramatta!

• Nick Buttolo is the new Men’s Club Singles Champion, defeating Adam Jeffery in the Final by 3 shots. Nick was in control on the lightning fast green, buffeted by gusty winds, Nick was just too consistent, withstanding a late charge from Adam to register his 3rd Club Singles victory at Grandviews. Nick will now play in the Zone Champions of Champions at Moorefield on the weekend of 25-26 August.

• In our Women’s Club Singles, Kate Morgan-Chakouch competed in the Champions of Club Champions and just got pipped in her first-round at Ettalong in the State Playoffs. A great effort by Kate, who is always keen to practice and improve her skills!

• The Men’s Club Fours was a keenly contested event, and yes, another Morgan was in the thick of it, Clive teamed up with Les Newman, Michael & Paul Rowe to defeat Michael Vaughan, Mark Shapter, Dave McCartney & Steve Jessep in a one-sided encounter.

• The Men’s Club Triples is down to 3 teams, with Michael Vaughan, John Seward & Adam Jeffery waiting in the Final to play the winner of the clash between Ron Williams, John Waters & Chris Blake versus John Menzies, Terry Brennan & Chad Grant. The semi & final is set down for August 4 & 5 at 12.30pm respectively.

• Riley Bristow has had a fantastic few months, winning the Zone 13 Junior Fours and recently being selected in the Zone 13 Junior team to compete in the annual NSW Junior 7 a Side held in Dubbo on August 25-26. Well done & good-luck RB!

• At this year’s Australian Open up the on the Gold Coast, we had a strong contingent represent the Gators shirt with pride….and yes, much frivolity! Chad Grant, Mark Kenning, Michael & Paul Rowe were all fantastic, each winning their Singles sections in a field of over 1,000 competitors, and Paul Rowe defeated Ray Charles in his section 25-0! Flash teamed up with the Rowe boys in the Fours, and the Rowes played together in the Pairs, playing extremely well winning their Pairs sections also.

• We also played host to the Bowls Australia BPL Cup based on the Australian Premier League format, also known as Jack Attack. We only had 5 teams of triples take part, and it was our own triple of Adam Hyland, Nick Buttolo & Chad Grant who won the Cup over a team from Ashfield. They now progress to the Regional playoff at Merrylands on 1 September…. you can do it boys!

Pennant SummaryI’d like to thank our greens staff, umpires, players, reserves, grade captains, managers and finally, my fellow selectors for making my job that much easier and enjoyable. All in all, the 2018 Pennant season was not a very successful one, but…. saved by our Magnificent ‘Fighting’ Grade 7’s who went on a ‘sudden death’ run, winning 5 consecutive games to ultimately claim the Zone 13 Grade 7 Pennant. What a fantastic achievement with some this their first ever full pennant season!

Grade 7 – Zone 13 Champions – Grade Captain David Lane, Manager John Knight

So, the story goes, after winning their final round 10 clash v Roselands and hoping either of the top 2 sides had a loss, which happened with Sylvania losing, our 7s eventually finished runner up in their section & qualified in 4th spot for the 2 weekends of knockout-finals.

See their road to victory below, qualifying with 7 wins & 3 losses to finish 2nd in their section, and 4th overall.

15-7-18 SUNDAY PM ELIMINATION FINAL 4. Grandviews (64) def 5. Taren Point (62)

21-7-18 SATURDAY AMMINOR SEMI FINAL 4. Grandviews (68) def 6. Sutherland (50)

N.B. *Our newly crowned ZONE 13 CHAMPIONS ARE NOW OFF TO STATE @ THE ENTRANCE ON AUGUST 17 – 19. Their first game on Friday 17th at 12.45pm.

Grade 6 – Grade Captain Riley Bristow, Manager Peter Plunkett

Finished the year with 5 wins & 5 losses, 4th in their tough section, and not far off finishing inside the top 2, an encouraging result, well done boys!

Grade 5 – Grade Captain Paul Wood, Manager John Seward

A record of 3 wins & 7 losses, 5th in their section, a year that could’ve reaped more success if only for a couple of close losses that turned into wins.

Grade 3 – Grade Captain Alex Fotheringham, Manager Graham Wales

Record of 1 draw, 2 wins & 7 losses, finishing last in their section headed by the super strong Zone Champions from Engadine.

Grade 2 – Grade Captain John Waters, Manager John Le Cussan

After dominating the Zone for 3 consecutive years, something had to give, and it was the loss of up to 6 players, either promoted to the 1s or lost to other clubs which sadly took its toll. A record of only 2 wins & 8 losses in another tough section which produced the ultimate Zone winners in Taren Pt. Savour those great memories of 2015,16 & 17 boys, you’ll be back!

Grade 1 – Grade Captain Chad Grant, Manager Adam Jeffery

Well with a record of 5 wins & 4 losses, we just missed the top 4 by one solitary rink!

