Footy News
THANK YOU TO OUR VOLUNTEERS WHAT a wonderful morning we had on Sunday when our volunteers received a big pat
on the back in terms of a breakfast at the newly refurbished Cleveland Sharks Sports
Club.
There were almost 30 volunteers present
at the breakfast which was organised as a
big thank-you to all concerned for their
efforts during last year and in anticipation
of continued service for 2018.
The club’s Business Manager, Maree Thomson, welcomed the group and thanked all of
them for their unstinting efforts.
From selling raffle tickets, to organising and calling bingo, to running match day
functions to manning the barbecue and numerous other tasks the volunteers are an inte-
gral part of the football club.
Maree thanked everyone for their efforts and explained how they were the lifeblood of
the organisation.
The club has more volunteers and operates more fundraisers than any other in the
NEAFL.
“You are the people that help to keep this club afloat and your efforts are very much
appreciated,” Maree told the gathering.
Everyone who attended enjoyed the breakfast.
The Crackerjack Café proved to be a wonderful
venue and the food and service was outstanding.
Thank you to all our sponsors. Please support the businesses who support us.
KJ’S RUNNING HOT AND RARING TO GO Report: JEFF STEPHENSON
KAILEM Baker has played in premierships in Tasmania – including at the highest
level – and while they’re great, he ranks one significant match last season as the best
he’s ever played in.
It was for the Rio Tinto Cup, which was played at the MCG, before the huge
Dreamtime at the G match between Richmond and Essendon in front of more than
60,000 fans and in which he produced one of the best games of his career.
The match brought together some of the most exciting indigenous players Australia-
wide and Kailem’s team coached by former North Melbourne player Matthew
Campbell won convincingly against an opposition team coached by our own Peter
Yagmoor (ex-Collingwood).
Kailem – or KJ as he is more widely known – kicked a couple of goals in the match
and generally burnt up the MCG turf in what he described as having “a day out”.
It was a result of that and some consistent performances with North Launceston in the
Tasmanian Football League that sparked the interest of Bombers’ scouts and led to
him making the transition from the cold climes of Tassie to the heat and humidity of
Queensland.
“Yep, it was challenging, that’s for sure,” KJ said, referring to the dramatic change of
climate. “Doing the pre-season in the heat after Tasmania was a real shock to they
system and the humidity was really hard to overcome and to adapt to, but I eventually
got used to it.
“Fitness is the big key to my game.”
“I’ve got to say the pre-season has been really good and my body’s in great shape and
I’m feeling good to go.”
The speedy midfielder has a fantastic resume in his six years at senior level in Tassie
since making his debut as a 16-year-old with Western Storm.
He played in back-to-back premierships with South Launceston in the NTFA in
2014-15, basically missed 2016 and then came back last year with North Launceston
in the Tasmanian State League and snared another flag with the Bombers.
The club was coached by Tom Couch, son of the former Geelong legend and
Brownlow Medallist Paul Couch, who died while cycling in 2016.
“Tom had a massive influence on my game,” KJ said.
He didn’t have to think too hard about joining Redland Bombers this season as he
struck a great relationship with Peter Yagmoor following the indigenous match and
that played a major role in his decision.
KJ has been buoyed by the spirit and character of the playing group and declared:
“We’re keen and ready to go”.
He’s going to prove a great acquisition to the club.
After all, three premierships in four years in Tasmania and success at the MCG
suggests he brings with him that winning feeling.
Guess what?
There is nothing at all wrong with that – Go KJ and Go Bombers! 2

NEW BOY BROCK’S READY TO ROCK AND ROLL Report: JEFF STEPHENSON
HE’S only young, but it’s fair to say Brock Aston will have a solid understanding of
what’s in store for him when he lines up with Redland as a player at NEAFL level.
Brock, 18, has had a couple of years with the Brisbane Lions Academy where he
occasionally came under the guidance of Bombers’ coach Leigh Harding.
The pair re-united last season when Brock played one match with Redland and now,
with the 2018 season soon to embark he’s back under Leigh’s coaching - this time
as a full-on, ready-to-go, fully fledged Bomber, keen to show Leigh and everyone
else at the club the qualities of which he is capable.
