Principal’s Comments

Footy Day Next Monday we have our footy lunch. We will also make it footy dress day for a gold coin donation. These funds will be put towards supporting our World Vision child.

3 /4 Performance Classes are spending much time in practice as they gear up for the 2 big nights on Monday 29th and Tuesday 30th August at the Rowville SC auditorium. This should be a great event.

Playground The rubber has been laid due to finally having some rain free days. It is just being given time to cure and we hope the equipment will be operational shortly.

Year 3 Tables We’ve had another big week on the times tables front with a number of our students performing brilliantly. 5’s in under 15 seconds were achieved by Keeley, Lauren, Julian, Kyle, Luke, Yara, Regan and Bradley in 3S, Annabelle and Sam in 3JC, Lachlan, Jaylen and John in 3 /4, and Leona and Sam in 3C.

We also commenced our 3’s and Caitlyn and Krispin in 3 /4, Kira, Allison, Josh, Tanner, Rylan and Ozcan in 3JC and Ethan in 3S were the “legends” in great times.

Woolies / Coles The voucher “fundraisers” from both companies are in full swing. We do have

boxes in the foyer for receipts and I note that many people have sent along

some already, which is superb. This is a great opportunity to tap into friends and

family who may be happy to support our school. I believe there is a Karoo box at

the Stud Park Woolworths & there is double points this week in that chain of

stores.

Prep Rabbits Over past weeks the preps have had a mother rabbit and her babies in their classrooms. The students have enjoyed seeing the transformation from hairless, blind little things to rapidly growing cute creatures. We have them for next week as well.

Rebel There is a voucher available at the office that some people may like to take

advantage of if you were going to be shopping at Rebel this month. Offer valid

until 31/08/11.

Molly On the weekend Molly in 6P had a very nasty bike accident at the BMX track which has resulted in her breaking both wrists, an elbow and sustaining facial injuries. This has required time in hospital and operations and could result in being in plaster for 6 months. Several parents have got together to organise a raffle to raise funds so that a

self standing touch screen can be purchased onto which can be downloaded

STATE SCHOOLS SPECTACULAR On 19th October registration opens for students interested in auditioning for the 2016 main cast….singers, dancers, gymnasts, cheerleaders, roller skaters or rappers. Go to www.education.vic.gov.au/spectacular

Well done to our 2015 Dancers and also to Kara O (5M) who shone as a roller skater. Yet another highlight was enjoying the lead singer performance of former student and school captain Maddie Andreopoulos.

The Spectacular is a Department of Education initiative to showcase the Performing Arts and is now held annually at Hisense Arena. It is the largest live performance event in Australia. Again in 2016 twenty of our Year 5 students will be involved in the Massed Dance…..further information to follow.

DANDENONG RANGES MUSIC COUNCIL 2016 YOUTH MUSIC AWARD I would also encourage our instrumental and singing enthusiasts to apply for the Bill Borthwick Award. Entry requirement is 18 months learning or AMEB 2 or equivalent. First prize is $300. Entry forms and further information [email protected]

MUSICAL FUTURES As you pass the Music Room you will see (and hear!) we now have enough guitars for all Year 3-6 students to use in their weekly lesson. Musical Futures is another Department of Education initiative and promotes instrumental music and children feeling engaged with music and having opportunities to play as part of a group. I am enjoying the Musical Futures professional development workshops, collegiate co-operation with local schools and adding and using the instruments to our lessons. Keyboard and drumming will also be part of Year 3-6 lessons.

Adrian Ward

Year 5 Artist in Residence

Self Portraiture Program

We began with perspective drawing.

At the beginning of the term, the Year 5 students participated in an Artist in Residence program with an artist called Adrian Ward. Each

week they developed their skills and knowledge to create an amazing self-portraiture artwork. Even Mrs. Harding commented that the

sculptures look like work of secondary students.

A selection of these artworks will be on display at the Zart Art Student Gallery at Unit 4, 41 Lexton Road, Box Hill North during Term 4

2015 and Term 1 2016. Their open night is 3rd December. A selection will also be entered into the Scoresby Secondary College Arts and

Technology Showcase Competition.

Also in Term 4 on November 12, we will have an all school Art Expo where we will showcase the work done this term by Year 5 along with

at least one artwork from every other child in the school. In the meantime come and admire their sculptures in the school foyer.

I am so very proud of all my Year 5 students and what they have created. It was everything I thought they could do and more. Here are

some of their reflections:

“At the start of Term 3, a sculptor, Adrian, came in to teach and help the Year 5s make a sculpture of our own heads. It’s called self-portraiture. Some people thought parts were tricky but others easy. We made the head in 3 layers – newspaper, tin foil and clay. I also really enjoyed making tools out of icy pole sticks. I bet all the Year 5’s enjoyed sculpting the faces and I hope we do something like this again.” - Indiana

“At the start of Term 3, we started sculpting our own heads in Art. We have had so much fun creating and learning about sculpturing from Adri-an. This has been a great experience for all of the Year 5 students.” - Cassidy

“I have really enjoyed Term 3 in Art. We have been sculpturing our own heads. We have used all different materials to make them. I enjoyed making the eyes and nose, especially poking a pencil up the hose to make nostrils! Making our heads has been great fun.” Sarah C.

“This term in Art, Adrian an artist, came and taught us about armature and sculpturing and we make a head sculpture. Thanks so much Adrian, It was awesome and one for the best artworks I’ve done. PS Thanks Miss Cunningham for organising this.” - David

“Wow! What an awesome experience. This term we worked with Adrian sculpting our faces. We used clay and created a masterpiece. Thank you Adrian for taking the time to teach us how to create a wonderful piece of art. What an eye opening experience I have had.” - Amaya

“At the start of this magnificent journey, sculpting our own heads in Art has been super exciting. Every Wednesday I am pumped to get out of bed and get to school because sculpting is so much fun. Every week I learn more and more things about sculpting. Adrian, the artist who is teaching us (Year 5’s) has helped us so much. This has been a once in a lifetime opportunity.” - Aimee

“This term, the Year 5’s sculpted their heads with Adrian. The sessions were short and hard, but Adrian helped us all along the way. It was a flawless experience.” - Aaliyah