I’m sorry boys for that 1 shot loss to Taren Pt…..sigh! We had great fun, built on our camaraderie and bond, blooded a few good 2s players, and we will always be Proud, Determined, Relentless Gators. See ya later Alligators, we’ll be back bigger & better in 2019!

The Future of Bowls? When an 11yr old boy says to you ‘Bowls is the best sport ever’ there is hope that this ‘oldies’ sport has a future.

Every Friday morning for ten weeks years 5 & 6 from Lugarno and Peakhurst West schools come along to learn about bowls.

I’m not sure who has the most fun-the kids or the volunteers from Grandviews who show the kids the basics and then assist them in playing games of triples. On the last day they play for chocolates instead of he jack and then have a barbie. Some of these kids have gone on to become junior bowlers.

Come and join us next year and get a different perspective on our game and enjoy yourself.

Events Off the GreenThe ANZAC day memorial service held at Grandviews this year was well attended by the young and the not so young. Grandviews Chairman, Alex Fotheringham, opened the service commenting on the evolution of the meaning of the spirit of Anzac. This year’s address by Billy Pearson focussed on the Western Front and with many interesting anecdotes captured the perspective of a soldier’s life at the front and as a result of the Australian commitment the endearing love displayed since then for Australians and their culture. All this without notes. Obviously a passion of Bill’s. As usual the performance of John Darcy and the Sing Australia Choir added to the overall solemnity of this occasion to fittingly celebrate the centenary of the Armistice at our club.

In May, the Women’s Bowling Club celebrated its Diamond Jubilee and President’s day. Womens Bowls NSW presented the President with a plaque celebrating our 60 years as well as presenting the merit badges to four very deserving recipients. Guests included President Mary’s immediate family and friends, Sandra Jowatt, Bowls Bowls NSW, Alex Fotheringham, John Seward, bowlers from all the Georges District Clubs and a number of former bowling ladies. A special thanks to the organisers and the Thurtell and Shaw families for making the day so successful.

Politics ExplainedI told my son, “you wIll marry the gIrl I chooSe.”he said “No.”

I told him, “She IS BIll gateS’ daughter.”he said “yeS.”

I called Bill gates and said, “I waNt your daughter to marry my SoN.”Bill gates said “No.”

I told Bill gates, “my SoN IS the ceo of the world BaNk.”Bill gates said, “ok.”

I called the president of the world Bank and asked him to make my son the ceo.he said “No.”

I told him, “my SoN IS BIll gateS’ SoN-IN-law.”he said, “ok.” and that’s exactly how politics works.

PoTPouRRI Highlight of the month was undoubtedly the amazing success of our No. 7 Pennants side. Despite a 58 points drubbing in their first game of the season they turned it around to just scrape into the sectional playoffs, culminating with convincing wins and quarter and semi-finals, and a convincing win in the final (66-51).

It is now off The Entrance for the State playoffs commencing Friday 17 August….nothing is impossible.

David Lane must be thinking all his Christmases have come at once. Winning a zone badge in his very first season. A special mention must also be made of a reluctant skipper, Brian Steward. Brian went from lead last year to skipping a rink this year. Quite the achievement. Definetly foreman material.

This addition of BWB is the first to recognise the appointment of Ray Tozer to the licenced club’s board. Ray has an impressive background in administration and his ‘cut to the chase’ personality should be of great benefit to our club going forward.

Has anyone noticed the warmer and convivial atmosphere in the club these days. One reason could be the return of the comeback kid, Ian Doherty and the other, well we all know, don’t we?

Fran Price went down the compulsory eight count, yet again recently. But you can’t keep a good woman down. Her trainer, Johnny Walker has scotched all rumours of an early retirement and is keeping her on ice for future engagements.

When interviewed he commented ‘as long as my charge has some blood in her veins, she will battle on, to the bar’, which is good news for her many fans and the staff.

John and Judy Moon are away on yet another trip. This time to the Orient. Their hopes of winning the Gulliver’s award for the most travelled couple in the club has been scuttled, with Richard and Pat Crane being the undisputed champions by again trumping everyone with a three month cruise, opening an even bigger lead on the field. The only winners in all this must be the travel agents.

Good to see Bruce Bray still coming to the club. He is often seen supporting the light of his life Beth on the greens.

Sunday morning also attracts one of the old timers, Don Bell to the Club. Still telling stories about the tricks he has played holding up his four fingered hand.

Who was it had to go to Court recently? He was pretty sceptical of his chances, stating, “I am putting my faith in the hands of 12 people who weren’t even capable of getting themselves out of jury service.

We have heard on the ‘Grandviews Grape Vine’ that our current caterers have been moved on. We wish Andy and Brandon all the best at their new club in Menai. As for the new caterers we can’t assist as the rumours are not confirmed and no Board announcement about this matter.

