Maribyrnong council has rejected claims its decision to y the yellow Co Vang ag of the former South Vietnam risks starting a second Vietnam War in Maribyrnong.

e unanimous decision made at last weeks council meeting was met with enthusiasm by a packed public gallery, although one opponent has since warned the move is divisive.

e yellow ag with three red stripes is seen to represent the Vietnamese diaspora, triggered by the fall of Saigon, now called Ho Chi Minh City, in 1975.

Maribyrnong mayor Nam Quach said the move to y the ag on special occasions at sites such as the Town Hall and Monument of Gratitude at Jensen Reserve came at the request of the Vietnamese-Australian community.

It marks the 40-year commemoration of Vietnamese settlement and the boat arrivals in Australia. We had people in the chamber crying tears of joy, he said.

Cr Quach, whose parents ed Saigon and settled in Australia as refugees, said multiculturalism required embracing dierence and celebrating proud heritages.

Its important to recognise not only that heritage but also the future, he said.

But Maidstone resident Anh Vo said the decision was an insult to the red ag community aligned with Vietnams communist regime.

e army veteran, who arrived in Australia in 1984, told Star Weekly a large number Star Weekly a large number Star Weeklyof Vietnamese traders and residents in Maribyrnong were red ag supporters.

Maribyrnong will open a second Vietnam war in Melbourne, he said. When you come here to Australia you should leave your troubles behind. When you become an Australian citizen you need to y only the Australian ag.

Flying the Co Vang ag has sparked division in the Sydney council of Faireld, but it occurred without incident in a number of other locations in Australia and across the US.

Footscray RSL president Long Viet Nguyen said it was an appropriate recognition of the journey of thousands of Vietnamese people in Australia.

Australia is a free, democratic country and thats why we live here, he said. At the

Tony Gerace, sales director of Burnham Real Estate, said he believed Altona North was taking o because investors and developers were concentrating on the suburb.

eres newer, bigger properties, townhouses, that are being oered which are probably $50 or $100 a week more expensive than your older established homes that were sitting there. Because the real estate markets been so healthy and strong lately, everyones been doing developments.

    REIV chief executive Enzo Raimondo

    By Goya Dmytryshchak

Altona North has recorded the fastest rising rents for units in Melbourne.

Domain Group senior economist Andrew Wilson said the median rent in Altona North had risen 28.1 per cent to $365 a week in the six months to September.

eres a perception, perhaps, that its gone under the radar a little bit, Mr Wilson said. eres good, solid local amenities, still pretty close to the city and, you know, Altona

does have a beach. I think Altona, Newport, these areas, have just been to one side and I think theres a discovering of these areas as being aordable.

I used to go down to Altona and Newport when I was young and I had friends who lived there, and it was always a bit of a working class, edgy sort of place. But I think its shaken that o quite considerably and now its all part of that growing desire to be closer to the city and have an established neighbourhood environment, Mr Wilson said.

said the increases in rental income in Altona North reected a signicant interest in the inner west.

Altona North has seen a house price increase of almost 15 per cent in the past 12 months, to a median price of $660,000, he said. Clearly theres strong buyer interest, and the higher rental income in Altona North reects a similarly strong interest from tenants in this area. Altona has also seen strong growth, with the median price of units and apartments now $535,000.

House prices, rents on the rise

A West Footscray lmmaker has created history with the rst-ever feature lm made in Vanuata.

Bentley Deans Tanna was lmed entirely on location on the Pacic island of Tanna and acted by the people of the Yakel tribe.

e stars of the award-winning lm were in Yarraville last Friday night to perform a traditional dance ahead of the lms sold-out premiere screening at the Sun eatre.

Co-director Dean said the process began about a decade ago while he was in Tanna on assignment for Dateline.

I found myself on top of a very, very active volcano, marvelling at what a beautiful place

Movie novices take starring rolesStars of the lm Tanna join West Footscray lmmaker Bentley Dean at Yarravilles Sun Theatre to launch the lm. Tanna join West Footscray lmmaker Bentley Dean at Yarravilles Sun Theatre to launch the lm. Tanna (Benjamin Millar)

this was and thinking even back then that it would be a remarkable place to come back to, to learn more about, he said.

Its been an extraordinary experience, coming from the beginnings of this project.

