about imperial

World leading research

part of our founding mission is to make a demonstrable economic and social impact, through the translation of our work into practice worldwide. imperial is particularly well known for its support of interdisciplinary research, with funding, infrastructure and cultural encouragement to bring researchers together across the disciplines to explore different approaches to solving a problem.

For example, in 2012 we opened the £66m imperial centre for translational and experimental medicine. this flagship facility has space for up to 450 scientists to accelerate the translation of scientific discoveries into new ways of preventing, diagnosing and treating diseases. We are also one of three university partners in the new Francis crick institute, which will bring together multidisciplinary research expertise from leading scientific and academic organisations.

Within the university sector, imperial has led the way in technology transfer and commercialisation of ideas, providing the support and infrastructure to set up businesses and license technologies, helping our research to reach the people who need and want it. Working with imperial innovations, we have created spin-out companies that have gone on to raise over £600m since 2006.

the college also invests in other ways of bringing your research to life to increase its impact. For example, postgraduate students make a significant contribution to the annual imperial Festival and Fringe programmes. these engage more than 12,000 people with our work through a series of hands-on, interactive demonstrations, talks and performances (see pages 10–11).

as a postgraduate student at the college, you will be joining a critical mass of world leading researchers who share ideas, expertise and technology to find answers to the big scientific questions and tackle global challenges.

bodydoubleparts of a car’s bodywork could double up as its battery, thanks to a new material being developed by imperial engineers and scientists and european Union partners, including Volvo. the material can store and discharge electrical energy, and it is also strong and light enough to be used for parts in future hybrid vehicles, to make them lighter, more compact and more energy efficient.

the researchers have recently used the material to create a prototype car boot.

climate change across the ages

climate change five million years ago may have caused one of antarctica’s huge ice sheets to partially melt and sea levels to rise by approximately 20 metres, according to research by dr tina van de Flierdt from the department of earth Science and engineering and colleagues from other international universities.

they lived on a research vessel in the Southern ocean off antarctica for nine weeks as part of the integrated ocean drilling program. they drilled in waters up to four kilometres deep and into sediment up to one kilometre beneath the sea floor, to explore the past of the east antarctic ice sheet – the largest ice mass on earth, roughly the size of australia.

Back on dry land, dr van de Flierdt and carys cook, a phd student in the grantham institute – climate change and the environment, analysed the samples and deduced that the ice sheet had been much more sensitive to climate change in the past than was previously realised.

Understanding this ancient glacial melting may give insights into how sea levels could rise as a consequence of current climate change. carbon dioxide concentrations then were similar to those found now and global temperatures were comparable to those predicted for the end of this century.

robot repairs from the air

a team of imperial aeronautics researchers and postgraduate students has developed the world’s first flying 3d printer, using off-the-shelf parts, which spits out foam to build simple structures and carry out repairs from the air. the robot’s underbelly contains two canisters of chemicals that create polyurethane foam, as well as a printing module.

the team hope the robot could ultimately be used for repairs and construction in hostile environments, such as patching up damaged offshore wind farms or sealing up leaks in nuclear power plants. additionally, the printer can create grippers that stick onto objects and make them transportable, potentially enabling the robot to pick up and remove bombs, or dispose of hazardous materials like radioactive waste from crippled reactors.

gene therapy for parKinson’s

a new gene therapy for parkinson’s disease has achieved promising results in its first human tests.

the approach was first devised by professor nicholas mazarakis (medicine) in 1997. Fifteen patients have now received the treatment, which uses a modified virus to deliver three genes into the striatum, a part of the brain that controls movement. the genes are intended to boost the production of dopamine, a chemical that becomes deficient in people with parkinson’s.

trial participants underwent a single operation to inject the virus into the brain. their scores on movement tests improved on average by 30 per cent, and they also reported having a better quality of life. the first patients to have the surgery have now been followed up for four years, and the effect has been sustained, according to a study in The Lancet. the treatment has been safe, with no serious adverse effects.

