POSTGRADUATEopportunitiesLJMU offers an extensive range of postgraduatetaught programmes and research opportunities.

Postgraduate certificates and diplomas may enableyou to secure a professional qualification needed for aparticular career or can act as the initial stages of ataught Masters award.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Education offers youa route into teaching if you already have a degree andmainly focuses on developing your teaching skills. LJMUalso offers some PGCE subject conversion courses.

Our Taught Masters (MA, MSc, PgCert, PgDip, MResand PGCE) build upon your undergraduate knowledgeand skills. These can be studied 12 months full time. Twoyear part-time study options are also available for manycourses. Many courses enable you to select specialistoption modules based on your own interests and all willrequire you to complete a dissertation, an extensive pieceof work based on in-depth research of a particular topic.Some courses are designed for students with little or noacademic experience in the subject area.

The majority of the Master of Research (MRes) isfocused around your individual research project work,

making this the ideal route for people wishing to pursuea research career. You will be assigned a dedicatedacademic mentor who will become your Director ofStudies should you progress to a PhD programme.

Completing an MPhil research programme willrequire you to demonstrate competence in conductingan independent enquiry as well as using appropriateresearch methods and techniques. This award can becompleted between one and four years, depending onwhether you are a full or part-time student.

In order to achieve a Doctorate or PhD qualificationyou will have to show mastery of a specialist field andmake an original personal contribution to theunderstanding of a problem, to the advancement ofknowledge or to the generation of new ideas. Theseawards normally take between three and six years tocomplete, depending on your mode of study.

Studying virology at LJMUhas made me look at thingsdifferently and think morecritically. Now I hope to

inspire my own students todevelop more effectivetreatments for infectiousdiseases in the Philippines.

Rhona Gatpandan-Bergantin teaches physiology, internal medicine and infectiousdiseases at the University of Santo Tomas, Philippines. She completed theMSc Virology via distance learning but travelled to Liverpool to take part inher graduation ceremony.

I had a great experience studyingat LJMU. A PhD is not just aboutresearch, it also involves team

work and problem solving. The annualconference organised by GERIhelped build my confidence inpublic speaking and sharpened my presentation skills. Siew Yan Goh completed her PhD research in LJMU's GeneralEngineering Research Institute (GERI) and is pictured with hersupervisor Dr Andre Batako, who carries out research in theUniversity’s Advanced Manufacturing Technology Research Laboratory.

GRADUATE SCHOOL Whether you need advice on progressing to a PhD, information about examinations andresearch degree regulations or assistance with ethical approval, the Graduate School is onhand to give you the advice and guidance you need to succeed in your research.

The Graduate School provides administrative and training support for research students. A Research Student Induction Day is held six times a year and we also offer a generic skillstraining programme throughout the academic year. Collectively, these sessions will help you todevelop transferable skills and gain worthwhile experience of delivering presentations, reportwriting, viva preparation plus a clear understanding of ethical approval processes and regulations.

Research students at LJMU benefitfrom having access to resourcesacross the University as well asinterdisciplinary dialogue, dedicatedsupport and on-going trainingdesigned to enhance your studies andfuture career as a researcher.

LJMU’s Research Cafés bring established academics,PhD students and early career researchers from allFaculties together to discuss and share their expertise.Such informal events help break down barriers betweendisciplines and encourage new and more diverseresearch networks across the University.

The Tom Reilly Building, housing the School of Sportand Exercise Sciences and the School of NaturalSciences and Psychology, offers some of the bestfacilities in the world. These include appetitelaboratories, neuroscience labs, an indoor 70-metrerunning track, physiology suites, a DEXA scanner formeasuring body fat, muscles and bone density, adriving simulator and a chronobiology lab.

LJMU’s Exhibition Research Centre, located in the JohnLennon Art and Design Building, is devoted to thestudy of exhibitions and supports research in thisoverlooked area of study by organising exhibitions,lectures and other public events.

In addition to all the resources you’d expect in well-equipped scientific/engineering laboratories, LJMU’sGeneral Engineering Research Institute also has anAtomic Force Microscope, Confocal Microscope, WhiteLight Interferometer, Laser Triangulation 3D Sensor, TVHolography (ESPI) System, Dominator AdvancedMachine Tool, Ultramat Advanced Machine Tool and X-Ray Inspection System.

The University has recently invested over £1.6 million indeveloping state-of-the-art practice suites. Facilities forstudents following nursing and health-related degrees nowinclude eight Professional Practice Suites equipped with anextensive range of clinical equipment for simulations andclinical skills development in nursing, paramedic practiceand midwifery plus six purpose built soundproof boothsequipped with video camera and playback facilities.

As well as having access to the University’s extensive printand electronic library collections, LJMU’s SpecialCollections and Archives incorporate an archivesconsultation area, researchers’ work room professionalsound studio plus social space for staff and students. Research Centresand InstitutesLJMU has a reputation for delivering pioneering research that deliverssolutions to some of the most pressing issues facing society today. In order todeliver excellent research we provide researchers with modern facilities andinfrastructure. We strongly encourage multi-disciplinary research and activelysupport collaboration with institutions across the world.

