We have three campuses at Edinburgh Napier University, all of them cosmopolitan and dynamic. They cater for the needs of the 21st-century postgraduate, with state-of-the-art teaching facilities and laboratories, and extensive computer suites, including one open 24 hours a day during Trimesters 1 and 2. Our study spaces suit real-world students, not those of centuries past.

We provide for life beyond the lecture theatre too, with cafes and Starbucks franchises, and our superb [EN]GAGE gym, with a 200 sq m fitness suite, 1,200 sq m sports hall, and dozens of fitness classes and sports activities each week.

  • FACILITIES TO TAKE YOU FURTHER

Our facilities can also inspire, opening up new opportunities and career paths. Facilities such as multimedia language labs, industry-standard music studios, broadcast studios and computer games development labs will help you pursue your career aspirations or discover new passions.

Our School of Computing has some of the most impressive IT facilities in a UK university, including specialist labs for Cisco networking, embedded and wireless systems, and Linux, Cisco and Microsoft technologies.

Our Sport and Exercise Science laboratories are among the best in the UK, and include a human performance laboratory and a biomechanics laboratory. We recently opened an environmental chamber where researchers can test athletic performance in extreme conditions, including high and low temperatures and humidity.

The chamber is the largest facility of its kind in Scotland, and can replicate high altitude conditions up to the equivalent of Everest Base Camp. As well as observing performance, our researchers and students can test equipment and clothing in the most extreme conditions - all from the comfort of Edinburgh.

At the School of Nursing, Midwifery & Social Care, we have a 1,000 sq m Simulation and Clinical Skills Centre. It even includes a High Dependency Unit (HDU) simulator suite which replicates an intensive care treatment area.

Other facilities at the Sighthill campus range from Biomed labs with confocal microscope, histology suite and real-time PCR suite, to our capacity to work with anaerobic micro-organisms in our Biotech programmes.

These diverse and impressive facilities have a common theme: to enrich the skills and career prospects of our students. Theyll help you gain skills and experiences relevant to employers all over the world.

  • We innovate. You stand outWhen so many applicants are chasing every graduate-level job, you want to stand out from the crowd.

Every postgraduate programme at Edinburgh Napier is designed with this in mind. We have strong links with employers and industry, and our courses are accredited internationally. A recent report also named us the most successful university in Scotland for graduate enterprise and start-ups.

Each postgraduate course is structured to provide the skills and knowledge valued by employers globally. We complement this with innovative programmes to boost your employability:

Our Confident Futures programme is unique in higher education in the UK. The workshops are free to all postgraduate students and include topics such as assertiveness, networking, selling your strengths, self-employment, and preparing for assessment centres.

Throughout the year, we run Academic Skills workshops, open to all postgraduates and all free of charge. They include sessions specifically for non-native English speakers, and cover anything from essay writing to presentations to help with maths.

OUR LINKS WITH EMPLOYERSThe experience of our staff can also enrich your career prospects. Across our schools, our staff work on knowledge exchange projects; sit on advisory boards; and provide direct services and consultancy to commercial and public-sector clients.

Our staff use their active involvement in commercial and public life to arrange substantial input from employers, including talks and workshops, employer-led projects and professional placements. They proactively communicate information about job vacancies, internships, competitions and grants.

    92% of our postgraduate

students are in work or full-time education six

    months after graduating

  • A jetpack for business successThe traditional career paths are no longer the only option for students. Many of our postgraduates go on to set up their own businesses.

We encourage entrepreneurship and help many students and alumni to develop their own business propositions. In 2014 our Business School was one of the first business schools in the UK to gain the new Small Business Charter Award, recognising our work to support start-ups and small businesses.

The Moffat Centre at our Craiglockhart campus and Bright Red Ventures at Merchiston are free incubator spaces where our students can launch their own enterprises. As well as free space and office facilities, students gain from mentoring, business advice, and interaction with lawyers, accountants and angel investors.

