Dear Friends,It’s hard to believe that school is out and summer is

here. If you are looking for some fun ways to spend those dog days of summer, there are many events, festivals and activities happening in Fayetteville. I hope you will check out the details in the community section of our wonderful website, www.fayettevillear.com.

It may seem like the Chamber is all business, but busi-ness can be fun…especially during the summer, and some of our members have a lot planned just for you and your family. Be sure and look into what’s going on at Walton Arts Center, Arts Live Theater, Wilson Park, Gulley Park, First Thursdays, the Botanical Gardens, the Arkansas Air Museum and the AMP. There is something for everyone!

As the mother of a very active 10-year old son, I am very excited about welcom-ing Academy Sports to Fayetteville! They are in the process of building a 71,000-SF store that will be located just south of the Malco Razorback Cinema on Steele Boulevard. This $2 million project will bring about 125 jobs to Fayetteville and should open just before Christmas. Also, welcome to Karcher, the world’s leading provider of cleaning systems, who just acquired a 660,000-SF building in Fayette-ville! This is great news for our area and you can read more about that a little later in this newsletter.

Have a wonderful, safe summer and thank you for supporting the local busi-nesses, events and festivals in Fayetteville!

These manufacturers may be eligible to receive a no-cost assessment provided by the DOE Industrial Assessment Cen-ter project. A team from the U of A will conduct an energy assessment to iden-tify opportunities to improve productiv-ity, reduce waste, and save energy while training the next generation of energy savvy engineers. This program is done in partnership with the Arkansas Manu-facturing Solutions (AMS).

• Gross annual sales below $100 million

• Fewer than 500 employees at the plant site

• Annual energy bills more than $100,000 and less than $2.5 million

NOARK’s 2012 Compensation and Benefits SurveyThe Fayetteville Chamber, other lo-

cal chambers and NWA Council sup-port NOARK’s 2012 Compensation and Benefits Survey that is currently under-way. The annual survey, now in its 22nd consecutive year, offers valuable statis-tics in the areas of compensation and benefits that include the latest com-pensation ranges and bonus plans for over 150 job categories. This informa-tion can be helpful to local HR depart-

ments to attract and retain the best and brightest talent at the most appropriate levels of compensation.

We encourage local companies to participate in this survey by contacting Blair Johanson ([email protected]; 479-521-2697) of Johan-son Group, the consulting organization providing services for this year’s survey. Johanson Group will provide you the necessary login information.

In addition, a link to an instructional video for inputting data can be viewed by clicking on this link http://jesap.com/videos/NOARK/NOARK_Introduction.html or by cutting and pasting the URL into your browser. The deadline to par-ticipate is June 15, 2012.

The Fayetteville Chamber of Com-merce Transportation Sub-Committee was proud to sponsor the 2012 Spring Transportation Initiative Award (TIA) Competition on May 11th, 2012. This inaugural award was designed to rec-ognize Fayetteville’s young leaders who demonstrate outstanding initiative and creativity in the field of transporta-tion. The 8th grade students attending the Gateway to Technology and Ca-reer Orientation classes in Ramay and Woodland Junior Highs are the com-petitors for this award.

The students formed teams and were

sponsored by a teacher. Each team se-lected one of the following Transpor-tation-related issues as the theme for their presentation:

Save the Dollar - Influencing national, state and local legislation to save the shrinking transportation funding dollar.

Change the future now – How my generation will improve transportation and reduce environmental impacts.

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle – Re-thinking transportation and the materi-als it uses and consumes.

“The Fayetteville Transportation Committee is happy to host the Second

Transportation Initiative Award Com-petition,” said Committee Chairman Mike Burns. “The students competing are a new generation with innovative thinking and exciting new ideas to help tackle transportation challenges both for today and in the years to come.”

The teams prepared presentations that showed their insight, education, possible solutions, motivation or any combination thereof to demonstrate their initiative and creativity to the transportation related issue they had chosen. Each team had two to five minutes to make their presentation showcasing their creative talents to a panel of judges. The judges were Mike Burns, Chairman of the Transportation Committee and from Crafton Tull & As-sociates, Kip Guthrie, Past Chair of the Committee and from Jacobs Engineer-ing, Ray Boudreaux of Fayetteville Ex-ecutive Airport, Steve Clark, Chamber President & CEO, and a teacher from the schools.

The Northwest Arkansas Council has partnered with AT&T and the Endeavor Foundation to provide in-ternships to University of Arkansas and John Brown University students for the fall of 2012. The internships will run approximately 14 weeks, from the week of August 27th to the week of December 6th, with specific dates to be negotiated with each employer. The goals of the intern-ships are to 1) expand the spirit of entrepreneurship within the region’s young adult population, 2) increase the matriculation and graduation rates of college students in the re-gion and 3) introduce area small businesses to the talent available from area students.