neW trial for potential hiv curea ground-breaking trial is underway at imperial to test a possible cure for HiV infection.

past efforts to cure HiV have been thwarted by the virus’s ability to lie dormant inside blood cells without being detected. the new therapy combines standard antiretroviral drugs with two new weapons: a drug that reactivates dormant HiV, and a vaccine that induces the immune system to destroy the infected cells.

the trial will involve 50 patients in the early stages of HiV infection and it is a collaboration between imperial and four other UK universities. the researchers hope that within months, the stores of hidden HiV in these patients – called the HiV reservoir – will be significantly reduced. the results are expected in 2017.

noisyneighboursRisks of hospital admissions and deaths from stroke and heart disease are higher in areas with high levels of aircraft noise, according to a study published in the British Medical Journal.

Researchers at Imperial and King’s College London compared data on day- and night-time aircraft noise with hospital admissions and mortality rates among a population of 3.6 million people living near Heathrow airport.

The risks were around 10 to 20 per cent higher in areas with highest levels of aircraft noise compared with the areas with least noise. The researchers say more work is needed to establish the exact relationship between noise and ill health.

statins shoW promiseagainst multiple sclerosis

doctors hoping for a treatment that can abate the advanced stages of multiple sclerosis (mS) may already have one in their medicine cabinets. Statins, which millions take daily to lower cholesterol, appear to have a beneficial impact in patients with secondary progressive mS, according to a study by imperial researchers in The Lancet.

in a two-year clinical trial involving 140 patients, simvastatin was found to slow brain shrinkage, which is thought to contribute to patients’ impairments. patients on simvastatin also achieved better scores on movement tests and questionnaires that assess disability than patients taking a placebo. the next step is a larger study with a greater number of patients, to investigate the therapy’s effectiveness more fully.

artificial yeast

imperial researchers are building a man-made chromosome, the UK’s contribution to the first entirely artificial yeast.

Scientists hope to complete the synthetic genome by 2017, and use it to design new strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast that go beyond their current ability to produce beer and bread. the new yeasts will be able to create valuable chemicals, antibiotics, vaccines or biofuels.

imperial is one of the world leaders in the field of synthetic biology, where researchers re-engineer cells to develop microscopic devices that can be used to address a range of global challenges. the college is home to a £24 million centre called Synbicite that aims to speed up the development of these technologies.

Synbicite is a national resource, involving researchers from a further 17 universities and academic institutions across the UK as well as 13 industrial partners, including the research arms of microsoft, Shell and glaxoSmithKline.

combating malaria With male mozziesimperial life scientists have modified mosquitoes to produce sperm that will only create males, pioneering a fresh approach to eradicating malaria.

their genetic method distorts the sex ratio of Anopheles gambiae mosquitoes, the main transmitters of the malaria parasite, so that the female mosquitoes that bite and pass the disease to humans are no longer produced. this is the first time that scientists have been able to manipulate the sex ratios of mosquito populations.

in the first laboratory tests, the method created a fully fertile mosquito strain that produced 95 per cent male offspring. the researchers introduced the genetically modified mosquitoes to five caged wild-type mosquito populations. they reported in Nature Communications that in four of the five cages, the entire population was eliminated within six generations, because of the lack of females.

the hope is that if this could be replicated in the wild, this would ultimately cause local malaria-carrying mosquito populations to crash.

on callImperial MBA students won the top prize of £10,000 in the annual Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Design Business Plan Competition with their plan to improve access to healthcare in Uganda using mobile phones.

Team SasaDoc have developed a service which will allow Ugandans to receive medical consultations over the phone, paying a fee to connect to the service via a text message. A portion of the revenue generated will then be used to fund projects that aim to improve access to doctors and healthcare for Ugandans who cannot afford to pay.

light into matterimperial physicists have discovered how to create matter from light – a feat thought impossible when the idea was first theorised decades ago. in just one day over several cups of coffee in a tiny office in imperial’s Blackett physics laboratory, phd student oliver pike and two colleagues worked out a way to physically prove a theory devised by scientists Breit and Wheeler in 1934.

