    HISTORY OF SIWES

    Commencement of SIWES in 1973

    Administration of SIWES by NUC in 1979

    Take Over of SIWES administration by the ITF in 1984.

    Review of Scheme by the Federal Governmentresulting in Decree 16 of August, 1985.

    All students enrolled in specialized Engineering,Technical Business, Applied Sciences and AppliedArts should have supervised industrial attachment aspart of their studies.

    OBJECTIVES OF SIWES

    The objectives of SIWES are:

    To provide an avenue for students in Institution ofHigher Learning to acquire industrial skills and

    experiences in their course of study

    To prepare students for the Working situation theyare to meet after graduation.

    To expose student to work methods andtechniques in handling equipment and machinery

    that may not be available in education institutions

    To provide students with an opportunity to apply theirknowledge in real work situation thereby bridging thegap between college work and actual practice

    To make the transition from school to the world ofwork easier and enhance students contacts for laterjob placement

    To enlist and strengthen employers involvement in theentire educational process and prepare students foremployment in Industry and Commerce.

    In order to achieve these stated objectives, the bodiesinvolved in the Scheme must play their respectiveroles accordingly.

    Supervising/Regulatory Agencies

    (NUC, NBTE,NCCE) Tertiary Institutions (Universities, Polytechnics,

    Colleges of Education)

    Students (Engineering, Science, Technology,NCE Technical)

    Provide adequate funds to the ITF, throughthe Federal Ministry of Commerce andIndustry

    Make policies to guide and regulate thescheme at the national level

    INDUSTRIAL TRAINING FUND

    Formulate policies and guidelines on SIWESfor distribution to all the SIWES participatingbodies

    Receive and process master and placementlist from the institutions and supervisingagencies

    To supervise and assess students

    performance on attachment To disburse allowance to students and their

    supervisors

    Regularly organize orientation programmes

    for students prior to their attachment

    Provide logistics and materials necessary foreffective administration of the Scheme, suchdocuments as ITF Form 8 and SPE 1 Forms.

    Vet and process students logbooks and ITFForm 8.

    THE INSTITUTIONS Establish SIWES coordinating Units in their

    institutions

    Appoint full-time Industrial Coordinators tooperate the Scheme at institutional level.

    Apply job specification as prepared for all the

    accredited courses and award appropriate creditunits in accordance with the Federal Governmentminimum academic standard.

    Prepare and submit master and placement lists to

    their respective coordinating agencies and ITF. Identify placement opportunities for students

    attachment

    Organize orientation courses in collaboration with

    the ITF for their students and others involved inthe Scheme

    THEINSTITUTIONSCONTD

    Supervise students on attachment and

    sign their logbooks. A minimum of twovisits should be made to the students byinstitutions based Supervisor during the

    period of attachment.

    Maintain separate account books forSIWES.

    Submit comprehensive reports on the

    Scheme to the Industrial Training Fundafter the programme.

    THE EMPLOYERSCollaborate with the institutions in

    preparation of job specification for theapproved courses for SIWES

    Accept students and assign them torelevant on-the-job training as stipulated inITF Decree No. 47 as amended (1990)

    Attach experienced staff to students foreffective training and supervision

    Grade students as provided for in theassessment form and the ITF Form 8 at the end

    of programme and submit same to theinstitution

    Complete SPE 1 Form on behalf of students,sign, stamp and return same to the ITF AreaOffice

    Inspect and sign students logbooks on weeklybasis.

    CONCLUSIONWe believe that the SIWES is a realisticprogramme that will continue to help ourcountry in its efforts to build a solid base forself-reliance in technological development.

    All the parties concerned are thereforeexpected to play their roles effectively so asto achieve the objectives of the Scheme.