Brock says the Lions’ NEAFL coach Shane Woewodin and Leigh helped imbue
in him a sense of confidence when he was at the academy.
“They believed in me; they gave me a lot of tips,” the youngster said.
Since rocking up for the pre-season Brock has fitted into the Bombers’ group particularly well. It’s been tough, for sure,
but he was prepared for that and took the work – particularly the emphasis on running – in his stride.
“I’ve enjoyed it heaps. “It’s been a lot more fun than I thought and the coaches have been great.”
His one and only game with Redland was in the last match of the season when Sydney University wore down the
Bombers’ in a relentless clash at Scottsdale Park. Like the rest of the group he’ll be working overtime to ensure those
close games in the coming season finish on the right side of the ledger. “There’s already been talk within the group
about being harder on ourselves in the crunch games.
“From what I’ve heard we’d go missing in patches and it always proved costly. “We’ll be aiming to turn that around.
“We’ll be looking to grab plenty more wins this season and play in finals – that’s the go.”
Brock started his career with Coolaroo as a junior in the Darling Downs and then moved with his family to Brisbane
where he aligned himself with Wests. From there he graduated to the Lions Academy and is now a full-fledged
Redland Bomber.
He played “down back” in his one appearance last season and although he’d never played much there before acquitted
himself reasonably well. “I got a few kicks”.
Now he’ll play where the coach says he’ll play. Well, of course he will – they know each other too well.
Thank you to our Gold Sponsor Capalaba & Mt Gravatt Volkswagen,
Brock and KJ are employed by Duncan Cooper and are now part of
the team at Mt Gravatt.
But wait, there’s more…..
We are loving this Amarok supplied by Duncan and the team at
Volkswagen. The Amarok certainly makes moving the team and all
the gear for training and games, very easy.
The Redland Football Club is looking good off the field, that’s for sure.
Bring on 2018 season—on field!
Thank you to all our sponsors. Please support the businesses who support us.
THANK YOU
PAM AND TOBY
Toby’s involvement spans 42
years and Pam is not far behind
having operated the club Bingo
for 40 successive years raising
countless thousands of dollars
along the way and helping turn
the football club into the force it
is today.
TOBYS’ OUR MAN FOR ALL SEASONS Report: JEFF STEPHENSON
IT can take one tiny moment or one single act to inspire a person to “get involved” in
an organisation – whether it be of a business type, a sporting group or some other
community institution.
Such was the case for Redland Football Club president, Colin Tobiasen, who has
become something of a “local hero” not only with the Bombers and the Sharks as we
were previously known, but also in terms of Australian football in general in South
Eastern Queensland.
Known universally as “Toby” the affable figurehead of the Bombers thrives on his
involvement, which started way back in 1976 as a junior coach and continues today
where his role at the helm is rarely challenged and always universally supported.
With wife Pam, the couple embody the spirit of our community-based club. They are
hard-working, giving of their all and the Bombers are forever in their debt for the time
and commitment they supply.
Toby’s involvement spans 42 years and Pam is not far behind having operated the club
Bingo for 40 successive years raising countless thousands of dollars along the way and
helping turn the football club into the force it is today. We digress however.
What was that single act – that one moment that flicked the switch in Toby’s persona
and inspired his longevity as an administrator?
He’d played footy himself at Coorparoo and having one daughter whose sporting
prowess belonged to the softball arena, Toby distanced himself from the oval ball
game following his retirement.
“But there was this kid who lived in our street and played with the Redland juniors.
“He knew I’d played at Coorparoo and because his team had something like five
coaches in that one year he kept asking me to come and coach them.
“Well, I thought about it for a while and then decided “why not”. So, the next year,
after having settled into a new family home in Victoria Point, Toby ventured down to
watch a few games and “got the taste for it.”
There he was coaching the Under 15s knowing nought about how this one step would
lead to a giant leap for the Tobiasen family. He knows now. Five years as president
from 1977-82 in his first stint and he’s now into his 13th unbroken stint since
re-assuming the mantle in 2006.
That’s a marvellous total of 18 years as the Bombers/Sharks supremo and while there
have been some hairy moments along the way the good ship Redland Bombers is
sailing an even keel having been steered through some particularly rough and
previously unchartered waters.