Breit and Wheeler suggested that it should be possible to turn light into matter by smashing together only two particles of light (photons), to create an electron and a positron – the simplest method of turning light into matter ever predicted. the calculation was found to be theoretically sound but Breit and Wheeler said that they never expected anybody to physically demonstrate their prediction.

the imperial team have devised a ‘photon-photon collider’ to bring Breit and Wheeler’s theory to life, using technology that is already available, which they described in a paper in Nature Photonics. it would recreate a process that was important in the first 100 seconds of the universe and that is also seen in gamma ray bursts, which are the biggest explosions in the universe and one of physics’ greatest unsolved mysteries.

mission to Jupiter

in 2022, a new spacecraft is expected to set off for an eight-year journey to Jupiter, where it will explore the planet’s icy moons and provide fresh insights into the ‘waterworlds’ orbiting the giant planets in our solar system and beyond.

imperial’s professor michele dougherty led the proposal for the Jupiter icy moons explorer (JUice), which is funded by the european Space agency. She is one of a fifteen-strong Science Study team from institutions across europe.

the primary target of the mission is the solar system’s largest moon, ganymede, an icy world slightly larger than the planet mercury that is unique within the solar system. ganymede is thought to harbour a deep ocean under the icy crust, has its own internally generated magnetic field, and has an ancient surface littered with more individual types of crater than anywhere else in the solar system.

ganymede may represent a whole class of potentially habitable environments in our galaxy. JUice will carry experiments designed to study the sub-surface ocean, the geology and composition of the surface, and its interaction with its plasma environment. the spacecraft will also investigate Jupiter’s other icy worlds, callisto and europa, as well as the giant planet’s complex atmosphere and extended magnetosphere.

Just liKe a dream

our brains display a similar pattern of activity during dreams as they do during a mind-expanding drug trip, according to researchers from the department of medicine.

little is known about what happens in the brain when people take psychedelic drugs. professor david nutt (the edmond J. Safra chair in neuropsychopharmacology), dr Robin carhart-Harris, and international colleagues examined the brain effects of the psychedelic chemical in magic mushrooms, called psilocybin, using data from brain scans of volunteers who had been injected with the drug. their study, published in Human Brain Mapping, found that under psilocybin, activity in the brain network linked to emotional thinking became more pronounced, with several different areas in this network active at the same time. this pattern of activity is similar to that observed in people who are dreaming. the volunteers also had more disjointed and uncoordinated activity in the brain network that is linked to high-level thinking.

spot the differenceResearchers in the Institute of Security Science and Technology are exploring how you can spot unusual activity on social media sites such as Twitter, and what patterns of activity might precede a major criminal or terrorist event, with a view to helping governments to combat organised crime and extremism. Institute scientists have used similar techniques to help banks to detect fraudulent activity on credit cards, creating sophisticated systems to spot anomalies.

data scienceSince 2012, the world has produced more data than in all prior human history. Researchers at Imperial’s Data Science Institute, which launched in 2014, are aiming to unleash the huge potential of all this information.

Insights from large, complex data sets are crucial for medical innovation, disease prevention, climate change research, the analysis of financial markets and consumer behaviour, and the development of cities that can accommodate fast-growing populations. The Institute is underpinning multidisciplinary collaborations between the College’s academic experts and research partners to create new solutions in these and other complex areas.

You should also be aware of funding deadlines, particularly if you are planning to apply for any College awards (see pages 92–93).

You can apply for up to two programmes on the application form. Your first choice will be processed first. Your second choice will only be considered if your application for your first choice is unsuccessful. For more information about how to apply to Imperial using our online application system see pages 86–87.

teaching stylemaster’s level study involves learning new technical skills, and requires you to think about concepts and methods more critically and more deeply. You will still attend lectures, seminars and labs (if appropriate to your subject). However you will be expected to spend much of your time working independently or in groups, and group work may form part of your assessment.

