Long Range PlanningBy Irwin Regent, Chair

With the completion of our new front stairway and the renovated Gallery Restrooms, the committee’s focus will now shift to a comprehensive long range plan for improvements to the Tennis Center. Short term, (3-5 years) we will recommend cosmetic renovations to this 30+ year-old building. However, long term we need to consider possible ancillary needs and uses that could be accommodated in a new building, perhaps built in a more central location within the tennis and pickleball complex and closer to parking. We welcome thoughts and ideas from the membership.

Also on our agenda is the development of the North Gate parcel to include a dog park, basketball court, bocce and a walking and jogging track. We are also studying various plans for providing additional parking.

Our aim is to continue to improve our existing facilities as well as responding to membership’s wishes to add new amenities as we strive to maintain our position as one of South Florida’s premier country club communities.

F r o m o u r P R E S I D E N T

Dear Members:

We would like to “Welcome Back” all our snowbirds. We hope that you have had a chance to see

all the wonderful renovations that have been going on here at Hunters Run. The front entrance

staircase including new lighting and landscaping has been completed. The members really enjoy

the look of it and in the evenings, it is truly spectacular. The Fitness Center flooring is complete

and the look and safety features are a welcome addition to the facility. The fountain which was

installed on 9 East makes a wonderful impression as one rounds the corner. It is a nice

enhancement to this area.

The Gallery restrooms have been completed. There is new granite, wallpaper and a refreshed look

to the entire area of both women’s and men’s restrooms.

We would like to thank Amy Volk and her entire staff for their hard work and continuous efforts

to clean up the roads and golf courses after Hurricane Irma. We would like to thank our

clubhouse maintenance staff, led by Jim La Sassa, for their efforts in protecting the property in

advance of the storm and repairing and monitoring any items such as A/C, generators and power

and gas lines during and after the hurricane. The damage to the clubhouse and adjacent property

was minimal compared to what it could have been.

We also give a special thanks to Lukasz Kotowski and his G4S staff for everything that they did to

keep us safe during Irma. We also appreciate the efforts of the CERT team for being there for our

residents and our community. They were well prepared and did a great job.

We had another Pool Party which was well attended and everyone had a great time. I am looking

forward to having dinner at The Palms Steakhouse, which is our latest new venue. We have a

calendar filled with many activities and events. It is planned around your ideas, suggestions and

enjoyment. I am looking forward to all of us having a terrific season together.

Best regards,

Bernie Silver

President

FEATUREA HOUSE TOUR

TOURING INSPIRED HUNTERS RUN HOMESBy Judie Spinner

Hunters Run homes sparkle with high style, high tech, art, color, innovation and wit. In a wide range of traditional and contemporary settings, there is visual drama, from peaceful to dynamic. Whether it is a house, a villa, or an apartment, every home is unique and reflects differences in style, background and personality.

Our first “House Tour” includes:

Sweep ordinary under the rug at Barbara Leidner’s Hampshire Lane home.... especially under the vibrant, contemporary rugs that her late husband, Norman Fleischner, designed. This is a house of audacious whimsy. At the front door there’s a sign inviting you to GIGGLE. And you do so in every room. The walls, ceilings, floors and furniture entice and tickle you. Your interest is piqued at the tongue-in-cheek ‘crystal chandelier.’

The chairs will amuse you. Yes, they are The Three Stooges, the faces of Moe, Larry and Curly, vividly painted on the three attached theater seats. And you will be charmed by the aluminum jester chair and the yellow metal moon and stars chair, both beautifully hand-crafted. Barbara points out an unusual upholstered chair from the 1970’s, inherited from her mom and some stunning antiques artfully mixed in with all the artifacts.

Check out the wood violin on the wall for an extra chuckle. This house decor is like a idiosyncratic museum. It’s a spirited mix. It’s the past, present and future. More than one viewing is needed to take it all in.

Barbara has lived at Hunters Run since 2001. She haunts flea markets, arts and craft shows, here, there and everywhere. Her house makes her smile.

Sharon and Stuart Sackin have lived in The Woods for a year and delight in the new, different look they have created in their fourth home at Hunters Run. Their 32 years in the antiques and furniture business influenced and led to the traditional focus in their previous homes. “Now we have what is called a transitional look,” Sharon says happily. “We have divested ourselves of most of our furniture and really enjoy the clean lines, uncluttered look of our new contemporary furniture, accessories and décor. We believe less is more.”

The feel of the past and present is exemplified in Sharon’s stunning dressing area. This spacious room is painted pale turquoise on one wall and a soft, pleasing grey on two others. A modern tufted cream linen chaise lounge and desk chair as well as two contemporary mirrors are in juxtaposition to the mahogany wood desk which beautifully serves as a dressing table. Embroidered sheer ivory beige curtains and carpeting define the space.

