Karoo Calendar Principal’s Comments
Walkathon Thursday morning was ideal weather for the annual Karoo Walkathon. Students eagerly and energetically walked to raise funds for the school. Many thanks to our school community for supporting the students. The amount raised was $6200.00 well done and thank you. Each year I am grateful for the support of parents, carers and grandparents who assist by supervising at checkpoints along the walk. Your time is greatly appreciated, this allows the staff to walk with and supervise the students. Special thanks to Bec Young (Class Reps co-ordinator) for organising the checkpoints. Thanks to the following helpers who were at the checkpoints: Renee Martin, Liz Sharry, Bec Young, Diane Trevor, Jan and Ken North, Maria Simos, David Graham, Tammy Culpitt, Leanne Siwes, Nicole Michas, Antoinette Deriu and Kylie May. Thanks also to the office staff for their continued support too, lots of money to count and prizes to organise. Finally thanks to the staff and importantly the students who represented the school impeccably- upholding Karoo Values. I received positive feedback from the staff. Congratulations to all!
Students leaving Karoo We are currently working on class lists for next year and would appreciate notification in writing if your child/ children will not be returning to Karoo next year.
Final Assembly Our final assembly for the year will be on Thursday 21
st December at 9.00 a.m. At this assembly
we will be announcing our 2018 School Captains and presenting Karoo Citizenship Awards.
Assessment and Report Writing Staff are currently finalising student assessments in preparation for writing student reports. I have visited many classrooms recently and have seen students participating in a range of assessments. Staff use online assessment tools, teacher designed tasks, student work and teacher observations to ensure they make accurate decisions about your child’s levels of achievement. We anticipate reports will be sent home on Friday 15
th December. Thank you to the staff and students for their
great efforts.

Regrettably I am starting this edition of the newsletter with a disappointing message……. On Monday afternoon as I glanced out of my office window I saw a car travelling through the staff carpark at excessive speed; the school bell had just gone to end the day. As we all know many students are encouraged to walk to meet their parents at the car; this is great teaching them responsibility and independence. Students should be safe when they are at school; they should be aware of the dangers of vehicles but they should not have to manage the negligent parents who inappropriately use the staff carpark during school hours.
Vehicles with a Disabled sticker are the ONLY parent vehicles permitted in the staff car park.
Please consider all Karoo students and do not drive through or park in the staff car park.
I would appreciate the school community’s support to ensure our students are safe.
VISITORS TO THE SCHOOL
All visitors to the school must sign in and out at the office, and collect a green visitor’s badge. These badges help the students and staff identify you as an ‘authorised visitor’. Please remember to return the badge when you sign out.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Do you know the difference between a Welcome to Country and an Acknowledgement to Country? This is what Ryan and Thulshi were asked when they attended a Cultural Inclusion and Understanding session run by the Department of Education. There is an initiative for schools to be more inclusive and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their culture. This includes using the Acknowledgement of Country or Welcome to Country (where appropriate) at assemblies, the display of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags, celebrating Aboriginal Culture as well as having accessible dreaming stories (which can be found in our Library). Ryan and Thushi were excellent ambassadors for the school and did a wonderful presentation of their Acknowledgement to Country and proudly collected our set of flags to be displayed.

Aboriginal and Torres Islander Inclusion and Understanding
On Monday 13th October we went to the Regional Office where we learnt about Aboriginal Inclusion and the different tribes. We also learnt how to make our school more welcome to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. We learnt about the different names for areas such as Koori and that we live on Wurundjeri Land. We wrote an Acknowledgement to Country that will be read at each assembly. An Acknowledgement to Country is when someone who is not Aboriginal pays respect to the traditional owners of the land and their Elders past and present. The Acknowledgement to Country is said at the opening of a meeting or assembly. By Ryan (5J) and Thulshi (5R).

PE & SPORTS NEWS Jasmine and Harrison go to State Athletics Carnival
On Monday 30
th October, Jasmine H (5J) and Harrison C (4RD) competed in the State Athletics competition at Lakeside Stadium. Both
Harrison (200 metres) and Jasmine (High Jump) had successfully qualified to compete by finishing in the top 2 in the District, Division and Regional Athletics events. It was tough competition with many excellent athletes competing from all around Victoria. In her High Jump event that was made more difficult by rain, Jasmine jumped 1.28 metres coming 5
th overall. In his 200 metre event Harrison ran an
impressive time of 30.39 seconds coming 5th in his heat and missing the final by 0.02 seconds.