Tanna was a hit at the prestigious Venice Film Festival last month, winning the International Critics Week audience award for best lm and the critics prize for cinematography.

Dean said the honours were a testament to the dedication of the lms stars.

Its in the language of the people there, acted by them, and its an extraordinary achievement. When we rst arrived in the village of Yakel, they actually hadnt seen a feature lm. Now

theyre starring in one, Dean said, adding that the tale of forbidden love was developed during the rst two months he spent living in the village with his wife and two children.

I was told about a very controversial relationship two lovers had led in the 1980s that led to a profound change in their culture, Dean said. So its based on a true story we screened it to them and it was an extraordinary experience. ey hadnt seen a cinema before and here they were watching themselves on two queen-sized sheets tied together in a tree.

Tanna screens nationally from November 5.

Police are hunting for a man who tried to abduct a 12-year-old girl aer she stepped o a tram in Maribyrnong.

e girl was riding the No.82 tram home from school last Wednesday when she noticed a man staring at her.

She told police that when she got o the tram at the intersection of Edgewater Boulevard and Gordon Street about 4.30pm the man followed her.

Aer almost 600 metres he grabbed her arm and said, Lets go. e girl broke free of the mans grip and ran home with the man giving chase. e girl said she locked the front door and hid inside the home as the man bashed on the door several times before leaving.

Senior Constable Fahd Ahmed praised the girls actions but warned the situation could have been much worse.

We are treating it seriously as an attempted abduction, he said. It was extremely brazen and despicable. Its a very persistent sort of oender.

Senior Constable Ahmed said the girl was very courageous but was terried by the ordeal.

e man, depicted above in a computer-generated image, is described as aged 36 to 42 and about 182 centimetres tall, with short spiked black hair in a Mohawk style and a large hooked nose. He was wearing a long-sleeved orange high-visibility shirt and dark-coloured work pants. Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000

Highpoint shopping centre is inviting people to create their own jewellery as part of the glittering new 3D Jewellery Box.

Created in collaboration with Melbourne design studio e Cutaway, the 3D installation has been inspired by iconic jewellery boxes of the past.

e centrepiece of the space is a 1.5-metre-high, 2.4-metre-long sculpture of a brilliant cut diamond built from powder-coated steel and multi-coloured perspex.

e 3D Jewellery Box was unveiled last week at an event hosted by actor Melanie Vallejo and Highpoint style ambassador Nadia Bartel.

e Melbourne Ballet Company performed a dance choreographed specically for the night by the companys principal dancer

Sharon Fernandez. e dance opened with the nostalgic sounds of a wind-up jewellery box as the ballerinas circled the sculpture.

Using a 3D printing pen, acclaimed Melbourne artist Kate Rohde produced an exclusive collection of jewellery pieces for the event.

e 3D Jewellery Box will be at Highpoint shopping centre at Maribyrnong until Sunday.

Victoria University has defended senior management racking up tens of thousands of dollars in travel expenses while at the same time cutting jobs and courses.

Sta raised the alarm over exorbitant travel and accommodation expenses for interstate and overseas trips since the start of 2014, which coincided with the slashing of about 300 jobs.

A bulletin by the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) detailed examples of spending, such as $400 on chaueur-driven limousines and $14,000 on accommodation and

cutting about 300 jobs in a bid to save up to $50 million by 2016.

Mr Adams said there may be legitimate reasons for travel, but spending on luxury accommodation and business-class airfares while cutting jobs, services and classes could not be justied.

A VU spokeswoman said an internal travel policy provided strict guidelines for

travel on a three-week trip to the United States.NTEU VU branch president Paul Adams

said the blatant hypocrisy of the spending between January 2014 and August 2015 unearthed via a freedom of information request had raised eyebrows across the campus.

We have been told the university is in a dire nancial situation and all these cuts are needed, so to have senior management spending up big on hotels, travel and chaueur-driven cars is extraordinary, Mr Adams said.

I have received a number of emails from sta, who are angry and upset about it.

VU announced in April 2014 that it was

university sta to rationalise their need to travel and explain its adding of value to the university.

All bookings are made at the best possible price point through a central processing unit, to suit the needs of every individual travel request, she said.

e spokeswoman said that as the university was a national and international business with more than $400 million in revenue, travel was necessary for networking, education, and sectoral participation.

e costs which come with such travel are the costs of successfully doing business in our industry.