Your lecturers will teach on the programme; give you reading lists; make support materials available; set practicals, formal and less formal assessments; offer research projects (although for some courses you may be expected to develop ideas about these yourself); and give you feedback on your progress in various ways. You need to take these opportunities and shape them to your own needs and interests.

study intensitymaster’s level study is a progression from undergraduate work and is usually more specialised, interdisciplinary, or orientated to a specific profession. it is also more intellectually demanding and challenging than undergraduate study. the pace of lecturing is likely to be significantly faster; you will be expected to undertake more directed background reading during the course; and you will be expected to arrive at solutions for yourself.

most of our master’s degrees are available on a full-time basis and normally last 12 months with little break. this requires a commitment to a sustained period of intensive work right from the start. there are also some two and three year part-time programmes (see pages 96–99 for details).

most postgraduate students feel under time pressure at some point. this is normal and is a reflection of the intensity and amount of work to undertake. the graduate Students’ Union and the graduate School organise lots of events throughout the year to help you maintain a good work–life balance.

doing paid WorK While you are studyingour degrees are very demanding so we recommend that full-time students do not take up part-time work during term-time. if this is unavoidable we advise you to work no more than 10–15 hours per week, which should be principally at weekends.

training and supportYour course director, personal tutor (for larger courses) and lecturers are the first point of contact for help and support in your studies. they can, for example, set up additional study opportunities, such as extra reading, teaching or online study. We also encourage you to take advantage of any training opportunities, like the graduate School’s masterclass programme. these courses are specifically designed to develop the personal and professional skills of master’s level students (see page 40). the library also offers one-to-one or group training sessions to develop your search skills (see page 62).

every department has a staff–student committee, where elected representatives from the student body input into the teaching that takes place within the department. We also have a college-wide support network to look after your general wellbeing (see pages 64–66).

all new postgraduate students are invited to attend Welcome Week at the start of their first term. this includes a programme of activities, talks and events for postgraduates to introduce you to college life, current students and staff.

research proJectWe place great emphasis on the integration of our master’s level courses with our world class research portfolio. Your degree will normally include a significant piece of research that will be submitted as a report or dissertation. You may also undergo a viva (oral examination) on your work. mRes students may undertake more than one project, with this component accounting for more than 50 per cent of the final degree award.

the quality of your own understanding, thinking and initiative are very important in the research project. You will pose questions and seek answers by using and applying techniques and research skills, analysing data and reviewing literature.

on most programmes there is a period of several months with little scheduled teaching when the bulk of the research project is carried out, requiring you to plan your time effectively.

Your project will normally be supervised by an academic member of staff. However, they may delegate some of the day-to-day supervision to a member of their team, such as a phd student, who can give you more practical advice.

as a doctoral student it is normal to spend a lot of time working alone, since the precise topic of your thesis is unique to you. But we work hard to make sure there is support for you to draw on at every point, from team-based training provided by the graduate School to a college-wide network of professional support services to help you meet the challenges along the way.

as a doctoral student, you will be embarking on one of the most intensive study experiences of your academic career so far. our master’s courses are excellent preparation for doctoral study, which gives you the chance to focus in depth on a particular area of interest.

doctoral study

‘ Doing a PhD is completely different from doing a BSc. You are required to work alone, come up with ideas and be motivated and organised without necessarily having someone telling you what to do. You don’t have one text book that you have to study from in order to do well at the exams. You have to think on your own about what steps are needed to find the solution to a problem that has not been encountered before.’ dr androula alekou completed her phd in High energy physics in 2012 and worked as a fellow at ceRn in Switzerland.