Edinburgh Napier also accommodates Edinburghs Entrepreneurial Spark incubator, in partnership with some of Scotlands leading entrepreneurs. Almost 100 businesses have been set up through its Accelerator programmes.

All students can apply to be junior consultants on our Bright Red Triangle programme and will work with a senior staff member on a project for an external organisation, often an SME.

Over the past year, 60 students have acted as consultants on Bright Red Triangle projects. The programme provides them with new professional networks, as well as valuable CV material.

The team at the Centre for Entrepreneurship at Edinburgh Napier continue to develop the curriculum to ensure it is of our time. The launching of the Masters degree in Entrepreneurial Leadership, a UK first, is testimony to their entrepreneurial thinking, but more importantly action. • Tell us your goals and well help you reach themThe success of Edinburgh Napier postgraduates takes many forms. First there is employment. For example, on our MSc in Creative Advertising, students are often in employment before their course even finishes.

Then there is self-employment. Our Moffat Centre and Bright Red Ventures incubators have hatched more than 250 businesses.

And then there are awards. In 2014 Masters students from the School of Arts and Creative Industries won global and national awards including categories at the prestigious D&AD New Blood Awards, and the prize for Best Overall Project; and commendations and medals at the Creative Conscience Awards.

Such awards recognise individual excellence but also the innovative and practical back-up that we provide to students from all over the world. We will nurture your ambitions and support your success whether you want to win awards, set up your own business, change profession, or find a great job.

Pioneering projects to inspire your own career plansEdinburgh Napier staff are at the cutting-edge of their industries. They pass on this expertise, equipping you for the careers of the future, and alerting you to new entrepreneurial possibilities both in Scotland and overseas.

Current collaborations between Edinburgh Napier staff and external organisations include: In the first initiative of its kind

in the UK, staff at our Cyber Security Lab are training Scottish police officers to tackle cybercrime, through a specially created advanced Digital Investigator course. The University has been made Scotlands Cybercrime Centre of Excellence, part of the European C2 network.

The School of Life, Sport & Social Sciences is the biomechanics partner for the R&A, the governing body of golf for most of the world.

Our Leadership in Compassionate Care project has spearheaded national and international thinking on this vital element of nursing practice. The Centre works with the health service in Scotland, and its work has been showcased at international conferences.

We joined with public sector bodies to set up a new mountain biking centre at Glentress in the Scottish Borders. The Centre will act as a focal point for training research and support for commercial opportunities in mountain biking.

All our postgraduate courses are designed to develop students for a career in the industry. Employer links are a key aspect of any programme.

  • A passport to a job in engineeringWhen you choose an engineering programme, you want to be sure it will satisfy the current and future requirements of employers around the world. So how do you check this?

One way is to look for the Engineering Council accreditation. After all, this is what many employers seek, both in the UK and beyond. The accreditation - which youll see on numerous Edinburgh Napier postgraduate programmes - shows that your degree meets the highest standards set by the engineering profession.

It also shows that on top of technical knowledge, youll have experience of teamwork, design, and all the other professional skills youll immediately need to demonstrate in the engineering workplace.

  • Pioneering research is changing lives locally and globally

At Edinburgh Napier, the strength of our taught postgraduate programmes is complemented by a broad range of academic research that is benefitting people and places across the world.

Like our courses, our research is innovative as well as relevant to todays ever-changing world. Our research graduates go on to success in the academic world but also in a diverse range of industries and organisations around the world.

The following pages showcase just three of the projects that Edinburgh Napier has been involved with recently, all of which have had a genuine impact.

  • Social change through sporting spectacle With eight years until kick-off of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the Business School at Edinburgh Napier is working with Stenden University Qatar on a project which aims to help promote healthier living in a society with relatively low levels of exercise and high rates of obesity and associated health problems.

Were identifying opportunities to influence behaviour. We believe learnings will deliver an immediate benefit in Qatar itself, and go on to inform future policy far beyond the countrys borders, says Dr Eleni Theodoraki.