Pet owners are being warned to be vigilant aer a number of snake bite cases and numerous sightings around Hobsons Bay this month.

On Monday, a snake was spotted near Altona dog beach by Kristen Hurley, while she was walking her dogs.

A tiger snake crossed the path no more than two or three meters in front of us, she said. It was headed for the beach.

A week earlier, another visitor to Altona dog beach posted a photo on Facebook of a tiger snake in the seaweed.

Altona Vet Clinic recently treated one dog for a snake bite and referred two other pets for emergency treatment.

Lort Smith Animal Hospital has seen a record number of snake bite cases this October, with more than 20 cat and dog patients so far.

Hobsons Bay chief executive Chris Eddy said the council used a licensed snake catcher to safely remove the snake and release it into a conservation reserve.

ere are no formal guidelines as to where snakes may be relocated but, as snakes are territorial, the licensed snake catcher relocates them to a considerable distance from where they were caught.

ere have been sightings at all of our coastal reserves from Cyril Curtin Reserve in Williamstown through to Truganina Park and Skeleton Creek.

To contact the councils snake catcher, call 99321000.

A campaign has begun to get a rare slice of open space in Footscray handed over to the community.

Buckley Street resident Daniel Flood is ghting for the land at 96-100 Buckley Street, compulsorily acquired in 2011 for the $3.65 billion Regional Rail Link, to be turned into community open space.

About 80 homes and businesses along and near Buckley Street, including the Footscray Senior Citizens Centre, were bulldozed to make way for the project.

Surplus land not used when the rail link was completed will be sold to developers unless bought by a state government agency or Maribyrnong council.

ere is no open space in the area yet there are going to be around 800 new apartments built around the site, Mr Flood said.

Its probably the last piece of government- owned land around here.

e Regional Rail Link Authority has deemed 96-100 Buckley Street to be surplus, along with a 200-metre long strip stretching west from Middle Footscray station at 130-176 Buckley Street.

RRLA spokesman Paul Frawley said the land had been oered for sale to other government agencies and Maribyrnong council as per state government guidelines.

Any land not purchased by another government body will be listed for public sale in the new year, he said.

Star Weekly reported in March that residents Star Weekly reported in March that residents Star Weeklywant 130-176 Buckley Street to be gied to the community as a park.

Footscray MP Marsha omson said she was willing to discuss the future of the sites with Maribyrnong council. If council is interested

    Resident ghts for park

Daniel Flood and muppet Kelly at the vacant land in Buckley Street. (Damjan Janevski)

in the land then Im interested in working with them to get the property, she said.

e thing that is of interest to all of us is the amount of green space available in Footscray, particularly in regards to some of the apartments approved under [former state planning minister] Matthew Guy.

Maribyrnong mayor Nam Quach said the

council would be interested in discussing the future of the land parcels. [But] its important people realise council doesnt own the land and there are many aspects to look at, such as safety and location, he said.

Mr Flood has started a Facebook page in support of his campaign at www.facebook.com/buckleystpark.

Explore the secret charms, historic stories and possibilities in store for the Maribyrnong as part of the citys River of Lives project.

Free, site-specic performances and events on Saturday, November 7, will celebrate the connections many community members share with the iconic river.

As part of a combined arts-research project, a circus workshop for all the family will be held on the riverbanks at Footscray Community Arts Centre amphitheatre from 4.30pm.

Try your hand at juggling, acrobatics, hula- hooping, take a peek through view-nders created by BiGSh and discover new ways of looking at the Maribyrnong River.

Performed on the river itself, Born in a Taxis is is how I see it will immerse audiences travelling by boat in a soundscape thats both natural and manufactured.

e meditation on the Maribyrnong weaves personal accounts and historical facts, giving glimpses of the ordinary and extraordinary people who live along the waterway.

e public will be invited to take a guided walking tour from 7.30pm. ey will meet artists Riza Manalo, Steven Rhall and Jessica Dubblu, who will respond to three sites along the river using video, installation, photography and sound, incorporating migration, indigenous and colonial histories.

Members of the Womens Circus will stage an aerial performance, dubbed Water is Taught by irst, inspired by Emily Dickinsons poem of the same name.