So much data is generated by experiments at the large Hadron collider at ceRn in geneva that ceRn has chosen to spread the workload to computing centres and researchers around the world, including at imperial.

what this is the most common kind of doctoral programme. normally it takes three years full-time to complete, the majority of which is spent carrying out original research. career path extremely diverse, both within and outside academia. often followed by further research as a post-doctoral researcher within a university.

types of phdthe majority of imperial’s phd students attend the college on a full-time basis. However, some choose to attend part-time, involving one to three days of study per week.

other different kinds of phd are also available:

Joint phdsour Joint phd scheme gives you the chance to draw on the research facilities and expertise available at imperial and one of our partner universities overseas. We currently have opportunities with: the University of Hong Kong (HKU); nanyang technological University (ntU); the national University of Singapore (nUS); and, in the field of aeronautics, the University of São paulo in Brazil. Joint phd students will divide their time between imperial and the partner institution, with a supervisor from each university. the final degree is awarded jointly by both institutions.

partner research institution scheme (pri)if you work in a public research institution, industrial research laboratory or at another university then you may be able to register for a phd at imperial but carry out the research where you work, under our partner research institution (pRi) scheme.

You should expect to spend at least two months per year at the college and the qualification is awarded by imperial only. one of our major pRi schemes is with Singapore’s agency for Science, technology and Research (a*StaR), which involves two years of study in Singapore and two years in london.

applying for doctoral studythe process of searching and applying for funding and preparing a research application can be a long one so give yourself plenty of time to do a good job – ideally at least a year before you intend to start your studies.

one of the most common types of phd study at imperial is via ‘studentships’. these are externally funded projects in defined areas of research, which come with a named supervisor (who has secured the funding) in a particular department, centre or institute.

Before applying for one of these opportunities, you should:

f do your homework: find out more about the research project by reading journal articles published by the supervisor and members of the research group.

f contact the supervisor directly for more information about the research project and to find out what’s expected of potential candidates.

f prepare a research proposal (see right) with the supervisor and be prepared to take their comments on board.

it’s important to gain support for your application from the supervisor before making a formal application to the college. See pages 86–87 for more information on how to apply.

While studentships usually have a fixed application deadline, many of our departments also welcome applications all year round from suitably qualified candidates:

f Find out which research groups are working in your area of interest – remember, many of imperial’s centres and institutes span multiple subject areas.

f Read the research profiles of our staff online to identify potential supervisors and make sure that their expertise fits with your ideas.

f contact the potential supervisor directly to discuss your idea. they’ll want to know more about you too, as they’re investing in you as much as your idea, so it’s appropriate to also send a copy of your cV/resumé.

f if the supervisor is interested in working with you, you’ll need to formalise your idea as a research proposal (see below).

f if the supervisor agrees to support your application they may be able to help you source funding. You can also use sites like www.researchresearch.com to identify current funding opportunities (this is a subscription site – if you’re currently at university, you should check whether your institution has a site licence, which will allow you to search for free from computers on the university network).

Find out more about phds at imperial:www.imperial.ac.uk/registry/researchdegrees/usefulinformation

Writing a research proposalYour research proposal should define a clear research question and you should be prepared to explain how this contributes to and develops (or challenges) any existing theories in the field.

it’s important to tailor your proposal to the department you’re applying to. different departments may also have different format requirements (e.g. word limit, content) so it’s important to discuss these with your potential supervisor in advance.

For more general advice on how to write a good proposal, see:www.findaphd.com/advice/finding/ writing-phd-research-proposal.aspx

our research approachWe place a lot of importance on interdisciplinary working and the need to establish peer groups across subject boundaries. the graduate School and your department can help with this by organising development activities that bring together students from across the college for knowledge sharing.