And from on high, bringing

the room to life, is the pièce de résistance. It’s an Austrian Swarovski crystal chandelier. A sumptuous room, perfect for dressing and relaxing. A large golden antique Buddha strategically stands right next to the front door. And you will see a small golden Buddha guarding the bathtub in the master bedroom. The Buddhas add to the feeling of peace and tranquility.

The Sackins are both golfers. Sharon also enjoys tennis and Stuart is the consummate biker. The card room is a favored place to play. But home is where their hearts live.

FEATUREA HOUSE TOUR

“Our bar is at the center of our parties. It’s a wonderful attraction. I love standing behind the bar and serving drinks,” enthuses Jerry Bloom.

Jerry and Sheila Bloom have been at Hunters Run for 13 years. They revitalized the bar at their Northwoods house two years ago because it needed repair. They wanted the bar to be more important in their home, to look imposing and to sparkle.

Imposing it is! Almost nine feet tall, it has cabinet doors with clear glass insets and rich dark wood surrounding it. The bar counter has a handsome marble top matching the marble on the floor. There are attention-getting decorative spindles and beautifully cut glassware that sparkle, as meticulously lined up as legions of liqueurs and spirits

beckon you. The bar makes the Blooms’ living room corner elegant and traditional.

If the Blooms’ bar could talk it might say, “You know, I’m custom made by two designers. My decorative spindles had to be cut in half and finely fashioned. My stained plywood is colorized so perfectly, it looks like cherry or mahogany wood. Did you notice my fine crown molding? I even have my own entertainment, a TV for all to view and my four bar stools coordinate beautifully with the rest of the decor. Sheila found the artifacts that add color and interest to my setting, including the statue of the girl playing the violin. Jerry, an avid golfer, loves the golf statue. Pay attention to me, but most importantly, do have a good time. That’s right, rally around me. I love company.”

The Blooms have achieved their goal.

Aesthetics and athletics don’t often go together, but in Donna Anderson’s home, they do. From the purity of the Spanish marble used on all the floors to her numerous sports awards and memorabilia, this custom home in the Estates is arresting. Throughout, Donna’s home is a picture of perfect simplicity surrounded by restful platinum grey walls. Look carefully and you see the nautical and sports themes in the art and sculpture. Fresh flowers add sparkling color.

REELING IN BEAUTY

THE MAIN ATTRACTION

“It took three years to renovate and complete.” Donna smiles, “It was worth the wait.” The visitor can’t help but agree.

In the kitchen and pantry, white Carrara marble is on counters, the back-splash and surfaces. Donna’s pristine uncluttered kitchen and pantry have windowed cabinet doors. This kitchen features useful additions including two wide refrigerated drawers placed next to the refrigerator.

Page 7: MAGAZINE - Hunters Run · Election Larry Bloch Liaison Judi Goldstein Grievance Intake Alvin Newman Appeals Carl Sloan Governmental Relations Carl Sloan HUNTERS RUN MAGAZINE Hunters

A wine cooler is set under the inviting marble top island. There are two ovens plus an easy-to-clean induction range for energy efficient, faster cooking. The marbled bathrooms have cabinets attractively mirrored inside as well as outside. Electric outlets are all installed inside the cabinets.

A custom-built billiard table is a dominant piece in the living room. Cue sticks are hung on a nearby wall. Five unusual bonefish paintings awarded to Donna for winning fly fishing competitions are displayed across the living room wall. Her fishing heritage and passion for fly fishing have led to Donna winning 14 world record fly fishing titles and attest to her exceptional talent and ability. Her framed fly fishing award-winning certificates are in the den, keeping good company with her other athletic awards. As a new tennis player, Donna is especially proud of her tennis trophies. She is also an enthusiastic pickleball player, a billiards player as well as a golfer. That’s when she‘s not working out three or four times a week in the Fitness Center.

Donna is a handy person to have around. Check out her extensive collection of tools and the large, well organized

tool chest in her cool garage. Yes, it’s an air conditioned garage. Donna is currently building a house on Staten Island, New York, where she will live when she is not at Hunters Run, where she has lived since 2012.

It took three years to renovate and complete. It was worth the wait.

““

The four beautifully gnarled old banyan trees guarding Sue and Arnie Braitman’s Southport villa invite your admiration as you near their house. This comfortable, attractive home was achieved through vision and creative problem-solving. Sue and Arnie’s mission: live with ease and comfort and make the most of space.

The Braitmans’ dining table is set with attractive turquoise dishes. This colorful, wonderfully unbreakable dining ware set blends beautifully with walls, furniture, the handsome bamboo flooring and the rest of the comfortable Florida decor. How practical, how durable, how easy!

