Performance appraisals offer a valuable opportunity to focus on and align an employee’s work activities and goals to organization priorities, to identify and correct existing issues, and to enhance future performance. The existence of a structured appraisal process indicates to an employee that the organization is genuinely interested in their performance and development. This alone can have a positive influence on the individual’s sense of worth, commitment and engagement with the organization. Want to learn more about this powerful approach to increasing your company’s bottom line? Then don’t miss this presentation.

Steve Arbo Named Public Administrator of the YearThe Greater Kansas City Chapter of the American Society for Public Administration selected Lee’s Summit City Manager Steve Arbo as the 2011 Public

Administrator of the Year in the Mid-Sized City division.

This award is presented annually to professionals in the Greater Kansas City area for outstanding performance in the practice and teaching of public administration. Recognized for his exceptional contributions to the public sector, Arbo received his award at the organization’s award dinner on May 25, in Kansas City, Mo.

According to Michael Barrett, president of the ASPA’s K.C. chapter, the organization generally awards the Public Administrator of the Year to an official

in each of the Federal, State and Local levels – in addition to the Not-for-Profit sector – but this year decided to set the divisions at the Urban, Mid-Sized City and Small City/Municipality levels.

Joining Steve Arbo as recipients of this year’s Public Administrator of the Year awards are Troy Schulte, city manager of Kansas City, Mo.; Raymore Police Chief Kris Turnbow; and Brent Miles, president of the Wyandotte Economic Development Council.

The Do Drop Inn, located at 22 SW Third in downtown Lee’s Summit, recently celebrated it’s 50th Anniversary.

As reported in the Lee’s Summit Tribune, when asked how the Do made it for 50 years, owner Sue Pfeiffer was quick to respond, “Our friends, loyal customers, and loyal employees. That is one thing that

has not changed over the years. Mom and Dad would have said the same thing and so would Amanda. Mandy has worked here for 10 years and Micah Rogers has been with us for 9. You have to be dedicated and willing to work seven days a week and long hours. You are here all the time so the customers

really become a family.”

The Do also now offers Q’s Que, for all those barbeque lovers. Q’s Que is open from 11 a.m.–2 p.m. and 5–8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m.–2 p.m.–5 p.m. to 1 a.m. Friday, and 11 a.m. –1 a.m. Saturday.

Kiwanis Club Mom’s Day Baby Shower is a SuccessThe Lee’s Summit Kiwanis Club partnered with Hy-Vee West and Hy-Vee East to sponsor the Annual Mom’s Day Baby Shower on May 7. Kiwanis members asked shoppers to donate items or cash for mothers in need.

Donations collected from Hy-Vee East were donated to Lee’s Summit Social Services, and donations from Hy-Vee West

were donated to Hope House.

Cash donations for the day totaled $4,355.32, and two pick-up trucks full of diapers, wipes and more were collected and delivered.

Pictured from left to right are Kiwanis members Dave Skitek and Richard Veasman.

What’s a “QR” Code?Quick Response (QR) codes are similar to barcodes with the difference being the amount of data that can be held or shared.

QR codes allow content to be decoded at high speed via a mobile device.

QR codes can be added to anything and used to store all sorts of information including websites, map locations, contact information, product information and much more.

For example it is much easier to use a QR code than type out a long website in an ad. The user will have an easier time locating a certain page on your site instead of trying to accurately type out a url such as http://www.lschamber.com/?page_id=62.

Need a QR scanner for your smartphone or tablet? Download the Lee’s Summit Chamber App for free which includes a scanner. Try scanning the code above and see where it takes you.

QR codes are free to create. Check out qrcode.kaywa.com, scanlife.com, qrstuff.com, just to name a few.

New Fire Station No. 2 Combines Sustainability and Durability

Healthy Meal Preparation

The recently completed Lee’s Summit Fire Station No. 2 is a prime example of how current practices in green design and construction can make a new facility highly sustainable while maintaining the budget and meeting its essential functions.

The new replacement station, located at 2000 NE Rice Road, is 8,905-square-feet and features two drive-through apparatus bays, bunkrooms for seven, a kitchen adjoined by a dining room, dayroom, fitness room and training room.

While the station will not be certified under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program, it would likely qualify, according to Rick Kuhl, the WSKF Architects principal-in-charge and LEED Accredited Professional who led the project design team.

Green design features begin with the site, where lighter-colored concrete was

used to minimize the amount of solar heat absorbed by paved areas. Xeriscape design (reduced water landscaping) is

used while a rain garden helps control stormwater runoff and filter contaminants before water flows into storm sewers.

The color and material selection

of the station’s roof were chosen to reduce the amount of heat absorbed by the building. Inside, the walls and roof were coated with a special open cell spray foam insulation and vapor control membrane to create a high-performance system that mitigates the impact of outdoor temperatures on indoor comfort. A high-efficiency insulation system is also a key element in the roof, walls and doors of the apparatus bays.

Other green elements of Station No. 2 include high-efficiency lighting, use of natural daylighting to light the interior,

recycled material in many of the building materials and use of low volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in interior design materials such as carpet and paint.