Oh, we should also mention the seven years Toby served as president of the SQAFA
wedged between his two terms as the Redland boss. He’d been the club delegate before
then and agreed to several overtures from the governing body to lend his undisputed
leadership skills to the Association.
“I still maintained my interest in the Sharks, but most of my efforts were directed to
the overall concept of growing football in the State,” Toby said. That led to life
membership of SQAFA to add to a similar gong he and Pam already had at club level.
There’s been some interesting times along the way and plenty of ebbs and flows.
4
5
Like the time in the early 2000s when the committee of the day sacked coach Dion Scott and, in turn, was then sacked
by the Sports Club. It was an upheaval of the highest order.
“Ken Costello and I came in and were appointed to the committee and basically started afresh. “There were plenty of
pieces to pick up, I can assure you. After having experienced success with premierships in 1998-99 in QAFL first
Division, the club was elevated to State League and then in 2012 came the invitation to participate in the new North
Eastern AFL embracing AFL reserves teams – Brisbane Lions, Gold Coast Suns, Sydney Swans and GWS – as well as
teams from Sydney, Canberra and Northern Territory,
It initially operated as a two-conference competition until the system we play today was instituted in 2014. It’s been a
huge jump in standards, particularly coming up against those AFL clubs with sometimes as many as 20 listed players on
the field.
Toby has overseen the transformation stoically and while we are yet to meet with the ultimate success that is a
premiership, we’ve come along in leaps and bounds, considering some of the hidings metred out to us in the initial
stages. “We took up the challenge and while it’s been a struggle I think we’ve performed reasonably admirably.
“We’ve been lucky to have a hard-working people at the coalface like Maree as Business Manager and Marty in charge
of the footy side of things.
“They’re basically on the go 24/7 and we can thank them a great deal for where we are today.” Toby’s proud of the
number of Redland players who have gone on to the AFL via the draft.
HUNKINS’ WITH US FOR THE LONG HAUL
Harrison Hunkin
Report: JEFF STEPHENSON
PREMIER trucking company Hillcote Pty Ltd and its offshoot Yatala Truck Repairs run
by the Hunkin brothers Jon and Adrian have a strong connection with the Redland
Bombers.
Jon played with Redland and when his son Steven followed suit as a junior he took it
upon himself to take on a coaching role. The link goes back 30 years to when Jon started
his junior football and continues to this day with Hillcote and then Yatala Truck Repairs
forging partnerships as sponsors of the club.
“We’ve enjoyed a strong relationship and it’s good to be able to give something back,” Adrian said.
Adrian’s son Harrison is also a former Redlands player, progressing through the junior
ranks and advancing as far as the NEAFL. He left last year to pursue employment with
multi-platform magazine publisher, Bauer Media in Melbourne and joined fellow
Redlanders Phil Carse and Jordan Bain at Hampden league club Camperdown.
Harrison played eight games with Redland before moving down south. It’s little wonder
then that the Hunkin brothers maintained the relationship with the club where they are
now a much-appreciated Silver Sponsor.
Jon, Adrian and their wives and Jon’s son Andrew are all involved in the company.
“We used to maintain our own trucks and as the infrastructure was available to us
decided to start up Yatala Truck Repairs as an offshoot,” Adrian said. “It’s been pretty
busy.”
Both Jon and Adrian are prominent supporters of the Bombers during the season.
“We attend most of the matches at home. If Jon’s not there, then I’m sure to be and if I don’t go then he’s always there.
“It’s really good quality football and we enjoy both supporting and helping with our sponsorship.”
Last season Yatala Truck Repairs won the “100 Business Club” draw that enabled them to display their signage on the
electronic scoreboard.
Thank you to all our sponsors. Please support the businesses who support us.
Adrian & Janelle Hunkin
That will be the new, vibrant and enticing signage
that will command attention to all our supporters
and other visitors, when they attend matches and
training sessions for season 2018.