The Braitmans’ hobby room --- aka the den, sewing room and workroom --- has plenty of work space. Lo and behold---a concealed Murphy bed opens up to a very formidable bedroom when needed. “Our enclosed patio’s western exposure created an extremely warm area. It was so warm, it was unusable, even in the winter,” recalls Susan. “Installing an outside awning solved the problem. The patio is now sun protected, cooler and even more appealing to the eye from the outside,” she explains.

“Where can you find space for a TV in a kitchen?” asks Arnie. “This drop down TV did the trick for us. And it also has a radio and DVD player.”

Tight space in the kitchen? The Braitmans made the pantry 12 inches deep instead of the usual 24 inches. It’s easier to use. And you can actually see everything in the pantry. The kitchen feels and looks so much wider. Also, no more wasted space under bathroom vanities (you know, where the pipes reside.) The pull-out drawers are so useful.

The Braitmans have lived at Hunters Run for ten years. You might see them on the golf course or at the gym. And if you crave fun when you exercise, Arnie and Sue started a water volley ball game on Sunday afternoons at the Clubhouse pool. It’s fun exercise and even fun to watch.

“This drop down

“TV did the trick for us.

EASE AND COMFORT

A GIFT OF BALANCESusan and Bill Kuncewitch have the gift of balance in life and home. It’s not something they found, but something they’ve created. It’s evident in their Villa Lane home where they have lived for the past two years. Order, rhythm, and harmony blend together in stunning room vistas. They have taken walls down, opened up areas and created contemporary, sleek, yet exceptionally warm and comfortably proportioned rooms. Their completely

renovated kitchen lost a pantry room but gained workspace and grandeur.

Susan’s favorite room is her ultra spacious, modern, white --- pleasure to work in --- kitchen. She loves to cook and still finds time to do so even with a very busy, hands on schedule. Susan is also a devoted nurse and works part time. An avid tennis player, she started --- and is captain of --- the Hunters Run team competing in Claymates, a

new women’s tennis league. Bill more than keeps up with her. He’s a practicing pediatric physician and works part time as well. They both find time for golf, volunteering and helping others.

There’s a lot to notice in these handsome rooms. The living room has an elegant beige, silver, brown and white striped silk rug placed over shining toffee colored porcelain tile. The eye- catching cascading crystal chandelier is a grand attention getter. It took four hours to hang up the crystals as each one had to be hung separately. The Kuncewitches have also incorporated some of their favorite pieces from

their past, their town house at Hunters Run, and from their home on Long Island, New York. The oak dining table flanked by new chairs upholstered in beige linen is again a pleasurable balance, a blend of the old and the new.

The massive, deco style gold and black wood cabinet, the large lacquered white desk, area rugs and the couch in the den are home to the grandkids when they visit. The couch converts into a bed and a hidden, motorized wall is deployed and noiselessly descends to give visitors privacy. A back wall was removed, which transformed the room into an open and airy space.

Bill and Susan find time for everything, work, play and family. Balance is key.

You think you are in a five-star luxury hotel when you’re in Terri Doppelt’s master bathroom in her Eastgate condo. There is beautiful grey tile everywhere that you’d swear was marble, but is actually porcelain. Soft, muted colors and the contemporary glass doors get your attention. The bride picture on the wall adds a bit of fun and irreverence.

Terri is an interior designer as well as a jewelry and graphics designer. Her fine art and graphic background is reflected in the peaceful and harmonious silver tone shades

of her bedroom, from the slate grey walls to the bedding and pillows. And the pale yellow silk draperies add an interesting color palette to the setting.

All four walls of the den are painted a daring rhubarb color. There is also a bold mix of beige and black graphic patterns on the sofa, rug, and fabrics which combine so well with the inspired, unusual color walls.

What appears to be a large abstract painting dominates the living room, but surprisingly, it is a tapestry that Terri bought in 1979. She was in Israel when she discovered this dramatic piece designed by Georges Matheis as it was being woven by six women. Terri knew she had to have it.

In the gracious dining room, your eyes are drawn to a small Red Grooms sculpture. It is a rendition of a movie theater (the film title Tarzan is spelled out on the miniature marquee.)

Encased in lucite, the sculpture adds a witty, modern touch to the room.

Terri has won numerous golf trophies at Hunters Run, where she has lived for 16 years. Her philosophy: “You have to make sure you always find something to keep you motivated, something that makes you want to get up everyday.” Terri always does.

Shelly and Hans Gandras love to come home to Island Drive. “It’s such a comfortable, relaxing place to live. It’s airy and spacious. It’s our Paradise Island,” says Shelly. Hans agrees. They have been at Hunters Run for eight years.