Requirements for participating businesses:

Each employer will pay at least minimum wage or its equivalent by

stipend. The NWA Council, through its

contribution from AT&T, will reim-burse each business for the expense of hiring an intern for up to $1,000 per intern for the semester. Or, in-stead of reimbursement, the busi-ness can elect to have this amount paid directly to the intern at the end of a successful internship.

Each business must provide a min-imum of 12 hours of work per week.

Each business must identify a proj-ect or projects for the intern to work on during the course of the intern-ship. For example, an intern could work on a promotional campaign for the business. The project should be something of value to the organiza-tion, but not of such high importance that it would be better handled by a permanent staff member. Elements for the project must be specific and

measurable in order to monitor prog-ress. For example, an intern who is working on a promotional campaign might develop a customer database for mailings, create a brochure, and attend local events to promote the business.

Each business must identify a di-rect supervisor for each intern. This person should be responsible for assigning projects, working with the intern to provide on-the-job train-ing, answering questions, offering regular performance reviews, and orienting the intern to the business and staff.

Interested businesses agreeing to the terms above should send a short description (no longer than one page) of the internship they intend to offer to Stacey Sturner at the Northwest Arkansas Council via email at [email protected] by

July 1, 2012. The description should include relevant information about the business and the projects/duties expected of the intern.

Please contact Stacey with any questions via email or by phone at 479-582-2100. Businesses should be aware that this is a competitive process and it is possible that not all interested businesses will be select-ed for the program. They are limited to 20 positions.

On Thursday, May 24, 2012, a special ceremony was held at Mc-Nair Middle School. During the an-nual tradition of the 7th Grade Cel-ebration Day, some time was taken out to honor the namesake of the school, Feriba McNair. Mrs. McNair passed away in March 2012 and the students, faculty, and staff, and the PTA wanted to do something to honor her. An assembly is always held during the 7th Grade Celebra-tion to recognize the Feriba McNair Student of the Year. A plaque hangs in the entryway of the school with past and present recipients names. This award is given to a student who is nominated by the 7th grade pod teachers and then has to write an essay about their experience at Mc-Nair Middle School. A committee judges those entries and a recipi-ent is chosen. This year’s recipient was Mary Larkin Furlow. On hand to present her award was Mrs. McNair’s son Malcolm McNair and several members of her family. During this assembly the 7th graders were also treated to an inspirational speech from Kikko Haydar. A former McNair student and a graduate of Fayette-ville High School. Kikko is currently on the University of Arkansas Basket-ball team and is pre-med and hopes to one day be a doctor. He gave the 7th graders encouraging words about listening to their parents and teachers and to not succumb to peer pressure and “JUST SAY NO” to drugs and alcohol.

Following the assembly, the 7th grade students, faculty and staff, and the McNair family gathered in front of the school. Several 7th grade students participated in the tree dedication ceremony to honor Mrs. McNair by telling about her contributions to the Fayetteville Public Schools and by presenting the following poem in her honor. Finally, the McNair Family, pictured is Conner McNair, helped plant the tree and thanked the students and faculty of McNair for continuing to remember their mother.

Feriba McNair was a former coach and teacher in the Fayetteville Pub-lic Schools, a school board member for 19 years and was the first woman to serve on the Fayetteville school board. She served six consecutive terms on the board with the last 3 as president of the board. She

is the namesake of our wonderful McNair Middle School. She gradu-ated from Fayetteville High School in 1938. She was inducted into the Fayetteville Schools Hall of Honor in 1999. After receiving her degree from the University of Arkansas in 1942 she established the first girls physical education program at FHS. She also taught science and was the cheerleader and pep squad sponsor for several years. She also went on to develop the girls golf program at FHS. Mrs. McNair was also very ac-tive in civic & community work for 70 years after graduating from FHS.

One student added that “Mrs. Mc-Nair will be missed, but we gather today to plant a tree in her memory. This tree will grow as the school con-tinues to grow and serve many stu-dents and their families for years to come.”

Knowing of a Tree In Honor of Feriba McNair

Conner McNair helps plant the tree in his grandmother’s memory.

Knowing of a TreeIt is a good thing indeed

When someone plants a seedAnd to watch and help it growSo someday, it to be a tree.It is a good thing in truth

When a tree brings forth its fruitOr to shade someone’s head

Or its branch be a robins nest.It is good when a tree is used

By nature, or by me or youTo protect or shelter livesFor a tree; it never dies.

A tree is someone’s homeA tree is someone’s good book

A tree is never alone, For to know a tree, all you do; is look.

It is good to plant a treeIt is good to plant a seed

For someday it will be grownAnd a tree, will be known.
