Principal’s Comments
Footy Day Next Monday we have our footy lunch. We will also make it footy dress day for a gold coin donation. These funds will be put towards supporting our World Vision child.
3 /4 Performance Classes are spending much time in practice as they gear up for the 2 big nights on Monday 29 th and Tuesday 30th August at the Rowville SC auditorium. This should be a great event.
Playground The rubber has been laid due to finally having some rain free days. It is just being given time to cure and we hope the equipment will be operational shortly.
Year 3 Tables We’ve had another big week on the times tables front with a number of our students performing brilliantly. 5’s in under 15 seconds were achieved by Keeley, Lauren, Julian, Kyle, Luke, Yara, Regan and Bradley in 3S, Annabelle and Sam in 3JC, Lachlan, Jaylen and John in 3 /4, and Leona and Sam in 3C.
We also commenced our 3’s and Caitlyn and Krispin in 3 /4, Kira, Allison, Josh, Tanner, Rylan and Ozcan in 3JC and Ethan in 3S were the “legends” in great times.
Woolies / Coles The voucher “fundraisers” from both companies are in full swing. We do have boxes in the foyer
for receipts and I note that many people have sent along some already, which is superb. This is a
great opportunity to tap into friends and family who may be happy to support our school. I believe
there is a Karoo box at the Stud Park Woolworths & there is double points this week in that chain
of stores.
Prep Rabbits Over past weeks the preps have had a mother rabbit and her babies in their classrooms. The students have enjoyed seeing the transformation from hairless, blind little things to rapidly growing cute creatures. We have them for next week as well.
Rebel There is a voucher available at the office that some people may like to take advantage of if you
were going to be shopping at Rebel this month. Offer valid until 31/08/11.
Molly On the weekend Molly in 6P had a very nasty bike accident at the BMX track which has resulted in her breaking both wrists, an elbow and sustaining facial injuries. This has required time in hospital and operations and could result in being in plaster for 6 months. Several parents have got together to organise a raffle to raise funds so that a self standing touch
screen can be purchased onto which can be downloaded books and music. Tickets are $1 each
and can be obtained from the Miss Poole’s Year 6 students. The prize has lots of goodies in it
including soaps, chocolates, lollies, golf balls, a yo-yo and skipping ropes. We will draw the raffle
on Monday 15th at assembly.

Karoo Calendar Principal’s Comments
School Council At School Council on Monday evening the following items were discussed:
NAPLAN Results: A celebration of the wonderful growth in student learning with Karoo
achieving 30% above the state in growth for our students from Year 3 to 5. Our goals from the Strategic Plan of increasing the rate of students achieving at a high level and reducing the number of students achieving at a low level has been achieved. This will continue to be an area of focus for our work with students. School Council positively acknowledged that all of the Year 3 and Year 5 NAPLAN results were above the state. This is a huge achievement for any school!
Video Surveillance: Consideration is being given to installing video surveillance. A
number of quotes have been received and a working party is giving consideration to these quotes. The Department of Education Security management services have given names of companies to consider quotes from, plus some recommendations from Karoo families.
Working Bee: Please leave Saturday 7th November from 9.30am to 12 noon free as we
will be having a working bee. More details will follow on what is to be achieved, but even half an hour from each family would make a HUGE difference to our grounds.
Whooping Cough From media reports you would be aware there has been a significant increase in the number of cases of whooping cough. We have had one case reported and medical advice from DET indicates that only a person who remains within a metre of the person infected for a few hours is at risk. If you are concerned about your child’s health, please seek medical advice. Students who are excluded from school are those infected or those students in the same class who have not been immunised. If you have not provided your child’s immunisation certificate, please do so at your earliest convenience.
Foxes As is the case throughout Melbourne, Rowville has foxes living in suburbia. We have some that appear in the school grounds in the early morning. The foxes are not concerned about people, but please advise your children not to go near them or touch them as they are wild animals. We have sought advice from pest control and the local council. There are issues with eradication as family pets may be exposed to danger.
Paul, our new Crossing Supervisor We have a newly appointed School Crossing Supervisor for our Murrindal Drive crossing. Please make Paul feel welcome at Karoo.
Staff Car Park Parents are reminded yet again that the Staff Car Park is for staff only. There is ample parking in the streets surrounding the school for parents to park.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND SPORT NEWS
Hoop Time Basketball Competition Report Last Thursday five teams of year 5 and 6 students from Karoo participated in the District Hoop time Basketball Competition held at Dandenong Stadium. We entered 2 All Star Boys’ teams, an All Star Girls’ team and 2 Future Stars teams. It certainly was an action packed day with lots of games played. Our students were wonderful ambassadors for the school, playing with enthusiasm, determination and a team spirit, whilst exhibiting the Karoo values. The All Star Boys’ A team were undefeated on the day and will go on to compete in the Regional day on October 19th at Dandenong stadium. The All Star Girls’ team were placed 3rd at the end of the competition, the future Stars teams finished 2nd and 3rd in their pools and both won their ‘consolation’ final game. Thanks must go to the many , many parents who assisted by coaching, scoring or supporting the teams and to Mrs Watson for her organisation of the teams and parents. Mrs Mowat was disappointed she was ill and could not attend, but we thank her for her efforts in preparing teams. I was very impressed with the standard of skill and sportsmanship from our students!