Maribyrnong mayor Nam Quach said the Maribyrnong held a special place in the hearts of all who live and spend time in the city.

Children will be at risk if removing a level crossing at Williamstown North train station and building a yover causes more motorists to use Williamstown as a route to Point Cook, according to a resident.

Jason Bryce is calling on the state government to reconsider plans to remove the crossing.

Instead, he wants the pedestrian underpass, which was removed by VicTrack last year, to be reinstated.

Labor made a pre-election promise to remove the crossing in Ferguson Street, Williamstown, where two children died more than 20 years ago and a man suered brain damage aer being dragged by a train in 2011.

Mr Bryce said he was concerned a yover would attract more cars to the intersection, which is near three schools.

Yes, Im concerned about the heritage and the village nature of Williamstown and I dont want to see a motorway going through Ferguson Street or a big yover going past our heritage homes and the Bristol Hotel, he said.

But the safety of the kids is going to be put at risk if more cars are going to be coming through that intersection.

Williamstown MP Wade Noonan said the community overwhelmingly supported removing the level crossing.

I have every condence that xing these crossings is the right approach, he said.

    Call to keep level crossing

Boyhood dreams of ying across the world have become a reality for a former Westbourne Grammar student from Altona.

Years of study and dedication have led Royal Australian Air Force pilot William Harwood to his current assignment, ying missions for the Australian Defence Force across the Middle East.

Normally based at RAAF Base Richmond in New South Wales, Squadron Leader Harwood is a C-130J Hercules transport aircra pilot with No. 37 Squadron.

Hes presently commander of the C-130J Detachment with the Air Mobility Task Group based at Australias main support base.

Squadron Leader Harwood is on his sixth operational deployment and is responsible for supervising close to 40 air force personnel, including aircrew and maintenance sta who keep the aircra ying into Iraq and Afghanistan. I regularly y missions to keep my skills sharp and maintain awareness of the situation in-theatre, he said. Crew days can be long, lasting up to 14 hours, and we have worked up to 18 hours a day on some missions. Its a demanding job.

Squadron Leader Harwood joined the Air Force in 2004, straight out of Westbourne Grammar as a direct-entry ocer. When he completed his training in 2006, he landed in the job of his dreams ying the Hercules.

I have always found ying the C-130J to be a particularly rewarding job; we are able to genuinely help people, he said. I am proud of our humanitarian assistance missions, such as the air drops weve been doing at Mount Sinjar in north-western Iraq or the work we did earlier this year in Vanuatu for Operation Pacic Assist aer tropical cyclone Pam.

In October, 2011, Squadron Leader Harwood

    Heights of ambition

was posted on exchange to the UK, based at RAF Brize Norton where he spent just over three years ying the British C-130J.

His ance, Flight Lieutenant Courtney Kennedy, of No.3 Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron, joined him on the trip and their son, Peter, was born in Oxford.

In early 2013, Squadron Leader Harwood deployed with the British to Afghanistan and later that year deployed to the Falkland Islands

for six weeks. My return to No.37 Squadron gives me the opportunity to give back and share what I learned from the RAF Hercules eet to help adapt and improve the RAAF C-130J procedures, he said.

It can be hard to spend so much time away from home, especially with a young family, but Im lucky to have a ance who understands the air force and my unpredictable occupation.

    By Goya Dmytryshchak

All that remains of the former Williamstown racecourse is a concrete stairway that leads nowhere and foundations buried in undergrowth.

Williamstown historian Tom Ferris has spent years painstakingly unearthing the history of the track which is actually in Altona for his new book, Williamstown: A Great Metropolitan Racing Club.

Mr Ferriss great grandfather, Henry Hick, was one of the racecourse trustees and a Williamstown councillor for 26 years, twice mayor, who built many notable local landmarks.

Mr Ferris said that, in 1857, ratepayers of the then-borough of Williamstown petitioned their council for a racecourse.

eir initial request was for an area of land just beyond Williamstowns municipal boundary in the shire of Wyndham and north of Kororoit Creek, he said.

When this request was refused, permission was given for an area of land south of Kororoit Creek where the rst public races were conducted on Boxing Day, 1859, until 1864 when the land was acquired.

ereaer, the initial request was granted and races were held from 1865 until 1940.

