Principal’s Comments

Footy Day Next Monday we have our footy lunch. We will also make it footy dress day for a gold coin donation. These funds will be put towards supporting our World Vision child.

3 /4 Performance Classes are spending much time in practice as they gear up for the 2 big nights on Monday 29th and Tuesday 30th August at the Rowville SC auditorium. This should be a great event.

Playground The rubber has been laid due to finally having some rain free days. It is just being given time to cure and we hope the equipment will be operational shortly.

Year 3 Tables We’ve had another big week on the times tables front with a number of our students performing brilliantly. 5’s in under 15 seconds were achieved by Keeley, Lauren, Julian, Kyle, Luke, Yara, Regan and Bradley in 3S, Annabelle and Sam in 3JC, Lachlan, Jaylen and John in 3 /4, and Leona and Sam in 3C.

We also commenced our 3’s and Caitlyn and Krispin in 3 /4, Kira, Allison, Josh, Tanner, Rylan and Ozcan in 3JC and Ethan in 3S were the “legends” in great times.

Woolies / Coles The voucher “fundraisers” from both companies are in full swing. We do have boxes in

the foyer for receipts and I note that many people have sent along some already, which

is superb. This is a great opportunity to tap into friends and family who may be happy to

support our school. I believe there is a Karoo box at the Stud Park Woolworths & there

is double points this week in that chain of stores.

Prep Rabbits Over past weeks the preps have had a mother rabbit and her babies in their classrooms. The students have enjoyed seeing the transformation from hairless, blind little things to rapidly growing cute creatures. We have them for next week as well.

Rebel There is a voucher available at the office that some people may like to take advantage

of if you were going to be shopping at Rebel this month. Offer valid until 31/08/11.

Molly On the weekend Molly in 6P had a very nasty bike accident at the BMX track which has resulted in her breaking both wrists, an elbow and sustaining facial injuries. This has required time in hospital and operations and could result in being in plaster for 6 months. Several parents have got together to organise a raffle to raise funds so that a self

standing touch screen can be purchased onto which can be downloaded books and

music. Tickets are $1 each and can be obtained from the Miss Poole’s Year 6 students.

The prize has lots of goodies in it including soaps, chocolates, lollies, golf balls, a yo-yo

and skipping ropes. We will draw the raffle on Monday 15th at assembly.

Junior School Council—Easter Egg Raffle A wonderful range of eggs and items were wrapped by a big team of parent helpers and Class Representatives. It was a fantastic effort and lots of prizes were drawn at the Twilight Sports and over $1900 was raised. Thank you to all for your generous support with eggs and buying tickets.

Road Safety Please remind your children to use the school crossings. The traffic officers have reported some very dangerous crossings of Karoo Road by children and parents. Also the Staff Car Park is not to be used by parents as it is dangerous to be dropping children there before and after school. Some families access the school through the carpark, for safety reasons please use the allocated gates. The gate on the reserve is now open to assist access. Road safety is a priority around schools. Please keep our children safe.

Cross Country Last Thursday started beautifully with lots of fabulous support for setting up the Cross Country. The students were very excited and the classes were called out in levels and enjoyed the chance to rest and cheer while sitting on the reserve under the shade of the big trees with a lovely breeze. The Cross Country started at 11.30am with the Year 6s then the Year 5s running the 2 kilometres and each of them striving for a place or for their personal best. At 12.30pm the Year 5s boys were finishing and some of the Year 5s girls were just completing their third lap. By this stage the temperature had risen to the 30s, the children were looking very hot and we postponed the 10 year old, 9 year old and 8 year old events until Tuesday of this week. Sharon Lee did a wonderful job in re-engineering the track and had a fabulous team of helpers at school at 7.45am to assist with setting up again! Tuesday was a perfect day to finish the event. We give our sincere thanks to all of those people who assisted over both of the days and contributed to the children having the opportunity to do their best.

No Assembly on Thursday. School Dismissal on Thursday 24th March is 2.30pm

Enjoy a safe and happy Easter. Irene Harding - Principal

OFFICE NEWS…

Chicken Pox We have had 2 cases of chicken pox reported to the office during the last week. A reminder that if you child is unwell during school time, the best place for them is at home and if you have any concerns consult your medical practitioner.

Thank you, Office Staff

We will be selling icy poles for $1:00 after school in the

Courtyard. The money will go towards the Year 6 Graduation.

So please help support the Year 6s in their final year of

primary school.

Thank you! Lilian and Madison on behalf of Year 6 students.

This is a program developed by the Education Department to enhance the learning opportunities of higher ability students throughout Victoria.

Fairhills High School is the accredited SEAL school for the Knox and Maroondah areas. There are 40 other accredited SEAL schools in the rest of the state.

Interested Grade 6 students make application to Fairhills High School which conducts a selection process in May each year.

Students selected for the program are placed in a SEAL class at Fairhills where they complete the Years 7-10 curriculum at a faster rate and in greater depth taking three rather than four years. They then complete their VCE over three years instead of two and are able to study a wider range of VCE subjects and in some cases include a University subject all of which leads to higher university entrance ATAR scores.

If your Grade 6 student is considered to be achieving highly in their class and you are interested in the SEAL program, you can obtain an information pack including an application form on request to your primary school principal.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND SPORTS NEWS

Karoo Cross Country The Karoo Cross Country was conducted last Thursday in warm conditions for the 12/13 and 11 year old students. This Tuesday, under much cooler conditions, the 10, 9 and 8 year old students had their events. With the emphasis on participation

and attempting to achieve your personal best, I saw many hot and tired but proud faces at the finish line last Thursday. On Tuesday the faces were no less tired, but were a little happier with the cooler weather on that day. All students received a well done ribbon for their efforts and a drink to rehydrate themselves from our drink dispensers at the finish line. A very big thank you must go to the many wonderful parents who gave up their time to help out around the course. Your assistance was greatly appreciated. A huge thank you to those parents who assisted on both days, and to Peta Alexander and the class reps who were also fantastic in securing helpers for both days that the cross country was on and I thank them very much for their help. Karoo teachers and staff also assisted with the successful running of the event. The school and house captains showed wonderful leadership and enthusiasm on the day, assisting with the setting out and packing up of the course, hand stamping, presentation of ribbons and dispensing of the water at the finish line. The 1st-10th

results for each age and gender group are published below. First – third place getters will receive a medal and certificate. Fourth – tenth place getters will receive a certificate and ribbon for their fine efforts. The medals and certificates will be presented at a whole school assembly in Term 2, (not week 1 as I will be on camp).

District Cross Country The Karoo Cross Country Team, which will represent our school at the District Cross Country, will be selected early in Term 2. Up to 10 runners in each age group, for both boys and girls can be selected. The results of the Karoo Cross Country and other

Phys. Ed. running assessments are used to select the team. Students who were injured or absent for the Karoo Cross Country will also be considered. Year 4s who ran in the 9 year old races at our cross country will come under consideration for the 9/10 year old team. District Cross Country Day is Friday May 6th at Jell’s Park.

Swimming Accomplishments The 23 students who were members of our District Swimming Team, received their recognition certificates at assembly this week. We were very proud of the

efforts and achievements of all the students who contributed to the team’s 4th placing out of the 8 schools competing. Summer M 5W and Will V 4M deserve extra recognition for their success at the Division competition and subsequent participation at the Region Swimming competition. They both swam in 5 races at our district event, including 2 butterfly races – which is a huge effort. Well done Summer and Will! Here is a photo of the successful pair with their certificates.