We’re a global university with many international partners. there will be opportunities for you to develop global research skills via our international summer schools which provide opportunities to collaborate with peers from partner institutions, including the massachusetts institute of technology (mit) (see page 41).

planning your timeif you’re studying full-time you should aim to complete your phd in 36 months and submit your thesis for examination no later than 48 months from the date of initial registration. to stay on track, you must complete your research plan within the first three months in consultation with your supervisor, whom you will meet regularly.

in the early stage (0–9 months), you will undertake an assessment which involves the submission of a written report and an oral examination on the report. the graduate School provides training in key skills such as presenting, statistics, writing and personal effectiveness that will help you prepare.

in the mid-stage (9–18 months), you will continue with your programme of research and should take the opportunity to undertake further professional skills training in advanced writing and presenting, career planning, and maintaining motivation and independence. around the end of your second year, you will undertake a late stage assessment (18–24 months), conducted by your department, which will test whether you have a realistic research plan in place for successfully completing the programme.

throughout the programme, you will take a full part in academic life, attending seminars and presenting your research both within the college and at national and international conferences.

teaching opportunitiesmany phd students across the college are involved with the teaching, supervision and assessment of both undergraduate and master’s students.

Working as a graduate teaching assistant (gta) provides you with an opportunity to broaden your experience, and develop further skills such as writing and communicating convey complex technical concepts.

acting as a gta can help improve your own technical abilities (both theoretical and practical). it also enables you to broaden your knowledge base and gain communication and task management experience.

the graduate School and the college’s educational development Unit have worked together to develop a new graduate teaching assistant training programme (StaR). StaR provides phd students with the chance to obtain associate Fellowship of the Higher education academy – a qualification that is increasingly sought by employers across the education sector.

centres for doctoral trainingcentres for doctoral training (cdt) represent a fresh approach to doctoral study, delivering four-year, cohort-based programmes, which aim to smooth the transition between undergraduate study and the challenge of a phd. imperial is home to 12 engineering and physical Sciences Research council-funded cdts that bring together diverse areas of expertise. See page 37 for details.

your thesisthe main activity of any research programme will be to carry out an original research project under the direction of one or more supervisors, to be written up as a thesis.

Your supervisor will read your thesis thoroughly and make constructive comments on both style and intellectual content before you submit it.

Your thesis will be examined by a minimum of two examiners: one from within the college and one from academia, industry or another profession. You will also be invited to defend your work in a viva (oral examination) with examiners.

the graduate School will support you throughout your programme of study by providing training in thesis writing and preparing for the viva. the careers Service also offers lots of practical support, from searching for jobs to preparing for interviews.

about imperial

the soaring presence of the Queen’s tower at our South Kensington campus is a reminder of the college’s history and heritage.

For our students, it plays a much more everyday role as a place to meet, to catch up with friends and to soak up the sun on the steps, flanked by the two stone lions that stand guard at its base.

our campuses

South Kensington is our main campus and it is here that most postgraduate activity takes place.

it’s a compact site in the heart of ‘albertopolis’ (see pages 56–57) and it has witnessed much expansion over the years – noticeable in the huge range of architectural styles you’ll see across campus, from the edwardian Royal School of mines building to the ultra-modern, norman Foster-designed Business School.

there’s plenty of green space too, including a beautiful landscaped square and our very own ‘secret garden’ with a space dedicated to herbs, fruit trees, flowers and vegetables planted by our environmental Society.

south Kensington campus

From our South Kensington base where the college was founded in 1907, imperial’s expertise now spreads across nine campuses. each campus brings together students and staff from around the globe, whose original work may one day go on to change the world. it’s prime sightseeing land, so you may find yourself rubbing shoulders with tourists on exhibition Road on the approach to campus, though you have the advantage of being able to visit these attractions at your leisure. the busyness of the area and its beautifully maintained surroundings also make it feel really safe.