Phar Lap won the Underwood Stakes there in 1931. Floods in 1902 and 1918 caused meetings to be moved to Moonee Valley and Cauleld.

One of the more bizarre stories associated with the course was the discovery of a childs mummied body beneath the Governors enclosure.

e last races at Williamstown took place in February, 1940, Mr Ferris said.

    e Commonwealth government took

    Ghostly hoofbeats amid the ruins

over the racecourse shortly aer for defence purposes, from 1940 until 1946.

e course was used for basic army training during the war and the rst migrants arrived in 1949, being housed originally at the racecourse, including in Nissen huts.

e whole area was snake infested. Its well documented that John Wren was

pulling strings behind the scenes with the state

government and they did reduce race meetings during the war years, Mr Ferris said.

Williamstown Racing Club had planned to resume racing at the course in 1948, but in 1947 a suspicious re destroyed much of the public and members stands, and racing was never held there again.

It is worth a visit today just to stand and listen, Mr Ferris said.

You may hear the thunder of hooves of famous racehorses of the Australian turf, hear jockeys voices as they urge their mounts to the winning post, cries of bookies calling the odds and the roar of excited spectators.

Mr Ferriss book is available from the Williamstown Historical Museum, 5 Electra Street, open from 2-5pm on the rst and third Sundays of the month.

    10 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 28, 2015

    Whats your connection with Maribyrnong?

I do volunteer work for cohealth and a lot of other things. Ive been doing it for 16 years now, providing food for Aboriginal elders, helping out RecLink football, all dierent programs.

When I retired from work and they were shutting down a lot of the factories, I wondered what I was going to do with my time. But I saw the Reclink boys playing footy and it just grew from there.

Whats the best thing about volunteering?

I just love what I do. I remember my daughter asking me one day why do you do all this volunteer work for nothing? I told her Ive got all the boys down there Im working with who have all sorts of problems.

One came up to me one day and said I dont have to drink any more because I want to play footy with you. ats worth a million dollars to me.

How did it feel to be named Maribyrnongs Citizen of the Year this year?

When I won Maribyrnongs Citizen of the Year it was a big surprise. I said I do what I do because I love what I do, I dont do it for recognition. ey put me up for an award

MY PLACEUncle Roy Alexander, a member of the stolen generation, never knew his family. Yet Maribyrnongs Citizen of the Year tells Benjamin Millar a quiet space on a bend of the Maribyrnong River shows the importance of belonging.

with the Council on the Ageing and I got the Seniors Achiever Award. I like to go about what I do, just getting what I do done. Just being there for people is what its all about. I want to be there for people.

Wheres your favourite local place and why?

Pipemakers Park. I call the gumtrees there my family. ats where I go and sit and chill out and think. I came across it one day and I just felt at ease. I come from the Mooroopna area so it must have something to do with the river and the trees.

What do you like best about the area?

Its a very friendly place. I can go into Footscray and there will always be someone I can have lunch with.

Who has inspired you in your life?

Aunty Francine Riches and Pastor Tony Riches. ey are Aboriginal leaders and have been very good in helping me over the years. Ive not had family all my life. We have an Aboriginal church on Gordon Street and I have a connection there. People ask me what are Aboriginal people like, I say come to the church and meet us. I invite everybody to come down. (Su

People are being urged to overcome their distaste for bowel cancer screening as gures show that two of every three people in Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong threw away free testing kits mailed to them in 2013 and 2014.

Cancer Council Victoria representatives, Health Minister Jill Hennessy and Altona North GP Mukesh Haikerwal released gures last week for the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program for people from 50-65 who completed and returned the free kits.

e Cancer Councils Kate Broun said the faecal occult blood test, which detects microscopic amounts of blood in faeces, picked up 83 per cent of bowel cancer cases.

Dr Haikerwal said the biggest obstacle to people completing the testing kits was that people didnt like taking their samples.

Its not that hard and maybe we should just get our shit together, he said. In [Melbournes west] we do have a lower uptake.

Nine in 10 bowel cancers can be treated with early detection.

Devika Jayawardene, who completed the test three years ago at age 50, said she only did the test in a bid to encourage her husband to do it.

Hers came back positive and further tests conrmed she had bowel cancer.

Even though its messy its pretty important, Ms Jayawardene said. I want to get the word out bowel cancer can be treatable.

