make networking work for you

NETWORKINGIS IMPORTANT
Networking is a great tool to help build your
career because the connections could lead to
job advancement and opportunities, but
making lasting relationships with people can
be challenging.
Here are some tips that will help you when
you go to any networking event or any
impromptu meeting
Be AuthenticFirst of all, think of networking as just a way to meet people and
not only as a way to further your career. This line of thinking
will not only make your conversations feel less forced, but it will
also take away the layer of inauthenticity that often comes about
during a networking conversation.
When talking to someone, be interested in their story and try to
find common ground between the two of you. Be attentive in the
conversation and show that you care. Make human connections
with people as this is far more valuable than just a business
connection.
Ask insightful questions and really listen to their answers.
KNOW YOURWORTH
Don’t act as though a CEO or someone in upper management is more
important than you because they are in a position with more power.
Before even going to the event, think about what traits, experiences,
skills, and knowledge do you have that makes you stand out. Go into the
event with this confidence and talk to anyone there as an equal.
FOLLOW UPFollow up with a few people you talked to within a
few days. Writing a quick email shortly after
meeting the person is going to be easier than trying
to reconnect a few months later.
Bring up a few of the topics you talked about and
show your interest in that person and want to keep
in touch.
Try to think of that person as a friend rather than a
profile you were able to gain on your LinkedIn
account.
