Principal’s Comments
Footy Day Next Monday we have our footy lunch. We will also make it footy dress day for a gold coin donation. These funds will be put towards supporting our World Vision child.
3 /4 Performance Classes are spending much time in practice as they gear up for the 2 big nights on Monday 29 th and Tuesday 30th August at the Rowville SC auditorium. This should be a great event.
Playground The rubber has been laid due to finally having some rain free days. It is just being given time to cure and we hope the equipment will be operational shortly.
Year 3 Tables We’ve had another big week on the times tables front with a number of our students performing brilliantly. 5’s in under 15 seconds were achieved by Keeley, Lauren, Julian, Kyle, Luke, Yara, Regan and Bradley in 3S, Annabelle and Sam in 3JC, Lachlan, Jaylen and John in 3 /4, and Leona and Sam in 3C.
We also commenced our 3’s and Caitlyn and Krispin in 3 /4, Kira, Allison, Josh, Tanner, Rylan and Ozcan in 3JC and Ethan in 3S were the “legends” in great times.
Woolies / Coles The voucher “fundraisers” from both companies are in full swing. We do have boxes in the foyer
for receipts and I note that many people have sent along some already, which is superb. This is a
great opportunity to tap into friends and family who may be happy to support our school. I believe
there is a Karoo box at the Stud Park Woolworths & there is double points this week in that chain
of stores.
Prep Rabbits Over past weeks the preps have had a mother rabbit and her babies in their classrooms. The students have enjoyed seeing the transformation from hairless, blind little things to rapidly growing cute creatures. We have them for next week as well.
Rebel There is a voucher available at the office that some people may like to take advantage of if you
were going to be shopping at Rebel this month. Offer valid until 31/08/11.
Molly On the weekend Molly in 6P had a very nasty bike accident at the BMX track which has resulted in her breaking both wrists, an elbow and sustaining facial injuries. This has required time in hospital and operations and could result in being in plaster for 6 months. Several parents have got together to organise a raffle to raise funds so that a self standing touch
screen can be purchased onto which can be downloaded books and music. Tickets are $1 each
and can be obtained from the Miss Poole’s Year 6 students. The prize has lots of goodies in it
including soaps, chocolates, lollies, golf balls, a yo-yo and skipping ropes. We will draw the raffle
on Monday 15th at assembly.

Karoo Calendar Principal’s Comments
NAPLAN results Yesterday Leanne and I met with our regional representative, Debbie Locco, to analyse the School’s NAPLAN results and to set out targets for the remainder of 2015-2016. As we were aware, Debbie confirmed the excellence of the results and the outstanding ‘value-adding’ for our students between Years 3 to 5. This means that the majority of students made high to medium growth with their learning, no matter whether performing at the high, average or low range. So students are making sound progress.
Debbie commented that we need to continue doing ‘what we are doing with teaching and learning’ and that Karoo’s results would be one of the best in the state. At Debbie’s suggestion we will publish some of the results, and have included in this newsletter the Year 3 and 5 Numeracy results. If you look at the graphs, Karoo’s results for each Numeracy question asked are the bars, and the lines indicate State and National results. Clearly Karoo’s results for the majority of questions are well beyond the National and the State data.
These results are due to staff teaching foundation and basic numeracy skills including counting, learning addition and subtraction facts and times tables, both multiplication and division. Our students are now competent and confident. Staff have participated in professional learning conducted by Tanya Mollica and Josh Maroney on teaching mathematic problem solving skills. We have seen excellent progress in teaching skills and in student engagement, motivation to learn and excitement for learning maths. A great team effort between students and teachers!
Inclusion If you are intending to hold a party for your child, please ensure that the invitation indicates that it is a private party and not a school event. Any school organised event would ensure that all students are included.

SCHOOL ASSEMBLY
Mon 19th October—Years 3-6
VISITORS TO THE SCHOOL
All visitors to the school must sign in and out at the office, and collect a green visitor’s badge. These badges help the students and staff identify you as an ‘authorised visitor’. A record of your presence on the school premises is vital in the case of an emergency.
Please remember to return the
badge when you sign out.

Wellbeing at Karoo
UNDERSTANDING YOURSELF AS A PARENT We all want to be the best parent we can be.
We all start out as parents with many ideas about parenting. We have
hopes and dreams for our children and ourselves as parents. Sometimes,
however, things get in the way of us being the parent we want to be.
Sometimes we can feel stuck in patterns we don’t like of responding to
our children, without really understanding why it happens.
Just like our children, our life experiences shape who we are. We draw
our ideas about children and parenting from many sources around us,
including our own parents, family, friends, child care, schools,
professionals and the media.
As parents, we often repeat what we know best. Most often what we
know best is drawn from our own experiences. Our experiences of
growing up in our family of origin are an important basis for the values
and beliefs we hold about children, parenting and families.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND SPORT NEWS Hoop Time Basketball Regional Competition and Division Finals The All Star Boys Basketball team from Karoo, that were
winners on the District Day, will compete on MONDAY OCTOBER 26
th at the State Basketball Centre in the Regional Hoop Time
Finals. They will also compete next Friday October 23rd, at the School Sport Victoria Division finals. It will certainly be a busy couple of days for these students, but I am sure they will not mind! Best of luck to the 8 boys playing in the finals games.
Year 6 District Summer Sport Day 2 This Friday is Day 2 of the Year 6 District Summer Sport Round Robin. Warm temperatures are forecast for the
second day of competition games. Students are reminded that they must wear their hat during all games and we advise that sunscreen also be worn throughout the day. It is important that the students have a drink/water bottle so they can maintain hydration levels.
Division Athletics Results Well done to the students who compete at the Division Athletics Competition on October 7th. The 17 students
represented our school and district with pride. Six students performed exceptionally well and qualified for the Regional Athletics, this Thursday. Congratulations to Jennifer S- 800m, Lachlan T – 800m, Olivia S 1500m, Aaron L- high jump, Clay T- triple jump and Lachlan M- discus and high jump. Good luck to those competing at regionals. In the coming weeks, photos and student comments will be included from the students who competed at both Division and Region level.

2015 Walkathon
Wednesday 28th October
The Walkathon is one of our major fundraisers for the year and will be held on 28th October. Forms were sent home last week to each student —please complete the white permission form and return it to the class teacher.
As an incentive for students to collect sponsors, a number of prizes have been organised which will be drawn on the day. To be included in the prize draw, sponsorship forms and money should be returned to the school by Monday 26th October.
If you would like to assist, helpers are needed to supervise checkpoints along the route to ensure student safety – please contact your child’s Class Rep to inform them if you are available to assist. Thank you.

The Daniel Morcombe Foundation Inc. (DMF) is committed to
Keeping Kids Safe. It was established by parents Bruce and
Denise Morcombe in 2005 after their son Daniel was abducted
and murdered in December 2003 while waiting to catch a bus on
the Sunshine Coast.
The Foundation was established as a lasting legacy to Daniel and
now has two main aims; to educate children on how to stay safe
in a physical and online environment and to support young
victims of crime.
To support this important cause, Junior School Council is organising a ‘Red Day’ where students
may wear red (or a touch of red).
Gold coin donation please!