Ms Jayawardene urged people not to throw away their free kits. If you can nd it before cancer grows, there is treatment, she said.

A Footscray opera singer could be jetting to New York aer reaching the nal of a prestigious scholarship competition.

Elizabeth Lewis is one of six nalists in a concert this Sunday for e Opera Foundation for young Australians 2015 Lady Fairfax New York Scholarship.

e winner will receive $43,000 and the chance to study in New York with internationally acclaimed vocal, language and movement coaches.

Ms Lewis said singing had been a part of her life for as long as she could remember.

I always sang as a child, she said. When I was 12 I asked my mum if I could take lessons and when I was 15 I went to see an opera and thought this is for me, she said.

Tosca was the rst opera I saw and I thought I could do that, lets do it. I decided on the spot.

e sopranos big break came in 2009, when she was selected at the age of 21 to perform in the chorus in Verdis La Traviata for Opera Queensland.

A few singers with more experience really protected me; they taught me a lot about stage cra, she said.

It was really exciting, I had a dresser, they put a wig on me all these things I had never had.

Ms Lewis became a member of the Opera Q Studio in 2013 and joined Victorian Opera last year as one of their developing artists.

is year she has already won the Sydney Opera House Opera Award and the More an Opera development prize.

But the chance to travel to New York is icing on the cake and could provide an enormous boost to her career.

ere isnt enough work for everyone here in Australia, so you have to go overseas, she said.

I have a particular kind of soprano so I have

to go overseas to polish it o, because of the repertoire. When things are so far away for us, cost is very much a sticking point.

Ms Lewis has selected the song Divinits du Styx from Christoph Glucks opera du Styx from Christoph Glucks opera du Styx Alceste for her performance before the judges at the Verbrugghen Hall of Sydney Conservatorium of Music on Sunday.

Whatever the outcome, Ms Lewis is delighted her talents have been recognised.

I wont have time to be nervous, she said. You run on adrenaline; it all becomes a blur.

Cafe by day, burger bar By night thats Mr Ed in Kensington.

Aer checking it out in the former regard, its become a sometime coee spot for me and perhaps Ill grab one of their terric pies or sweeties.

Tonight were in the house to check out the burgers.

Having looked at the varied ingredients and the prices, Bennie wondered aloud if the Mr Ed burgers would oer sucient eating.

And well he might the prices range from $14.50 to $17.50.

Among the ingredients listed for the nine burgers are pickled zucchini, Hereford beef, bourbon bacon jam, cont baby tomatoes, tomatillo salsa and shredded kale.

Ooohhh, sounds fancy! But will we get a good feed or dainty,

boutique burgers gone in a mouthful?Actually, at another time and on another

visit I might choose to compile a meal just from the very alluring list of sides.

How about rainbow slaw, purple congo/kiper/bullhorn pepper fry-up, or merlot- pickled onion rings?

Ahh, but not tonight on with the burgers!Bennie goes the Buddha burger of minute

He loves it a lot. He loves the way all the

is burger maven rates it a very solid 8.5 or even 9. Yes, that good.

Only glitch, and its minor, is that hes unused to real, actual meat in such a meal.

Hes (very) used to hamburger patties, whereas this is, in eect, a steak sanger and he grapples, momentarily, with the eating skills required.

I go the Wagyu beef burger with pickled zucchini, raclette, baby leaves, house relish and mustard mayonnaise and it, too, is a doozy.

e beef patty is about an inch thick, well seasoned and delicious, and the dressings and zucchini noodles are wonderful.

For sides, we get a small serve of the home-made fat chips ($4) and theyre fabulous, too. Once-boiled and once-fried, they have tender, hot innards that scream: potato!

We complete our meal with a mixed pickle plate of jalapenos, carrot, cucumber and cornichons ($5.50). e jalapenos are somewhat out of place, but the cornichons hit the spot and the carrot and cucumber are delights that are pickled somewhat in the sweet, delicate Japanese style.

Weve enjoyed and admired the Mr Ed take on burgers. Weve received burgers that dont have us waddling out of the place having completely stued ourselves.

But we consider the quality of the ingredients and cooking and the resultant avours well worth the money weve paid.

We recommend the Mr Ed burgers to anyone who has become a bit jaded with Footscray burger bar 8bit and the like.