The man behind the sign is Jake Gundry, a
long-time supporter of the Bombers and whose
group of companies have been involved in club
and player sponsorship for nine years and who
has now assumed the mantle as the club’s
Platinum Sponsor for next season. Australian
Framing Solutions commands its position as the
leader in the supply and installation of steel wall
frames and trusses and has grown to become the
largest and most successful framing business in
Australia and continues its relationship with the
club.
“Something we’re very passionate about is
community involvement, particularly where kids
are concerned,” Jake said. “If we, in some way,
can make the community a better place and help
provide opportunities that will help keep kids off
the street, then that’s path we’ll take. “I’m a big
believer in providing opportunities. “Our
involvement with the football club is one small
way we can achieve that.” Coincidentally, the
Australian Framing Solutions general manager,
Leanne Butt, like Jake, is a Redlands local and she
has two boys playing for the junior football team.
But Why Scottsdale Park? Jake and his team
have been using the Scottsdale Construction
Systems proprietary frame design software and
machine technology to manufacture their steel
frames in Australia for 19 years and early in 2017
had an opportunity to acquire the New Zealand
based business.
After a short period of capital
raising Scottsdale
Construction Systems was purchased and in addi-
tion to his position at Australian Framing Solu-
tions, Jake assumed the Chief Executive role with
Scottsdale Construction Systems.
The past year has been spent mapping out sales
and financial and operational plans to further
plant their global footprint, which has them in 86
countries worldwide, with more than 700 steel
frame roll forming machines and design
technology being used.
But why Scottsdale Park? Well, Jake has been
a Redlands local for 17 years. His companies have
been contributors and sponsors in the Redlands of
sporting clubs and events, kindergartens, schools,
PFA’s as well as building-donated infrastructure at
local council-owned sporting grounds.
But he has never had an operational facility in the
Redlands. That is about to change. Jake’s Sales,
Marketing, technical support and Research and
Development team will relocate from New Zealand
and start operations in the Redlands from February
2018, just as soon as the right facility is found.
Because of the ongoing relationship with the
Redland Bombers, which is about to enter its
10th year, Jake has decided to further support the
club by taking the naming rights.
Thanks Jake, it’s been a great relationship – and
to all Bombers’ fans here’s a hearty invitation and a big welcome to Scottsdale Park.

ZAMBRERO SERVES UP A GOLD PLATED DISH Report: JEFF STEPHENSON
SHANE Muspratt recognises the value and the importance of community involvement
and it was for that reason that he thrust Zambrero into a liaison with the Redland
Bombers three years ago as a Gold Sponsor which continues today.
The former North Queensland Cowboys rugby league player – he also had one injury-
riddled season with Parramatta – is Queensland Area Developer for Zambrero and the
Victoria Point restaurant he guided to fruition three years ago is now “hitting its
straps”.
So much so that it was named the Zambrero Restaurant of the Year in 2017 at the
company’s National Conference in Sydney against a formidable field of 150
restaurants. “It was a huge feather in our cap,” Shane said.
When the Victoria Point Mexican-inspired restaurant opened Shane drew on his rugby
league career and his experience as a Zambrero operator in Mackay to get involved in
the community.
“Being new we understood the importance of being involved and we recognised
quickly the football club as being among the perfect partners for us. “It’s important
from both our points of view. “We were new to the area and we wanted to become
involved. “The restaurant is in a really good spot, but it takes time to get going.”
Shane paid tribute to his Victoria Point Operations Manager, Joel Casey, who oversees
a staff 15. “Joel is doing a great job for us and he’s got a great team working with him
who understand the importance of customer service.”
His busy schedule and coaching his two boys in junior rugby league doesn’t leave him
much time to get to see many Redland Bombers’ matches.
But he’s be hoping to get to Scottsdale Park a few times this upcoming season.
As a former rugby league player, he recognises AFL as a “very aerobic” game and one
that has wide appeal. Shane also played basketball at a high level as a junior
representing Queensland at Under 16s. He made his first-grade debut with the
Cowboys as a 19-year-old playing 58 games with the North Queensland club and a
further six with the Eels.
He saw the fresh, healthy ingredients and nutritional benefits associated with the
Zambrero menu as influences that attracted him to the company in the first instance.