The project will also encourage Qataris to adopt greener behaviours. The team is working with local health authorities, physical educators, city planners and environmental agencies.

One of the cornerstones is the adoption of a healthy lifestyle amongst the Qatari nationals, an aim we all hope to fulfil with the contribution of the project, says Dr Sohair Abul-Haija, Academic Dean of Stenden.

PROBLEM SOLVERSOur researchers help solve problems whether helping companies turn their waste into biofuel or making supermarket delivery vans greener.Theyre working with Scottish Enterprise to help develop leadership skills in the tourism sector; with Police Scotland to train detectives in the latest cybercrime techniques; and with health charities to tackle Crohns and other diseases. Those close relationships with the private, public and third sectors inform our teaching and research to the benefit of our students.

  • Sustaining a national delicacyDr Karen Diele of Edinburgh Napiers School of Life, Sports & Social Sciences has been leading projects studying the ecological role and the artisanal fishery of Brazilian caranguejo-u crabs. These crabs are a key species in the mangrove forests that grow at the interface between land and sea and help sustain a productive ecosystem. This crab is also a national delicacy, and theres a lucrative market supplied by local crab fishermen.

Her research has been instrumental in improving fisheries legislation aimed at the sustainable use of this species, which is also a major interest to fishermen and the wider community. Working with Dr Anders Schmidt and other Brazilian collaborators, she has now established a North to South mass mate-searching monitoring network to help improve the temporal placement of crab capture bans.

My research addresses many applied questions that are of direct interest to the local people. Working closely with fishermen and managers to deliver solutions has been a great experience, says Dr Diele.

For further details of our recent research successes, see Impact, our new research magazine that is available online here: www.napier.ac.uk/research

Building on a thin membraneResearchers from the Universitys Institute for Sustainable Construction have been working with Icopal UK Ltd the worlds leading geomembrane specialists since 2008. Thin membranes may not look like much theyre mostly industrial textiles and other material supplied in rolls, and when theyre in place, theyre completely hidden from sight but they can have a profound impact on the performance of a building.

Together theyve developed a range of revolutionary thin membrane vibration isolators to reduce noise levels and heat loss through cavity walls. Several patents have been granted, leading to nine new products reaching the market.

More than 15,000 homes have already been built using these innovative products, delivering cost savings to the industry of over 80 million.

Another initiative by Edinburgh Napier thats helping homeowners sleep soundly is Robust Details, a noise limitation scheme company formed from research by the Universitys Building Performance Centre.

Its led to a four-fold drop in noise-related complaints in new-build homes, and is utilised in over 700,000 homes in the UK. In recognition, the Centre was awarded a Queens Anniversary Prize, says Professor Sean Smith.

A CityTHAT DOES BUSINESSChoosing to study at Edinburgh Napier University is choosing to live in one of Europes most prosperous and successful cities.

In 2014 an economic survey by Centre for Cities showed that Edinburgh was second only to London in the UK for jobs growth in both the public and private sectors, boasting an increase of 6.5 per cent over two years. It is no surprise when you consider the calibre of employers that have made the city their home. Traditional Scottish companies such as Standard Life, RBS and Scottish Widows have been joined by national and international corporations, including HBOS, Tesco Bank and Diageo, all creating jobs within the city in a huge number of fields.

Added to these financial institutions and fund managers, creative companies such as Rockstar North, maker of the Grand Theft Auto series of videogames, and Hunter, manufacturer of luxury footwear, also call Edinburgh home.

  • Since 1999, Edinburgh has also been a seat of national government, with the Scottish Parliament based at the foot of the citys historic Royal Mile, and the countrys civil servants housed at Victoria Quay in the citys regenerated Leith area.

As well as being a centre for business and government, Edinburgh also has a major tourism industry. With the city a UNESCO World Heritage Site and famous events such as the Edinburgh International Festival, the Fringe Festival and Edinburghs Hogmanay proving hugely popular year after year, the city welcomes around 1.3 million international visitors a year. This in turn has created thousands of permanent and seasonal jobs in the city and led to the expansion of Edinburgh International Airport.

