University of Edinburgh scientists created Dolly the Sheep, the first mammal to be genetically cloned from an adult cell; the first genetically engineered hepatitis B vaccine; the first automated industrial assembly robot; and devised technology used in today’s smart phones. We are working towards many more historic firsts, including finding new treatments for diseases such as multiple sclerosis, motor neurone disease and breast cancer, developing solutions to tackle climate change and understanding the ageing process.

Which kind of degree is right for you?Taught programmes

MastersThe University offers an extensive range of masters programmes. Most are designed to develop knowledge or techniques in specialised subjects previously studied more generally at undergraduate level, although some act as ‘conversion routes’, allowing students to change or develop their area of specialisation from that undertaken at undergraduate level.

They can be stand-alone qualifications for career or personal development, or preparation for further research and possibly an academic career.

Most of our masters programmes lead to the award of MSc; this applies across the spectrum of subjects available at Edinburgh, where it is necessary to distinguish postgraduate masters from our undergraduate MA degree.

Other qualifications include an MBA, LLM, MMus, MEd or MTheol. Most masters are taught programmes and involve a combination of taught modules, coursework and supervised research, and students are expected to write a dissertation or undertake a project.

Duration: 1 year

Professional DoctoratesProfessional Doctorates offered by the University are specialist qualifications aimed at professional development in specific areas, such as Doctor of Clinical Psychology (DClinPsychol) or Doctor of Engineering in System Level Integration (EngD). Professional doctorates combine advanced research training, a substantial contribution to knowledge through their own research and a rigorous reflection on professional practice.

Duration: 3-4 years depending on the programme

Online distance learning Masters/DiplomasWe offer a growing number of online distance learning programmes designed for those candidates who wish to undertake further study while maintaining their professional lives or other commitments. Our online distance learning programmes also allow you to join a global community of experts in your field.

Duration: varying lengths of programmes are offered.

Research programmes

Masters by ResearchAn MSc by Research is a one-year programme designed specifically to prepare students for advanced research, although it can be taken as a qualification in its own right. Each programme comprises research skills and methods training relevant to a particular field of study and a substantial dissertation or research project. Many of our MSc by Research programmes offer the opportunity to study advanced-level taught modules in your subject area drawing on our extensive range of masters (taught) programmes. An MSc by Research is assessed by coursework, examination and a dissertation.

Duration: 1 year

MPhilAn MPhil is assessed by thesis. The objective of this programme is to produce a research worker who has acquired a good all-round knowledge of their subject, in-depth knowledge of a specialised area, and the research skills to carry out and present a piece of original research for submission for a higher degree. MPhil students may extend their studies to PhD registration subject to satisfactory progress.

Duration: 2 years

PhDA PhD is the highest academic research qualification, entailing research training and supervised research, either on a one-to-one basis with a supervisor(s) or as part of a research team. The aim of a research degree is to provide a thorough training in a particular academic area through original investigation and experiment. This allows students to acquire the specialist background knowledge for the projected research, and to develop the skills appropriate to research that field. The precise focus of the research will be agreed between the student and the supervisor and is likely to develop over the course of the PhD.

The outcome of the research is embodied in a thesis written by the student, the acquisition of research skills, specialist knowledge and transferable skills relevant to a whole host of careers within academic research and elsewhere. PhD research is a challenging yet exciting undertaking which allows research students to make a significant contribution to the existing body of knowledge in their field and to work with eminent academics and experts. A PhD is assessed by an oral examination named viva voce during which the PhD candidate defend his or her research thesis.

Edinburgh Global Masters Scholarships30 scholarships will be available to international Masters applicants who are liable to pay tuition fees at the overseas rate. 10 awards will have a value of £5,000 each while a further 20 scholarships of £3,000 each will be awarded. Edinburgh Global Research ScholarshipsAt least 30 scholarships will be available to students who have been accepted to study on a PhD programme in any subject offered by the University. Students from outside the EEA

From April 2012, graduates with an offer of employment may consider applying in the Tier 2 Skilled Worker category. This will allow students to take up employment with a UK Border Agency registered sponsoring company or organisation.