“Healthy living is important to me, particularly in relation to sports, and this played a
big part in me coming on board,” Shane explained. “Taking on the Queensland Area
Development role for Zambrero with my business partner Shaun McCarthy has meant
a very busy few years for us.
“Before our State development role, we used the Zambrero brand as a platform to
become an individual business owner. “From here we have grown our company
restaurant structure to 12 restaurants internally, while developing and managing the
operational control and support of new and existing franchise restaurants across the
State.”
We at Redland Bombers wish Shane, Joel and
all the team at Zambrero, Victoria Point, all the
success in the world and thank them sincerely
for the continued support as a Gold Sponsor
with our club.

VICTORIA POINT SHARKS JAFC Report: by Matthew David Junior Football Operations Officer
Welcome back for another fantastic season with the Victoria Point
Sharks JAFC. So many exciting things to update you all on that
have happened over the past couple months!
Firstly, we’d like to welcome all our new players to our fantastic
club – we’ve had such a positive registration period which has seen old and new
faces return to already have 370 members on the books. This doesn’t include the 75
Auskickers that are currently plying their trade on a Friday afternoon which will take
our registration numbers to over 400 players for the first time in the clubs 52 year
history!
We’re also seeing a lot of people travel to play for our club. Our reach has gotten
further and further this year with members joining from Forest Lake, Springwood,
Wishart, Wynnum and more! It just goes to show the fantastic work Justin and the
committee are doing to create an inclusive and supportive club culture.
Last weekend the VPJAFC Youth Boys & Girls played an Intra-Club match at Griffith
Moorooka which was a great spectacle for all supporters. The day started off with our
U12’s, which was followed by our U14’s and then our U15G & U17G combined to play
each other with the day rounded out by the U16’s.
It was great to see all the support down at Alexander Park, Moorooka to kick start the
season in the right way!
The VPJAFC in partnership with the Redland Football Club and Victoria Point Sharks
Senior Football Club hosted a Trivia Night last month and it was great to see 200+
people in the room supporting our clubs. Everyone seemed to have a fun evening and
a big thanks has to go to Maree Thomson & Pauline Eadie in setting up what was a
great start to all our clubs seasons!
The club also rescheduled the RAW Challenge, its Pre-Season Bonding Camp, to
now be held on Sunday 18 March due to the wet weather South-East Queensland
experienced last weekend.
And a message from our Club President Justin Stone:- To see so many kids
running around with smiles on their faces is what kids sport is all about. Kids involved
in team sport, making friendships and having a world of fun.
Remember Attitude, Belief and Consistency is the message that our kids will be
hearing a lot. It's more than football.
Developing awesome young people through footy at the Sharks.
We are super proud of all of our junior stars.
See you on the sidelines.

The Victoria Point Sharks JAFC is proud to announce that Victoria Point Chiropractic has come on board to be the major sponsor for the VPJAFC over the course of the next three seasons.
Junior Football Operations Officer, Matthew David said “it’s fantastic to have such a community-minded sponsor on board that aligns with our values as a Football Club. John Worrall & the team at Victoria Point Chiropractic have been fully supportive of the direction the club is taking and we’re very excited to be working together over the next three years.
John has been a proud sponsor of the Redland Football Club (NEAFL) since 2010, and to now have someone who is so passionate about developing local young men and women into being the best they can be is something that really resonates with our values as a junior sporting organisation.”
Victoria Point Chiropractic Owner, John Worrall said “our organisations support for Junior AFL development was a progression of our commitment to the senior club and in a way is a big thank you to
the community of the Redlands who were so supportive of us 12 months ago when our practice was destroyed by fire. The community as a whole was very supportive of our staff and practitioners, and some of our earliest offers for assistance came from people within the football community.
The programs that Matt, Justin and the committee have put in place are wholly congruent with our ideals of helping people reach their potential and I look forward to our involvement at the junior level.”
VPJAFC President, Justin Stone, reverberated Matt’s comments by saying “the VPJAFC would like to welcome Victoria Point Chiropractic to the Junior Sharks community for the next three years and beyond. We thank them for their generous support and we look forward to building a strong relationship with them over the upcoming seasons.”
We would like to take this opportunity to thank John & the team at Victoria Point Chiropractic for their support of the VPJAFC.