With such a richly diverse selection of employers in the city, and Edinburgh Napiers proud history of links to industry, studying for a postgraduate qualification in Scotlands capital means you can put yourself in pole position for gaining employment both while you study and once you graduate to begin your own career. And with average earnings in the capital second only to London in the UK, coming to Edinburgh could be a financially astute move.

  • A CityTHAT IS NATURALLY STUNNINGWith an iconic skyline that includes an extinct volcano and a famous castle, Edinburgh also benefits from numerous green spaces and excellent air quality.

Currently studying Intercultural Business Communication at Edinburgh Napier, MSc student Johanna Westhauser has set herself an unusual challenge to ensure she gets a healthy work-life balance.

At least once a day, I need to see the Castle, which is great as you can see it from so many different parts of the city.Wherever you go in Edinburgh, a UNESCO World Heritage site, there is always a new and inspiring view just around the corner. Edinburgh Napiers own three campuses all boast views across the city, whether youre enjoying a seat on the grass outside Craiglockhart, having a tutorial on one of the top floors at Merchiston or some quiet study time in Sighthills fifth floor library with its stunning floor-to-ceiling windows.

One thing youll notice from any viewpoint in Edinburgh is the proliferation of green space in the city centre. Princes Street Gardens, the Royal Botanic Garden and the Meadows are three of the more famous green sites in the city but there 140 other public parks so no matter where you study and live, youll never be far from some fresh air and recreational space. This is one reason that Edinburgh has the lowest level of air pollution of any major city in the UK, according to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

Youre also never far from water in Edinburgh. The Water of Leith and its accompanying walkway meander through the city for just under 13 miles. The path, which you can enjoy on foot or by bike, takes you from the western suburbs, through the city centre and out to the Firth of Forth at Leith. Along the way, look out for flora and fauna including wild garlic, orchids, trout, herons, kingfishers and otters as well as quaint parts of the city such as Dean Village and Stockbridge.

The Union Canal also runs through the western side of the city, passing right beside our new state-of-the-art student accommodation at Bainfield. You can cycle, walk, run or even row along this peaceful stretch of water. However, if you more associate water with the beach, Portobello lies to the east of the city, a short bus journey from the city centre. Here you can enjoy a traditional British seaside experience with sand, sea, ice cream and fish and chips a mini-holiday away from university life.

School of Engineering & The Built Environment

    MSc Timber Engineering

Timber is, in many respects, the ideal construction material, particularly in terms of its structural attributes and environmental efficiency. There is an increasing demand to use timber as a building material, which has created the need for qualified engineers with specialised knowledge and appropriate expertise in this area. You will learn the principles of designing a timber structure, particularly considering the nature of the material itself and its properties.

Timber is becoming increasingly popular as a sustainable construction material, creating more and more opportunities for engineers who want to work with this unique resource. This course, the only one of its kind in the UK, meets a demand for suitably qualified construction professionals by developing the diverse range of skills of those that are already in, or would like to enter the timber industry.

Youll develop the ability to analyse, design and assess timber structural systems and assemblies as well as useful transferable skills in presentation.

This degree is accredited as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) for candidates who have already acquired an Accredited CEng (Partial), BEng (Hons) or an Accredited IEng (Full) BEng/BSc (Hons) undergraduate first degree.

Subjects IncludeTimber Analysis & Design 1 & 2; Sustainable Building Design; Timber Materials & Applications; Timber Form & Construction; Project Management. MSc students complete a dissertation in addition to the taught elements.

Career Prospects Youll become a competent and resourceful timber engineer, equipped with the relevant training in analysis, design and assessment of timber structural systems. This both satisfies the needs of the timber industry and meets the academic requirements appropriate for chartered membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Structural Engineers, the Institute of Highway Engineers and the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation. This means you will not only graduate with a postgraduate degree but a highly respected professional qualification.

  • The Business School at Craiglockhart is a really good learning environment.