Medicine & Veterinary MedicineFirst established in 1726, the Faculty of Medicine was the pre-eminent medical centre of the 18th and 19th centuries. Founded by William Dick in 1823, The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies provided the blueprint for the world’s finest vet schools.

Today, the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine has 3,911 students and 2,047 staff and after a consistent, 30-year strategy of Interdisciplinarity, offers an extensive range of postgraduate programmes covering all aspects of medicine, including Community Health, Molecular and Clinical Medicine and Veterinary Medicine.

Student profiles

For this MSc I’m examining the effect of environmental enrichment on the behavioural time budgets and stress responsiveness of zebra finch, a common laboratory songbird. It’s a taught programme but also involves research.

I’ve really appreciated the diversity of lecture topics and speakers provided during the course. I’ve had the opportunity to engage with many prominent experts in the field of animal behaviour and welfare. I’ve also been on a variety of excursions including visits to farms, veterinary clinics, an animal testing facility, the Edinburgh Zoo, a wholesale animal market, and even an abattoir. This first-hand experience undoubtedly gave me a better understanding of current animal welfare issues. The MSc programme also gave me the opportunity to join relevant scientific societies which exposes me to prospective academic and career opportunities I would otherwise be unaware of.

Edinburgh is a gorgeous city that manages to maintain a strong community feeling even with a population of around 500,000. The city is very easy to get around, I walk most places and there are also excellent bus services for longer journeys. Furthermore, living in Edinburgh has given me the unique opportunity to mingle with people from all over the globe, while still immersing myself in Scottish culture. The student population is filled with interesting people with a variety of academic ambitions from all over the world.

I expect to return to Canada and get involved in animal welfare policy development. I am particularly interested in the reforming of existing guidelines regulating the use and treatment of animals in scientific research. My education has given me a unique advantage which will allow me to apply my skills and knowledge to career opportunities worldwide.

My decision to study here at the University of Edinburgh was mainly influenced by the excellent research facilities at the Business School and the highly-ranked research expertise, especially the academic credentials of my supervisors.

The rich heritage and the location of the University of Edinburgh also influenced my decision - the city of Edinburgh is one the most liveable cities in the world. It is well-known for its magnificent architecture and is famous for its history and culture - especially the summer festivals. On top of that, the people of Scotland are the friendliest and most helpful I have ever found.

I have been awarded The Principal’s Career Development PhD Scholarship and Edinburgh Global Research Scholarship. These two scholarships together relieve me from tension of funding my programme and help me fully concentrate on my research project.

I’m carrying out my PhD in Management, concentrating on corporate governance and accounting attribute - a highly demanding degree around the world. When this degree is obtained from University of Edinburgh, its value is increased tremendously which will open up my opportunities to work in world class organisations.

The support for international students at the university is really helpful. There are lots of different social events and there are opportunities to engage in voluntary work. Plus, being in an international environment allows you to make friends with people from all over the world.

I think the University offers one of the most modern and exciting research facilities in UK. If you want to hone your research skills to be a leading researcher in your field, I’d recommend coming to Edinburgh.

I’m in the fourth year of my Phd in Operational Research. My research work is to design an automatic tool that can partition a large optimization problem into several sub-problems in order to parallel the computing processes. The result will be a dramatic reduction in the time which is needed to process the original problem. At University of Edinburgh I’ve been able to tailor my studies through module choices to support my research – it is a flexible approach that works for me.

The reason I chose to study at University of Edinburgh is, firstly, the fantastic scholarships they offer. I was awarded The Principle’s Edinburgh Overseas Research Scholarship. It’s given me the financial support I need to allow me to concentrate fully on my research. Secondly, I chose it because the University’s reputation of high quality education and research is known world-wide. It’s also given me access to a network of

experts and a supervisor who provides excellent support and guidance – he always points me in the right direction.