The romantic spirit of the Gandras bedroom is enhanced by a striking 11’wide mirror with beveled insets set on the wall above the bed. It resides under a larger warm burlwood shelf. The bed displays a generous pile of lush pillows.

The elaborate hand-made passementerie tassel trimmings on the draperies and tie-back swags demonstrate how important detail is in creating a look of elegance. The statue of entwined lovers on the night table captures our attention. Subdued lighting from two graceful antique lamps, the crystal beading, an array of framed family pictures, all add to the romance and peaceful ambience of the warm, beige-colored walls, fine bed linen and fawn-colored wood floors.

The columns on each side of the entrance archway to the Gandras’ inviting dining room are an imposing architectural addition. The antique, hand carved walnut breakfront is eye –catching, as are the walnut dining room table and chairs.

In the kitchen, an unusual 10’ wide window has strategically-placed cabinets all across its middle. Outdoor foliage can be seen and enjoyed from under and above the cabinets. Add sunshine streaming in the window for a vivid and vibrant lighting effect. You are transported into the warm and airy Gandras paradise.

Today in Hunters Run, canasta is a favored card game. Although it seems as American as apple pie, the game was created in South America in 1939 — Uruguay to be exact. In the 1950’s, canasta swept across the U.S.A, reaching countless players in the small towns as well as in the big cities. The canasta craze subsided but eventually regained a strong foothold — as it has at Hunters Run.

“It’s a game that everyone can play. Couples enjoy it. It’s a game of communication through signals. And it’s fun,” says Marilyn Ptak, standing in above photo. Marilyn should know. She gives her time, freely and generously. Over the years, she has taught over 300 Hunters Run members to play canasta.

Each canasta class runs eight to ten weeks with 20 or 25 participants. Marilyn loves teaching these classes, which are held between 8:30 and 11:30AM in the Ladies’ Card Room. Learning takes place easily and comfortably. People who want to learn the game contact Marilyn. A schedule will then be arranged. It’s all done by word of mouth.

Marilyn’s reward is simple. She likes to help people. It makes her feel good. “It’s my chance to give back something. People come to Hunters Run from all walks of life. Some have never played cards. Some don’t know what to do. Canasta makes them visible. It gets them to interact with others. They learn the game, about people and themselves. Canasta enriches their lives.”

Marilyn is heartened that more and more men are taking lessons and getting involved in playing canasta. However, she does have a challenge. “I still can’t get my husband, Paul, to play,” she laughs. “But now, I’m getting into another fun card game, Kaluki. I’m starting to teach it.” Kaluki,(or Kalooki), is a rummy contract card game and is popular in Jamaica , North America and Europe.

Kaluki anyone?

BASEBALL HALL OF FAME

A member of Baseball’s Hall of Fame here at Hunters Run? Well, sort of. Roger Franklin, a long time resident of Hunters Run, developed a baseball game called “Challenge the Yankees” back in 1963. Over 250,000 games were sold in two years.

The strategy -based game has player cards of 25 Yankee greats, including Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford and 25 All Stars, including Hank Aaron and Carl Yastrzemski. The uniqueness of the game is that Roger developed a formula so that each player plays within 2% of his lifetime average.

This year, “Challenge the Yankees” was selected for inclusion in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. Roger’s son and grandson are in the process of bringing the game back. And like the Millenials, they are raising money through an internet crowdfunding campaign. Roger has indicated that 5% of net proceeds of this campaign will be donated to the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital.

If you’d like to chat about baseball or the game, you can find more information online.

Sue Ruskin’s mother was Bee Gale Schenken and her stepfather was Howard Schenken. Both were famous bridge players. He wrote several bridge books, was the third member of the Bridge Hall of Fame, and was known for standardizing the weak two bid. He was also a long-time syndicated bridge columnist. However, Sue and her sister grew up hearing about bridge so often that they totally rejected any thoughts of bridge.

Her mother tried to convince them to play bridge, but with raising a family and working, Sue and her husband, Bob, did not start playing until they moved to Hunters Run in 1993. They took bridge lessons and immediately became addicted to duplicate bridge. Today, it is an important part of their lives. At Hunters Run, they have taken bridge lessons here with Keith Hanson and look forward to our Monday night and Saturday afternoon duplicate games. Sue is now a Ruby Life Master with over 1500 master points; Bob is a Bronze Life Master with over 500 master points.

Now, when Sue wakes up and if it’s a bridge day, she is very happy. She wishes she could tell her mom that “Mother knows best” and surely wishes she had listened to her sooner.

16 NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2017 Hunters Run Country Club

The new season is officially here and lots of exciting activities are happening in Golf Operations: Friday Clinics, Demo Days, Mixed Member Events, and a lot of new and exciting clothing in the Golf Shop.