Imperial and its neighbours form the beating heart of ‘Albertopolis’, the realisation of Prince Albert’s vision for an area where science and the arts would come together. More than 100 years of history have done nothing to diminish this legacy: today engineering meets design in our double Master’s degrees with the Royal College of Art; taxonomy meets biodiversity in our joint Master’s course with the Natural History Museum; and all of our students see their time at Imperial come to a spectacular close with graduation ceremonies at the Royal Albert Hall.

don’t fear if you’re an international student seeking an authentic British experience, however, as the city is brimming with Britishness, from its four UneSco World Heritage sites (the tower of london, maritime greenwich, Westminster palace and the Royal Botanic gardens at Kew), spanning hundreds of years of British history, to its many royal attractions, including Kensington palace within walking distance of campus.

travel london’s comprehensive transport network makes it easy to get around. options include the tube, dlR, overground, trams, buses, ferries, and even a cable car. and with many buses (and, from 2015, some weekend tubes) running 24 hours a day, a taxi home is usually a luxury rather than a necessity. You can get 30 per cent off adult rate travelcards and Bus and tram passes with an 18+ Student oyster photocard – see: www.tfl.gov.uk/photocard.

cycling is increasingly popular as a way to stay fit and save money. We have secure cycle storage on campus and you can buy locks at a heavily discounted price from our Security Service. london is also home to an extensive pay-as-you-go bike hire scheme. You can use our imperial mobile app to find the nearest available bikes.

there’s no better time to experience life in london than as a student with discounts on everything from clothes to travel. and the even better news is that life on a student budget doesn’t mean sacrificing your social life as many of the city’s best attractions are cheap or free (see pages 84–85).

theatreWith over 40 theatres in the West end alone, plus a huge choice of fringe venues, london is world famous for its theatre. musicals are a mainstay of the city’s theatreland, but its dramas and comedies also draw much critical acclaim.

Back on campus, our students are keen to uphold the city’s dramatic tradition. imperial college dramatic Society (dramSoc) performs at least two major productions each year while our musical theatre Society sings and dances its way through an annual musical. auditions are open to all and if you prefer to stay out of the limelight, there are opportunities for you to have a go at set design, lighting and sound, costume, props, and make-up.

cinemaif london feels familiar, it’s probably because you’ve spent years exploring its streets on the big screen. the city’s iconic scenery makes it a top filming location, from portobello Road market in Notting Hill to the deserted Westminster Bridge in 28 Days Later.

With close to 800, london is home to over a fifth of all of the UK’s cinema screens so you’ll be spoilt for choice. the city also regularly attracts Hollywood’s biggest stars for premieres in leicester Square.

You can make your own contribution to film at imperial by getting involved in the Union’s student-run cinema, with roles ranging from projection to advertising.

the magnificent Hackney empire theatre in east london is one of the city’s many fringe venues.

eating and drinKinglondon’s reputation as a trendsetter is no more evident than in its ever-expanding food scene. Your wallet will no doubt welcome the abundance of discounts in the well-known chains, but in a city where street food from around the world thrives, enjoying new food experiences doesn’t necessarily mean blowing your budget.

and it’s not just street vendors that will tempt you: the city’s huge choice of pop-up restaurants and the explosion of the supper club scene means it’s easy to be adventurous. But don’t worry if you’d prefer to stick with familiar favourites as you can find cuisine from just about every country across the city, including many international supermarkets.

musicpop-up venues, star-studded festivals, free gigs, classical concerts, arena tours – it’s hard to sum up a musical scene which has nurtured such homegrown talents as adele, coldplay, david Bowie and the Rolling Stones, while welcoming acts from all over the world. the huge choice of venues is as diverse as the acts they host, from iconic venues like the Royal albert Hall, the Roundhouse in camden and the o2 academy in Brixton to the thousands of lesser-known pubs and clubs hosting soon-to-be-famous bands.

musicians at imperial will find their talents are well catered for, from music bursaries worth £100 per year towards instrumental or vocal lessons to our free lunchtime professional concert series. the Blyth centre on the South Kensington campus has 11 music practice rooms and the students’ union is home to a wide range of student bands, groups and societies that you can join (see pages 70–71).

the Royal albert Hall, next to imperial college Union, plays host each year to the world’s largest classical music festival, the BBc proms.

imperial students don’t have to go far to find the freshest market fare as a farmers’ market is held at our South Kensington campus every week.

student discountsYour student card is a passport to all kinds of discounts, from cinema tickets to clothes, restaurants to mobile phone deals. many of the catering outlets on campus offer discounts for imperial students, as well as seasonal special offers.

it also pays, when planning your weekly shopping or entertainment, to check out discount sites such as www.studentbeans.com to find the most cost-effective ways of enjoying life in the capital.

student safetyFor a city of its size and population (more than 8 million people), the level of crime in london is relatively low: over three quarters of crime is opportunistic so there are precautions you can take to stay safe.