Life in Edinburgh is very relaxed. It’s a great city– it has busy and quiet areas, historic and modern, parks, mountains, seaside and countryside and all within easy reach. It’s got everything! Climbing to the top of Arthur’s Seat gives a great view of the entire city.

I recommend the University of Edinburgh, it’s a beautiful city and the academic environment is very supportive. I know that the experiences and knowledge I’ve gained here will benefit my future career when I return to China.

I’m in the ‘data collection’ stage of my research now, and looking back the things that have made this course really special have been the course preparation, the seminar series - listening to world renowned academic speakers, the tutoring opportunities which helped me develop my teaching experience, and the opportunity to work on research projects which helped develop my research skills. Plus, the staff in my department have been extremely supportive.

I chose Edinburgh because of the academic reputation of the University and staff, and the fact I won a British Council de Souza Trust Scholarship and Goa Scholars Award, which funded my first year. Later I got funding from the University too. But I was apprehensive before I came; going to a strange land with a cold and wet climate is a very big step!

These concerns quickly disappeared when I arrived. Not only is Edinburgh a beautiful city – I love living here, but the people here are very hospitable.

The University is international too, there are lots of students from overseas and if you want to find people from your home country, you can. There are nationality societies that the University nurtures to make sure that students feel at home, and opportunities to see a bit of Scotland. Now I think of Edinburgh as a “home away from home.”

When I graduate in 2013 I plan to continue my academic career in teaching and research, but also to become a part of national/international think tank that writes policies about care of older people. This course has given me a boost both academically and professionally and really helped me focus my ethical aims.

We are committed to helping as many of our new students as possible to find appropriate, safe and affordable housing. We guarantee an offer of accommodation to all new, single, postgraduate students from outside the European Union, provided they hold an unconditional offer to study at the University and their accommodation application is received by the deadline.

Although students from within the European Union cannot, regrettably, be guaranteed an offer of accommodation, we do strongly recommend that they still apply, as they will be made an offer if rooms are available; this often happens. We can provide some help on finding housing in the city, via our Accommodation Advice Centre open in the summer before teaching starts.

All university accommodation for postgraduate students is self-catered, with the exception of a small number of places at John Burnett House, at Pollock Halls.

The majority of residences are let on a 51-week contract, with rent including utilities, internet access and some cleaning. All our housing is managed by a team of Accommodation Managers and Wardens, who are responsible for the smooth running of the properties and are supported by Residents’ Assistants (students with some experience of living in our accommodation and who live on site).

The needs of a student with a partner or a family are different, and we appreciate that it is sometimes difficult or expensive to find the right private accommodation. We do have some accommodation especially for couples and families but this is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Travel around the cityDue to the compact nature of the city, most of Edinburgh’s residents get around on foot. However, there is good provision for cyclists, and an excellent bus network. The mountains, lochs, forests, fresh air and great views of the Highlands and Islands are only a few hours away. Scotland has one of the longest coastlines for a country of its size, so visiting the beach is easy and highly recommended, and watersports such as surfing and sailing are popular here.

1 Central/George Square Most of our Schools are located here in the city centre, with the

Royal Mile and Princes Street close by.

2 New College The striking New College - home to the School of Divinity - lies just

below Edinburgh Castle, overlooking Princes Street.

3 Holyrood The Moray House School of Education is situated on the Holyrood

campus, near to the Royal Mile and close to the new Scottish

Parliament and the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

4 King’s Buildings (Science and Engineering) Science & Engineering subjects are taught at the King’s Buildings,

10 minutes by bus from the Central/George Square area (a free

University shuttle bus operates during semester time).

5 Little France (Medicine) The custom-designed New Royal Infirmary, just 4 miles from the city

centre, houses significant medical teaching and research facilities.

6 Easter Bush (Veterinary Medicine) This campus is around 10km south of the University’s central

area, and is home to part of the Veterinary School, including the

prestigious small and large animal hospitals.