Work has been completed on the South Course bunkers. We have received plenty of positive feedback from everyone.

League Applications for the season will continue to be advertised on the new website and are also available in the Golf Shop Media Center. The four leagues officially begin the new year in November, however you may sign up at any time.

The Labor Day Golf Event on September 4th was a lot of fun, with 142 players participating on the East Course. The Halloween Frenzy was played over TWO days due to Hurricane Irma – Saturday, October 28th and Sunday, October 29th. Tournament players were treated to a delicious luncheon following tournament golf on Sunday.

Member Guest Events – By now all of you have received information regarding our 2018 Member Guest Events. Entry forms for each can be found in the Golf Shop Media Center as well as the Hunters Run Website.

We are excited to have three new seasonal staff from South Africa working in the Golf Shop this season. Please stop by and meet the new seasonal team of Associates!

New Practice Golf Balls have arrived and yes, they are YELLOW! That, however, is the only change. Please enjoy hitting the new, high quality, Titleist NXT golf balls during your practice.

N E W S F ROM T H E WOR L D OF G OL F By John C. Oyler, Director of Golf

Our hats are off with great appreciation to Amy Volk, our golf course superintendent, and her staff ,with the assistance of Word of Mouth, in the clearing of so many fallen trees and much debris after our encounter with Irma.

Because of their extremely hard work and dedication, all 18 holes of the East Course were able to open on Thursday ,Sept. 14th ,way ahead of expectations.

The South Course also had to be addressed after the storm while the sand bunker project continued as scheduled. The bunkers are looking outstanding and you will notice that the grass rolls over into the bunker. This looks great, plays better and is easier to maintain. The par 3 13th hole of South had two very large bunkers on both sides of the green. We changed this and made four bunkers with a grass pathway in the middle to separate them. This gives the players an easier access to the green.

We were able to open the front nine of the South Course on Saturday September 30th and had the entire course ready for play by mid-October.

The North Course received the most damage and will take longer to cleanup. During this time, you will notice that the grass is turning a golden color due to the applications being done now in preparation for the North Course renovation project starting in April 2018.

All three golf courses will be open for the season and we are looking forward to all our members enjoying the best golf courses in South Florida.

ALL

I first want to welcome all of you back for the upcoming season. We have added some new events for you this year. We have a Men’s Night, Ladies’ Night, Championship tournament weeks, Color War for the kids, pickleball league, and pickleball pool.

We have added some more Fall league play to the program. We have teams competing in the Palm Beach Open league Tuesday and Thursday and the Claymate league on Wednesdays. We will still be competing in the Palm Beach Senior league starting in January 2018.

We have just come off of a great summer, except for Hurricane Irma, and I want to thank everyone who participated in the summer pool. Now we have to concentrate on the upcoming season. The pool is the same as usual but there have been some changes to how to register for events. We now want everyone to register for events online through the website www.huntersrun.net. If you don’t have a computer please just let the tennis desk know and they will sign you up. Please use the e-mail [email protected] to enter your private games or make changes or add pool dates.

We will be running orientation meetings in the Courtside Café in November and December. All players are asked to participate as we will go over all pool rules, tennis and pickleball rules, and website signup instruction. Please check with the shop on orientation dates.

TENNIS TIDBITS

1. When you are playing against a team or person who always lobs, it gets a little frustrating. The answer is to hit your shot short, make them run in to get it and then hit it right back at them with pace or lob them.

2. How often have you played against a person who hits a drop shot for a winner off your serve and you have no way of getting it? - IRRITATING. Tell your partner to play in the middle of the court and you serve from the middle of the court, that will take the drop shot return of serve away.

3. Serving in doubles is all about court coverage. If you serve from the center of the court ,you have too much court to cover. Serve from just inside the singles line; you will find the return of serve will come right back to you.

4. When you are playing the net be sure that you are not so close to the net that it is easy to lob you. Be in a position just inside the service line that will allow you to cover your own lobs, except for the ones that land on the baseline. If you stand on the service line, you are too far back and the opponents’ groundstrokes will be at your feet.

5. In doubles ,always remember when you are at net, hit the high balls towards your closest opponent and balls below the net towards the furthest opponent.