Mr Ed is a ne place to spend an hour or so and we reckon their burger endeavours deserve greater patronage than the handful of occupied tables weve observed this Friday night.

After 88 years of commitment to the community, including working closely with a range of ex-service people, current serving personnel, schools, sport and charity organisations, Altona RSL is looking to the future and continuing to support those in need, general manager David Hanson says.

Welfare is our main focus, David says. Weve contributed $1,192,555 towards the local community during the past six years alone.

The clubs small team of locals, willing to assist visitors and provide great service, are volunteers who help look after the community.

The RSL has donated to many local schools, six sports clubs, veterans associations and hospitals, while David is directly involved in this community aid.

We run a welfare bus that takes club members to doctors appointments, he says. We also take elderly people from their nursing homes on day tours and assist with sporting events at Altona P-9 College.

With Christmas not far away, Altona RSLs involvement donating Christmas presents to charities for children is very important.

Many more services deserve a mention. We provide free haircuts to current

and ex-defence force personnel and their widows once a month, David says.

We have a full-time volunteer welfare ofcer available who helps our members and the local community (including buying mobility aids for the elderly to lease for free to their members), and more recently have even hosted welfare ofcer training courses. The clubs scholarship program, now in its second year, helps underprivileged children.

Altona RSL is home to the Bay West Veterans Centre (open 9am-1pm Monday-Wednesday), which provides support for ex-service personnel.

Pension ofcers are on site every Monday to Wednesday between 9am and 1pm, helping members with their pensions. There is also a justice of the peace, with a kit for powers of attorney, all at no cost.

For a person with a hearing problem, having to say the words, Can you please repeat that?, over and over again, can be quite depressing.

In fact, says Cris Ivanidis, owner of Active Audiology, it can cause people to withdraw, which impacts negatively on their wellbeing.

Many of our clients come to us feeling insecure and down, because theyve withdrawn from social situations where they cant hear or contribute to conversation, Cris says. But when weve tted them with the right device for their needs and they come back for a review, we see a positive change in condence and mood.

This is actually one of the best parts of my job, seeing how lives can be changed.

Its an incredible feeling to know youve helped someone, who had given up on enjoying life, to realise they can get back to their lawn bowls and social occasions, simply because they can hear properly again.

Active Audiology is an independent hearing service provider. Why is this important?

Unlike four in ve hearing clinics owned by hearing aid manufacturers, we provide unbiased clinical advice on hearing health issues. It also means our clients have genuine price/brand choice, because were not pushing a particular brand of hearing device.

Cris understands how variable the service quality can be from some of the larger hearing companies. By setting up a smaller business, he knew he could offer a more personalised service.

This can be especially important with more mature-aged clients as they feel most

comfortable being seen by a small team they get to know.

We take great care in trying to meet the needs of our clients. Recently, one of our receptionists got a call from one of our clients, who was feeling unwell and had run out of hearing aid batteries.

Routinely we post them out or clients come into the clinic to collect them.

On this particular day, our receptionist decided to drive past the clients house and drop them into her letterbox just so she would have the batteries in time to watch her favourite afternoon TV show. This is what weve built our business on client-staff relationships and exceptional service.

The government-accredited clinic, with university-trained and qualied audiologists, provides free hearing services and aids to pensioners and DVA Goldcard holders, along with a range of service and hearing technologies to self-funded retirees. Sleep and musician plugs, tinnitus testing and diagnosis are also provided.

After helping thousands of Melburnians get back their enjoyment in life, Cris understands that its not just a hearing aid theyre after. They want to feel condent again, reconnect with others, be able to hear their grandchildren. We listen carefully before giving recommendations about which hearing solution best matches their lifestyle.

Active Audiology, Shop 10 Harrington Square, Altona. Opens 9am-5pm Monday-Friday. Inquiries: 9398 3331 or [email protected] Audiologist Cris Ivanidis loves the positive impact hearing properly again has on lives. (Joe Mastroianni)

Jim Cameron loves everything about Amarco Apartments at Kingsville. From the many social activities hes involved in, to his wonderful neighbours, and the easy access to specialised aged care services, Jim says the four years hes lived at Amarco have been wonderful.

I think the best thing I did was moving here Ive never regretted it, he said. I suppose there are pros and cons of living anywhere I cant think of a con about Amarco.