Year 6 District Summer Sport Day 1 This Friday is Day 1 of the Year 6 District Summer Sport Round Robin. The softball and rounders teams will play at Gilbert Park, the cricket team play at Lewis Park Reserve and volleyballers play at Karoo. Students need to bring lunch, snacks and drinks. They need to wear their school sports or polo top and other clothes and footwear suitable for their sport. Thank you to the parents who have offered to assist, an information note will be sent home today or tomorrow.
SOS – PARENT HELPERS NEEDED We have a parent assisting at Rounders on October 16th, but need a parent to help out this Friday September 11th. We also need a parent to assist on September 11th and October 16th at Softball. If you are able to assist , please contact the school office with your details.
AFL Roadshow and Footy Colours Day What a wonderful celebration of AFL football we witnessed on Monday. Students were resplendent in their football colours and it was great to see so many teams represented. The AFL Roadshow also rode into town and parked itself at Karoo for the day. Students participated in a range of skill activities including handballing, kicking for goal, taking a ‘speccy’ at the inflatable marking station and tested their agility at the climb and slide station. Teachers and students and teachers alike had an enjoyable session. The AFL Roadshow coaches emailed me to praise our students for their behaviour throughout the day as it made the coaches job very easy!

All the Year 5's were involved in Action research teams on topics related to Welfare such as
Cyber Bullying. Kate Wilde ran the classes and all the children enjoyed these sessions.
Each Year 5 group presented a lesson to a Year 3 class on their chosen topic.
This culminated in a Parent Expo night in which children showcased
their presentations to family and friends.
Year 5 Expo
By Madison, Ella, Jacob, Brianna, Jordan
We were all excited for the Kate Wilde expo that we’ve been preparing for 11 weeks. My team the amazing Ninja Unicorns had the topic of Gossip and Name-Calling. We taught the Year 3’s this by the game of Charades. On the expo night we showed the parents what we learned and what we did with the Year 3’s. Our table ended up looking awesome by the end and we had the best time ever. I wish Kate could come again because the outcome was spectacular.
Year 5 Expo
By Jeremy
My group the Nuclear Porcupines did a board game with questions and LEGO figures. Basically there are 56 squares and the first to finish wins. As the Year 3’s played, we taught them about the effects of bullying. Bullying can hurt people. Year 5 Expo
By Siyan, Humzah, Chloe and Evan
Our group was called the Blue Monkeys. The topic we researched was Verbal Bullying (verbal bullying is basically name calling and put downs). When the Expo was on, our group decorated our own table with souvenirs, information, refreshments and photos. During the Expo, parents asked us questions and we explained our topic, what activities we had done with the Year 3’s and told them what we would do to stop verbal bullying in the future. After the questioning and answering, the parents voted for the group they liked. Kate Wilde then gave a little speech about types of bullying, which included a bit of comedy and made the parents laugh. Two weeks later, Kate came back to our classroom for some games. Unfortunately, we didn’t win on the night but we all had fun and a laugh.
Year 5 Expo
By Callum, Bailey, Fletcher, Aimee and Sarah
We have been learning about four types of bullying, the effects of bullying and what to do if you get bullied. Kate talked to us about it all and helped us understand more about bullying. We also had the opportunity to demonstrate what we had learnt over the previous 11 weeks with groups of Year 3’s and the Parent Expo night. Our group called the Chocolate Minions felt very happy with the overall result achieved by our group.
Year 5 Expo
By Clay, Aaron, Logan, Indiana and Cassidy
Our group was called the Ninja Noodles. The topic we did with Kate Wilde was Resilience. We all learnt lots. A quick definition of resilience is: when you bounce back from a situation and move on with life. We had an activity day with the Year 3’s. The game we played was Um Er Ball. It was a huge success. The younger children all learned heaps about resilience. We also had an Expo evening. All the Year 5 classes were there. The most votes in 5T was us tied with the Blue Monkeys. We all had a lot of fun.
Year 5 Expo
By Patrick
On the 18th August our parents came to school for the Cyber Smart Expo. Kate Wilde has been working in class with us teaching us about being Cyber Smart. One way to be Cyber Smart is not to talk to people you don't know online. Another thing is you should not give out your personal details. If you are being cyber bullied you should tell someone like your parents or teacher.
Year 5 Expo
By Gemma, Srofiyah, Jordan
and Regent
We are the Samaurai Ninjas. We taught the Year 3’s all about being Cyber Smart and had fun with them. We showed them some posters we had made and played a game called Tag Quiz. On the night of the Expo we got lots of votes.