PEAKHURST PRIVATE HOSPITAL Patient: Mr G Views – ‘fluids only-for now’

Since our last edition Mr Views has undergone further radical surgery with the inexperienced lead doctor being moved aside and replaced with a more experienced and better known specialist. With this change the immediate family are hopeful that with possible further minor surgery his condition may improve, but his future prognosis is still unclear. We all can only hope with this recent change of doctor and the treatment regime it may lead to an improvement for this old campaigner.

Vale

Bowls without Bias, again breaking the ‘real’ news. You read it here first. In the April addition of BWB you will note that we were ahead of the pack with this scoop, and below is the proof contained in a Daily Telegraph editorial banner four weeks ago advocating the need for weight divisions for our rugby league juniors.

Frank HIGGINS 25 June

A very popular member. Frank was a good sport and a very loyal supporter of the Sunday Sipper’s and even turned up when in failing health. Sadly missed.

Laurie GREENING 30 April

Laurie was a real veteran of the club. He really loved his bowls and those ‘marbles’ of his often found the long way to the jack. I am sure he smiled to himself ‘up their’ on Sunday when the seven’s took out the final.

Vic HARDY 1 July

A truer bloke you would never meet. Vic was an excellent sportsman in his day, in particular with his cricket. In his later years was a keen Sunday sipper and most fully unsuccessful punter. We will all miss the ‘inflictor’s’ dinky die attitude. HOO ROO YOU!

Lugarno Ferry 1887 – 1974

A notice in the Government Gazette dated the 10th June, 1887 notified the re-establishment of a ferry at Lugarno. “The Governor...by this proclamation direct and appoint that a point on the George’s River known as the Old George’s River Crossing, now known as Lugano, shall be a Public Ferry, at which on and after this date tolls or dues shall be demanded, levied and taken...” (The tolls to be charged were the same as those applying thirty years earlier.). Tolls were removed from the ferry in 1907 and the ferryman was paid £2 a week under contract with Hurstville Council.

The mention of “Lugano” in this notice is the earliest known reference to this name, and the spelling clearly indicates a connection with the Swiss town of the same name.

An article in the Echo newspaper of the 23rd October, 1890 gives an indication that the reason for the re-opening of the ferry may have been the provision of a road to Liverpool.

“when the rocky Point and kogarah roads were opened and a punt placed at tom ugly’s Point the Soily Bottom punt fell into disuse. the road was neglected and became blocked up by falls of earth in several places from the cliffs which overlook it, but some two years ago a number of unemployed were sent to work to clear the old track and to make a new road to liverpool on the southern side of the george’s river, while on the northern bank is hung a large bell so that persons wishing to cross from hurstville can signal the punt without straining their lungs. the river at this place is about 500 yards across and a little lower down is fully half a mile wide. mr. J. hanson is the puntman and lives on the southern side of the river.”

The ferry at this time was a hand winched ferry. The ferry could take three horses and their carts if some skilful manoeuvring was employed, and the rear gate left partly open, but secured with a rope.

THE LAST LAUGHThe Big Question – Evolution or Creation?

a little girl asked her father: “how dId the humaN race aPPear?”

he answered, “god made adam aNd eve, they had chIldreN, aNd So waS all maNkINd made.”

later the girl asked her mother the same question.

the mother said, “maNy yearS ago there were moNkeyS from whIch the humaN race evolved.”

the confused girl returned to her father, “dad, how IS It PoSSIBle that you told me the humaN race waS created By god, aNd mum SaId they develoPed from moNkeyS?”

the father answered, “well, dear, It IS very SImPle. I told you aBout my SIde of the famIly, aNd mother told you aBout herS.”

Interruptions to the ferry service due to the cable breaking or in one instance sinking, were particularly annoying to the market gardeners of Menai, who had to go through Sutherland and across Tom Ugly’s ferry. In September 1917 a deputation met the Acting Minister for Local Government, Mr. Ley, M.L.A. for Hurstville, urging nationalisation of the ferry, and a new steam powered ferry.

The Illawong area was transferred from Hurstville Council to Sutherland Council in 1921. Hurstville Council saw this as their opportunity to pass responsibility for the Lugarno ferry over to Sutherland Council.

In 1923 Sutherland Council called tenders for the continuous operation of the ferry. According to the Annual Report of the ferryman to Sutherland Council 1868 motor cars and bicycles, and 24,307 passengers were carried in 1923. The ferryman was on duty day and night and received £4 a week for continuous service. The Propeller newspaper of 8 February, 1924 described this as absolute slavery.

The hand winched ferry ceased operations in August 1927 and re-opened eight months later with a six car diesel ferry given to Sutherland Shire Council by the Department of Public Works. The ferry was already old when it was installed at Lugarno, and it required a great deal of money to be spent on it and was inadequate for the increasing traffic of the 1950s, and a new sixteen car ferry commenced operation at Lugarno in 1961.

The Lugarno Ferry closed in 1974 following the opening of the Alfords Point Bridge on the 7th September, 1973.

The bell at Lugarno, used to call the ferryman on the other side of the river was taken to the Oti River Leprosaurium, Ghana, by a missionary from the Lugarno Baptist Church.