Uniting AgeWells Amarco Apartments have been designed so residents can enjoy their retirement free from the burdens and high ongoing costs that come with managing and maintaining a house.

Jim said moving to a low-maintenance property with ready access to key services was a driving factor when he and his wife, Joan, who has since passed away, decided to move in.

We lived in North Altona in a house that was 52 years old and needed some work done on it, and I really wasnt able to do it, he said.

Aside from enjoying the secure, private apartment, concierge service, 24/7 emergency support, in-house caf and reduced utility bills, Jim loves the vibrant Amarco community.

As the social clubs activities co-ordinator, he organises regular outings, including dinners and boat rides, and in-house activities, such as Bingo, movie nights and barbecue lunches.

Amarco also organises special events for residents. Last month, Ian Cover and Greg Champion of the famed Coodabeen Champions radio show regaled guests with their tales of sporting life.

There have been talks by the local historical society and an expert on ageing, as well as gift stands and craft days.

Residents can also take advantage of the in-house wellness centre, the library, business centre, lounge facilities and caf.

While maintaining independence is the key for Amarco residents, they also have peace of mind knowing Uniting

FIT24X7 gym owner and long-time Footscray local George Vitsas describes himself as a roll model of the barbecue pork variety no chilli.

As a trainer, youre meant to be a role model, he says with a laugh. But living in Footscray means Im surrounded by wonderful food from many cultures and, as a good citizen supporting local businesses, Ive certainly sampled all of them.

Jokes aside, George has battled weight and health issues, which gives him an insight into how his clients may feel.

I found gyms quite daunting and intimidating so its my goal to run an inviting, friendly place with a happy culture, he says. I think anyone coming to FIT24X7 nds that comes across from our members and staff.

George addresses other potential barriers to joining a gym.

For many people, the biggest barrier to achieving tness goals may be cost, he says. We really hope to be a tness centre that removes that barrier to access.

Most other gyms charge between $10 to $20 a week, which equates to between $500 to $1000 a year. With our current offer, you can get unlimited weekly memberships for less than $1 a day. Our $199 yearly membership represents even better value, but its for a limited time so get in quick!

For others who have joined, the issue is keeping at it.

Whenever I joined somewhere in the past and didnt stick with it, it was typically due to boredom, George says. This is something that weve aimed to address, to ensure members are more engaged.

There are pieces of equipment that people may never have seen before. Members have access to personal trainers and new types of group and functional training classes. Its all part of having members truly enjoy whats on offer rather than perceiving workouts as a chore.

Taming boredom could be as simple as saving their favourite show on a USB stick and watching it on their personal TV screen

Victoria Police will be out in force over the Melbourne Cup weekend, with Operation Furlong running from Friday, October 30, until Tuesday, November 3.

Road policing advisor Senior Sergeant Ross Burbidge said Operation Furlong will be conducted throughout Victoria by all operational police in all police areas over the ve days, using all available personnel from local highway patrol units, general duties police and other units.

The major focus for the operation will be speed, fatigue, impaired driving (drug and alcohol), mobile phone offences and seatbelt compliance.

Motorists will be aware of police units in marked and unmarked vehicles targeting major arterial roads over this holiday weekend. Trafc camera vehicles will also be rostered on roads known for high collision rates.

The aim, in addition to detecting offences, is to provide a highly visible and mobile police presence to reinforce positive driving behaviours and reduce the incidence of road trauma.

It has been demonstrated time after time, Senior Sergeant Burbidge explains, that speed is a contributing factor in most road crashes. Therefore, stay within the speed limit and drive to suit the conditions.

Speeding affects both the risk of a crash and the severity of injuries sustained when a crash does happen.

RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council chairman Jim Giddings says road trauma isnt just about the people who die. Its about the enormous impact on the community, from the family members and emergency services workers, who have

to deal with these tragedies on a daily basis, to the police who have to deliver the devastating news to loved ones, Mr Giddings says.

Drivers are urged to plan their trips, be patient and ensure they have frequent breaks when driving long distances.

Mr Giddings said holiday driving has its special challenges, and motorists should

If you plan to have a drink, then plan not to drive. Taking a big risk like drinking and

And before embarking on any driving trips, drivers should check their tyres, windscreen washers, brakes and lights.