By John Freeland, Director of Fitness

The Fitness staff and I are anxiously waiting to help everyone with their goals in improving their health and fitness levels. As the “birds” and “flakes” return, we are revving up to kick off the new season. We will once again have a full array of classes, and I encourage you to check out our website for the complete schedule or to stop by the Fitness Center and pick one up. The Fitness staff will be providing group instruction every weekday at 11AM for the months of November and December. Titled “Strength Training 101,” the instruction covers different muscle groups and which exercises to do to accomplish your goals. As always, we strive to make your experience here in the Fitness Center be the very best, but we need your help in doing so. Please be aware of others around you and adhere to the following:▶ If you take something out, please put it back where you found it. Leaving dumbbells, bands, exercise balls and other equipment on the floor is a trip hazard and makes it difficult for other members to find the equipment they need.▶ Please honor the 30 minute limit for cardio machines while others are waiting. If you want a longer cardio workout, then I encourage you to avoid the Fitness Center during peak hours (usually 7:30 AM to 11:30 AM.)

F I T N E S S

Fit&Trim ▶ Please dress appropriately. Shirts and athletic shoes must be worn at all times. Open-toed shoes, golf shoes and spikes are not permitted.▶ Please avoid wearing perfume and cologne. Some people are very sensitive to scent and get headaches or migraines from the chemicals.▶ Members are responsible for their guests. ALL guests must sign in and present their guest card prior to exercising…there are no exceptions. For the seasonal months of November 1 to April 30, guests may not use the Fitness Center between 6:00 AM and 11:00 AM, unless they are a guest of a single member or staying at the Lodge. Single members are entitled to one guest with no time restrictions.▶ Pool chaises and chairs: The hours of the pool are from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Chaises and chairs are available on a first come, first served basis and may not be reserved. You may not place personal items on the chaises or chairs and then leave the pool area. In this case, personal items will be removed and placed in the Pool Hut. Tags will be placed on the chaises and chairs at lunch time by the Pool Attendants to give the members and guests one hour to eat.▶ Pool towels: Towels are provided free of charge for those members and guests who are staying in the pool area. These towels must be turned in directly to the Pool Attendant by 5:00 PM or there will be a $15.00 charge per towel. The staff and I thank you in advance for following these rules and procedures, and as always we are here to make your experience, and those around you, the very best through our “Dedication to Excellence”.

With all the technological advances in today’s age, we have all the information we need at our fingertips with our smart devices. But, could these devices actually be hurting us?

According to many health professionals, the increased use of cell phones and smart devices is also causing poor posture and leading to pain in the neck and spine.

According to a study performed by Dr. Kenneth K. Hansraj, MD, chief of spine surgery at New York Spine Surgery & Rehabilitative Medicine, “tech neck” is a real thing. Dr. Hansraj says that “When your spine is in neutral position, the head weighs about 10-12 pounds. At 15 degrees [forward], the neck weighs 27 pounds. At 45 degrees, it weighs 49 pounds, and at 60 degrees, it’s 60 pounds.”

That’s 60 pounds of weight that is stressed on muscles and nerves that are meant to handle 10-12 pounds of stress, and that much load can do a lot of damage over time.

Not only is this poor posture leading to spine issues in the neck, but studies are finding that it is leading to premature wrinkling in the front of the neck. Thinking of wrinkles used to begin in middle to late age but is now being seen in the younger generations.

Could you have “TECH NECK”? By Kayla S. Wintermute, PTA

Although poor posture has always been an issue secondary to occupation, habit, and even genetics, it is significantly increasing in severity and should be addressed. Poor posture can be reversed through specific exercises.

A Physical Therapist can evaluate your posture and create an exercise program specific to reducing your neck pain and improving your posture.

Call Dr. Michael T. Frasso at On-Site Physical Therapy in the Fitness Center at Hunters Run today to get started! Most major insurance accepted as full or partial payment with a prescription from your doctor.

20 NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2017 Hunters Run Country Club

ASSIGNMENT: HUNTERS RUNWe are looking for a few members who can write, have ideas

for new features, or have other skills to help the Hunters Run

Magazine highlight everything that is going on at our very

active club. If this invitation fits your background and

interests, please respond

to [email protected].

The Hunters Run Special Interest Clubs Program, with the support of Ricardo Terry, Club Coordinator, continues to grow and grow. To date, there are more than 25 clubs which are meeting the special interests of Hunters Run members.

Though many of these clubs took a break during the off-season, several remained active. For example,

• On Tuesdays in the Men’s Card Room at 4:15PM, Sue Chestler facilitated the Summer Sketching & Drawing Club.

• Barry Levy planned for future meetings for the Wine Tasting Club.

• The Singles Social Club, led by Jan Steinberg, met the last Wednesday of every month at 4:15PM in the Men’s Card Room.

• The Summer Yiddish Club met monthly, under the leadership of Rhoda Shalom, and enjoyed an hour of conversation—in Yiddish, of course.