The internationally-acclaimed Astrophysics Research Institute is one ofthe world's leading authorities in Astronomy and Astrophysics. Currentactivities embrace observational and theoretical research, telescope operationand instrument development.

Under the aegis of theBuilt Environment and Sustainable Technologies(BEST) Research Institute, LJMU has established a growing internationalreputation for industry-relevant research and knowledge transfer.

The Centre for the Study of Crime, Criminalisation and SocialExclusion supports policymakers, practitioners, user communities andother ‘stakeholders’ at local, regional, national and international levels.

The PROTECT Centre is developing innovative and effectiveapproaches to cyber security, and 50% of its research rated as world-leading or internationally excellent.

The European Institute for Urban Affairs is a leading urban policyresearch group influencing policy development around the globe.

The Primate Behaviour Research Group is part of LJMU’s ResearchCentre for Evolutionary Anthropology and Paleoecology andmany of its projects focus on the regulation of primates socialrelationships and social systems.

Research within our internationally-acclaimed General EngineeringResearch Institute includes optical metrology, advanced manufacturingtechnology, radio-frequency and microwave research as well aselectronics, image processing and mechanical engineering.

The Research Centre for Literature and Cultural History focuses onacademic research in English, providing a scholarly community, hostingregular seminars and lectures and offering a platform for dissemination ofresearch in two main areas: the role of writing in contesting socialformations; and foundations of the contemporary moment.

The Centre for Public Health is a designated World HealthOrganisation Collaborating Centre for Violence Prevention. The Centreworks with a wide range of international organisations, including theUnited Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the Council of Europe andthe United Nations Development Programme.

LJMU’s School of Sport and Exercise Sciences is rated as ‘amongst thevery best departments in the world’ and itsResearch Institute for Sportand Exercise Sciences (RISES) conducts research from a cellular levelto whole-body responses to exercise from elite athletes to the elderly.

Research in the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciencesincludes pharmacy practice, prescribing, medicines for children and theelderly, adverse drug reactions and much more.

Entry requirementsApplicants for MPhil or MPhil/PhDshould normally hold, or be expectingto obtain, a first or upper second-class Bachelor’s honours degree in arelevant subject. Opportunities existfor applicants with existing Masterslevel qualifications to apply for a PhDat LJMU, which can be undertaken in3 rather than 4 years full-time. If youare interested, please contact theUniversity’s Graduate School directwith an outline of your researchinterests and if appropriate, you willthen be put in touch with a relevantmember of academic staff to discussyour options further.

Applicants holding qualifications otherthan those above will be consideredon their merits. Appropriate researchand previous experience will be takeninto account.

All research degree registrations aresubject to approval by the Faculty andthe University’s Research DegreesCommittee.

International students:You must alsohold an IELTS qualification of at least6.5 or equivalent. Please note: Facultiesmay require higher scores in individualparts of the test. Please check with therelevant Faculty before applying.

Supervision arrangements and progression monitoringAll registered research students are allocated an experiencedsupervision team of two or three supervisors. One of thesesupervisors will be appointed your Director of Studies. Progressionmonitoring is undertaken both formally and informally by thesupervision team and the Faculty.

Training opportunitiesLJMU offers a comprehensive research student induction programme,together with a varied programme of generic skills training opportunities.Attendance at the research student induction is a compulsory conditionof your research degree registration. In addition, Faculties offer subject-specific research training based on individual student needs.

Registration periodsFull-time students registering for PhD are normally expected to completetheir award within 4 years; those registering for MPhil are expected tocomplete within 2 years. Part-time students registering for PhD arenormally expected to complete their award within 7 years; thoseregistering for MPhil are expected to complete within 4 years.

AssessmentFinal examination for the awards of MPhil and PhD is by thesis and oralexamination following completion of a research programme on anapproved topic.

LibrariesOur Libraries provide access to allthe resources and student supportservices you’ll need to succeed inyour postgraduate studies.

With 24/7 opening hours during semesters anddesignated postgraduate study areas, featuringlarger desks, networked PCs, bookable meetingrooms and rooms to view DVDs, you can planyour study time to fit in around your othercommitments.

LJMU’s libraries have been carefully designed tomake them as welcoming and attractive aspossible. They are zoned to give you differentspaces and facilities to work in groups, studyquietly or meet fellow postgraduate studentsfor a coffee.

The Libraries are a ‘one-stop shop’ for students; you can get advice on everything from studyskills to exam timetables and student funding,submit assignments, pay your fees as well ashaving access to all the resources you need foryour research and coursework.

According to the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA),almost half of all postgraduate students study part time.Working while you study means you may be able to pay foryour course without taking out any further loans or at leastreducing the amount you need to borrow. Working while youstudy also gives you the skills valued by employers, such asmanaging your workload and prioritising your time.

LJMU is keen to support students progressing from one ofour undergraduate programmes onto postgraduate studyat the University. We will award eligible students a one-off£500 Postgraduate Award to help with their living andcourse-related costs.

PROFESSIONAL AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT LOANS

Many students fund their postgraduate studies viaProfessional and Career Development Loans (PCDL). Theseloans are used by students to enhance their job skills orcareer prospects. This is a bank loan which you will have topay back once you’ve completed the course. However, whileyou are studying any interest on the loan will be paid for youby the Skills Funding Agency.