We have our own Security Service within the college who are dedicated to making our campuses safe places to live and work: we have campus-wide cctV, monitored live by our 24-hour control room staff; access control in all buildings and residences; and an emergency response team on standby at all times. We also work closely with police liaison officers to deliver safety briefings throughout the year and personal safety campaigns with imperial college Union.

Funding your studies

completing a postgraduate qualification at imperial requires a sustained commitment to your studies right from the start. We recommend budgeting for student life well in advance to make sure that funding issues are not a barrier to you getting the most out of your experience.

tuition feesYour tuition fee will cover everything you need to achieve your degree, including the cost of tuition; world class teaching and research facilities; and a comprehensive network of campus services, like professional careers guidance. the cost of tuition is generally subsidised by the UK government for Home/eU students; the fee for overseas (non-eU) students is not subsidised so is higher. if you’re applying for funding, you should budget for a five per cent increase in costs per year. this includes an inflationary increase in your tuition fees, unless otherwise specified.

course depositsapplicants for taught courses and research master’s programmes, who are made an offer from imperial, will be required to pay a deposit as part of the offer condition(s). this will be deducted from the balance of your tuition fees.

living costsit can be costly to live in any big city, but thousands of students move to london each year and, with sensible planning, it is possible to enjoy london life on a budget. this table is a rough guide to the reasonable amounts you should expect to spend to live in comfort, although actual costs will vary according to your lifestyle. estimates cover accommodation, food and travel within london but exclude tuition fees.

if you are studying full-time, you will be exempt from council tax. You can also get a 30 per cent discount on certain transport for london season tickets and travelcards with an 18+ Student oystercard.

the small printprovision of coursesdetails of courses, including ectS units, may change following publication. For up-to-date information, please check the relevant pages on our website.

the college will use all reasonable endeavours to deliver courses in accordance with the descriptions set out on the website. However, it reserves the right to make variations to the content of methods of delivery of courses, to discontinue courses and to merge or combine courses, if such action is reasonably considered to be necessary by the college in the context of its wider purposes. if the college discontinues any course, it will use reasonable endeavours to provide a suitable alternative course.

website redesignWe’re currently working on an exciting redesign of the college website to make it even easier to find the information you need about studying at imperial. the web redesign will involve some restructuring of content which will affect some of the web addresses printed here, though we will ensure that redirects are in place when the new-look site launches at the end of 2014.

equivalent and lower qualificationsFrom 2009–10, the government has withdrawn funding for ‘second degree students’ who are studying for a qualification that is at equivalent or lower level than a qualification that they have already been awarded. this change means that institutions may charge a supplementary fee for such students in order to compensate for the withdrawal of government funding. at present imperial makes no extra charge although this is subject to change.

payment termsall new taught postgraduate entrants will be required to pay a deposit as a condition of their offer. the deposit is set at 10 per cent of the previous year’s course fee and will automatically be deducted from the full fee invoice. an invoice for the deposit, which will clearly show the date by which payment must be made, will be sent to the candidate via email within five working days of their acceptance of a conditional offer. an invoice for the balance of the fees will then be sent to the candidate via email within five working days of full and final (unconditional) acceptance by the college.

For sponsored candidates, receipt of the original of an official letter from the sponsoring organisation, indicating what the sponsorship covers and addressed to imperial college london, will be required. in such cases, different arrangements for payment may apply.

data protectionimperial college london processes certain personal data of its staff and students for standard university administrative processes. any processing of personal data by the college will be made in accordance with the college’s data protection policy and the data protection act 1998.