These clubs will continue their programs for the rest of the year, and once November 1st rolls around, many more clubs, such as Current Events, Drama, French Conversation, Women’s Cycling Club, Book Clubs, and Culture Clubs, will restart. In addition, new clubs are in the works like a Personal Finance Club and a Long Island Club. Be sure to check the weekly flyer—News From the Special Interest Clubs—for details. You can find this flyer in the Media Center and online.

If you are interested in joining a book club and/or a culture club, an organization meeting will be held shortly. If you are looking for a steady canasta, mah jongg, or poker game, be sure to see Ricardo. He will give you a list of Hunters Run members to contact—members who also want to play on a regular basis.

What’s unique about Special Interest Clubs? They are member-run and member-initiated, and membership is open to all. So take advantage and attend a meeting of a club of your choice.

Have an idea for a new club? Wonderful! Call Ricardo Terry for support in getting it started!

By Doris Hirschhorn The Story of HunterPerhaps you’ve seen him perched in the Golf Office – or heard him singing sweetly on one of his regular visits to our chief operating officer Mary Watkins. But do you know the story behind the Club Cockatiel?

Let’s go back four summers. Crews were working on the Clubhouse renovations near the North Parking Lot, when this tiny cockatiel flew in to the construction zone and landed on a worker’s shoulder. The worker tried repeatedly to place the bird safely in a tree, but each time it flew back to the same person – same shoulder! Perplexed, the worker brought the bird to Mary Watkins’ office.

Determined not to leave the bird stranded, Mary sent emails to the membership – complete with the bird’s picture – trying to find his owner. Flyers were posted in neighboring communities – but no one claimed him. So, the Club did. Now named “Hunter” after his adoptive home, he resides with Golf Operations Manager Gary Tschaepe – in a cage provided by Mary.

“I joked with (then Club President) Carl Sloan that the Clubhouse renovation project should include an aviary for Hunter in the main lobby,” said Gary. “But I’ve grown quite attached to him. He makes a great roommate. He dances to Michael Jackson tunes and loves watching football!” But what he enjoys the most is a game I call “musical copycat.” Hunter will whistle a five-or-six note tune – then wait for me to repeat it!”

Hunter gets regular veterinary check-ups – where we learned he is a healthy, male Australian Cockatiel, about six years old. In captivity, cockatiels can live to be 20-25 years old!

Perhaps an aviary’s not a bad idea!

Hunter will continue his visits to the Club during the season. Feel free to stop by and say Hello. He may even challenge YOU to a game of musical copycat!

@C O M M U N I C A T I O N S

I hope you have noticed the personalized welcome on each club email — it is a nice touch put in place by our staff! But if you are not getting club emails and want to do so, please send your name and email address to [email protected]. I hope you also have noticed the personalized welcome when you log in to our new website. And, of course , if you are having a login challenge, please email also [email protected].

Because there is so much happening at our club, we have flyers, flyers and more flyers. Yes, you can still find flyers in the Media Center to read there and/or take a copy with you! And, we display the flyers in our club emails, on our six digital signage units (can you identify their locations?), through our community TV Channels and on our website home page and departmental pages. They are embedded also in our online calendar, where they remain through the day of the event. So, if you are dressing for an event and have forgotten the dress code, you can click on the online

By Lew Gedansky, Chair

calendar to re-read the flyer. Of course, you can still telephone the main desk of our Clubhouse to ask about the dress code.

And, speaking of the online calendar, take a look if you have not already done so. Wow, we really do have a lot of stuff going on at Hunters Run and more things get added to the calendar or adjusted on the calendar throughout the year. If you make extensive use of the just published printed calendar, please be sure to confirm things with the online calendar.

Rather than wait to do something specific through the website, take the time now to become familiar with it. And, when you plan to have dinner at Il Cacciatore or another one of our restaurants, use our website’s online dining reservation feature. By doing so, you can see quickly what dining times are available for the night you want to eat there.

With the new website, it is nice to be able to register online for an upcoming golf tournament and get a confirming email. If you forget and try to register again, the online system politely reminds you that you are registered already. The same online system capabilities exist for events involving our racquet sports. And yes, you can still fill out a tournament registration form and give it to our staff in the golf or tennis shops.

TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION PROGRAM For those of us for whom technology remains an ongoing challenge, the Hunters Run Technology Education Program will have three 7:30PM evening presentations on December 6th, January 10th and February 7th along with three 8:30AM morning help sessions on December 8th, January 19th and February 16th. Of course, each session will be announced in advance via a club flyer. But, save the dates.

With the implementation of digital signage and the new website, it is time to think about the next big technology project. If you have an idea or other suggestions and/or questions about technology used at Hunters Run, send an email to (yes, you guessed it,) [email protected] (or to me at [email protected].)