  • I loved my undergraduate course at Edinburgh Napier. I was working for HSBC and they let me work for them part-time while I did my studies. Theres a lot of practical experience here - some universities have a lot of Professors who have never worked in the industry so its more just theory all the time whereas here you get a lot of practical experience.

The Business School at Craiglockhart is a really good learning environment because its open plan but not noisy theres just a sort of hum about it. My lecturers are all really approachable you can always knock on their door any time and Ive also been assigned a personal development tutor that I have regular meetings with.

Teaching was always something Id wanted to do so I emailed the university recruitment office to find out what I needed to do to bridge the

gap between industry and teaching and they put me in contact with the group subject leader. I met him for a coffee and he said: Yes, this is definitely something you should do.

I also work for Bright Red Triangle where Im a junior consultant. Ive been doing market research projects for them including one for the catering industry in the US and the UK. An equity company had been approached by a software company for a 250,000 investment for catering software and they wanted me to look at the industry.

Hopefully if I do get a role as a lecturer, one of things Id be doing is teaching overseas so Im really excited about that. Its the universitys links that will allow me to do that as my faculty teaches in China and Hong Kong.

  • Academic Profile

Alun Fotheringham Senior Lecturer and Senior Teaching Fellow, Accounting, Financial Services & Law

Alun Fotheringham worked in the public sector before coming to Edinburgh Napier. His experience and use of real-life business examples help prepare students for the boardroom

  • In our postgraduate teaching, we use real-world examples. For example, we might have an ethical discussion on directors bonuses and link that to the banks. Are they doing anything wrong? Were getting students to think about how they would approach these issues from a theoretical perspective but using different models to think about them in different ways. This is particularly important when you come to the boardroom and youll have a number of people all coming from different perspectives.

Some of the scenarios I use in the ethics class are based on the public sector. Professional bodies publish case studies to get members to think about how they would approach accounting issues so I use some of these examples from current professional practice. Rather than it just being textbook-led, were drawing on real life.

Its great to be based in Edinburgh. We have the Scottish Parliament, from which Ive drawn examples, as well as the finance sector.

Many of the students in my class are international, including from China, Germany, Poland and the USA. These different backgrounds make for interesting classroom discussions. We also deliver our undergraduate programme in Hong Kong so were quite used to cultural differences and expectations.

Its great to be based in Edinburgh. We have the Scottish Parliament, from which Ive drawn examples, as well as the finance sector. Some students have already worked in that sector and have decided to top up and do a Masters, sometimes on a part-time basis, to give them opportunities for promotion. Some students have an undergraduate degree in physics but now want a finance focus to open up further job opportunities.

The feedback I get from students is that they feel the staff at Edinburgh Napier know them. Were approachable, we know what were doing and were using up-to-date real-life examples so were able to help students apply the theoretical aspects of accounting to real life practice.

  • Im writing my dissertation about a company I worked for in Pakistan, where my father also worked. When he was working there, there was no proper HR department but when I started, HR was flourishing so I thought it would be a good idea to look at how it changed. My programme leader really liked the idea and said I should go ahead with it - Ive even interviewed my father for it as an ex-employee and employees who are there now. Its an opportunity to compare approaches to HR in the West to those in the East.

I was mentally prepared for the cultural shock of moving here and I had a fair idea that the educational system would be quite different so I coped well. Its great that almost all my fellow students are international students. There are only 11 of us in the group and they are from countries like the Netherlands, Nigeria, Angola, Greece, and Poland.

Some of my cousins have studied here so I knew the name Napier. The lecturers are very good and weve had interesting guest speakers including one who talked about criminal psychology and how criminals are inducted back into employment which was very interesting.

Ive enjoyed every moment of studying here at Craiglockhart. I dont have to wait for anything all the books have been readily available and the library staff are very helpful as well. Edinburgh is nice. The first time I came here it took me 20 minutes to get from the bus stop to here as I was stopping every step of the way to look at the greenery and the scenery!