HUNTERS RUN

VETERANS

On Saturday, November 11, Hunters Run will be honoring our veterans in a special program at 3:00 PM in the Main Dining Room. The opening flag ceremony will be led by combat veterans from the Palm Beach County VET CENTER.

VET CENTERS, located all over the country, were established to help combat veterans readjust to civilian life. In 2015, the centers served over 200,000 combat veterans, service members, and military families. In Palm Beach County alone, there are about 300 vets who regularly visit the center. Most of these are Vietnam veterans who are still suffering from post traumatic syndrome (PTSD). These services are free to vets and their families. The centers are under the auspices of the Department of Veterans Affairs. There is no charge to members.

Claire Eberhart, Veterans Outreach Specialist of the Palm Beach County VET CENTER, will be talking about the services provided at VET CENTERS around the country. Our local VET CENTER is located at 4996 10th Ave North, Suite 6, Greenacres, FL 33463. Phone: 561-422-1201 or 561-422-1201

These centers are well funded, but they are looking for volunteers to provide ideas and activities that will acknowledge that these vets are appreciated. Roger Franklin, a Hunters Run member, and Graham Cordrey, our director of activities, are organizing a planning committee to help coordinate activities and volunteers. Hunters Run is committed to an active outreach to this group.

22 NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2017 Hunters Run Country Club

By Carl R. Sloan, Chair

Although Governmental Relations is one of the smallest committees, it is very important. Its function is to interface with the various governmental agencies. In mid-October we met with Palm Beach County Commissioner Steven Abrams (R), who represents us on the Palm Beach County Commission, District 4. Commissioner Abrams was given a tour of Hunters Run and then enjoyed lunch with Chief Operating Officer Mary Watkins.

Over the last few months the committee also met with and hosted State Senator Jeff Clemens (D). Sen. Clemens represents us in the 31st Senatorial District. We also hosted State Representative Emily Slosberg (D). She represents us in the 91st House District. Both toured our facilities and were very impressed with our property.

GOVERNMENTAL RELATIONS COMMITTEE

The reason we invite these elected officials to Hunters Run is so that when they make decisions in West Palm Beach or Tallahassee, it puts a face to such decisions. All promised to keep us advised if there is any new legislation that might affect Hunters Run. We also asked both of the state elected officials to look at the impractical current statute that deals with grievances.

This Committee had previously met with Boynton Beach City Mayor Steven Grant and City Councilman (and Vice Mayor) Justin Katz. Both toured our facilities and enjoyed lunch with us. We continue to stay in touch with them because decisions they make might affect Hunters Run. A member of our Committee, Judi Lyman, attends most of the City Council meetings so that we are always up to date on what is occurring in the City that might impact us.

HIRING AN UNLICENSED CONTRACTOR TO SAVE A FEW DOLLARS-IS THIS REALLY A GOOD IDEA?

I think we’ve all heard this dialogue at one point or another in our life from either a neighbor or a family member, “I have this guy who does really good work.” Does he have a license? “No but he’s cheap!”

Are you putting yourself at risk financially in hiring an unlicensed contractor? Absolutely!

Whether you are adding a room addition or just replacing a window screen, hiring an unlicensed contractor could subject you to medical expenses if the unlicensed contractor is injured, a lawsuit--- and the possibility of an increase in your insurance policy. If the unlicensed contractor injures your neighbor by leaving construction material lying around, or accidently damages your neighbor’s home, you can be held personally liable for damages or injuries. Usually, a homeowner’s insurance policy will exclude claims if you use an unlicensed professional. Unlicensed contractors can ignore building codes, and will surely state “you do not need to get a permit.” Unlicensed contractors may be unreliable or may use inferior material and perform the work in an unprofessional fashion.

Did you know that you could also be at risk for aiding and abetting unlicensed contracting and could incur fines of up to $5,000 from the City of Boynton Beach!

Although it seems like I’m trying to scare you, in reality I just want you to understand the potential pitfalls of what hiring an unlicensed contractor could bring.

The majority of home improvement jobs bring a lot of joy after they are completed when you choose a contractor carefully.

A licensed contractor is educated in his profession, follows the required construction standards, building codes, permits and will have the proper contractor’s license and insurance.

It is so important that you thoroughly investigate any contractor that will perform work in your home. The saying, “better safe than sorry,” really does apply.

Always protect yourself before signing any contract. Investigate the contractor you are thinking of hiring. You can visit (www.myflorida.com) to confirm that your contractor has the proper state license. You can visit (www.sunbiz.org) to see if your contractor has been in business for a significant amount of time. Request a Certificate of Insurance for liability and worker’s compensation and make sure it is in his company’s name.

Finally, CMO, your Property Management Company, has experienced, licensed professionals that can help you with your home improvement needs.
